Georgia StateFirst Meeting

Tidbits about the 2011 Schedule:

The Tigers open the Will Hall Era on Thursday, Sept. 1 at South Alabama. It marks the fi rst meeting in the two school’s history. USA is one of four opponents that the Red and White will face for the fi rst time this season. Tarleton State, Central State and Georgia State are the remaining three.

West Alabama appears on television twice during the 2011 season, all selected for the Gulf South Conference’s regional broadcast. The Tigers travel to West Georgia (Oct. 20) before hosting in-state foe North Alabama (Oct. 27). UWA was featured four times during the 2010 season and posted a 3-1 record.

West Alabama hosts Southern Arkansas for Homecoming 2011 - marking the fi rst homecoming meeting between the two schools. UWA looks to snap a two-game losing streak to the Muleriders.

For the fi rst time since 2008, West Alabama will face two in-state schools in North Alabama and South Alabama. The two in-state opponents in 2008 were Con-cordia and UNA.

The two longest standing foes in Tiger history return to the 2011 slate. The Tigers have faced Delta State 56 times and North Alabama 63 times in the 80 year history of UWA football.

The Tigers will face three schools from the state of Arkansas in 2011 (Harding, Southern Arkansas and Arkansas Tech). UWA has faced atleast fi ve schools from the Natural State over the past three seasons. The last time the Red and White faced no more than three schools from Arkansas was 1997 (Arkansas Tech, Arkansas-Monticello and Henderson State).

2011 West Alabama Tiger Preview

First-year head coach Will Hall looks to build upon recent success in the Ti-ger history as he replaces Division II Hall of Famer Bobby Wallace at the reigns of the program. A large part of the continued success for the 30 year old coach is on-going development of the UWA offense, which Hall brought to Livingston four seasons ago. The Tiger offense ranked 14th nationally in total offense a season ago and was fourth in the Gulf South Conference in scoring offense.

The Tigers return a pair of running backs for the 2011 campaign, including T-Ray Mitchell, who fi nished his fi rst season with the Red and White third in the GSC in yards with 76 per game. Returning with Mitchell is Don Smith, who tallied 216 yards on the year.

“We think we have the possibility to be the best in the conference and in the country at running back. We return T-Ray Mitchell and Don Smith from last year. They were a really good combination for us last season. T-Ray was inconsistent at times and he knows it. He’s been working hard to improve that aspect of his game. He’s got a ton of ability and has been working his tail off to improve. We expect big things from him this year. Don is one of the most con-sistent people on our team. He works his tail off trying constantly to improve. It will be Don’s senior year and he’s showing a lot of senior leadership this offseason. Don can do a lot of things well. He’s not the biggest or fastest guy in the world, but he works hard doing everything you ask him to do,” stated Hall.

Joining the mix will be Hinds Community College transfer Matt Willis along with Clawsondy Cayo and Ken Johnson.

“Matt Willis, who was a Mississippi Junior College All-State selection from Hinds Community College, has been with us all spring and has a ton of athletic ability. He gives us a lot of depth at that position and will really help improve our run game. Ken Johnson and Clawsondy Cayo are two young men that will also help provide depth,” said Hall.

Hall also looks for big things from Josh Senkbeil at fullback, saying, “We don’t play a fullback a lot, but when we do those duties belong to Josh Senk-beil. Josh is a great, hard-nose competitor. He works hard in the weight room. He can play some running back for us and just brings a lot to our backfi eld and team.”

Hall and staff will experience a change at quarterback for the fi rst time in three seasons as Gary Johnston takes command of the Tiger offense.

“We lost a good one in Deon Williams. He helped in the resurgence of this football program, but we have a great guy coming in behind him in Gary Johnston. We think he’s just a really good football player. He’s been in our program for three years. He will be a redshirt junior. He knows the system inside and out. He’s like a coach on the fi eld. Gary is a little different from Deon in he’s a good runner, but doesn’t have the arm strength that Deon has. He’s a tremendous competi-tor, a great leader, and a winner. Our guys love him and he’s going to have a big year,” Hall said.

Adding depth at the quarterback position will be Wes Mounger, Joseph Patterson along with Rick Boone and Jeremy McAdams.

“Wes Mounger rotated between quarterback and wide receiver during the spring. Wes was a quarterback his whole career in high school and junior college. We signed him and put him at receiver, but he will rotate during the spring to give us more depth at quarterback. Joseph Patterson is a guy we signed last year from Lauderdale County. He’s a strong, athletic runner. He has to come along in our passing game, but he’s working hard to improve in that area,” Hall said. “Rounding out our competition in that area are Rick Boone and Jeremy McAdams. Both of those young men are great. They do anything you ask of them.”

The offensive line will be younger than it has been in years past with the loss of seniors as the Tigers lost four seniors from the 2010 squad, including Jared Porter, Justin

Moore and Doug Stroud, but Hall is pleased with the group that steps in to fi ll those holes.

“We had a good spring with our offensive line. We know they are a young group, but they continued to improve each and every day they went onto the fi eld during the spring,” Hall stated.

“When you talk about our offensive line, you have to start with Chuck Curry. He’s a senior that we expect to be a great football player. He has the potential to be an all-conference/all-American type player for us. Austin Cichon is going part time so he will not be able to go through spring ball with us this time. He will also be a senior next season. Then we have a lot of young guys. At the tackle spot we have Ethan Corkren and Taylor Burnett. They’ve been in our program two years now and they have become a lot stronger and a lot bigger. They are two promising, young tackles that we think it is time for this to come along and be contributors.

“At center, we have a young man in Skeeter Sellers that played in every game last year as a true freshman backing up Justin Moore. We think Skeeter has the chance to become a really good football player. He’s a smart, young man with a 4.0 GPA. He’s got a lot stronger this offseason and we think he can be a good one. Behind him we have a JUCO transfer from Jones County Ju-nior College in Caleb McGruder. He’s a junior college all-star. He and Skeeter will have a nice time battling it out for center this spring.

“At guard, we have a few young guys that have a lot of potential. Sam Caldwell from Prattville will be a true sophomore. He played a lot last season as a true freshman. Sam is a big guy with a lot of athletic ability for a guy his size. He’s become a lot stronger. Josh Buchanan will be a redshirt sophomore. He has worked his tail off this offseason. He’s big, mean and aggressive and we hope he can come along and help. John Seaman is a redshirt freshman that is also big and aggressive and we think he can help us. Kody Lunsford is another young man who redshirted last season and we think he can add some depth along with Dylan Horton.”

The Tigers return nine starters on the defensive side of the ball with depth at linebacker and in the secondary. Hall will look to replace a lot on the defen-sive front.

“We have to replace three defensive ends from last season and we think we have done a good job of replacing those guys through recruiting. We’ve brought in a guy in Darion Gabrieal from Pearl River Community College. He’s a high school wide receiver that has been converted into a defensive end. He brings a lot of athleticism and we hope that gives us a good speed rush off the edge. We also return Josh Lewis who started for us last season. He’s a senior and comes from a great program in Tuscaloosa County High School. He’s an-other JUCO player and we expect a great year from him as a junior. We think

Junior quarterback Gary Johnston begins his fi rst season at the helm of the Tiger offense. The Gulf Shores, Ala. native replaces three-year starter Deon Williams.

he should be all-conference,” Hall stated.

A pair of converted linebackers will help solidify vacancies at defensive end.

“We have two linebackers that we have also converted into defensive ends in Broderick Cross and Tirelle Cullen. Broderick was a middle linebacker for us last year. We think him putting his hand down will make him a better football player. Tirelle has gained a lot of weight and we think that will help him become a better pass rusher for us in the future. Defensive Coordinator Robert Henry is always looking for bigger linebackers to stick their hands in the dirt and come off the ball. We also have Thomas Brown who has played a lot of football for us over the past two years. He will give us a lot of depth along with Shawn Mason and Dewayne Morgan,” said Hall.

“At defensive tackle we return Justin Hawkins and James Alexander, who both started last season. We expect big years from both of them. We also return LaVanda Powe who will be in our program for the fourth year. Powe is a great student. We also add John Rice who is from East Mississippi Community College after playing one season at Western Michigan. That gives us four se-niors up front at the defensive tackle position. We also have Tremaine Sanders from Demopolis that will add depth.”

The linebacker corp will be in its second season with defensive coordinator Robert Henry. Hall is hoping that another year with his terminology will lead to another step forward for the group.

“At weak-side linebacker, our featured position in this defense, we return Deon Lacey. Deon is a talented guy for us. He’s grown in the weight room and gives us a ton of experience at the position. Antonio Curry will be moving to the position this season after playing at SAM linebacker last season. He’s put in a lot of work in the weight room – moving to around 215 or 220 lbs.

“Gabe Poe – our middle linebacker – was one of the top tacklers last sea-son in the Gulf South Conference as a sophomore. He is a tremendous young man and even better student for our program. Behind him will be Ben Brooks, who played a lot last season and we think the future is bright for him.

“At SAM linebacker, we will have Bryant McGowan. Bryant started every game for us last season and we really think he is one of our better players. We expect big things from him. Behind him will be Jamey Moffett, who has played a lot of football for us over the last couple years.

“We’ve played a lot of young guys as linebackers over the years and we

think we will be able to reap some of those rewards this season. We are now looking at a talented group of juniors across the board,” stated Hall.

“We have some young guys who will give us some depth during through the spring Greg Turner, Jeremy Roberts and Darius Waits, Seneric McCurdy and Keith Oderick. We think those guys will be able to get in the mix and help out some.”

Hall hopes that his secondary, which appears to have the most depth on the defensive side of the ball, will continue its progress from the spring.

“The secondary will have a lot of competition this spring. We return a lot of experience in our secondary with four se-niors that have already played in the Gulf South Conference in Brandon Walker, Lindsey Spinks and Ricky Bell at safety and Stephen Figueroa at cornerback. We return almost every starter from the past two seasons once you add D’Eric Jackson, Shontral Ford and Brandon Tisdale to those four guys,” Hall said.

“We will be mixing in a couple of new guys in with Brandon Lawrence, a junior college transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College, at corner and Otha Foster, another junior college guy from Pearl River (MS) Commu-nity College, at safety along with Rico Jernighan, who we redshirted last season.

“There will be a lot of tremendous competition in the secondary from the guys that are coming back and the new guys that we have brought in. There will be a lot of heated battles between those guys this spring.

“D’Eric Jackson returns at corner. We think he was playing some of the best football in the conference last season. He switched positions from running back to cornerback last spring and started every game at that position as a sophomore. Shontral Ford had a really impressive freshman season. He has a lot of talent and with (Assistant Coach Coy) Campbell coaching him we expect big things from him this season. Brandon Tisdale played a ton of football for us his freshman season and played in every game last year. He gives us a lot of experience at cornerback.

“At safety with those three seniors (Spinks, Bell, Walker) returning and add-ing Foster and Tavarus Finley, we expect a lot of competition this spring.”

Hall thinks his special teams unit has the ability to be one of the best in the country. The Tigers return punter/kicker Brock Sharp along with long snapper Will McBeth and all-conference resturn specialist Wes Mounger.

“On special teams we have three kids returning and two are seniors. Will McBeth is our long snapper. He had a really good year for us last season. He’s worked really hard in the weight room this offseason. He was able to participate the remainder of last season following a knee injury. He subsequently had surgery to fi x the injury and his rehab is going well. We expect big things from him this fall.

Brock Sharp handled everything for us last season in the kicking game. We look to take some of the duties away from him so he can concentrate on punt-ing more. We have another young man in Ryne Smith, who is playing baseball right now. Ryne is a really accurate kicker from close range. He doesn’t have the strongest leg in the world, but he’s really good from close. We think he and Brock will have some nice competition during the spring as the place kicker.

Wes Mounger returns after becoming an All-Gulf South Conference return man. He will play will numerous roles for us this spring at quarterback, wide receiver and in the return game.

We think we have improved in this area and will be one of the better special teams in the country.”

The 2011 season appears to be a bright season for the Tigers and their fi rst-year head coach. UWA fans should enjoy the product on the fi eld as the Tigers look to continue recent success in the always challenging Gulf South Conference.

Senior Gerald Worsham returns at wide receiver for the Tigers. The Birmingham, Ala. native set the program record for receiving yards with 2,180.

2010 West Alabama Season Review

Coming off the fi rst NCAA Division II playoff appearance in 34 years, the University of West Alabama football team looked to continue the success into the 2010 campaign. The Tigers returned a majority of their offense from the previous season, but had roles to fi ll on the defensive side of the ball.

UWA opened the season with a pair of wins away from Tiger Stadium. The fi rst came a 37-7 victory over Shorter University in Demopolis, Ala., a neutral site for the two schools. The Tigers racked up 596 yards of total offense, including 373 through the air. Deon Williams threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns while completing 20 of 28 passses.

The fi rst touchdown of the 2010 season came on the feet of freshman T-Ray Mitchell, who scampered for 37 yards, giving the Red and White an early 7-0 lead. Williams helped push the lead out to 28-0 with his three passing TDs. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., product connected with Randy Lowery (42 yards), Eric McDonald (39 yards) and Gerald Worsham (6 yards). The fi nal UWA score came on a 2 yard pass from Gary Johnston to Blake Pate.

Following the season opening win, the Tigers traveled to Arkansas-Monti-cello seeking its second win of the season. The Red and White got its money’s worth against the Boll Weevils as the Tigers had to hold off a furious rally for UAM to claim the 27-20 win. Worsham caught two TD passes while Mitchell rushed for a pair to garner the Tiger points.

With a 2-0 start to the season, the Red and White looked to contuning its winning ways in its home opener, but the streak would be snapped in a 14-13, turnover riddled loss to Lambuth University. UWA tossed two interceptions and fumbled the ball four times in the setback to the Eagles. Brock Sharp con-nected on fi eld goals from 28 and 37 yards while Mitchell recorded a 13 yard run, giving the Selma, Ala., product a rushing score in each of his fi rst three games.

Following the stumble to LU to open the home slate, the Tigers quickly got back on track with a 28-7 victory over West Georgia. After the Wolves took an early 7-3 lead in the contest, the Red and White rattled off 25 unanswered points to coast to 3-1 on the year. Mitchell put the Tigers up 10-7 with a 1 yard plunge and Deon Lacey capped the scoring with a 50 yard interception return, the defense’s fi rst score of the season.

The Tiger win streak was short lived as UWA fell 41-37 in a scoring show-case at Delta State the following week. The Red and White went blow for blow with the Statesmen, but a late DSU TD pass with seconds remaining lifted the home team to triumph. UWA fi nished with 523 yards while the Green and White racked up 538 yards. L.J. Castile hauled in his team-leading ninth reception to put DSU on top for good. Castile’s ninth catch was his third TD of the game as he fi nished 89 yards, the second most for the Green and White. Randy Lowery hauled in his second TD of the game from 15 yards out to place the Tigers in front with 1:23 remaining in the game. The Red Bay, Ala native fi nished the contest with a team leading eight catches and 85 yards receiving.

UWA snapped a six-game losing streak at Harding with a 22-17 win at First Security Stadium. The conference, road win is the fi rst for UWA since Nov. 7, 2009 -- a 31-28 four, overtime victory at top-ranked North Alabama. UWA totaled 397 yards of total offense in the game while HU recorded 365 total yards. The Tigers total yardage was the fewest on the season for the Red and White. A 15-yard pass from Deon Williams to Gerald Worsham placed UWA back in front 22-17 with 1:13 remaining in the game. The TD hookup was the second time that the duo hooked for a score in the game. Worsham, a native of Birmingham, Ala., hauled in six catches for 99 yards. Williams, a Tuscaloosa, Ala. product, threw for 293 yards on the night while completing 23 of his 37 at-tempts. The road victory didn’t come easy for the Red and White as the Tigers turned back a late Bisons’ charge. HU drove 37 yards in 10 plays, but a Josh Powell pass to Jordan Watson fell incomplete as time expired in the contest.

A last-second touchdown pass to Gerald Worsham capped off an exciting Homecoming affair at Tiger Stadium Saturday night as the Tigers won 40-38 over the visiting Henderson State Reddies. It appeared as if the Tigers would suffer another late defeat as Benny Anderson blocked a Brock Sharp punt and returned it 51 yards into the end zone to put the visitors up 38-34 with just two minutes remaining on the clock. Wes Mounger returned the ensuing kickoff to the 30 yard line to set up the Tigers fi nal thrilling drive as Deon Williams led an inspiring effort as he completed six of nine passes in the game’s fi nal moments. The drive seemed to be stalling after Williams was sacked to bring up a second and 23 from the Tiger 30, but following an incompletion, Williams hooked up

with junior Jake Burks just at the down marker on third down to breathe new life into the drive. Two more passes moved the Red and White deep into HSU territory and following an eight-yard pass to Don Smith, the Reddies called a timeout in an effort to regroup. The attempt almost proved successful as the HSU defense forced Williams out of the pocket, but fortunately the senior was able to pick up enough yardage for the fi rst down to stop the clock. The Tigers hurried back to the line, and Williams spiked the ball with just one second remaining. Williams then found a leaping Worsham in the back part of the end zone, and the Birmingham, Ala. native fell to the turf, securing the ball for the game-clinching score.

The Tigers ran its season-long win streak to three games with a 49-26 victory over Arkansas Tech at Tiger Stadium. In the win, senior quarterback Deon Williams became the school’s all-time leader in total offense with 349 yards in the contest. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native threw for 330 yards and three scores along with 19 yards on the ground. In all, UWA amassed 397 total yards while Tech tallied a season-high 442 yards. It marks just the second time the Tigers have been outgained this season. The Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as UWA struck with a 62 yard pass from Williams to Gerald Worsham on the fi rst play of the game. Worsham, a Birmingham, Ala. product, fi nished the night with a team-leading, fi ve catches for 162 yards to go along with his lone score. The Red and White abruptly ended Tech’s opening drive of the game as Lindsey Spinks hauled in his fi rst interception of the season and returned it 82 yards to the 3 yard line. Williams pushed the ball across the goal line and following the Brock Sharp PAT, the Tigers stood atop 14-0.

A 30-yard, Noe Cuevas fi eld goal in overtime snapped UWA’s three-game win streak as the Tigers fell 30-27 to Southern Arkansas at Wilkins Stadium. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for SAU. UWA took possession of the ball to begin the fi rst overtime, but following a short drive, Brock Sharp’s 39 yard fi eld goal was pushed wide left. With two-seconds remaining in regula-tion, the Tigers lined up for a 27 yard fi eld goal attempt, but the snap was mis-handled and game-winning attempt fell by the wayside. The Tigers totaled 498 yards of total offense in the setback. The Muleriders totaled 291 yards while posting a season-high 27 points in their homecoming victory. UWA quarterback Deon Williams fi nished the night with 222 yards through the air along with two touchdowns and an interception. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native also rushed for 68 yards in the outing. T-Ray Mitchell rushed for over 100 yards for the fourth time this season as the Selma, Ala. native totaled a career-high 143 yards.

A furious, fourth quarter rally handed the West Alabama football team a 24-23 loss at No. 18 North Alabama on Saturday evening. The Lions scored 21-unanswered points to drop UWA. Deon Williams became the program’s all-time leading passer in the setback. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native threw for 232 yards and currently has 6,793 career passing yards. Gerald Worsham moved up the ranks in receptions with 163 career catches - second all-time. The Birmingham, Ala. product hauled in eight passes for 72 yards on the night. The Tigers fi nished with 330 yards of total offense while the Lions totaled 553 yards in the outing.

Prior to the 2010 fi nale, head coach and Division II Hall of Famer Bobby Wallace announced his retirement thus closing a fi ve-year span with the Tiger program. The Tigers responded the only way they could with a 24-21 victory to stun No. 7 Valdosta State. With the win on Senior Night at Tiger Stadium, UWA closed out the regular season campaign at 7-4. The win marked just the sec-ond time in program history that West Alabama had defeated VSU and snaps a 24-game losing streak to the Blazers. Among the seniors closing out their time in Livingston, Randy Lowery led the Tigers as he pulled in four catches for 118 yards including a touchdown catch from fellow senior Deon Williams that pulled the Tigers within two in the third quarter. On the following kickoff, he returned a fumble to setup a UWA go-ahead fi eld goal.

West Alabama placed six members on the All-Gulf South Conference Team – headlined by unanimous selection Gerald Worsham. Jared Porter and Wes Mounger joined Worsham on the fi rst team with Deon Williams, Randy Lowery and Justin Moore being named to the second team. Porter, Worsham, and Willams each received Don Hansen All-Super Region Two Team accolades with Worsham being named to the 2010 Daktronics All-Super Region Two First Team.
