When Richard Turbin bought thebuilding at 125 S. Cochran Ave. in 1993half of the massive 17,000-square-footspace was boarded up.
“Nobody wanted it,” he said, of theproperty.
“I had to gut the whole building.”The work included removing 300,000
pounds of plaster to expose the brickunderneath so Turbin could restore thebuilding, built in 1858.
Today Windwalkers Antiques and FineArts Gallery offers a mix of the uniqueand artistic — with paintings coveringthe walls and many things to look at andbuy.
Readers of the Charlotte ShoppingGuide have voted the business it’s Peo-ple’s Choice award winner for “FavoriteAntiques” spot this year.
But Turbin said the operation willbecome a much more active art galleryover the next three months.
Antiques will still be a part of the gal-lery, but its owner said showing and sell-ing art will be a primary focus.
“I love art and all of its differentforms,” said Turbin.
“I’m a designer by nature. I’m thekind of person who, if I look at an object Ithink, what can this be?”
Turbin is an active member of theCharlotte-based Experience Art group.
The organization organized its first-ever “Art Walk,” during this month’s Cel-ebrate Charlotte Festival.
The walk showcased area art at vari-ous downtown businesses.
Turbin said he hopes that his gallerycan be an “art hub” in the near future.
He believes the Charlotte communitysupports the idea.
“I think the interest is there,” heexplained.
“There’s a lot of creative and artisticpeople in the area.
They just don’t have a venue.”

CHARLOTTE — WhenDan Dipple started work-ing at Candy Ford, Inc.nine years ago he wasn’t onthe floor selling cars. Hewas washing them in theback.
But today the CharlotteHigh School graduate isnot only front and centerselling for the dealership— he’s the 2011 CharlotteShopping Guide People’sChoice award winner for“Favorite Car Salesper-son.”
Dipple said being a“people person” and know-ing a lot about the vehiclesfor sale have helped him tobuild a stable local career.
“People will look at me
and think that I’m here tosell cars but when I cananswer any question theyask about the vehicles itbuilds trust,” said Dipple.“They want to know allabout the vehicle and whatit can do.”
He said at the tight-knitdealership customers oftencome back to buy morethan one car from him.
“I’m definitely not thesalesperson that sells thecar and forgets aboutpeople,” said Dipple, whoprefers to stay in contactwith his customers. “I justtry and do the job right thefirst time.”
Dipple said he believesin working with customersto find a car that fits intotheir budget. And what
does Dipple like about thejob? Working in his home-town is at the top of thelist, he said.
“I couldn’t ask for abetter place,” he explained,of Charlotte.
“There’s a lot of goodpeople in this town and it’sa great place to raise afamily.”
That’s exactly what he’sdone with wife Miranda, anOlivet High School gradu-ate.
They are raising sonsDylan, 9, and Dayton, 3here and actively involvedin the community.
“I don’t wake up in themorning and think, ‘Ugh, Ihave to go to work.’
I look forward to goingto work in the morning.”

CHARLOTTE — Rev.Francis Mossholder beganhis work at St. Mary Catho-
lic Church two years ago.The parish serves 700
local families and boastsa growing Catholic gradeschool among its attributes.
But Mossholder said thepeople who worship theremake his job worthwhile.
“It’s a good place,” saidMossholder, of Charlotte.
Rachel Greco | [email protected]
Mossholder is community’s ‘Favorite Pastor’“And an excellent commu-nity.” The feeling is mutual.Readers of the CharlotteShopping Guide have namedMossholder their People’sChoice award winner for“Favorite Pastor” for 2011.
Mossholder said the mostchallenging part of his jobis keeping in contact withthe Catholic parishes’ sick
and home bound members.“I’m their pastor so I shouldknow them,” he explains, and he does his part by vis-iting all of them at leastonce a month.
Mossholder has been amember of the priesthoodfor 23 years and spent 10of them as a missionary inJapan. “If I could go back
I’d do that in a heartbeat,”he said, of the work abroad.
But here in Charlottewhat he values the mostis the relationships withpeople. “I strive to teachthe Gospel without compro-mise,” said Mossholder. “Ijust love my ministry andI think interacting with thepeople.”
St. Mary Catholic Church’s Rev. Francis Mossholder is the 2011 Charlotte Shopping Guide’sPeople’s Choice award winner for “Favorite Pastor.” RACHEL S. GRECO/LCN

CHARLOTTE — Char-Lanes has beena family-run business since 1982, whenco-owner David Jackson’s parents boughtthe bowling alley.
Built in 1961, the business at 1780 Lan-sing Road now has 24 lanes, serves mealsand snacks and is a meeting place forrecreational bowler and high school ath-letes alike. In fact, the rise in high schoolbowling has had a major impact on theCharlotte bowling alley. Charlotte HighSchool teams compete and practice atthe facility — along with Potterville andEaton Rapids teams.
“Literally, there’s 40 to 50 peoplethat will show up just to watch themeets,” explained Jackson. “And it’sgoing to keep growing.” Charlanes pop-ularity hasn’t stopped growing either.Readers of the Charlotte Shopping Guidehave named the bowling alley their Peo-ple’s Choice award winner for “FavoriteBowling Alley” this year.
“In today’s world we have less money
to spend,” said Jackson. But he said resi-dents can bowl one game for less than$2.50. And for the owner of the localbowling alley, the business has become aspot for friends to gather.
“You become friends with everyoneyou bowl with. It’s a social sport,” saidJackson. “Where else can you go and playa sport where you can compete with yourkids?”
And Jackson also believes in taking anactive role in the Charlotte community. “Ithink you need to if you run a businessand if you don’t it’s a mistake.”
Jackson said he’s proud of the businessand happy to have it here. “I think it’sa pretty good bowling center for a smalltown,” he said.

EATON RAPIDS —Maybe it’s the fact that Dr.Jamie Snow loves animalsso much that she alreadyknew in second grade thatshe wanted to be a veteri-narian.
Or it could be thefriendly office atmosphereat Snow’s Animal HealthCare on Michigan Street, including the two happypooches who greet you onevery visit — black labOmar and Boston terrierIke.
Then again, it could beSnow’s great strength asa “people person,” who iswilling to spend the timeand energy it takes to talkto customers about any petproblem or concern.
All of the above havegarnered Jamie Snow the2011 People’s ChoiceAward for the area’s
“Favorite Vet.”Snow, a 1999 graduate
of MSU’s vet school, isobviously exactly whereher talents call her to be.
“I like science, problemsolving and working withpeople’” is how she puts it.
In standard Snow fash-ion, however, she’s quickto extend accolades to herstaff, two full-time and two
part-time employees.“We work as a team,”
Snow said. “(And) we tryhard to provide good ser-vice.”
Snow’s business carriesprescription pet food, grooming brushes andother supplies, but thosearen’t her main focus.
She’s really into edu-cating pet owners sothey understand the rea-sons why she recommendsa certain course of treat-ment, answering all theirquestions in the process.
Eaton Rapids PoliceChief Paul Malewski wasin recently to check on aprescription food for hisdiabetic cat. Does he mindpaying extra for it orinjecting the pet twice aday?
No way.““The cat’s a member of
the family,” he said.Dr. Jamie Snow under-
stands completely.

HOLT - Bargain Books may not be aflashy name and if you haven’t seen manyadvertisements about the store you aren’tthe only one.
And in a world with national bookstorechains offering in-store coffee shops, it isBargain Books in the Kroger plaza thathas won the 2011 People’s Choice awardfor best bookstore.
Manager Laura Spanburg said the keyis word of mouth.
“As the word got out we were able tostay in business and now are happy to behere in Holt,” Spanburg said.
Bargain Books has been in Holt forseven and a half years.
Although they do offer a used bookexchange, the business sells new booksalways at discount prices.
Spanburg said how they do it is theypurchase overstock from other compa-nies and sell it in store.
“We get about four skids a day full ofbooks,” she said. “We always are gettingnew books. Last week we got eight skids”
With 1,000 per skid that’s alot of booksthat must be sold, which means a greatdeal for customers.
“We’ve been real fortunate,” Spanburgsaid. “We try to offer something new ona regular basis, like a special sale on acertain genre.”
She said it is nice to be able to competewith the larger chains that years agoclosed down many “mom and pop” typebookstores.
“The table turned in a way once theeconomy changed,” she said. “And nowthe challenge is the internet sales.”

HOLT – Fat Boys Pizza isan institution.
Despite an onslaught ofcompetition, Holt’s pizzaplace remains a steadybusiness that hasn’tchanged much becausewhatever it is doing isworking.
“I believe inconsistency,” ManagerDave Dec said. “I know itseems simplistic, but thatis the philosophy. You cancall it old school if youwant.”
Fat Boys hasconsistently won thePeople’s Choice award forbest pizza in Holt eversince the award began.
“Take care of what’sin the box,” Dec said.“Product, service, everything.”
Dec has been askedto franchise Fat Boyselsewhere in the Lansingarea. The answer so far hasbeen no.
“Maybe some day whenthe time and situation isright,” he said. “It’s fun tohave one great store. I’velearned my lessons.”
Dec is a hands on man-ager and is often seenworking behind the coun-ter. He said Fat Boys hasgrown into the communityand vice versa.
“For many people, having Fat Boys is essen-tial when you come back toHolt,” he said. “It’s home.”
About that $5 deal thatis so popular right now,Dec said he tried it yearsago at a national chain inFt. Wayne.
“Our numbers weredown and I thought abouttrying to work the math for
a $5 large pizza,” he said.“It was a success, but atthe time corporate didn’tlike it. Another store wasstruggling and the man-ager tried it as wellbecause he figured if hewas going to get shut downhe might as well go downswinging and it helpedsales, but corporate didn’tlike it so the guy went towork for Little Ceasers andthe rest is history.”
Dec said he has noqualms about the $5 deal,he just wonders what isgoing to happen once theeconomy rebounds andpeople are going to look formore quality.
“Where can they gofrom there?” he said.
As for Fat Boys, peoplehave been going there forover 20 years in Holt. Atruly consistant model ofsuccess.

Holt for years, and Harless has donatedher time in the community by serving onseveral committees and organizations. Inturn, it has kept the branch and Dart Bankin the forefront as a community bank andnot a national bank.
Harless said she was really pleasedwith the “Mortgage Company” awardbecause of the competition.
“People like that we don’t take weeksto process something because we don’thave to send it all over the country forapproval,” she said. “We keep everythingin house and the customers like that.”

Volz Family CHIROPRACTICPLLCKylene Volz, DCDear Holt,
I have been meaning to write the Holt community a thank you note for quite a while for warmly welcomingmy family and I into your amazing community for the last 6 years. A great big thank you as well for votingme Holt’s favorite Chiropractor!! I am truly honored and humbled, and as many of you know, emotionalabout the award. I am extremely passionate about Chiropractic, love what I do, and could not imagine doinganything else in life. I feel blessed that Chiropractic chose me and like I always say, “I have the greatestpatients in the world who make it incredibly easy to come into the office each day.” You make me theChiropractor that I am so thank you, thank you, thank you!! I would not be the person I am without a fewother people in my life so let me take this opportunity to thank them as well. First and foremost, my amazingpartner in life, my husband, Ryan, who is the Registered Dietitian in our office, as well as, the greatest fatherto our 3 wonderful children, Jake (3 yo), Jordan (1 yo) and Hayden (10 days old). I could not imagine amoment of my life without you in it. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, as awesome as being a mom anda Chiropractor and balancing them both so easily. That is a big reason why I chose to become a Chiropractorin the first place. My children are the most pure form of love on earth and I am so thankful they chose meto be their mommy!! They inspire me each and every day to give, to love, and to serve in abundance. Myfamily is often times at the office hanging out when I am there and that is what a family practice is all about~ your family & my family getting healthy and having fun together. Also, our practice would not be whatit is without the unwavering support of my best friend, and fellow Chiropractor in the office, Dr. RachelHerman. Thank you for always being as equally committed to our practice and patients. You are an amazingwoman, Chiropractor, and mother! Also, thank you to our hard working and supportive staff members. Youare the greatest team members one could ask for!! It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t include my unbelievablysupportive parents who encourage me everyday to work hard and be happy. You truly inspire me to be abetter person. Lastly, but perhaps mostimportantly, thank you to ourincredible patients who make EVERYSINGLE DAY a wonderful day to cometo the office and adjust you. You makeall of us smile, laugh, and in return wehope to do the same, as well as, provideyou and your families with the bestChiropractic care each and every timewe see you to optimize your health andimprove your quality of life!!
Yours in Chiropractic Health,
Dr. Kylene Volz

LANSING — TexasRoadhouse is the bestplace to eat a steak.
According to readersin Holt, Texas Roadhouseis deserving of winningthe 2011 People’s ChoiceAward because it is simplygood on a consistent basis.
Managing Partner ScottAnglebrandt said thereisn’t a “secret recipe,” butit comes down to how it isprepared.
“We use fresh meat, not frozen like someplaces,” Anglebrandt said.“We have a person whocuts our meat on a dailybasis as well.”
This meat market/restaurant approach has apositive influence on theend result, he said.
“This is the way we doit nationwide,” he said. Theresult is growth by Texas
Roadhouse in the country.Despite a line to be
seated on a constant basis,Anglebrandt said the southLansing roadhouse is notone of the top in terms ofsales in the country.
“However, we are doingwell in terms of the state ofMichigan,” he said.
The place makes it clearas you walk in, with largefresh cuts of steak in adisplay much like a market— daring you to order it.
Anglebrandt said themeat is tenderizedeveryday as well, whichmakes it easier to eat.
The seasoning is asimple garlic and saltcombination.
“Nothing fancy,” hesaid.
The restaurant is alsoinvolved in the Holtcommunity though visitsto elementary schools byAndy the Armadillo andsponsorship of community
programs.The Texas Roadhouse

MASON — If you placedhistoric photographs ofMason State Bank side-to-side, you’d see horsestied to wagons, Model T’s,1940s-era automobiles andmodern cars.
That’s because the bankhas been in business for125 years, and is tocelebrate that mark onJune 28 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and arededication of thebuilding at322 S. Jefferson St.
Mason State Bank alsois this year’s People’sChoice winner for favoritebank.
“From the modes oftransportation, you cantrace the history of thebank,” said Timothy Gay-lord, Mason State Bankpresident and CEO, on theold-time photographs.
Bob Warnke, assistantvice president of branchadministration andmarketing, attributes thebank’s longevity to at leastone fact: Mason being alocal agricultural center.
In 1886, John M.Dresser organized theFarmers Bank of Mason, acting as its first cashier —then a principal executiveofficer of a bank — until1893.
In 1962, the Board ofDirectors decided thebank’s name, “FarmersBank,” should be changedto Mason State Bank toreflect all its business.
However, Warnke said,“I think farmers are anindependent lot, and Ithink that independenceshows.”
Still, a bank doesn’tstay in business for 125years without keeping itscustomers happy.
Plus, there’s the local
aspect.Gaylord said, “We make
loans to our neighbors, andwe have to do it rightbecause we see them faceto face.”
The bank, he said, alsounderstands traditionalvalues and focuses on how“we’d want to be treated onthe other side.”
The bulk of bank busi-ness, Gaylord said, comesfrom single-family homemortgages, and then com-mercial real estate.
“It’s a partnership,”Warnke said of the com-mercial market.
Even though Gaylordacknowledged a lot hasn’tchanged in banking, itcan’t be denied that thebusiness has evolved —to Internet banking, directdeposits, debit cards andATM machines.
Gaylord stressed thebank still has people onhand who understand
banking to put togetherdeals
Mason State Bank alsohas grown.
It has a drive-through
branch by Biggby Coffeeon Cedar Street andbranches in Leslie and EastLansing.
The bank also has culti-
vated relationships with itscustomers.
As Gaylord said, “Hope-fully, we’re fair to them, and they’re fair to us.”

MASON — Being a goodhair stylist involves morethan being adept with acurling iron. It means con-necting with clients too.
That friendly attitudehelped propel Niki LaBelleof Salon 130 to beingnamed the People’s Choicewinner for favorite hairstylist.
LaBelle has been atSalon 130, located at 130 W.Ash St., for about a year.
“My boss is amazing,”LaBelle said of Jena Killer.“Right when I met her, Ithought I definitely coulddeal with this.”
LaBelle said she per-forms many coloring ser-vices for her clients, buther skill set is varied.
“I enjoy all the differentthings because it never
feels repetitive,” she said. Each client also is
unique, according toLaBelle.
“Each one of them, youbuild a friendship and a
relationship with them,”she said.
LaBelle said she learnsabout each person whocomes to her for service.

Catering to their needsalso requires flexiblehours, and LaBelle saidshe’s willing to work at 9 atnight if that’s what worksfor a patron.
LaBelle also keeps upwith style trends like
feather extensions.“It seems like every
year there’s some new fadthat comes out,” she said.
Now the natural lookis more “in,” she said,as opposed to when shefirst started out in thefield about 10 years agowhen the “blonde
bombshell” look wasfavored.
Whatever is in vogueat the moment, LaBelleenjoys being a hair stylist.
“You never really feelyou’re at work,” LaBellesaid.

MASON — It helps to know and honeyour niche in the business world.
That’s probably one of the reasonsthe Ace Hardware at 340 S. Cedar St.was named People’s Choice winner forfavorite hardware store.
“We’re really into repair,” saidManager Chris Iott, who’s been with thestore for 12 years. “We’re not into homeimprovement like a lot of the big boxstores.”
(It also helps that customers can parkright in front of the store, Iott noted.)
Iott said customers who patronize AceHardware perform their own plumbingand repairs.
“I do a pretty good business with
paint,” Iott said. “Paint’s probablyour No. 1 department.”
Ace also has items for the gardener, including bedding plants, lawn mowersand wheelbarrows — all of which arelined up in front of the store — andprovides mower repair.
Iott agreed with the idea thathardware stores are recession-proof indifficult economies because people tendto fix things themselves.
“There’s a pretty consistent flow oftraffic,” he said.
Twenty employees work in the10,000-square-foot store, Iott said.
Ace Hardware is open from8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday,8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m.Sunday.
