Developer rethinksunpopular mosque

Sharif El-Gamal shares new plan for Park51 Seeks community’sinput — and dollars But opponents say mosque still has no place there

This modern interior vision of Park51 may never be realized: Developer Sharif El-Gamal said he is starting from scratch on building the controversial mosque and community center.

No longer 15 stories. A newname. Severed ties with itsoriginal founder.

The controversial proj-ect known as the “GroundZero mosque” is a far cryfrom its original vision.

“Everything was back-ward,” lead developer SharifEl-Gamal, 37, told The NewYork Times. “We’re goingback to basics.”

El-Gamal is prepared toscrap the proposed 15-sto-ry structural redesign ofthe Burlington Coat Facto-ry building, depending onthe community’s input.

“If the community onlywants four or five floors,it’s going to be four or five

floors,” El-Gamal said. He’s even recruited the

aunt of a 9/11 victim to hisadvisory board.

But Barry Zelman, wholost his brother Kenneth in

the attacks, said he will notsupport a mosque so closeto Ground Zero, whetherit’s four stories or fifteen.

“I believe they have theright to practice their reli-

gion,” said Zelman, 56, ofRoxbury, N.J. “I still thinkit’s in bad taste. I still ques-tion the location.”

The mosque portion ofthe building has been re-branded “PrayerSpace.”But it may be five years be-fore the property under-goes any changes, as El-Gamal still needs to raiseup to $10 million. He haseven severed ties with theproject’s original imam,Feisal Abdul Rauf. El-Gamal said the two hadpersonality and philosoph-ical clashes.

Angry anniversary

Pamela Geller, the outspo-ken writer behind the con-servative blog “AtlasShrugs” has called for aprotest on Sept. 11 nearPark51. She’s calling it the“911 Freedom Rally.”

Opponents to the mosquewill meet at 2 p.m. atBroadway and Park Place,

Geller announced, to op-pose “this 15-story middlefinger to America,” as shecalls it.

“We have requesteda meeting severaltimes,” Menin toldMetro.

Menin said that, while the communityboard is not interestedin structural blue -prints, they are hopingto have input into thetypes of public activi-ties the center offers.

We're smack in the middleof Discovery Channel's“Shark Week,” and NewYorkers may be surprisedto know just how manysharks can be found rightoff our own shoreline.

Chris Paparo, a shark-keeper at Atlantis MarineWorld in Riverhead, LongIsland, said sand tigersharks and thresher sharksregularly swim throughcity waters — in New YorkHarbor, off Coney Islandand even right under theStatue of Liberty’s nose.

“I’m not just talkingabout little fin sharks,” hesaid. “I’m talking fairlylarge sharks.”

In June, 18 baskingsharks were spotted near

Westhampton. The sharksaren’t a danger to people, but officials closed beachesanyway. Even great whitescan be found off the coastof New York — but expertssay not to fear their teeth.

“The chance of a sharkattack is extremely low,”said Aaron Rice, a marinelife researcher at CornellUniversity.

So I’d like to ask theTransit Authority pooh-bahs, whose grand schemeruns the trains, why are we,the local riders, the micedown here? I mean whoelse is on this ship anyway?Isn’t it the mice’s ship?

Brooklyn Bridge Park willbe completed with thehelp of a cash infusionbrought in by more high-rise apartment buildingserected on park grounds.

In a deal that was final-ized yesterday, city andstate officials agreed to al-low additional privatehousing to be built in thepark. The developmentwill help provide fundsbadly needed to completethe popular park, say sup-porters.

Legislators who first op-posed the city’s plan to addmore housing acquiesced tothe compromise once thecity agreed the high-rises

would be shorter and small-er than originally planned.

Planners also envision askating rink, a year-roundrecreation area and tenniscourts. Once completed, the now-25-acre park willeventually be expanded to85 acres, taking over EastRiver piers not currentlybeing used. State Sen.Daniel Squadron also an-nounced that the park willinclude a temporary poolfor the next five summers, and a recreational “bub-ble” to make the park us-able during the winter.

FCC report:Web speedimprovingBroadband speeds on aver-age are within 80 percent ofwhat major Internet serviceproviders advertise — a bigimprovement from twoyears ago, according to agovernment study.

The Federal Communica-tions Commission studiedcable, DSL and fiber-to-the-home services at 13 top U.S.broadband providers.

The agency found Veri-zon Communications’sfiber network was best atmeeting or exceeding ad-vertised maximum down-load speeds, while Cablevi-sion Systems was the worst.

Overall, the numberswere a big boost from 2009,when data-indicated down-load speeds were often

The study used MRIscans to investigate the ef-fects of fatty acids on emo-tion when directly injectedinto the stomach.

Scientists played mourn-ful music and showed sadimages to a group of 12participants before givinghalf the group fatty acids

THE WORDMetro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]

Does she know howto make an appear-ance or what?

Sandra Bullock, ahot 47, surprised photogra-phers and stars alike on thered carpet for the premiereof “The Change-Up” onMonday night. She showedup midway through thepress interviews to snuggleup to Ryan Reynolds, 34, herco-star in 2009’s “The Pro-posal.” Reynolds, who wasgiving interviews alongsideco-star Jason Bateman, brokefree from reporters to greether, per People magazine. The two exchanged a peckon the cheek and a hug.

Of course, having two

stars who have recentlybeen through divorces(while dodging rumors oftheir own shacking up)popping up together infront of a bazillion re-porters is all a ploy to gen-erate interest in the factthat “The Change-Up” isopening this Friday. Butstill! This makes me hopethat they’ll get married andraise Bullock’s baby andjust be adequate but unin-teresting actors togetheruntil end times. And is itjust me, or is anyone else in-trigued about “The Change-Up” now?

“Transcending Form,” amuddled dance theaterpiece by John Byrne playingone night a week down-town, is formed through afriendship between Byrneand David LaChapelle, acelebrity photographer anddirector who made the 2005krumping documentary“Rize.” LaChapelle’s artmashes up contemporaryand classical material, andByrne’s piece mashes upgratuitous nudity, dated in-terpretive dance and mime— as well as awkward at-tempts to include LaChap-

pelle’s images onstage byprinting them on life-sizeswatches of fabric hung ona clothesline. Wildly mis-matched performers, rang-ing from experienced mod-ern dancer Debra Zalkind togreen newcomers of allshapes and sizes, act out anobscure plot involvingmasks worn atop othermasks, Latin-soul singer Gi-na Figueroa, angels andnaked boys.

The title gives the gameaway: form is the essence oftime-based art, and Byrne,an alum of the Paul Taylor

Dance Company, has littlesense of how to manage theformal demands of an hour-long show, let alone tran-scend them.

If you really want to ex-perience LaChapelle’s art-work, go to the lobby of the

Lever House, where Byrne’sdancers performed withand around an installationof his pieces until the build-ing management cancelledthe shows last month. Enor-mous paper chains printedwith his trademark nudes, ahuge collage and windowcircles made of photograph-ic stickers of the samenudes surrounded six per-formers; the performancewas much more interestingthan the one in the theater.

The summer heat may beinspiring you to give yourstove a break — but couldyou give up cooked foodsfor good? Proponents of theraw food diet say you canand should.

The raw food diet com-prises unheated foods andfoods heated to no more

than 115 degrees. Advocatesof the diet claim that it

wards away cancer, diabetesand other health problems, because powerful enzymesthat aid in health are notdestroyed through cooking.

“There’s no question inmy mind that this is theway man was meant to eat,”says Brian Clement, Ph.D.,the co-director of Hip-

pocrates Health Institute, which incorporates a rawfood diet to support thehealing of its patients. “It’snot magic, it’s chemistrywe’re talking about.”

But not everyone is tout-ing the diet’s benefits.

“Scientifically, there isn’ta lot of evidence that sup-ports the benefits of a rawfood diet above and beyondwhat a healthy vegan orvegetation diet would of-fer,” says Monika Saigal, aregistered dietitian. “Thereare some nutrients that areactually more availablewhen foods are cooked.”

Saigal also says that go-ing on the diet takes work.

“I think for the majorityof the population, it’s verydifficult to meet your nutri-tional needs on a raw foodsdiet. It takes a lot of timeand preparation to makesure you’re getting the nu-trients you need,” she says.

If you think the diet isright for you, Clement firstrecommends reducing yourintake of meat and dairy, and then going totally rawon a gradual basis.

“You don’t have to takethis lock, stock and barrel,”he says. “Take your time, and it’s so easy to do.”

Everyone knows it’spolite to open thecar door for yourdate — and we

hope that everyone knowsit’s a nice touch whenwomen remember to dothis, too. But what hap-pens if you live in a citywhere you’re more likelyto take a cab? If you holdthe cab door open, yourdate will be forced toscoot across the entireback seat to make roomfor you. Not so polite now, huh?

So here’s some taxicabetiquette for you: Openthe door, close it behindyour date, and then walkaround the other side toget in. Note to slow walk-

ers: Impatient taxi driversand busy city streets maycause you to lose track ofyour date during this ma-neuver. In this case, eithersay “I’ll get in the otherside” to avoid any confu-sion — or simply get inthe backseat first andscoot across. (People whodon’t read this columnmay think you’re beingrude, of course, so you

might want to explainyourself the first time youdo this.) If you’re luckyenough to be treated tosome proper taxicab eti-quette, it’s a nice gestureto lean over and openyour date’s door from theinside. Consider it the ur-ban equivalent of unlock-ing the driver’s side doorafter you’ve been helpedinto the passenger seat.

However busy you get,the most important ruleof etiquette is this: Tipyour driver!

Need a reason to practicegood taxi manners?

Because you’re more likelyto get lucky once you’re in-side the cab if you do. Butgetting busy has its owncode of etiquette, too. Wethink limiting yourself tosome sneaky handwork isthe decent thing to do; un-less, perhaps, one of you isalready lying down restingyour head in your partner’slap. But make no mistake, the cabbie totally knowswhat you’re up to. (But isn’tthat kind of the point?) Forsomething a little more full-on, consider renting a limowith a privacy screen instead— it’d be just like promnight but without all theteen drama and bad hairdos.

It’s the little things, like good taxi etiquette, that’ll make your date remember you for all the right reasons.

It was just after 11:30 p.m.Monday night when NassauCounty Executive EdMangano and New York Is-landers owner CharlesWang began the unpleasanttask of walking to the roomwhere media, business andunion leaders and grass-

roots employees waited forthem to publicly acknowl-edge what was alreadyknown.

The grim looks etched onWang’s and Mangano’sfaces reiterated the evident— Nassau County residentswould not allow their taxdollars to be used to build anew arena.

The reaction from resi-dents to Mangano’s $400million arena plan wasoverwhelmingly negative.

Fifty-seven percent of the1,158 votes cast Mondaywere against Mangano’spublicly funded Nassau Col-iseum. With results from

two precincts remaining tobe tabulated, the gap be-tween votes against and forthe arena was 21,560.

Conciliatory after the de-feat, Mangano said “we willfind a path that brings peo-ple together. We have suf-fered for 10 years not beingable to come together. I amso confident that we willfind a way.”

Mangano and Wang areconcerned about the futureviability of Nassau Countyas a public and private sec-tor region and an area toraise families if the Is-landers leave. Equally as im-portant to Wang, is what

will happen to the Is-landers?

Wang has repeatedlystated he will honor thelease that keeps the team inthe Nassau Coliseum until2015. But he’s also said he’llconsider options.

Those could include sell-ing the franchise or reloca-tion. Wang didn’t commenton that Monday.

“We have a season toconcentrate on with a teamthat is bursting with ayoung corps of talent,”Wang said.

Isles’ options

Metro looks at whereCharles Wang and the Is-landers could move. Hereare the top 4 most likely:

1 Long Island Technically this isn’t moving, but staying onthe island is what Wangwants most. They’d justneed to find a third plan— and get it to pass avote.

2 Willet’s Point, QueensReports last year indi-cated Mets COO JeffWilpon was interested inbuilding an arena acrossfrom Citi Field. Wilpon’smoney woes may pre-clude this option.

3 Barclays Center, Brooklyn The Nets’ newhome could use anothertenant. Reportedly it isn’tdesigned for hockey, butwould be a great spot.

4 Kansas City, Mo.The scariest option.Wang has looked here inthe past, however.

Rookie Wilkerson makingimpact early in training campQuarterback Mark Sanchezhas been the only rookie tostart a season opener forRex Ryan. Now, Muham-mad Wilkerson appearsready to do thesame.

Ryan said thatWilkerson is the“starting defensiveend right now” after prac-tice yesterday.

“Right now, I can’t reallythink about starting,”Wilkerson said. “If I’m ontrack to be the starter then

so be it.”Wilkerson has been the

buzz of training camp. He’sthe ideal, big-bodied pass

rusher Ryan needs offthe edge in his 3-4defense. At 6-foot-4, 315 lbs., Wilk-erson has the size

to clog things up inrun defense and long armsto fill up passing lanes. TheTemple product is alreadyearning rave reviews fromthe coaching staff after oneday in pads. During Mon-

day’s afternoon sessionWilkerson lined up alongthe right side of the defen-sive line and drew the at-tention of the veterans ondefense.

His performance waseven more noteworthy giv-en that he was goingagainst one of the league’stop left tackles — D’Brick-ashaw Ferguson.

you could say it was a unionmade in shelter heaven.Their stuff — her painted

door by the famous graffitiartist Neck Face and theBanksy print Volchkoscored early in the megastreet artist’s career, for ex-ample — blended seamless-ly together.

“We both have a lot of af-fordable, re purposed, foundobjects. So it’s either some-one else’s memories or ourown,” Guerra says of pieceslike a workbench once usedby Volchko’s grandfather

that they turned into a cof-fee table. Her own memo-ries surface in the hyper-col-orful items from her travels:Bed throws from London’sBrick Lane and Tunisia or anold department store signfrom Montreal. “You don’thave to spend a ton to deco-rate,” she says.
