“We’ve never been beaten,” Harlem Ambassadors player-coach Lade Majic Prophete proclaimed during a game Monday night against the Canton Chambernators.

And they weren’t either in the Monday game, beating the local team 90-62 in a game that lacked any real de-fense, but made up for it with entertainment. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

In introducing themselves, the Ambassadors entained with stunts of dribbling two balls, dribbling a ball while seated, twirling the ball on the arms and neck, balancing a ball on top of the hands, and hiking it like a football.

The Ambassadors led 22-8 after one quarter, with most Ambassador points from dunks.

In the second quarter, Majic and a teammate wrestled Chambernator and Canton R-V coach Cliff Hark to the ground, with local referee Craig Redmon giving a wres-tling three count. Majic then pranced round with a mock wrestling title belt.

The halftime score was 53-11.Greg Dilligard got the third quarter going with a dunk

for the home team. Majic agreed to allow each third quarter basket be worth five points, instead of two, re-sulting in 30 points, and contributing to the 75-48 third quarter score.

Various antics with uniform shorts, mock fouls, non-fouls, a football line of scrimmage, and dancing referees made the fourth quarter entertaining.

The Chambernators consisted of Lewis County elected officials Presiding Commissioner Fid Murphy, Sheriff David Parrish, and Prosecuting Attorney Jules DeCoster Culver-Stockton coaches Melissa Young and Shannon Finnis, Highland boys basketball coach Clyde Rosencrans, Canton Fire Chief Jeff McReynolds, and former coach Meleia Niemann, among others.

It’s almost deadline time in LaGrange.LaGrange City Administrator Mark

Campbell said the city “is in the process of ordering the money from the agencies” for eight residential properties in La-Grange in a buyout from the 2008 flood.

Campbell declined to list the proper-ties still in the negotiations or the amount sought from the government. He said property owners still can back out before the closing.

The closing is set to take place in early

ties will have a historic recardation, there will be asbestos checks of all the prop-erty, and then bids will be let for demoli-tion.

Campbell said it will likely be spring before the properties are razed.

In the fall of 2010, four commercial properties were razed, which had been bought out after the 2008 flooding.

The Harlem Ambassadors used gags, tricks and stunts in Monday night’s game at Canton R-V. However, in an afternoon school assem-bly, positive life skills were encouraged.“You have to be drug free and have a col-lege degree to wear this uniform,” said Ambassador’s player coach Lade Majic Prophete. Violators permanently leave the team. Although a dunk and some ball handling skills were demonstrated, and a dunking player hung upside down from the rim, the rest of the assembly was talk by the players. “You need to stay away from alcohol, stay away from weed, and stay in school,” said Majic, a University of Missouri Hall of Famer graduate. She calls Missouri her second home.Majic and several team members told personal stories of overcoming difficul-ties – family abuse; large families; and death of parents. The players who spoke

encouraged the students to perservere in difficult situations.Lade Majic said the group is the brain child of president of the board Dale Moss.“I tried to do a similar thing in New York, but it didn’t work. I went to Israel to play basketball, and I met Dale when I got back in 1997,” Lade Majic said. “That’s how beautiful God is, putting us together. In five and a half months, we had a team and were ready to travel.”She said the Harlem Ambassadors are the originators of having a woman coach the team. She said other teams are trying to copy the idea, using it as a gimmick. She insists it was God putting the team together rather than a gimmick that led her to the position.Through various points in her life, she gave up basketball. “Something kept happening and I kept coming back to bas-ketball. I gave up tennis shoes for pumps, then I went back to the basetball shoes,” she said.

Banks, government offices, and post offices will be closed that Thursday, and some of those may be closed at other times after that.

The office will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, Nov. 25.

Country Aire Retirement Estates would like to thank all of the veterans for their service to this great country. Our veterans went out to each lunch at the Solid Rock Café in Newark. They were stopped and thanked for their service by everyone they passed. After lunch, they walked through the Ford Car Museum where most of them re-membered owning one or two of the cars there. Their day continued when they got back with stories of their service, the people they met and the places they’ve seen. Again, we would like to say thank you veterans for your years of service.

An informational postal system meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 22 at the John Wood Community College at 1301 South 48th Street in Quincy.

The issue involves the proposed closure of the Quin-cy processing center, and consolidating it with Colum-bia Missouri operations.

The issue was discussed in 2009 and in essence shelved when Congress cut funding to the study.

A secondary issue less publicized by the United States Postal Service is a plan to change the delivery standard on first class mail. According to information from the federal register, the proposed standard of delivery for first class mail would change from one to three days for mail in the contiguous United States, it would go to two to three delivery days. Mail originating in Alaska, Ha-waii, or U.S. territories would go from one to five days to two to five days.

Vaughn Harshman, a postal union clerk president in Quincy is concerned about what the changes will do to local postal jobs and mail delivery service.

“The AMP (Area Mail Processing) study proposes to have the mail go through Columbia, Missouri. They tried to do this in 2009, and found they couldn’t save money sending it through Springfield (Illinois),” Harsh-man said.

“The Postal Service answer is apparently to degrade service by a day at least. They would meet the delivery standard by changing the standard,” Harshman said.

People are encouraged to write postal regional head-quarters and their congressmen (addresses are at the end of this article). Public comments are being accepted un-til December 7.

Harshman said while post offices are being told about the changes, the public is not being informed about them

Postal system meeting scheduledby the post office.

“The Postal service is not saying a thing about the delivery standard change. It is based on a proposed change to deliver, and not the current delivery standard.

The Postal Service has a Feb. 20 date of announcing such changes.

While the Postal Service is touting financial losses, Harshman said that is due to Congressional action of 2006 that required pre-funding of retirement. This means for the last four years, the Postal Service has had to shell out $5.5 billion per year for that. Harshman said if that factor is taken away, the Postal Service has made $600 million over the last four years. He said no other government or private agency is required to do this.

Postal Union officials urge people to contact Con-gress about House Bill 1351 which would address the pre-funding that has caused this problem with the Postal Service. Officials are also saying the Post Office has to ask Congress to give it access to its own money.

Postal union officials say the proposed changes would “devastate mail service.”

HISTORY

A Photo From Yesteryear

Want to live in a big mansion and be treated like a king or queen? For-get the lottery tickets. For-get the six figure jobs. Re-member the savings.

The secret of getting rich is all in the savings. Do tell, you say? Okay.

At the big kingly/queenly mansions that tourists pay good money to see, there are all kinds of artifacts: This painting from the 1500s. This book and the quill pen from the 1700s. This chair from the 1600s. This handheld electronic game from cir-ca 1487. Etc.

Tourists who come to such mansions will give low whistles alternated with gaping expressions of wonder.

But the secret of be-ing rich is never throw-ing anything away, but saving it. Save the toilet seat. Save the collection of 1980s box tops. Save the 2001 phone book. When these overcrowd one house, buy a bigger house. Again, throw away absolutely nothing. If the chair is broken, don’t fix it. If the book page is torn, don’t tape it. If the t-shirt has a hole in it preserve it in a special box.

After about three times of moving to bigger hous-

During my days on the farm in La Plata, Mo., I began thinking about my future. The more days that passed, the more serious I became about pursuing my education and employment options. This left me wondering where a good starting point might be.

As I looked through some old discharge papers from my time in the Air Force, I discovered some-thing that I’d overlooked the previous few years. As a military veteran with a disability rating award-ed to me, I was eligible to apply for the Veterans Rehabilitation and Em-ployments (VR&E) pro-gram benefits. If grant-ed the full benefits of the VR&E program, I could choose the college of my choice and the pro-gram would cover all tu-

The Cooperative Exten-sion Service, a division of the Land-Grant Univer-sity system, has dedicated itself to the purpose of delivering unbiased infor-mation to serve the prac-tical needs of the people. During the next several months, the Lewis County Extension Council, with assistance of the local ex-tension staff will be taking an in-depth look at what the needs of Lewis Coun-ty and its residents are. The council will then take measures to implement procedures to serve the lo-cal community needs.

A tourism development advisor from the Univer-sity of Missouri and Min-nesota was in Canton and Kahoka Friday to tell the communities about how to better develop local tour-ism. While in Canton, the man met with members of the Canton Chamber of Commerce, the Lewis and Clark Commerce Expedi-tion, and several other or-ganizations to teach those in the community how to gain more tourism. His favorite tale was that of searching up and down the Mississippi for a place to eat.

At a special called meet-ing of the Chamber of Commerce, it was voted to dispose of the factory building if a sufficient bid could be obtained. The C of C board in a meeting early last week had agreed that the building should be sold, but it wanted con-firmation from the entire membership before going ahead with plans. Each member of the Chamber of Commerce was notified by a letter of the meeting, and about 35 showed up.

The secret of getting rich is in the savinges to hold all the newly acquired statues, grand-pa’s secret trunk, and un-cle Arnie’s taped garden hose, then charge admis-sion. Use the first money to pay a part time tour guide. “This is the origi-nal light bulb used in the Steinbeck’s first house in the kitchen. This hammer was originally used by his great-grandfather to build a closet. This empty do-nut box was found stowed away in a desk drawer, and you’ll notice how product styles of donut boxes have changed in the decades...”

The problem with this get-rich secret, is it likely won’t happen to you. Per-haps the generation of the children, but more likely two or three generations past that, with each gener-ation never throwing away anything. somebody will make it big

You won’t get rich, be-cause Mom threw out your kindergarten gloves, the yellow-painted car tire, and that scuffy welcome mat. Your future genera-tions will thank you for saving. And what do you think you’re doing throw-ing out that corroded lead pipe? That’s your grand-son’s ticket to a life of wealth.

Veterans’ Advantagesition, books and supplies for my Bachelors degree.

Once approved by the Veterans Administration (VA), the choice of a col-lege home became rather simple. Culver-Stockton College was the only local college offering the specif-ic physical education and health degree I desired. Other than a visit to the college in the fall of 2007, I had little knowledge of C-SC and its home town of Canton.

All of that dramati-cally changed as I arrived on campus, started my freshman year, and be-gan soaking into the local community. Although my major changed to com-munication and I now live in town with my family, I can always credit my col-lege education as one of my veterans’ advantages.

Executive Director,Heartland ResourcesRita Cox of the Press-News Journal spoke with Janis VanMeter about Heartland Resources, the programs that they offer, and more

Janis VanMeterQUICKFACTS

NAME:Janis (Haines) VanMeter

JOB TITLE:Executive Director, Heartland Resources

HOMETOWN:Lewistown, MO

EDUCATION:Lewistown High School, Class of ’65, the largest Lew-istown class ever. Hannibal LaGrange University 2006, BS Organizational Manage-ment.

PAST EXPERIENCE:Foster Grandparent Director for Heartland Resources for 25 years; 12 years with MO Governor’s Council on Ag-ing; 14 years as founding co-Chair of MO Aging Federa-tion; 10 years as member of board of directors of Primaris, MO Quality (Healthcare) Im-provement Organization; 14 years experience with CLAIM, MO State Health In-surance Information Program (Medicare SHIP). BACKGROUND:Both my parents, Garrett and Joanne Haines, grew up in Lewistown. With grandpar-ents nearby, I never had to travel far for family events on either side of our family. Not having all the big city ame-nities has never bothered me. I believe we have many amenities cities don’t have. I genuinely enjoy hearing the peace and quiet – the town whistle is a great reminder of times gone by. Sometimes I have to laugh when we have to run a verify on a person I’ve known my whole life.

FAMILY:My husband Roger, son of Raymond and Elaine Van-Meter. Our three sons, Da-rin (Teresa) of Hannibal, Paul of Terrell, TX, and Seth (Susan) of Jenks, OK. Our three awesome grandsons, Josh (Hannibal), Micah and Aidan (Jenks, OK). I now understand my father-in-law’s statement, “If I’d known grandchildren were this much fun, I’d have had them first!”

FAVORITE QUOTE:I’m living proof of the George Eliot quote “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

Tell us about your company and the services you provide:

Heartland Resources, a 501c3 (not for profit) organization, has three major programs: In-Home Services (6 coun-ties), Lewis County Senior Nutrition Program and Foster Grandparent Pro-gram (10 counties). Our vision is simple “Our community-based services assist elderly and handi-capped Missourians secure indepen-dence with dignity while remaining where they most want to be – in their own homes.” Many times a few hours of service and/or a nutritious meal are the difference between independence and institutionalization.

Tell us some of your responsi-bilities:

No two days are the same. The best part of this job is getting to work with our team of dedicated individuals trying to make a difference in our area. Paper-work is the necessary evil in most ad-ministrative jobs these days – it follows 24/7/365. Through electronic commu-nication the playing field is more level – but always there. As long as someone else is driving, I can pretty much work during travel time, too.Job opportunities with your organiza-tion: Currently, we have openings in In-Home Service. We offer a very un-usual benefit – highly flexible schedules. One ad running in another county right now for In-Home Service workers offers 6-24 hours weekly. If you have a few hours, you need to call us.

What kind of volunteer pro-grams do you have and how can people get involved:

Hearing someone say, “I’m just a vol-unteer” has always been a pet peeve. Lewis County Nutrition could not sur-vive without volunteers! Many people do not know we cook only in Ewing. Meals are transported all over the coun-ty by volunteers. We do have centers in Ewing, Canton, and LaGrange for those

who wish to eat together. We need vol-unteers in the centers, too.

What do people need to know when face with caring for an el-derly parent or relative:

You are not alone! Not knowing what to do is not a negative; being smart enough to ask is a definite positive. Anyone can call our office at (573)209-3600 with any question. We may not have all the answers, but we sure know who to ask!

Advice/info on Medicare (where help is available):

Three Certified Medicare Counselors are available through our office (573)209-3600. There is never a charge for CLAIM (Community Leaders Assist-ing the Insured of MO) services. If you have a problem or a question, give us a

call. There is no such thing as a dumb question! If you are more comfortable

asking MO CLAIM, assistance is avail-able at (800)390-3330. (Very Important Info -We are in the Medicare Part D en-rollment period right now – early this year - you only have until December 7 to make changes for 2012)

Annual events:

Unfortunately, we are always look-ing for ways to fund our programs. It would be great to have only one annual event, but rising prices and shrinking funding dollars make the task monu-mental and ongoing. Canton Eagles recently presented us with $1000 for our nutrition program. It’s that kind of community support that keeps us going. Visit our website for more information: www.heartlandresourcesinc.org

Joseph Gatt, a veteran of film, television and the-ater, was the guest artist at Culver-Stockton Col-lege’s stage presentation

Joseph Gatt Performed As Culver-Stockton College Guest Artist

of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” a screenplay written by Tennessee Wil-liams. Gatt, who previous-ly starred in “Thor”, “Won-

der Woman”, “Chuck” and “Pulse” played the lead role of Stanley Kow-alski in “Streetcar.”

In 2005, Gatt immi-grated to the U.S., im-mediately booking lead roles in the Sy-Fy Chan-nel pilot “Surian;” the feature “Killing Ariel;” Wes Craven’s “Pulse,” opposite Kristen Bell; and Mary Lambert’s “Dark Path Chronicles.” Most recently, Gatt portrayed Gundroth the Frost Giant in “Thor.” Coming to Cul-ver-Stockton College and performing on stage after a 15 year hiatus would be a different and unique ex-perience for him. Gatt ad-mits he had no idea what to expect when he arrived at Culver-Stockton Col-

lege to begin his work on the guest artist production.

Not only was Gatt im-pressed with the experi-ence, the cast and the play, he also hoped to make a distinct impact upon those he worked with on the production. Gatt summa-rized his thoughts by shar-ing, “Working on stage is a learning experience for me as well, and I’m just hoping that the students I’m working with are

learning just as much as I am, both for themselves and from me and my ex-periences in professional theater.” Concerning the show itself, Gatt said, “I hope that a lot of people come see it and appreciate it; one, for the students be-cause they’re doing such a standup job, and two, I just think everyone should see the show because it is such an amazing piece of theater.”
