2011 is now done and dusted and what a year it was.

When we think back over the year, one word seems to come to mind… BIG!

Last year we saw some big enhancements across Cases, Legislation, Journals, Books and EU as well as some big changes to help make your research that little bit easier.

Please take some time to take a look through how we’ve enhanced the service in a little bit more detail. And make sure you check out our 2011 round-up video on YouTube.

None of these enhancements would have been possible without your feedback and continued support and we thank you for that.

But as always, we’re not resting on our laurels, with this year looking to be busier than ever, we are excited about the opportunities that 2012 will bring.

The Westlaw UK Team

WELL, WE MADE IT.

CAS

ES

It was a big year for cases with over 8,500 cases added to Westlaw UK in 2011. Other case related enhancements for the year include:

ENGLISH REPORTS IN PDFWe’re pleased to let you know that all of the English Reports are now available in PDF, so your days of photocopying printed versions to cite in court will be a thing of the past.

APPEAL STATUS TRACKERAppeal Status Tracker enables you to track cases on appeal to the Court of Appeal, Civil Division or to the Supreme Court. This means no more phone calls to the court to check the status of your cases.

Westlaw UK currently track appeals in progress from the lower courts to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court as well as applications for permission to appeal from lower courts to the Supreme Court.

APPEAL OUTSTANDING ICON FOR CASESThe Appeal Outstanding icon appears next to your search results and at the top of case documents so that you can instantly tell the status of your case.

You can find the icon alongside any existing status icon, but it will be removed once there is an outcome to the appeal.

As with all icons, you just need to hover your cursor over it to be reminded of its meaning.

ENHANCEMENTS TO THE CASE ANALYSIS DOCUMENTS

Significant Legislation Cited

In 2011 we made two enhancements to the Case Analysis documents.

The first was the addition of a new link in the left hand menu for Significant Legislation Cited, which have been specially picked out by our editorial team.

There will also be active links to any EU legislation referred to in a case.

DEFINITION SEARCHING ACROSS CONTENTWe also added a new search option to the Cases and Journals pages.

You now have the ability to search for legal terms and phrases that have been defined in cases and journal articles.

This builds on the Statutory Definition search option that currently sits on the Legislation page.

JURISDICTIONAL VIEWThe Jurisdictional View feature on Westlaw UK allows you to know instantly whether a provision is relevant to your jurisdiction and is a clear indicator of when the text of a provision varies depending on jurisdictions.

The Browse section of the legislation database is split up according to jurisdictions: UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and then broken down into the type of legislation available in that region.

You also have the option to navigate between jurisdictions. When looking at a piece of legislation where a provision varies depending on the jurisdiction, an information message is displayed at the top of your document. The message indicates the presence of different versions.

Appeal History & Status

Last year we also added a new section for Appellate History & Status.

Within this section you can find the direct, reported progress of the decision through to appeal, with cases displayed in chronological order.

Once the appeal judgment has been received it will be published on Westlaw UK with the citations replacing the appeal status entry.

You can also see the information appear in the Graphical History chart, where available.

BOOKS AND LOOSELEAFSTo grow is to evolve, innovate, learn and prosper.

Last year we expanded our online library, growing our existing list of 28 titles to over 70 books and looseleafs and we did it all in just 6 months.

The best thing is that we plan to continue growing as you grow, therefore continuing to offer you unprecedented online access to some of the most important insights from the industry’s leading minds.

GETTING THE DEAL THROUGHGetting the Deal Through (GTDT) is a suite of multi-jurisdictional books where each book focuses on a specific practice area. The titles, updated on an annual cycle, provide international guidance to regulations in 46 practice areas and more than 150 jurisdictions. This is now available to Westlaw UK subscribers as part of their existing subscription. GTDT is not part of subscriptions for Crime PAS and Scots PAS customers or for Looseleaf Standalone customers.

The GTDT series is primarily aimed at international legal practitioners who are looking to analyse overseas jurisdictions and optimise the value of commercial deals abroad.

REFRESHED USER INTERFACELast year Westlaw UK undertook a facelift with the user interface getting a bit of a refresh. We tidied up a few sections so that it’s even easier for you to use and making it a little more aesthetically pleasing.

We updated the icons as well as the colour of our links from red to blue to give a fresher feel to the service and making it easier for you to navigate, search and find.

IMAGES IN DOCUMENTSOne of the more visual enhancements of the year was that of viewing images within documents.

Any image that is published within a case report or journal article is now shown in line with the text of that document on Westlaw UK.

You can now save, print and e-mail the document with all images appearing as they should within the text, and not as separate documents.

This means you don’t have to worry about printing them separately and then having to re-sort the pages to insert the image in the correct place.

LINKS FROM PLC TO WESTLAW UK We are constantly looking to help the legal system function better. For that to happen, you need to be able to get the information you need quickly and easily.

In 2011 we were pleased to announce the linking of legislation references in PLC’s continuously maintained content to the correlating documents in Westlaw UK. Giving you new possibilities, new opportunities and new choices.

This linking is now complete and available to all Westlaw UK customers who subscribe to PLC.
