All Rights Reserved. Traffic lanes dedicated to the Pan American Games will be a "key component" in helping to ease athletes and participants through Toronto's gridlock, according to organizers, who are not yet prepared to say where those lanes will be needed most when the city hosts the Games in the summer of 2015. The quadrennial athletics showcase is expected to draw thousands of athletes and tourists to Ontario in four years, where events will be spread across the Golden Horseshoe, from Welland to Oshawa. Transportation is an obvious concern. "The dedicated lanes do become an important part of our ability to move our constituents and our spectators around the footprint of the games," Toronto organizing committee senior vicepresident Allen Vansen said in a conference call with reporters Friday. The committee sent 25 representatives to Mexico to observe the Pan American Games in Guadalajara in October and for the Parapan American Games last month. The committee there had tried and failed to implement dedicated traffic lanes. "We learned that there was no previous legislation that officially sanctioned these lanes, nor were they patrolled on a regular basis," Mr. Vansen said. "This is an important issue for us and our team as we plan our own strategy for 2015." Mr. Vansen said the Toronto 2015 group has a socalled "Pan Am Transportation Team," with representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Metrolinx, as well as from the various municipalities set to host events in four years. "Obviously, we don't have a crystal ball, we can't really see ahead in terms of what traffic will be," he said.
