Fellow US soldierscharged in death

Five soldiers charged with negligent homicide after Chinatown soldierkilled himself in Afghanistan Danny Chen reportedly endured hazing

The family of Pvt. Danny Chen said he was bullied and hazed while in Afghanistan; the Army said he killed himself.

Eight soldiers werecharged yesterday in thedeath of a Chinatown sol-dier found dead inAfghanistan in October.

Danny Chen, 19, wasfound shot in the head in aguard tower, which theArmy attributed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

But the soldier’s parents— Chinese immigrantswho speak little English —demanded more answers,especially after reports sur-faced that Chen was bul-lied while in the Army.

An Army official re-vealed to CNN yesterday

that the charges stem fromhazing and abusing Chento the point where heeventually killed himself.

In one alleged instance,family spokesperson FrankGee said Chen was draggedout of bed while fellow sol-diers threw stones at himand mocked his last name,calling him “Jackie Chan.”

The eight soldiers — in-cluding one officer — facean array of charges, fromnegligent homicide to mak-ing false statements.

All of the soldiers servedwith Chen, who was born inthe U.S., in the 3rd Battal-

ion, 21st Infantry Regimentin Afghanistan.

Officials charged fivewith involuntarymanslaughter and negli-gent homicide.

Other charges includedmaltreatment, possibly inresponse to the bullying al-legations.

The charges, issuedfrom NATO’s regional com-mand in Afghanistan, in-cluded dereliction of dutyand making false state-ments.

There, four kids, ages 2,4, 7 and 11, eagerly un-wrapped dolls, princessdresses, basketballs,stuffed animals, a T-ballstand and even a bike.

“He was really upset,”she told Metro. Now, withthe new toys, “This madehis day.”

For JaeLyn Young, 4, thebox of Animal Planet seacreatures and a plastic

tiger were the perfectthing for the little animallover. He also hugged astuffed giraffe to his chest.

“I like tigers, pigs and li-ons,” he told Metro.

JaeLyn’s mother, Jas-mine Rosario, said employ-ees at the resource centerhelped her find permanenthousing after she and herson lived in a homeless

shelter. After losing herjob, she’s now workingpart time at a day care cen-ter, but there isn’t muchcash around for the holi-days. Instead, she’s savingup for his January birthday.

“I had no money to buythings," said Rosario.

It won’t happen on hiswatch. Incoming MTA chair-man Joseph Lhota said yes-terday he’s not looking toslash subway or bus service.

“I do not expect to haveany service cuts during my

tenure,” Lhota said, after atumultuous board battleover the MTA budget.

Some board membersfought vehemently to re-store some of the cuts toservice enacted by formerchair Jay Walder in 2010,asking the authority to allo-cate $20 million dollars tocreate 300 jobs and restoreunspecified services.

Lhota shot them down— calling the MTA’s fi-nances stable, but “fragile”— and asked board mem-bers to be patient.

“It is my hope and myprayer that someday wecan restore service cutsthat had happened lastyear,” Lhota said.

Lhota pledged that he’snot “contemplating” serv-ice cuts or fare increases in2012. Last year, the W andV trains were eliminated,many bus routes wereshortened and hundreds oftoll clerks were let go.

The popularity of U.S. in-tercity buses picking uppassengers at the curbrather than in a terminalhas been growing since theindustry reversed a 46-yeardecline in 2006, Joseph

Schwieterman, director ofDePaul’s Chaddick Institutefor Metropolitan Develop-ment in Chicago, said in atelephone interview. Bustraffic including traditionalservice grew this year at thefastest pace since 2008, theinstitute said in a study re-leased today.

Higher gasoline costsmake driving a car more ex-pensive at the same time asbuses offer access to freeWi-Fi and cheaper faresthan on planes and trains,Schwieterman said. Onceviewed as a last resort inthe U.S., bus travel is nowattracting more affluentriders, students and womentraveling alone, he said.
