let me offer my warmest congratulations to the United nations Foundation on tonight’s Global leadership dinner. When it comes to supporting the work of the United nations, we have few better friends than this Foundation and the United nations association of the Usa.

For many years, this dinner has brought together policymakers, diplomats, Un supporters, business leaders and celebrities. You help us call attention to the vital role the United nations plays in advancing peace, prosperity, and justice. and we call on all of you to lend us your best efforts and full engagement—as you always do!

From my travels this year to different parts of the U.s., i have seen firsthand how local organizations are critical to our efforts. in baltimore at the Conference of Mayors, i learned about the challenge of making the world’s cities healthier and cleaner; in denver i discussed sustainable energy for all and learned from local renewable and clean energy companies how to combat climate change; and in los angeles i learned from filmmakers and directors how to better tell the story of the lifesaving work the Un does around the world—from feeding over 100 million people in over 70 countries to wiping out diseases such as smallpox and polio to caring for more than 30 million refugees in the horn of africa and elsewhere, to providing over 110,000 peacekeepers in places where others cannot or will not go. all of this important work is what the Un can do with the help of the United nations Foundation and the United nations association of the Usa.

This evening, i am pleased to join in honoring prime Minister of norway Jens stoltenberg; United nations Under-secretary-General for the department of Field support susana Malcorra; rex Tillerson, Chairman and Ceo of exxonMobil; rock band linkin park; and asma Jahangir, president of the supreme Court bar association, for their outstanding leadership in furthering the purposes of the United nations Charter and advancing Un causes.

again, my heartfelt congratulations to you all. i know that the Un Foundation and Una-Usa will keep up the good work and help us to build a stronger United nations for a better world.

This dinner has always been important to me as an avid supporter of the United nations. it was here that i announced my commitment to the work of the United nations, which took shape in 1998 with the formation of the Un Foundation. i am proud of what the Foundation has been able to accomplish in 13 years. nothing makes me more proud than our work to rally thousands of supporters to help the United nations create a healthier, safer and happier world.

a year ago, the United nations association of the United states of america and the Un Foundation launched a strategic alliance designed to enhance the work of both organizations. Celebrating the alliance at this dinner last year brought the Un Foundation story full circle, but more importantly established a new era in our mission to help the Un take on global challenges.

With all that we have accomplished, the most exciting part is that we are only at the beginning of this journey. We still have much to accomplish, and together—with supporters like you—we will continue to connect people, ideas, and resources to the Un to help create 21st-century solutions to today’s problems. Thank you for being part of what we will accomplish together.

at this event last november, the Un association of the United states of america (Una-Usa) and the Un Foundation celebrated the beginning of our strategic alliance and partnership. This collaboration has already helped bring the historic impact of Una-Usa to new levels of success.

over the course of the past year Una-Usa has grown and found strategic ways to support the Un in new places—and in new ways—all over the U.s. Groups of citizens have formed new chapters in California, Florida, indiana, louisiana, and new Jersey. in partnership with the better World Campaign, Una-Usa bolstered its advocacy capacity, while members across the United states participated in record numbers of advocacy efforts on behalf of the Un including meetings on Capitol hill, letter writing campaigns, and district meetings with members of Congress. Global Classrooms, our flagship education program, saw record-breaking attendance at Model Un conferences in the U.s. and around the globe.

The new energy within the Una-Usa network reflects the opinions of a majority of citizens across the country—that the Un is a vital institution to the U.s. rick reilly has been voted national sportswriter of the Year 11 times. since 2007, rick has been a front-page columnist for espn.com and is featured on several espn shows, including his interview show, Homecoming with Rick Reilly, and Monday night Football.

he won the 2009 damon runyon award for out standing Contributions to Journalism, an honor

previously won by Jimmy breslin, Tim russert, bob Costas, Mike royko, George Will, Ted Turner and Tom brokaw, among others. Three times his columns have been read into the record in the U.s. Congress.

reilly is the author of 10 books, including his latest—Sports From Hell, My Search for the World’s Dumbest Competition (doubleday)—an account of his three-year search for the dumbest sport in the world. he has written about everything from ice skater Katarina Witt behind the iron Curtain to actor Jack nicholson in the front row, from wrestling priests in Mexico City to mushers at the iditarod, from playing golf with president Clinton to playing golf with o.J. simpson. The New York Daily News called him “one of the funniest humans on the planet.” publishers Weekly called him, “an indescribable amalgam of dave barry, Jim Murray, and lewis Grizzard, with the timing of Jay leno and the wit of Johnny Carson.”

he has won numerous awards in his 30-year writing career, including the prestigious new York newspaper Guild’s page one award for best Magazine story. reilly began his career in 1979 at his hometown Boulder (CO) Daily Camera while a sophomore at the University of Colorado, from which he graduated in 1981. he also wrote for the denver post and Los Angeles Times, before moving to Sports Illustrated in 1985.

reilly is a Champion for the Un Foundation’s anti-malaria campaign Nothing But Nets, which to date has raised more than $35 million to distribute more than four million live-saving bed nets to children and families throughout africa. in fact, it was reilly’s 2006 column about malaria in Sports Illustrated—in which he challenged each of his readers to donate at least $10 to the Un Foundation’s anti-malaria work—that led to the creation of Nothing But Nets.

Jens stoltenberg is recognized as Champion for Global Change in recognition of norway’s exemplary support of the United nations and its causes and his strong personal leadership in world affairs and on international cooperation.

Jens stoltenberg was born in oslo on 16 March 1959. he spent his childhood years in belgrade, Yugoslavia, and oslo, with his diplomat father, mother and two sisters.

raised in a politically active family, with a father who went on to become Foreign Minister and a mother who held several high public offices, Jens stoltenberg’s social and political interests were awakened early.

While in high school Jens stoltenberg joined the labour Youth movement. his first international involvement was alongside groups struggling for democratisation in latin america. he was also a board member of the norwegian Council for southern africa. Jens stoltenberg has been vice president of the international Union of socialist Youth and has had extensive contact with political movements all over the world.

he was called by prime Minister Gro harlem brundtland to serve as Under-secretary for the environment in 1990, in which post he worked on developing cost-effective international environmental agreements. in 1993 he was elected Member of parliament for oslo, and was also appointed Minister of Trade and energy in the brundtland Government. he served as Minister of Finance from 1996 to 1997, when the labour party lost the election, and he then returned to parliament.

Jens stoltenberg was appointed prime Minister for the first time at the age of 40 in 2000. he stepped down following the election the year after. he was leader of the opposition until 2005, when he again became prime Minister after the election that year, which brought in a coalition government. his coalition won the next election in 2009 and held on to the majority in parliament.

While in opposition, Jens stoltenberg travelled extensively in africa and asia. There he witnessed the challenges facing the world’s most vulnerable children. he made a pledge to focus on the need for vaccines for these children. he gained thorough knowledge of all aspects of vaccination. For the last ten years he has been a driving force in mobilising political support and funds for the vaccine alliance GaVi.

studying the situation of children in need, Jens stoltenberg became aware of the close link between the health of a mother and that of her child. When he became prime Minister for the second time in 2005, he broadened his vaccine commitment to include the fight against maternal and child mortality – Un Millennium development Goals 4 and 5. he has said that as a father he recognizes the importance of saving children’s lives, as an economist he understands the means of achieving this and as a politician he has the opportunity to initiate action that will save millions of lives of children and their mothers.

Jens stoltenberg has also had a number of international assignments. in 2005 he was asked by the Un secretary-General to co-chair the high-level panel on system Wide Coherence. The high-level panel presented its report, UN – Delivering as One, to the secretary-General in 2006. The recommendations of the panel have formed the basis for a number of reforms to coordinate and streamline the activities of the organization.

in 2010 Jens stoltenberg became co-chair of the Un secretary-General’s high-level advisory Group on Climate Change Financing, together with the ethiopian prime Minister, Meles Zenawi. The task was to make recommendations on how to mobilise $100 billion per year for climate financing in developing countries by 2020. The advisory Group concluded that this was feasible and outlined a number of possible sources of financing to achieve this goal. The recommendations of the advisory Group are now being followed up in relevant international forums.

The motivation behind Jens stoltenberg’s considerable efforts in reducing climate change is to give young people of today the hope of a better future. he is convinced that global climate change is a serious threat to social and economic development – and not least to the prospects of improving health conditions worldwide.

Jens stoltenberg graduated with a degree in economics in 1987 from the University of oslo and went to work at statistics norway. he is married to ingrid schulerud, a diplomat. They have two grown children.

SuSana malcorraUnder-secretary-General for the department of

Field support, United nations

in May 2008, United nations secretary-General ban Ki-moon appointed susana Malcorra as the first Under-secretary-General of the United nation’s newest department, the department of Field support (dFs). This department is responsible for delivering dedicated support to United nations field operations, including on personnel, finance, procurement, logistical, communications, information technology and other administrative and general management issues.

Ms. Malcorra directs support for United nations peace missions worldwide. as the head of the dFs, she is responsible for

providing support to 32 peacekeeping and special political missions in some of the most remote and austere areas of the world.

in the context of peacekeeping and peace building, the overall support challenge Ms. Malcorra is responsible for effectively determining how to deploy and sustain more than 120,000 civilian, military and police personnel in some of the most dangerous areas in the world; to calibrate highly complex logistical requirements from start-up to liquidation of missions; to build infrastructure (from living and working facilities to telecommunications and information technology), and to administer a global budget, for peacekeeping and special political missions, of more than Us $7.5 billion annually.

Under her leadership, dFs has embarked in a five-year transformation programme to enable improved service to Un field missions. already in its second year of implementation, her vision for a new service delivery model has shown results in improved and faster services to the missions, but also in achieving significant savings for Member states. This programme introduced safer working environments for civilians by reducing mission footprints, and increased the use of local staff and goods to promote host country and regional development efforts. additionally, this new service delivery model is projected to lead to savings totalling approximately $124 million during 2011/12 through greater economies of scale and improved distribution and usage of available assets.

prior to her appointment as the head of the department of Field support, Ms. Malcorra served as Chief operating officer and deputy executive director of the World Food programme (WFp), overseeing daily emergency and humanitarian operations in more than 80 countries, with over 10,000 personnel. during her tenure at WFp she led the initial phase of the operational response to the tsunami emergency in december 2004 and managed human resources, budget, finance, information, technology, telecommunications, administration and security. before joining WFp in 2004, she had accrued 25 years’ experience in the private sector, including leadership roles at ibM and Telecom argentina.

Ms. Malcorra was born in 1954 and graduated as engineer in electronics from the University of rosario in argentina. she is married and has a son.

rex TillerSonChairman and Chief executive officer, exxonMobil

rex Tillerson is being recognized for exxonMobil’s exemplary leadership in the fight against malaria. The company supports the work of the United nations to combat malaria around the world and has been a partner of Nothing But Nets for five years.

a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, rex Tillerson earned a bachelor of science in Civil engineering at the University of Texas at austin before joining exxon

Company, U.s.a. in 1975 as a production engineer.

in 1989, he became General Manager of eUsa’s Central production division, responsible for oil and gas production operations throughout a large portion of Texas, oklahoma, arkansas and Kansas. in 1992, Mr. Tillerson was named production advisor to exxon Corporation. Three years later he was named president of exxon Yemen inc. and esso exploration and production Khorat inc., and in January 1998 became Vice president of exxon Ventures (Cis) inc. and president of exxon neftegas limited. in those roles, he was responsible for exxon’s holdings in russia and the Caspian sea as well as the sakhalin i Consortium operations offshore sakhalin island, russia.

in december 1999, he became executive Vice president of exxonMobil development Company. Mr. Tillerson was named senior Vice president of exxon Mobil Corporation in august 2001, and was elected president of the Corporation and member of the board of directors on March 1, 2004. he assumed his current position January 1, 2006.

asma Jahangir is honored for her dedication to preventing the persecution of religious minorities and women, and exploitation of children, as well as the accomplishments of many United nations human rights special rapporteurs.

asma Jahangir is currently the president of the supreme Court bar association of pakistan and has been twice elected as Chairperson of the human rights

Commission of pakistan. she is also a director of the aGhs legal aid Cell, which provides free legal assistance to the needy. Mrs. Jahangir was instrumental in the formation of the punjab Women lawyers association in 1980 and the Women action Forum in 1985. she was placed under house arrest and later imprisoned for participating in the movement to restore political and fundamental rights under the military regime in 1983.

Mrs. Jahangir has authored two books and five papers. she has received honorary doctor of law degrees from the University of st. Gallen, switzerland, Queen’s University, Canada, and amherst College, Usa. she has been the recipient of a number of international and national awards, among them the ramon Magsaysay award and the Four Freedoms award.

in 1998, Mrs. Jahangir was appointed United nations special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary execution of the Commission on human rights and in 2004 she was appointed United nation special rapporteur on Freedom of religion or belief of the Council of human rights.

Mrs. Jahangir served as a leading figure in the campaign waged by women activists against the promulgation of the controversial hadood ordinances and draft law on evidence, defended cases of discrimination against religious minorities, women and children, and represented clients who were denied their fundamental rights. notable amongst them is one of the first precedent-setting public interest litigation case in pakistan where she fought for brick kiln workers, resulting in legislation being passed in parliament for ending bonded labour.

linkin park is recognized tonight for using the band’s voice to highlight the importance of the United nations and for mobilizing fans to help those in need.

The Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum, alternative rock band linkin park has used its connections to millions of fans, fellow musicians, and the music industry to form creative opportunities to support humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and environmental work around the world.

band members—lead vocalist Chester bennington; drummer/percussionist rob bourdon; guitarist brad delson; bassist dave ‘phoenix’ Farrell; dJ, programmer Joe hahn; and lead vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist Mike shinoda—formed a non-profit organization, Music For relief, dedicated to providing aid to victims of natural disasters and the prevention of such disasters. since its inception in 2005, Music for relief has raised over $5 million for victims of multiple disasters across four continents including the 2004 indian ocean tsunami, hurricane Katrina, China’s Wenchuan earthquake, a cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe, the 2010 haiti earthquake and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Music For relief has worked with the Un Foundation to ensure funds raised for haiti have supported Un programs there.

Following the haiti earthquake, linkin park used Un video footage of recovery efforts there, which had been viewed by 6,000 people, to create a new video for its song “not alone.” To date, the video has been viewed by more than 9 million people on YouTube. a year later, band members took part in a Facebook Town hall with the secretary-General, the Un Foundation, and the U.s. department of state to discuss the recovery and development work that had been done in the year following the disaster. in the spring of 2011, with Music for relief, dave “phoenix” Farrell visited haiti to see the Un’s work firsthand and share his experience with linkin park fans and Music for relief supporters.

Una-Usa builds understanding of, and support for, the Un through its network of more than 100 Chapters and Divisions, grassroots volunteer membership across the country, and programs that combine public outreach, advocacy, and education to raise awareness of the Un agenda.

Two key moments of national engagement are the annual Meeting, which brings together Una-Usa leaders for a variety of trainings, briefings, networking, and capacity-building, and Members’ Day at the UN, which provides participants a unique opportunity to attend exclusive briefings on pressing issues at Un headquarters.

Chapters and Divisions, with support from Una-Usa and its sister organization, the better World Campaign, connect with elected leaders—in district offices and in Washington, dC—to discuss issues such as U.s. funding to the Un, the Un Millennium development Goals, protection of human rights, and ratification of international treaties. in connection with the annual Meeting, Una-Usa hosts the most important advocacy event of the year—Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. in 2011, Una-Usa members held nearly 100 hill meetings on advocacy day.

Global Classrooms is the cornerstone of Una-Usa’s educational program. For more than 10 years, Global Classrooms® has helped middle and high school students in underserved schools and communities become global citizens. annually, Global

Classrooms engages nearly 25,000 students and teachers at Model UN conferences and in classrooms in 23 cities across 15 countries.

UNA Young Professionals is a network of Una-Usa members between the ages of 21 and 40 who meet to discuss international cooperation, the Un, and international career opportunities. The UNA-USA Student

Alliance reaches out to an even younger audience by mobilizing american high-school and college students to emphasize the principles of the Un.

Through The Leo Nevas Program on Human Rights, Una-Usa advocates and educates for human rights as an essential component of U.s. foreign policy. The leo nevas Task Force—named after a longtime Una-Usa leader with a well-known lifelong commitment to the work of the United nations and the promotion of human rights—works through public communications and discussions; meetings with Members of Congress, the Un and other public officials; issuing white papers; and

recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and commitment to the promotion of human rights.

in addition to connecting individuals and communities to the Un, Una-Usa links more than 90 nongovernmental organizations (nGos) with each other—via the Council of Organizations—to promote public awareness of global issues and the Un’s role in world affairs.

as a result of the partnership with the Un Foundation, Una-Usa has grown the number of Chapters and divisions, increased advocacy capacity, supported growth in grassroots advocacy, increased attendance at Global Classrooms Model Un conferences, and bolstered new media outreach.

Leo Nevas Human Rights Youth AwardKaren Woodin-rodriguez

Karen Woodin-Rodríguez has been an active participant of UNA Global Classrooms since 2007, having served on various occasions as a Senior Secretariat Member, a Dais member, and a Model UN trainer. She has also led several Model UN conferences at Columbia University, including her role as Secretary-General of Columbia’s collegiate conference.

Karen has worked to promote human rights in the Americas. In the spring of 2010, working for the Human Rights Foundation, she authored a report on political prosecution in Venezuela and aided in the planning of the Oslo Freedom Forum, an annual global gathering of human rights activists. From May 2010 to May 2011, she headed IvyQ 2011, the annual inter-Ivy League LGBTQ Conference that aims to create a strong pan-Ivy LGBTQ community to carry forward the fight for equal rights.
