2011 Letter from the Team:2011 has been a year of weather extremes thus far, from crippling winter storms to a record number of deadly tornadoes. Flooding rains across the Mississippi River basin have produced record fl oods with a very high cost in property damage. Now our attention turns to the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season and while we’re all hopeful that this hurricane season does not follow the unprecedented year of weather extremes we have witnessed so far, we must all be ready well in advance for any potential tropical system. Advanced preparation will go a long way to make life a little easier for you and your family before a storm arrives, during the storm and after the storm leaves.

Expectations and forecasts for this season are for another year of above normal activity as La Nina (favorable for tropical development) is gradually weakening in the equatorial Pacifi c. The opposite of El Nino, La Nina features cooler than normal equatorial Pacifi c waters and this traditionally leads to less wind shear across the tropical basin of the Atlantic. The La Nina event should fade out completely this summer if long term forecasts hold. End result, we would expect a more normalized pattern across the tropical Atlantic to arrive later in the hurricane season. That being said, you should not prepare for the hurricane season based on the forecast number of storms. It only takes one storm to make for a busy season and this is what you and your family need to be prepared for. We all remember 1992 with powerful category 5 Hurricane Andrew as it raked across south Florida. That season produced only 6 named storms. In contrast, 2010 had 19 named storms but impact on Florida and the United States was minimal in comparison.

We hope this 10 News Hurricane Guide will serve you well this Atlantic hurricane season. Inside you’ll fi nd valuable information to cover all aspects of storm preparation, a detailed tracking guide featuring tropical facts and fi gures, plus important supply and medical checklists to ensure you are ready for any storm. Always remember, 10 News meteorologists, your local Weather Authority will be with you through this hurricane season with the latest information and forecasts to keep you ahead of the storm. Feel free to contact any of us if you have questions or comments. Visit our weather webpage at WTSP.com or search the iPhone / Android app store (keyword WTSPweather) for the latest severe weather information.

Best wishes for a safe season, 10 News Weather Authority

HAVE A FAMILY PLANThe most essential part of hurricane preparation is having a plan for your family long before a storm arrives. The good thing about planning is that once you have a plan in place, it’s good for years to come. You can make adjustments to your plan each year before hurricane season begins.

Here are some of the things we recommend to help you better prepare for hurricane season:

★ Know ahead of time if you will evacuate and where you will go if you do. Be familiar with evacuation routes and stay connected to 10 News for the latest tropical storm information.

★ Have supplies ready to go, or if you plan to stay, make sure your home is stocked with hurricane supplies that can get you through a storm.

★ If leaving, make sure you have important papers like home insurance documents, medical insurance cards and prescription medication. Have cash on hand and a full tank of gas. Pack clothes, personal hygiene products, cell phone chargers and a list of important numbers you may need.

★ Turn off natural gas in your home if you leave. ★ Have an out of area contact for all members of your family to check in

with after the storm.EVACUATION PREPARATIONSEach county has an offi cial evacuation route which breaks down evacuations according to zones. A hurricane evacuation will be ordered by level A, B, C, D or E. Coastal communities may be among the fi rst to be evacuated. Make sure you know which zone you are in.

★ Keep a full tank of gas in your car if an evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies and unable to pump gas during power outages.

★ Make transportation arrangements with friends or your local government if you do not own a car. Let others know where you will be. Have a pre-determined meeting site and contact phone number out of the area. Also leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather.

★ Listen to a battery-powered NOAA radio or follow local evacuation instructions (some cell phones and laptops can be used for this purpose as well). ★ If you rely on a portable analog television for updates, it will need to be replaced with a new digital set.★ Evacuate when instructed to do so. Do not drive in flooded areas, avoid downed power lines. Follow evacuation routes and do not take shortcuts,

they may be blocked. ★ Take your disaster supplies kit. Be sure to include prescription medications, important insurance documents and pet supplies. ★ Secure your home: Turn off natural gas. Lock doors and windows. ★ Unplug electrical equipment such as radios and televisions, and small appliances such as toasters and microwaves. Leave freezesers and

refrigerators plugged in unless there is a risk of flooding.

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTYNow that you have a plan for your family, it’s time to make sure your home is secured inside and out:

★ Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.

★ Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.

★ Use garage door braces to keep air out and reinforce home structure.

★ B e sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed or removed if necessary. Take in patio furnishings, hanging plants and other yard ornaments. ★ Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts. ★ Consider building a safe room. ★ Put vehicles in a garage or if outside, move away from trees.★ Boat safety is paramount. Determine how and where to

secure your boat.

An emergency can occur any ti me. It can be weather related, like a hurricane, or a public health emergency. No matt er what the cause, there are steps that you can take now to be bett er prepared to meet the challenge of an emergency.

Create a plan, practi ce it, check your emergency supplies and update informati on as necessary. Give a copy of the plan to each family member and friend that is part of the plan.

And remember, that for medical emergencies, your local HCA hospital emergency departments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – all are Accredited Chest Pain Centers and Certi fi ed Advanced Primary Stroke Centers, staff ed and equipped for even the most criti cal medical emergencies.

Hurricane Guide HintsMobile Phone – They will usually work even when the power is out. Use them

sparingly and have a back up battery and/or car charger. Have a contact outside of the

aff ected area to use as a common check point if you have multiple family members or

friends in the aff ected area. Consider purchasing solar battery chargers.

Important Documents – Have a safe box for all of your important documents.

Birth certifi cates, passports, titles, etc. should be located in one safe place, a container

that will protect them and can be easily taken with you when you evacuate.

Generator – If you have a generator, have a plan. Know what you will plug into it

and when. Run the generator before the storm to ensure that it works and that you know

how to use it. Run the generator in an open air area.

Boat – Remember to secure your boat appropriately and early. Doing this sooner rather

than later allows time for other preparations you may need to complete at home and will

help relieve traffi c along the coast.

Evacuation Plan – Have a plan, evacuate if asked. Know where you are going,

consider pet options. “Run from the water, hide from the wind” means evacuate (run)

if you are in a fl ood zone or stay (hide) at home if you do not face a storm surge threat.

Prescriptions – Don’t forget to pack your prescription medication. Just like your

important documents, you will want to be able to grab your medications and go. Be

sure you have enough medication to last at least a week, two if possible.

Hurricane Kit – Make sure your kit is ready to go long before the storm arrives.

Avoid the last minute rush and run on needed materials.

NOAA Weather Radio – Stay tuned to the latest severe weather warnings,

current conditions and forecasts.

After The StormNow that the storm is over, what do you do? Is it safe to venture outside? When can you expect help to arrive? We’ve got some answers just for you. For a detailed guide, go to

http://www.prepare.org/basic/afthurr.htm

• Continue listening to local radio or television stations or a NOAA Weather Radio for information and instructions.

• Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding, even after the hurricane or tropical storm has weakened.

• Stay away from flood waters. Drive only if absolutely necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges.

• Standing water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

• Avoid disaster areas. Your presence might hamper rescue and other emergency operations, and put you at further risk.

• Help injured or trapped persons. Give first aid where appropriate. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of further injury. Call for help.

• If you evacuated, return home when local officials tell you it is safe. • Avoid loose or dangling power lines; immediately report them to the

power company, police or fire department. • Take pictures of the damage, both of the building and its contents, for

insurance claims. • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are certain

it is not contaminated.
