a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the con-duct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 62 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distrib-uted to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excel-lence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excel-lence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The Col-lege of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so hon-ored.

A member of the Na-tional Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competi-tion in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most of-fered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the con-ference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ohio Wesleyan University emerged as the preseason favorite in balloting by North Coast Athletic Conference men's soccer coaches.

The Battling Bishops, who made their NCAA-record 33rd trip to the Division III national tournament last fall, collected eight of 10 first-place votes cast by league coaches for 96 total points. Kenyon, which also participated in the 2010 Div. III national tournament, was second in the balloting with 80 points, while NCAC newcomer DePauw placed third with 79 points. Denison placed fourth in the poll with 67 points, while Hiram rounded out the top five with 52 points, including one first-place vote. Oberlin was just shy of the top five with 51 points, with Allegheny (48), Wittenberg (33), Wabash (32) and Wooster (12) rounding out positions seven through 10. In addition, Little Giants collected the final first-place vote in the poll.

During the 34-year tenure of head coach Jay Martin, Ohio Wesleyan holds an overall record of 585-113-49 (.816), making Martin the winningest active coach in college men's soccer (all divisions). The Battling Bishops, who are also ranked fifth in the 2011 NSCAA Div. III preseason poll, finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 19-2-2 and a trip to the NCAA Div. III national quarterfinals. Ohio Wesleyan's offense will be led by senior Travis Wall (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) who was second in the NCAC in scoring last season with 32 points (10g, 12a). The senior forward is a two-time, first-team All-NCAC selection for the Bishops. OWU's defensive unit will be led by junior goalie Paul Hendricks (Columbus, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) who led the league last fall in shutouts (12) and save percentage (.869).

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
