Periodontal disease is one of the most common

diseases of humanity

>> By age 35, three out of four adults (75%!)

develop some form of gum disease. This

insidious disease is painless and if

untreated will destroy the gums and bone

surrounding teeth and may eventually lead

to tooth loss.

>> If periodontal disease is treated in the early

stages, many times the damage can be

reversed.

>> Periodontal screening and recording

(PSR® is thus extremely important)

PSR® benefits according to the American Dental Association

(ADA)

>> early disease detection

>> evaluation of all sites

>> simplifies record keeping

>> time effective screening

>> patient education and motivation tool

>> helps market periodontal health within your practice

>> Proper, consistent and documented use of PSR® shows

that the dentist is evaluating a patient‘s periodontal status

>> Should be performed as part of a routine adult oral exam

>> Should be followed by a full periodontal examination when

warranted (e.g. if a patient scores a code 4 in one sextant or

code 3 in two or more sextants)

Some definitions

>> Periodontal pocketsThis space is known as the sulcus, or pocket. It is the spot where the gum attaches to the tooth. Pockets

that are deeper than normal indicate gum disease. This may be either gingivitis (the early stage) or

periodontitis (more advanced disease). To measure these spaces, the dentist uses a periodontal

probe. This is a tiny millimeter ruler with a blunt tip or an electronic device. Your dentist slides the probe

between the tooth and gums at various places around each tooth. Healthy gums cling tightly to the tooth.

The pockets in healthy gums are only 1 to 3 millimeters deep. Diseased gums tend to swell and detach

from the tooth. Pockets become deeper. In advanced forms of periodontitis, the pocket can be more than

10 millimeters deep. The probe measuring the pocket may reach all the way to the tip of the tooth's root. If

a pocket is this deep, it means that much of the soft tissue and bone anchoring the tooth in place has

been lost.

>> RecessionNormally, the roots of your teeth are covered by gum tissue. Many factors, however, may cause the gums

to recede. These include inflammation, badly positioned teeth and hard brushing. Teeth with exposed

roots can have several problems:

- Sensitivity to changes in temperature

- Increased risk of decay

- Unattractive appearance

Dentists use periodontal probes to measure how far gums have receded. They do this by measuring the

distance between the crown of the tooth and the edge of the gum.

Periodontal Examination Methods – a simple probe

++ inexpensive

++ common technology

- not very precise

- Needs two people,

the dentist and

his/her assistant

- Can damage the

sulcus

- Pressure applied is

not consistent

Periodontal Examination Methods – pa-on

++ precise

++ consistent pressure

(20g)

++ immediate charting

++ acoustic and visual

feedback – you

always know where

you are – less

mistakes

++ software based

++ patient friendly

++ measures also

recession, bleeding

and many other extras

++ the small diameter of

the probe makes it

less invasive and

more comfortable.

- More expensive than

a probe

Perio Screening made easy - faster, standardized, reliable and completely

integrated in the software.

>> calibrated measurement with a

constant 20g pressure

>> painless measurement

>> hygienic one-way tips

>> all usual perio status schemes can

be programmed

>> wireless probe

>> automatic Data transfer from the

docking station

>> visualizing of the periodontal status

as well as the historical progress

on the software

>> integration in byzz and all other

existing software systems

>> save on the assistant time

HYGIENIC ONE-WAY TIPS

Painless and calibrated

measurement with exactly 20 g

of pressure.

Optically and acustically supported

measurement. The data is

automatically transfered to the

software (Byzz or other image

management programs) by placing

the probe into its docking station.

pa-on – easier screening ever

>> ergonomical probe design,

wireless and easy-to-use.

>> extra information, f.e. bleeding

can be directly included during

the screening by using one of

the 2 buttons

>> Docking station with USB-

connection to the PC:

measurements are

automatically transfered to the

software.

>> Measurements are immediately

available on the screen for

clarification.

Use the pa-on for prophylactic and early screening of periodonatal problems...

... and open a new income source for your studio

>> Cases of periodontal disease are growing but are

diagnosed much too late.

>> Patient clarification and awareness need to

happen earlier

>> Simultaneous periodontal screening and PSI-

Index possible

>> pa-on is a well-thought-out concept, from the

standard measurement to the patient clarification.

>> A perio treatment is a good income source

Perio is diagnosed &

treated too late
