New City, New TeamsThis weekend’s trip to San Francisco will be the first ever trip to the Bay Area for Tiger Volleyball and will mark the start of three new series with Providence, Columbia and San Francisco. In 40 years of competition, Memphis has not faced any of the three teams in the tournament this weekend.

2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sopho-more season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 cam-paign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match.

800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers cur-rently rank 28th on the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list, just one game behind George Washington.

Fab 50After winning four straight to start the season, head coach April Jauregui is just six victo-ries away from reaching the 50 win plateau.

This is Your Captain SpeakingAltrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar have been anointed the 2011 captains for Tiger Volleyball. Each returns after standout campaigns in 2011. The junior downed 483 kills and had a team-best .305 hit-ting percentage in 2010.

Fresh FacesThe Tigers welcome Lauren Hawkins (Rowlett, Texas), Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash.) and Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio) to the program this season.

Memphis Sweeps To Open 2011MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tiger volleyball team opened the 2011 season Friday with a sweep (36-34, 25-22, 25-15) of Alabama A&M in the Memphis Invitational. Junior Marija Jovanovic led the way for the Tigers with 16 kills while junior Altrese Hawkins followed with 14 putaways on the strength of a .353 hitting percentage.

Ready to get the season started, the Tigers jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in set one with offensive production from all over the court. But hitting errors began creeping into the Memphis offense, allowing Alabama A&M to conjure up an 11-10 advantage. Hawkins proved why she is the Tigers’ go-to hitter with a powerful cross-court kill to halt the Bulldogs’ momentum and put Memphis back on top. After a flurry of sideouts and trading points, the Tigers put together three straight scores to go up 21-17 and seemingly take control.

But A&M wasn’t done yet and used a 6-1 run to earn set point at 24-23. A kill from Jovanovic kept the Tigers alive as did three more kills from Hawkins with Memphis continually facing defeat. The set continued well past the 25-point mark with neither team willing to give up the back-to-back scores needed to win. Tied at 34, Hawkins finally gave the Tigers the opportunity they needed with a kill down the middle to reach set point, which they converted on a four-hit call to win 36-34. Hawkins and Jovanovic each posted eight kills in the set to power Memphis to victory.

Set two began much as set one ended with both teams evenly matched and trading points. But with the score tied at 19, the wheels fell off for the Bulldogs as they racked up four straight hitting errors and quickly found themselves trailing 23-19. The spurt was enough for the Tigers as they took advantage to win 25-22.

After trailing 3-1 early in set three, Memphis put together a 9-1 run punc-tuated with a kill from Jovanovic to take a 10-4 lead. The Tigers led the rest of the way and ended the set on a 4-0 spurt to claim the dominating 25-15 win.

vs. Alabama A&M Friday, Aug. 26Memphis, 3-0

Memphis Volleyball Collects 800th VictoryMEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis (2-0) collected its 800th program vic-tory Friday night with a four-set (19-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-12) win over Southeast Missouri in the Memphis Invitational. Altrese Hawkins fin-ished with 18 kills and a .630 hitting percentage to lead the Tigers while Alexsandra Petronijevic finished with 21 digs on the evening. Freshman Lauren Hawkins also made her presence felt with eight kills on .400 hitting. Brittney Kalinoski recorded a double-double for SEMO with 11 kills and 13 digs.

The early stages of the first set were marred with passing miscues by the Tigers, as they dug themselves a three-point deficit, 7-4, to the Redhawks. Memphis would fight back and knot the game at 10-all behind several Altrese Hawkins’ kills. However, SEMO continued to capitalize on Memphis errors and pushed the lead out to six, 19-13. The Redhawks held on to the six-point lead to win the set 25-19. SEMO was led by Colleen Yarber with four kills and Kalinoski with six digs in the set. Altrese Hawkins paced Memphis with seven kills on ten attempts (.700 percent).

After exchanging points to a 5-5 tie in the early moments of the second set, Memphis rallied to take a 10-6 lead, forcing a timeout by SEMO. A mon-strous kill on a slide-attack by Lauren Hawkins gave Memphis a six-point lead, 12-6. In a reversal from the first set, Memphis took advantage of sev-eral SEMO receiving errors en route to a commanding 22-11 lead. However, the Redhawks wouldn’t go quietly, twice cutting the lead down to six before an Altrese Hawkins kill closed the set, 25-18.

Coming out of the break, Altrese Hawkins connected on a powerful kill as Memphis took a 6-2 lead. In a set in which Memphis passed the ball very well, SEMO was only able to pull within three on three separate occasions. Hawkins finished the set, 25-16, for Memphis with yet another kill from the outside.

Memphis jumped out to a 7-5 lead to start the fourth set. Altrese Hawkins continued her dominant aerial assault in the set as the Tigers built a 20-10 lead. Memphis put the game away, finishing out the set 25-12.

Memphis, 3-1

Tigers Put On Offensive Show To Defeat UALRMEMPHIS, Tenn. - An impressive offensive showing helped the Memphis Tigers pull out a four-set (25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-15) win over UALR Saturday afternoon in the Memphis Invitational. The Tigers hit .314 for the match with 16 kills from junior Mariya Jovanovic and 14 from junior Altrese Hawkins to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Hawkins got the Tigers going in the first set with four kills on Memphis’ first five points, helping the home team build an early lead. The Memphis block also proved formidable in the early stages of the match as UALR continu-ally faced a wall of opposition. A Trojan timeout trailing 18-10 did nothing to slow down the Tigers as they forged ahead for the 25-18 win. Hawkins finished the set with seven kills on .667 hitting.

UALR kept it close early in set two, but the Tigers still managed to claw their way to a 15-10 advantage on the strength of four kills from Jovanovic. From there, it was all Memphis as the Tigers closed out the set on a 10-3 run to win, 25-14. Jovanovic hit a blistering .875 in the set with seven kills while the UALR attack managed just seven putaways and seven errors.

With their backs against the wall, the Trojans came out hot in set three to go up 5-1 and force an early Memphis timeout. The Tigers slowly chipped away at the lead out of the break until a kill from Hawkins finally put them in front, 11-10. But the lead was short-lived as a 4-0 UALR streak soon had the Tigers on their heels and trailing by two. With momentum on their side, the Trojans squeezed out the 25-23 victory to stay alive in the match.

After getting strong offensive output in the first three sets, hitting errors plagued the Tigers early in set four. But it was a Trojan miscue that sparked a 4-0 Memphis run to give the Tigers a 10-8 lead. Back-to-back service aces from Jovanovic increased the advantage to 14-9. The opening was all Memphis needed as the Tigers sprinted to a 25-15 win.

Memphis Claims Title With Four-Set Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After a closely contested four sets, the Memphis Tigers (4-0) stood victorious over the Georgia State Panthers (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22) to claim the Memphis Invitational Tournament title.

Junior Altrese Hawkins, who was later named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, recorded 18 kills. Junior Marija Jovanovic (15 kills, 16 digs) and junior Vesna Jelic (11 kills, 13 digs) each posted double-doubles in the battle between the two unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. Junior setter Haljnalka Molnar contributed 61 assists in the match.

Memphis was the first to gain control with a 10-7 edge on the scoreboard in set one. Georgia State demonstrated moxie in making the comeback to pull ahead 13-12. Behind a Jelic attack and a pair of Panther mistakes, Memphis regained a two-point advantage, a margin that the Tigers maintained as they closed out the set 25-22.

With Memphis trailing in the opening moments of the second set, sopho-more Katie Meyer and Jovanovic combined on the block, and the Tigers converted a long rally on the way to a 6-3 advantage. The Panthers slowly climbed their way back into an 11-11 tie. With the Tigers up 14-13, Jelic made a great dig that created a monstrous kill by Altrese Hawkins. Kangwa responded with a kill of her own igniting a GSU run to give them a 17-16 edge. The Tigers were able to stave off one set point, but GSU capitalized on the second opportunity to take the set, 26-24.

Georgia State came out of the break on a blistering pace, creating a quick 5-0 deficit for the Tigers. Memphis found its composure and climbed back into the game to tie it at 10-all, before taking a two-point advantage, 13-11. Despite a flurry of service errors, the Tigers were able to expand the two-point margin to four points at 20-16. The Panthers would stave off three set points, but Jelic closed out the set, 25-23, with a kill.

GSU’s front line posted back-to-back blocks on the Tigers and jumped out to an 11-9 advantage in the fourth set. The Panthers’ front line continued to be a strong presence en route to building a four-point edge, 17-13. Behind the strength of multiple Altrese Hawkins’ kills, Memphis tied the game at 18-all and eventually regained the lead at 20-19. The Tigers closed out the Panthers following a tough-fought rally, 25-22.
