The fifth edition of Offshore Energy will be held on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 October 2012. The organization continues with the two day concept, which proved to be highly successful this year, with highly satisfactory visitor levels both on the first and the second day of the event.

Offshore Energy 2012 will take place in the same part of the RAI as this year. For the 2012 edition, exhibition hall 8 will offer more floor space. The main exhibition hall will measure 12,000m² compared to the 8,000m² in 2011. The exhibition area can be extended to another,

immediately adjoining, smaller hall of 4,000 m2 (hall 9). Together, the two halls account for over 16,000m², double the surface that Offshore Energy used in 2011.

country pavilionsFor the first time in 2012, Offshore Energy will feature country pavilions. Industry representatives of Germany and China

have agreed to organize country pavilions at Offshore Energy 2012. The Den Helder pavilion will also return to Offshore Energy and the Maritime by Holland pavilion, introduced this year, is expected to double in size next year.

The organization of Offshore energy reflects on a very successful fourth edition of Offshore energy; its first edition to be held in the amsterdam rai. as many as 5,121 unique visitors (compared to 4,026 in 2010) have found their way to the business-to-business exhibition that focuses on the (inter)national offshore oil, gas and wind industry,

along with related products and services. a total of 292 companies (compared to 231 in 2010) displayed their products and services during this event, which was attended by visitors and conference delegates of over 30 nationalities from all over the world including Germany, france, spain, denmark, italy, the united states, china,

australia, Kazakhstan, nigeria, venezuela, the united arab emirates and Ghana.

The number of visitors has grown by more than 20% compared to the 2010 edition. This year, for the first time, the exhibition consisted of two days, 2,991 visitors attended on the first event day.

forging relationsBoth the exhibition, the extensive conference program and the social program offered ample opportunity for networking, forging new relations and exchanging ideas. Several contracts were signed during the exhibition and the show even attracted high level political, governmental and diplomatic representatives. Minister of Defense Hans Hillen visited Offshore Energy to reaffirm his ministry’s support to keep Den Helder Airport open. The highest representative of the United States of America in the Netherlands, Mr. Edwin Nolan, Chargé d’ Affaires a.i. of the United States Embassy, was present to address a select audience during an invitation only Offshore Energy luncheon. He was joined by Mr. Simon Smits, Director General International Relations of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Continued on page 2

The OE2011 conference program brought together 319 delegates who discussed the topics of 50 expert speakers, representing the entire offshore energy supply chain. The conferences, topical sessions and side events covered a broad range of issues including global energy demand and supply, drivers for investments, developments in deepwater, innovations to extend the lifetime of North Sea plays and developments in renewable offshore energy. Because the three conferences each consisted of a half-day program and the short topical sessions took about 1.5 hours each, conference attendance was easily combined with a visit to the exhibition.

looking back, organizer Navingo BV confirms that OE11 was a very successful event: “From exhibitors as well as visitors we have received positive feedback,” reports Annemieke den Otter, Offshore Energy’s Exhibition Manager. “Many exhibitors and visitors mentioned the spacious set-up and professional atmosphere of the exhibition in the Amsterdam RAI as key success factors of this fourth edition,” continues den Otter. “The move to Amsterdam definitely contributed to this, I have heard rumors of companies that weren’t present as exhibitors this year but are very interested to exhibit next year.” Moreover, visitors were satisfied with the broad range of companies present and exhibitors praised the variety and purposefulness of the visitors.

The Offshore Energy exhibition was nice and small, but more than big enough to spend a whole day. It was an excellent networking opportunity, very well organized, and really focused on the offshore industry. Compliments to Navingo, and we look forward for returns in years to come.

This year was the second time that Offshore energy offered a full fledged conference program covering major industry trends. conference topics ranged from extending the lifetime of the north sea portfolio to developing lnG-fpsOs and from advancements in wave & tidal energy to the potential for shale gas in The netherlands. The conferences, topical sessions and side events were attended by delegates representing the entire oil, gas and (renewable) offshore energy value chain.

The main conference program started off with the Global Energy Outlook Conference. Putting the global energy market into a broader perspective, this conference featured speakers offering insights into pressing issues in the global energy arena and into key industry developments. With the Financial Crisis, Arab Spring, rise of China and Brazil, Macondo blowout and also Fukushima, there are developments and circumstances on hand that have repercussions not only in the market, but also in a regulatory and political context.

Gas, gas, gasEach of the three conferences addressed the key role of natural gas. Ruud Zoon, Managing Director GDF Suez E&P spoke during the Global Energy Outlook Conference on Tuesday, illustrating the importance of North Sea gas in the European energy supply. With new investments on the Dutch, British and

Norwegian continental shelves, the role of the North Sea is far from over.

During the Upstream Innovation Conference on Wednesday, Gerard Schut, General Manager Chevron E&P Netherlands, and Bart van de leemput, Managing Director of NAM and Vice President for partner operated

ventures of Shell in Europe, discussed specific examples of managing their companies’ gas portfolios. Schut spoke about how Chevron has developed the A&B Block shallow gas fields. Traditionally seen as undesirable, these fields are now appreciated for their excellent gas quality (C1: >98%). To date, the A12 Block has produced 3.6 BCM.

Van de leemput presented a range of innovative solutions introduced by NAM to increase gas recovery and to save operational costs, ranging from technological innovations such as smaller and smarter drilling rigs (the SWIFT10) and foam injections to practical changes in operations, such as delivering a load to an unmanned offshore platform. NAM now uses four helicopters as opposed to seven in the past, a result of seemingly simple changes, which nonetheless have a major impact on (cost) efficiency.

The Deepwater Gas Conference on Tuesday afternoon discussed more remote gas provinces. Industry experts, among whom René van Vliet, former Vice President Global lNG with Shell, argued that, as the time of easy offshore oil and gas is over around the globe, operators are looking for and have found novel ways to develop stranded gas fields. The invention of floating gas liquefaction plants, or lNG-FPSOs, makes it possible to unlock and monetize gas reserves that were earlier seen as too costly

or too difficult to develop. Although floating lNG definitely looks like a game changing development for the gas industry and for the energy supply balance, there are still many technical, operational and commercial challenges that have to be overcome. Conn Fagan, Business Development Manager offshore gas projects with DNV, gave a clear insight as to the challenges associated with the classification of lNG-FPSOs and how a new regulatory framework for this type of vessel is being developed.

predictable base loadNext to the three conferences, Offshore Energy 2011 offered five brief topical sessions. One of these addressed the developments in wave and tidal energy. Roger Bason, CEO of the American company Natural Currents Energy Services, argued that the sea can offer a constant and predictable power base load. Although there are countless demonstration projects, the technology is still being developed and there is as yet no commercial installation for this type of renewable offshore energy. This is largely because, as Allard van Hoeken of Bluewater Energy Services states, “Everything under water is expensive and difficult.” Despite this, the European Union Ocean Energy Roadmap estimates the market potential of wave and tidal energy in Europe at 3.6 GWp in 2020 and 188 GWp in 2050.

Well controlAt the meeting of the Drilling & Wells cluster, a side event, oil and gas managers and drilling contractors discussed new solutions and industry best practices to deliver safe and effective wells. Dave Price, CEO of the International Well Control Forum, highlighted how the Macondo blow-out has changed well control training methods and requirements. Dave Mckellar of Dana Petroleum and Bram

leerdam of Noble Drilling presented their views on safe and efficient drilling project execution. Following the presentation, the meeting participants engaged in a World Café brainstorm session on various aspects of well integrity.

Offshore Energy 2011 offered multiple networking drinks and event opportunities. On Monday 10 October, the day that many international visitors arrived and exhibitors built up their booths, an informal kick-Off party took place in the Event Hotel. A mixed group of visitors and exhibitors met to celebrate the start of Offshore Energy. At the end of the first exhibition day, a significant part of the exhibitors attended the Network Evening. In the Amsterdam Cafe, a typical ‘Dutch’ venue, more than 250 exhibitors gathered to enjoy a walking dinner, various speeches, stand-up comedy and a live band. On 12 October, the event concluded with a social drink for both visitors and exhibitors in the exhibition hall.

For the 2012 edition, an extensive three-day social and networking program will be arranged. Event organizer Navingo will plan social drinks, dinners and parties for both visitors and exhibitors alike, ensuring maximum networking possibilities during Offshore Energy.
