description

After Convocation each year a series of regional reports are produced which are customized to regions across northern BC. These reports celebrate local grads, award winners, research activities, and other stories relevant to the area. Reports designed for communities with or close to UNBC's regional campuses also feature listings of upcoming local courses.

UNBC Highlights 2011Bioenergy UnderwayChristy Clark was only days into her job as BC Premier when she travelled to UNBC to participate in the official opening of the University’s Bioenergy Plant. The facility uses technology to turn waste wood from Lakeland Mills of Prince George into a gas that is burned to heat the campus. Early tests have demonstrated that the system can produce fewer emissions than burning natural gas. The new plant – which is expected to reduce UNBC’s fossil fuel consumption by 85% – joins a wood pellet system on campus that started operations in 2009.

AwardsWhile UNBC did not repeat as national champion in basketball, it did capture a number of prestigious awards over the past year:• TopcampussustainabilityprojectinNorthAmerica(tiedwithHarvard

Mercer VisitsOne of Canada’s famous television personalities visited UNBC in March to profile the University on CBC. Rick Mercer came after UNBC students won a national challenge to raise money to buy mosquito nets in Africa. See the coverage on YouTube: www.youtube.com/unbcnews.

Local Health Administrator Profiled in New BookA UNBC grad who oversees health service delivery in Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii is among the northern healthcare practitioners profiled in a new book published by the Northern Medical Program. Sheila Gordon-Payne, who has a master’s degree in Disability Management from UNBC, is one of 40 people who describe their rural health experiences in Front Lines, sales of which support the Northern Medical Programs Trust.

Nursing Grads Aim to Work LocallyMore students graduated from Nursing this year than any other major. More significantly, the proportion of Nursing grads who stay and work in the North is the highest among all UNBC degrees. One example is Amy Nyce of Gitwinksihlkw in the Nass Valley, who completed her Nursing degree in Terrace, and is now planning to work in Prince Rupert. Amy’s mom, Sally Ann, was the first graduate (in 1997) of UNBC’s program in the Nass Valley with Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a.
