Agenda

What is OpenCourseWare?

Usage of OpenCourseWare

Goals

Use of standards

What is OpenCourseWare?

MIT started in 2001 with two main objectives:

Provide free, searchable, access to MIT's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world.

Create an efficient, standards-based model that other institutions may emulate to openly share and publish their own course materials."

What is OCW?

An OpenCourseWare is a free and open digital publication of high quality educational materials, organized as courses for faculty, students, and self-learners throughout the world.

An ocw is a collection of high-quality learning materials presented in the form of courses

An ocw is not a distance-learning initiative: there are no degrees granted and in most cases no student/faculty interactions

OCW materials are there for the taking and for transformation.

OCW part of the Open Movement

OCW is only one type of Open Educational Resource (OER).

OERs are only one type of Open Content.

We have much to share with each other.

Goals

How can we improve the discoverability and reuse, of OCW courses?
OCW Consortium Technology Committee 2006-2007

Something that was easy to implement

That didnt require a lot of technical knowledge, or wading through metadata specifications

By using web technologies we wouldnt isolate the metadata/content

This wouldnt just be for OCW ConsortiumIt wouldnt be an education-only solutionBut it would also enable content syndication with the web-at-large

Discoverability of courses

using Dublin Core via RSS

Relatively simple to implement

Dublin Core as a metadata element set

DC has a base level of descriptive metadata, and it could describe an OCW course

DC was understandable to novices

IEEE LOM is fairly complex and would provide more description, but we felt the likelihood of getting lots of sites doing high quality metadata was low
