VINEYARDS
THANK YOU FOR VOTING US#1 VINEYARD THREE YEARS IN A ROW!
Writing a newspaper column is romanticized in movies. Fletch, Marley and Me and Continental
Divide come to mind.In real life, there is a little less romance to say the least. But there is a sense of purpose. And as a publisher for a few decades, I have learned to appreciate good columnists and cringe a bit
on those that are not so good. Nationally there are several of each. I thought Bill O'Reilly's column
was an afterthought and a method of capitalizing on his Fox News fame. I loved reading Molly Ivins
while hating nearly every word. I get tired of people telling me George Will is too hard to read; that
may be so but take out a dictionary. As our current president says, it is a learning experience.Dave Simpson is an excellent columnist. From my perspective the best local columnist I have read.
Again, you may not agree with his viewpoint, but the writing is wonderful.Dave writes less about political issues now, but when he did, he would tell you the columns that got
the most buzz was about Woody, his Labrador, the Cadillac of dogs. Woody passed and after a long
mourning period, he rescued Sam, and yes he too is a Cadillac. As I have written a column for a few years now, I try to stay on local and state issues but the truth is,
this is an eyeball-to-eyeball job. Tempering intentions with results is mandatory, but at the end of the
day, are we not suppose to state what we believe? The title of the column page is called Opinion.
One does not have to agree or like. It would be helpful to respect, but that cannot be demanded. The Reader's Choice is frankly humbling. Didn't expect it. But I think I know why.The reason is in this photo with me. That would be Diego. If you read any column I have
written about Diego, he did not do this willingly. After years of living together, hestill treats me very suspiciously. (He was bribed here to get near me.)He is challenged. A great dog in his heart, he is handicapped by a seizuredisorder. It is something he cannot help. He has been ateacher. He has also been a pain in the butt, but he brings out the best in our readers. I thinkhe is the real recipient of this Reader'sChoice Award. Regardless, we areboth thankful.
