Master Reindeer Trainer, Santas Workshop, North Pole

Dan Steinbeck of the Press-News Journal spoke with one of Santa’s elves about his career working with Santa during this time of year.

EDUCATION:Ph.D. in Reindeer Assess-ment and Training, and a B.S. in Snowology.

HOBBIES:Cookie tasting, ice skating, Volunteer Elf Rescue Team (V.E.R.T), and visiting old friends on the Isle of Misfit Toys.

FAVORITE FOOD:Reindeer drops. No, it’s not what you think... they are drops of chocolate glis-tened with sugar. These are a staple in every E.L.F. diet.

FAVORITE DRINK:Hot chocolate, of course!

FAVORITE TOY:Tool kit. I carry it with me everywhere I go, so that if a child has a toy emergency, I am able to help.

FAVORITE CHRISTMAS STORY:Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Rudolph was so flattered that his life story has been made in to a blockbuster movie. He’s really a very humble guy.

PNJ: What’s like being an elf?ELF: It’s great! Everyone knows the importance the elves play in helping St. Nick get his sleigh ready and get the goods delivered all across the globe.

PNJ: How many elves are there that prepare for the holiday season?ELF: That’s really a matter of propri-etary concerns, and we really can’t give specifics. Rest assured there are plenty of us to get the job done.

PNJ: How long do you prepare for Christmas Eve?ELF: There are some things that are go-ing on all year long. Of course, the big push is the last six weeks before the big night. In those last six weeks, it is almost non-stop in the workshops and wish list compilation areas.

PNJ: Do all elves work at the North Pole?ELF: Of course not. Perhaps you are fa-miliar with the more famous of our kin that work in a tree and make cookies. Many other of our kind are located at se-cret locations in the world, which again we can’t fully disclose, for proprietary reasons.

PNJ: Do any of the elves get to fly with Santa Claus?ELF: Generally not. Even with the magic of Christ-mas, there is little room in the sleigh for all of us. Each year a few of us are chosen to assist in the gift delivery.

PNJ: What would an elf do at a house?ELF: Lots of things. We keep the reindeer from leaving while Santa Claus is inside. They aren’t as well mannered as the movies show. We vacuum the Big Guy’s suit from the soot. We may have to keep a dog quiet until we can safely leave the house. We keep the sleigh runners greased, and we remove reindeer drop-pings. And we get some of the cookies and milk. Santa can’t eat all of that or there wouldn’t be room

for the toys after about 10 towns.

PNJ: Have you personally made the midnight trip?ELF: Sure have. I’m fortunate to have

made 47 trips. I wish I could make more, but it is a busy, stressful night. There are hundreds of trips Santa Claus didn’t se-lect me to join.

PNJ: Hundreds? Just how old are you?ELF: Yes, I’ve missed hundreds of them, but again, our ages are pro-prietary information. Let’s just say we’ve been around longer than you may think.

PNJ: What’s the hard-est thing about Christ-mas Eve?ELF: Two main things – Reindeer exhaust, and crowding in the sleigh. Ever wonder why our toes on our shoes are curled. You would curl your feet too, if you had to share the sleigh with thirt….uhm a bunch of elves and Santa.

PNJ: Is there anything you want to tell Lewis County readers?ELF: Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Has it ever occured to you in this fast-paced world that all your child may really want for Christmas is to spend a little more time with you? This year, why not try giving a gift that will al-low for just that?

Be honest. Have you ever hesitated purchasing a gift for your child be-cause you knew it would require you to help them put it together, participate in some way or supervise the use of the gift? Have you ever NOT bought a gift because it would in-fringe on your time? Most parents have.

To avoid getting in-volved, many parents, whether consciously or unconsciously, purchase gifts that will keep the kids occupied and serve as babysitters while they do something else. Video and computer games are excellent examples. Kids will literally sit in front of the TV or monitor for hours at a time playing these games. Although it is most often a solitary endeavor, friends can join in the fun with multiple player units, serving as a babysitter for multiple kids.

To make a positive im-pact on your kids’ lives, experts recommend giv-ing gifts that require fam-ily participation. Your kids probably won’t ap-preciate them now, but it will make a difference in the way they view the world and in the way they respond to others.

such as Chutes and Lad-ders, Life or Monopoly. If these silly games are not for you, there are many ed-ucational games that teach geography, history or sci-ence.

How about the gift of a good book that you can read to your child? The Harry Potter series is an excellent choice for chil-dren seven years or older. Each book is wonderfully imaginative and entertain-ing for adults as well as kids. If you’ve already read them, try the Chronicles of Narnia book series.

Flip on the TV and spend some time with the kids watching their favor-ite show. Notice how excit-ed they get because you’re there with them. It may be difficult to sit through an episode of Hey Arnold or Rug Rats, but try to keep your mind on the show. Asking questions about the characters will let your kids show off their knowl-edge. Sit through the com-mercials, too. During the holiday season, children are bombarded with com-mercials. Watch the adver-tisements with them and point out how the advertis-ers make the toys appear fun or cool. .

While you are spending time with your kids, it’s important to listen careful-ly. Often, during this time together, kids will express their thoughts or worries unrelated to the subject at hand. Instead of focusing on the board game you’re playing, focus on your child no matter where the conversation leads.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Kids love to play games, and since there’s a little bit of kid in all of us, why not get family and friends together dur-ing the holidays and have some plain, old-fashioned fun. Besides traditional board games, you can cre-ate spur-of-the-moment holiday activities with simple items you have around the house.

Christmas card toss finds a use for those outdated cards that you haven’t been able to just throw away. Distribute five cards to each player and place a laundry bas-ket about six feet in front

Simple games for kids during the holidaysof each person. With tim-er set, players attempt to toss their cards into their own basket. The winner is the one who makes the most baskets. Sound easy? You may be sur-prised.

Children will especial-ly enjoy playing the Santa Beard game. Divide into two teams and have play-ers cover their chins with petroleum jelly. Set up two bowls of cotton balls (smaller ones work best) on the opposite side of the room. At the signal, the first players in line run to their bowl of cot-ton balls and stick in their

chins, trying to pick up as many cotton balls as pos-sible (no hands allowed). They return to the line and the next player takes a turn. When all the play-ers have finished, remove the beards and count the cotton balls. The winning team is the one with the most cotton balls. In case of a tie, the team that fin-ishes first is declared the winner. (Be sure to have plenty of paper towels at hand.)

Santa’s bag is great for car trips or when you want a more quiet activity. The first player starts by say-ing, “I packed Santa’s bag

and in it I put a toy train.” The next person says, “I packed Santa’s bag and in it I put a toy train and a doll house.” Each person continues by repeating the previous phrase and add-ing a new item. If some-one forgets an item, they are out of the game. The winner is the last person who can remember every-thing.

Holidays are an op-portunity for a variety of activities. Help keep your season fun-filled by be-ing creative while making memories with family and friends.

Santa will be very busy this year because all the good little boys and girls in Lewis County have written their Christmas wishes to Santa Claus who has generously shared them with the Press-News Journal.

Canton and Highland kindergarten and first grade teachers helped their students write a letter to Santa. Some of the teachers wrote their lists for the children, but most first graders were able to write their own let-ters. Spelling and grammar has not been corrected, be-cause Santa knows what the children are telling him. Only first names were used.
