Dear Friends,On Sunday, March 20, 2011, the Holy Union Sistersjoined together with associates, family, friends, clergy, and colleagues at theBasilica of the Assumption in Balti-more for the first of six regional Massesof Thanksgiving to celebrate 125 years offaithful presence in the United States. On Sunday afternoon, October 16, 2011,Bishop Coleman will celebrate the finalliturgy of our anniversary year at SacredHeart Church, our founding mission.

There have been so many committees toplan, coordinate and see to each detail of thesecelebrations. In this ongoing process, it became clearer tous that this was truly a special moment in Holy Union his-tory. The question often asked was, “Would there be a giftthe United States Province could offer to the whole Con-gregation through this year of celebration?” The answerseemed to be captured in the first line of Marty Haugen’shymn’ We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe.

What are we remembering at this moment in our history?Yes, it is that special event when ten Holy Union Sisters ledby Mother Helena Daumerie came to Sacred Heart ParishSchool to teach American immigrant children. Throughoutthe years, so many memorable events have taken place ineach of the places where we have ministered. But at the end

There has been heightened interest and excitement over the past two years as so many of us havebeen meeting to plan the 125th Celebration. For me, it has been a blessing. I am amazed at thelove and dedication I've encountered in the various areas of the Province. Both the Sisters and thelay volunteers have such enthusiasm! The Holy Union Sisters are indeed well loved and appreci-ated. It is a privilege to be part of this moment of grace. – Rachel (Michaud) Voiland,Coordinating Committee - EVENTS COORDINATOR

As we gathered in the Convent with the Sisters, old and new friends, everyone was happy to be part of the 125th AnniversaryCelebration of the Holy Union Sisters. Many in the room had been taught by the Sisters and many work closely with themin parish activities. As in all committees achieving a consensus is an accomplishment in itself, but the many ideas that werebrought forth were consolidated into an event that will exemplify the Holy Union Sisters commitment to God and His peopleand will reflect their spirit. – Marilyn Crum (right)-Elaine Korva (left), CO-CHAIRS NY COMMITTEE

When asked her motivation for planning the regional celebration in Pawtucket, Carol Aliskeviczreplied, "The Holy Union Sisters are family to me. What I am doing for them now is nothing compared with what they have done for me."– Carole Aliskevicz, CHAIR OF THE RHODE ISLAND

CELEBRATION

of this year of celebration, we will alsoremember with joy and gratitude howthe laity has been with us at every stepof this year’s journey. How strengthen-ing it is for us to know that over 150colleagues spent hours volunteeringtheir time and talent to make our anniversary events a reality.

What are we celebrating at this moment in our history? We celebrate

that over these 125 years, Holy Union Sistersstaffed 55 schools in the United States and, through edu-cation, sisters have made a positive impact in the lives ofparents, children and society itself. But at this moment, wealso celebrate that Holy Union Sisters responded to thechallenge of serving God’s People through many differentministries to meet the needs of our broken fractured worldtoday.

What do we believe at this moment of our history? We believe, that the presence of Holy Union in the UnitedStates will continue into the future, and that through oursisters, colleagues, and associates, we will be witnessesof God’s inclusive love and instruments of unity in ourworld.

The sisters provided the foundation for our lives, intellectually, morally and spiritually. They arewonderful Christian role models. I was happy to help with the Maryland celebration.– MarkKellerman, BALTIMORE, MD. COMMITTEE MEMBER

Gratefully,

Twenty-four years ago, Sr. Jean JosephDekock, SUSC, said "yes" to Superior GeneralSister Margaret Barry's request to come toHaiti and replace the Sisters of St. Joseph ofCluny in a small Catholic School in St.Michel d'Attalaye, a village nestled in themountains of northwest Haiti.

Ten years ago, Sr. Eileen Davey, SUSC, responded to theinvitation of Fr. Nicholas Gerard, SMM, the pastor of St.Louis de Montfort Parish in Port-au-Prince, to establish aNutrition Center for the young children of the parish. Thecenter began in a small alley with thirty children. Today ithas two small classrooms and enrolls seventy-five children.

Statistically, one of the poorest countries in the NorthernHemisphere, Haiti is called "home" by an international groupof Holy Union Sisters. They come from the Region ofCameroon, the provinces of Anglo-Hibernia-Tanzania,Franco-Belge and United States. Holy Union Sisters ministerin a parish in St. Michel, the first Holy Union foundation, - aswell as in Port-au-Prince, the capital, and St. Marc, a villageabout three hours north of Port au Prince.

Last January Haiti was devastated by a massive earthquakefollowed by a cholera epidemic and a hurricane. The de-struction and ravages of these disasters remain over a yearlater. Port-au-Prince is filled with damaged or destroyedbuildings and piles of rubble. Rebuilding is slow. In spaceformerly occupied by public parks, huge tent cities havesprung up. Tents line city streets aswell. Temporary plywood homes areclustered just outside the city.Schools are extremely overcrowdedbecause they are trying to accommo-date students from destroyedschools.

Despite this devastation, hope andjoy abound in Haiti. The peopleare resilient and their strong faithenables them to carry on despitethe recent calamities. People sellall sorts of items on the streets in order to make alittle money. Markets are open. Businesses carry on. Wor-shippers fill the churches. On April 3, 2011, a nursing schoolin Port-au-Prince celebrated its first graduation since theearthquake. This school which was completely destroyed

had 24 students killed in the quake. Thosewho had died were remembered; thosewho survived were celebrated.

In St. Louis de Montfort Parish, through the generosity of manydonors and the Holy UnionSisters, small houses havebeen built for people whoown their land. Others havebeen helped to start upsmall businesses again andgain some independence.Fr. Nicholas, pastor of St.Louis Parish wanted toprovide a place where

small children could come eachweekday and receive a nourishing meal. He

wanted to give these children a "fighting chance" againstthe diseases that are so prevalent in Haiti. A healthy hotmeal is still the cornerstone, the priority, of the program.Sr. Eileen, whose training is in early-childhood education, insists that the center include learning and age-appropri-ate developmental activities. Children, ages 2-5, spend timeengaged in socialization, motor skill development, andbasic academic skills. Along with Sr. Maria Hawkes andHaitian teachers and staff, Sr. Eileen offers an excellent startto life for these children. Sr. Maria is also active in one ofthe parish choirs and the Legion of Mary. Sr. Helen Ryderis the third member of the Port au Prince community. Sheteaches English to secondary

school students, toadults, and to prison-ers. Sr. Helen alsocoordinates faithformation programsin St. Louis deMontfort Parish. InSt. Marc, Sr. MaryHardiman minis-ters at the localprison and visits

the homebound inthe area. Last year Sr. Elizabeth Kun-

sah came to St.Michel from Cameroon. This yearshe serves as the administrator of the girls' schoolthat includes pre-school thru grade 9. Sr. "Jean Jo",who has made the school into a strong educationalestablishment, continues to teach and assists in

many ways. Sr. Therese Apolline Wyckaert also helps in theschool and in the parish.

SSrr.. RRuutthh BBeeaauuddooiinn,, SSUUSSCC describes her voca-

tion to Holy Union as “a call made to her heart.” Shehas continued to respond to that call for almost 65years. Throughout her religious life, Sr. Ruth has responded to this call in ways she could not haveimagined. Like most Holy Union Sisters she was ateacher, in both elementary and secondary schoolsin Cambridge, Concord and Lawrence.

In 1982, she responded to a request to be part ofan international group who were revising theHoly Union Constitutions. In 1993, she returnedto Rome to serve as administrator of the Holy UnionGeneralate. Most recently, she has ministered to the retiredsisters in Lowell and at Mary Immaculate Residence inLawrence, answering the same call.

Sr. Ruth’s love for her international congregation is evidentwhen she recalls her time in Rome and the opportunitiesshe has had to visit other places where Holy Union Sisterslive. She has come to know sisters of different cultures who

make up the Holy Union family. She believes her experiencesenabled her to minister with a vision of the world, which

transcends the borders of her own country. Herfacility with languages

also enabled herto serve as a trans-lator at interna-tional meetings.

At Mary ImmaculateResidence, Sr. Ruthencourages the otherHoly Union Sistersliving there to be in-volved and active. Shesupports their interestand encourages themto assist other resi-

dents. She believes that this new model for retirement isworking very well. The enthusiasm of the sisters with whomshe shares community gives her life and keeps her feelingyoung. The consistent ability to respond to what is asked ofher and adapt to this “call of the heart” continues to be atthe root of Sr. Ruth’s vocation as a Holy Union Sister.

SSrr.. MMaarryy ZZaavvaacckkyy,, SSUUSSCC has taught primary

grades for most of her religious life. Recently she served asa substitute teacher at Sacred Heart School in her nativeLewiston, PA. There she met two Chinese children whoseparents owned a restaurant in the town. Their mother, Amywas enrolled in a local English language program butbudget cuts caused the program to close. Parishioners sug-gested that Amy contact Sr. Mary to teach her English. When she did, Sr. Mary was very hesitant because she hadnever worked with adults. Before sheagreed, Sr. Marycontacted Sr. AnnBoland, SUSC, anexperienced ESOLteacher in Brock-ton, MA. Sr. Ann en-couraged her andsent her materials touse with Amy.

Because she wantedher children to retaintheir Chinese languageand culture, Amy only

spoke Chinese at home. Her husband's sudden deathforced her to find a job outside the home and learningEnglish became even more critical.

Amy now meets twice a week with Sr. Mary. These sessionshave benefited not just Amy. Sr. Mary describes her student as a "walking encyclopedia" from whom she haslearned so much about China.

Presently Amy works the 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift in a homeimprovement store. She hopes to move to work whereshe can better use her skills. She credits Sr. Mary withgiving her the knowledge and confidence to do this.

In addition to tutoring, Sr. Mary brings the Eucharistto the homebound parishioners in nursing homesand hospitals. The parish sponsors a Senior Appreci-ation event in June. Sr. Mary is still involved in theplanning of this event, arranging rides for those whowill attend. Tutoring Amy enables her to share herteaching gifts and she is also able to reach out tothe many seniors in her area, an arrangement whichsuits her just fine.

SSrr.. AAlliiccee DDeessrroossiieerrss,, SSUUSSCC The saying “A picture isworth a thousand words” aptly describes Sr. AliceDesrosiers' room at Marian Manor in Taunton, MA. The pho-tos displayed around the room are a visual story of Sr.Alice's life as a Holy Union Sister. Her love of her family, fourteen children in all, extended into her life in Holy Unionas teacher, mentor, pastoral minister, librarian, and nowcaretaker of the caregivers.

The photos include Sr. Alice with a group of Holy Union Sisters celebrating their 50th anniversary. She taught all ofthese sisters in first grade many years ago. Another photois of Taunton Holy Union Sisters and associates celebrat-ing Sr. Alice’s 90th birthday. Other photos include Sr. Alice’s sister Doris, also a Holy Union Sister, and the children of her caregivers.

A sister of ninety plus years certainly has many stories totell. At one time, Sr. Alice was a Eucharistic minister atTaunton State Hospital. She noticed a man whom everyonedescribed as impossible to approach. Sr. Alice explained tohim that she was bringing Holy Communion to all the

patients. At first, he did not seem to understand but gradually he began to understand why she was there. Even-tually he asked if he could receive the Eucharist. Her determination and patience enabled this hesitant man tospeak not only to her but to engage with the staff and other patients as well.

Sr. Alice notes that throughout her life, "there was no wast-ing time.” There was always some-

thing to do or some place to be.Today at Marian Manor, she is

a prayerful presence to thesick and those who have nofamilies. By her long life,Sr. Alice teaches many lessons. Perhaps the mostimportant are to maintaindelight, interest and con-

cern for others.

SSrr.. PPaattrriicciiaa DDeeaassyy,, SSUUSSCC describes the students sheencounters each day at Cathedral High School as a "sourceof inspiration". Many are the daughters of immigrants whohave come to this country to make a better life for their families and "who value a Catholic education." Sr. Patricianotes, "Many of the young women who attend Cathedral arethe first in their families to graduate from high school".

After several years as a social worker with Catholic Charities,Sr. Patricia came to the guidance department at CathedralHigh School in New YorkCity fourteen years ago,She sees this back-ground "as a valuableresource" at Cathedralwhere she does aca-demic guidance forfreshmen and sopho-mores, and serves asa social worker forstudents in all fouryears. In this capac-ity, she evaluatesand counsels students who

come to her with personal and family issues. Her first-handknowledge of the many service agencies in the city enablesher to provide useful resources for students and their fami-lies.

Sister Patricia makes her students aware of the benefits ofliving in New York City. She encourages them to visit museums and attend programs for high school students atuniversities, such as Cornell Medical College. By volun-teering as tutors and in hospitals, students can test outpossible career options.

For the past twelve years, Sr. Pat has coordinated the Stu-dent-Sponsor Partnership. In addition to financialsupport, it provides students with one-on-one mentor-ship and academic support. Sr. Pat has served as bothliaison between the Student Sponsors Partners andthe school and in-school mentor to students in theprogram. She ensures that students fulfill the school'srequirements. Although retiring as coordinator thisyear, she will continue to maintain an interest in thestudent participants. She cherishes the dedication writ-ten by one student in her yearbook, "I would like tothank my sponsor and Sister Pat for always believing inme."

Heritage HouseAfter much planning, day to day creating of displays and artifact presen-tations, and refurbishing of the Heritage House itself, the dream is aboutto become a reality. It is a legacy to Mother Helena and all the Holy UnionSisters who have carried on her mission. The place captures the wonder-ful historical contributions of Holy Union Sisters and Associates in thelives of many people through education and later through many and varied ministries in the United States and throughoutthe world.

This legacy is being made possible by the Heritage House Team comprised of Sr. Rita Beaudoin, archivist, and Srs.Jean Carpinelli and Patricia Mulryan, her creative assistants. These three sisters with the help of Sr. Gertrude Pare and other Holy Union Sistersand with the support of the Holy Union Mission Team have given birthand life to a dream. As we look forward to the opening of the HeritageHouse in the near future, we can expect to travel through this Holy Unionlegacy in rooms named after the following: Abbé Jean Baptiste Debra-bant, Mother Marie Helena, and Provincials: Mother Marie Suzanne,Mother Marie Regis (Sr. Pauline LaRoche), Mother Alfred Therese, MotherAnna Theresa and Mother Joseph Teresa.

The creative skills of the Sisters both in music and art will play a part in establishing the ambience of the rooms as people enjoy their visit. In addi-tion, a reading room will enable visitors to look at yearbooks and accesscomputerized presentations of Holy Union history. Some original workswill adorn the walls such as Sr. Rose Lamb’s timeline from 1886-1996; theoriginal tabernacle door from an early foundation of Holy Union in Douai,France, which has graced the altar of the original foundation on ProspectSt., Fall River, MA; the logo of Abbé Debrabant’s words “Go to America.”A map showing the historical and current presence of Holy Union Sisterswill also be a part of the décor as well as many other displays.

As you can judge from this short description, there will be much to seeand enjoy. Sr. Rita plans to share this legacy with the students of the Coun-try Day School of the Holy Union in Groton. The Heritage House team is already planning how other groups can use this treasured space.

You will be kept apprised regarding the opening date and visiting sched-ule on wwwwww..hhoollyyuunniioonnssiisstteerrss..oorrgg

Material resources are few in Haiti. Manyfamilies can afford only one simple meal aday. Books are not available for the schools. The country is rich in natural beauty – theCaribbean Sea, the mountains, rivers andstreams high in the hills, the people. EachHoly Union Sister who ministers in Haitiwill tell you that the greatest resource, thegreatest gift that Haiti has is its people.Though poor, they live their lives in a spiritof faith, joy and hospitality. For them - whatis, is. They do not complain; they accept andlive. They mourn their losses; they pray;they celebrate! Life is a journey and anadventure! Sr. Barbara's grantfrom the MotherHelena Fund thisyear will providetextbooks for theadults who arelearning English. There has been asignificant increasein the cost of theseimportant learningmaterials and thishas put a strain onthe program budget.

Vocation Ministry By Sr. Marilyn Gignac, SUSC

Snow may have covered the crocuses and daffodils, but theyhave popped up, and brought signs of new life. God hasplanned it that way. I also believe God has planned thatthere always be religious women and men in the Church. There are signs of hope for this.

In November 2010, Srs. Helen Meehan, Alice ArsenaultNancy Stiles, Jane Newcomb and I participated in theNRVC Convocation. We came away from Cleveland with renewed enthusiasm for the work we are doing.

It is obvious that we have to make ourselves more visible, going where the young people are. For that reason, Janeand I attended one of the four FOCUS Conferences of Janu-ary 2011. In Baltimore, we were amazed at 1300 universitystudents - their faith, their sincerity in seeking to know God’swill and their enthusiasm for doing it.

A school in Nashua, NH, has what they call Adopt-a-Religious Program. We have gone once a month to speakwith 6th graders and in May we will participate in their Vocations Fair.

Classes for adults take place in the mornings and evenings. The difficult economy has a great impact on the new immi-grants who participate in the ESOL program. This year forthe first time, women who live in shelters are coming to theprogram. Those who are welfare recipients are required to

do twenty hours of community service. For hercommunity service, one student cleans thechildren's classrooms each week in order toreceive health benefits and food stamps.

Sr. Barbara says, "The biggest motivationfor those coming to learn English is to improve the quality of life for their families."

Mothers of school-age children wantto be able to go to school and talk totheir children's teachers. They alsowant to help their children withhomework. Because of their par-ticipation in English classes, theadults in the ESOL program are

closer to realizing this dream.

Sr. Barbara Walsh, SUSC: Director of ESOL Program at

Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. James Parish, New Bedford, MA.

rn

English is to improve

the quality of life

for

their families."

On March 25th, Jane and I attended a talk given by MaryJohnson, SND, on the NRVC/CARA Study of Religious Life. There is an upward swing in vocations, but things will nothappen immediately. Currently, 75% of men’s religious con-gregations and 66% of women’s congregations have at leastone candidate in initial formation. Since August 2010, wehave received 25 inquiries, with no positive results as yet. What is the plan for Holy Union? Only God knows. Pleasejoin us in praying as we “spring forward.”

The 125th anniversary celebration of the Holy Union Sisters’ service in the United States began on the weekend of October 16 and 17, 2010with a proclamation read in parishes from Ayer, MA to Monticello, KY.

With gratitude and joy, an Opening Prayer

Service spoke of the Holy Union journey through

history to the present. This prayer united sisters,

associates and friends across the continents where Holy

Union Sisters minister. We carry on this historical

journey in the present through Masses of Thanksgiving

across the United States.

We look forward to the year’s final commemoration in

Fall River, MA at Sacred Heart Church followed

by a reception at White’s of Westport, MA.

There is much to be grateful for in this year of jubilee. The inspiration flowing from reflec-tions shared by Holy Union Sisters at various events continues to be part of the fabric ofthis year. Sr. Rita Beaudoin, SUSC, Holy Union archivist, invited everyone gathered onMarch 25th, the Holy Union Feast Day, “to re-commit to the mission of union and recon-ciliation at the heart of the world.” This mission is central to the life and ministry of the HolyUnion Sisters. In your partnership with Holy Union Sisters you also are invited to live this mission of union and reconciliation at the heart of the world. This year is a year of prayer,of reflection and of renewal, as well as a year of blessing.

A particular blessing that I am enjoying this year, is personally being able to meet many ofyou who are named in the following pages. It is a great joy for me to thank you in the nameof the Holy Union Sisters for your loyal support. It is a great joy to see the delight of theSisters when so many of you stop to greet them at the regional events. We continue this year of celebration in a spiritof gratitude for the support you have given in the past. We continue to be grateful for your generosity as the 125thAnniversary Year of Holy Union Presence in the United States continues.

If you have not been able to attend any of the regional celebrations please join us at 3:00 pm on October 16, 2011for the final Mass of Thanksgiving which will be celebrated by Bishop

George Coleman. This celebration will take place at the first Holy Unionfoundation in America, Sacred Heart Church, Fall River, MA. A recep-
