Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is humbled to work together with so many outstanding partners across the region to provide the most advanced cancer care, close to home. Providing more local access to quality care was the initial vision for Mary Bird Perkins more than 40 years ago, and today that vision holds true. While the Center has expanded over the years, its original expertise in radiation oncology has remained at the forefront. The radiation oncologists practicing across the service area have unparalleled skill and experience. They are an invaluable part of the expertise that has successfully brought Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to its 40th anniversary celebration.

In addition to working with a team of dedicated radiation oncologists, Mary Bird Perkins, through these many partnerships, has the opportunity to work with numerous cancer experts and a wide range of extended medical staff to help patients fight cancer.

❝From the beginning, we all believed patients were the heart and soul of Mary Bird Perkins, and we existed for them. I always envisioned Mary Bird becoming what it is today.❞

6 MARy BIRD PERkINS CANCER CENTER

More than 40 years ago, a handful of passionate community visionaries decided

that cancer patients should have access to state-of-the-art radiation therapy

close to home. The rest, as they say, is history.

These remarkable founders paved the way for what is known today as Mary Bird

Perkins Cancer Center – a dynamic cancer care organization serving thousands

of people across southeast Louisiana. This organization is very fortunate for the

hospital and physician partners across the region that work together with Mary

Bird Perkins to provide exceptional cancer care close to home, family and friends,

just as the founders intended. They knew from the very start that being able to

receive treatment while surrounded by the support of loved ones is critical in the

fight against cancer. Everyone associated with Mary Bird Perkins strives to be an

extension of that support, with a devotion to providing sincere and exemplary

service to all.

It is because of long-standing and phenomenal community support that Mary

Bird Perkins is thriving today and providing more vital programs and services

than ever before. your continued investment in saving lives and building healthier

communities is vitally important. Much is owed to the original founders, but

countless people along the way, like you, have sustained its mission.

increased survivorship and more advances toward a cure are reasons to celebrate the remarkable progress made in the fight against cancer over the past four decades. Also to be celebrated is the commitment made by so many to focus on the future.

Mary Bird Perkins is proud to stand with you and never give up until there is no

more cancer.

Sincerely,

Todd D. Stevens

History

I n the late 1960s, community leaders headed by Dr. M.J. Rathbone, Jr., and Anna B. Lipsey saw the need for a

community owned, non-profit radiation cancer facility in the greater Baton Rouge area. With both the vision and financial support of the community, the facility, known today as Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, opened its doors to patients in 1971.

❝Everything turned out wonderful,” says Bruce Hinkson, Covington Center patient. His treatment plan for prostate cancer required both surgery at St. Tammany Parish Hospital and radiation at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “I had to have eight weeks of radiation treatments. My family wanted me to go to Houston, but I wanted to stay near my home in Bogalusa. I was lucky I could. Everyone at Mary Bird Perkins was lovely. They told me exactly what they were going to do so I knew what to expect. The machine they used to treat me worked out great. I’m cancer free!❞

Patient NavigationPatients needing a helping hand in their cancer journey can find support through the Patient Navigation Program at The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins. Whether it’s finding a doctor after a free cancer screening, locating transportation to appointments or psychosocial help, navigators are there to fill in the gaps. Since the program began in July 2010, patient navigators have assisted more than 300 patients.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC in Houma is committed to helping cancer patients every step of the way with its Patient Navigation Program. The patient navigator, Julia Light, who is also a registered nurse, works with patients to ensure seamless care begins at the very first appointment and goes through treatment and beyond. Patients describe the patient navigator as their very own cancer care coach, helping them with many issues and providing them with guidance throughout recovery and survivorship.

Patients at The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins can get a helping hand at every stage of their cancer journey from patient navigators. Cancer Program navigators include (L to R): Melissa Smithee, MSW, LMSW; Suzanne Hotard, BSN, RN, OCN; Mary Kathryn Rodrigue, Ph.D., LPC, NCC; Victoria Nocilla, LMSW; Kristina Little, MSW, LMSW; and LaRue Jolly, LCSW, OSW-C (not pictured).

❝I’m a nurse, so I know it’s important to check your breasts on a regular basis,” says Ashley Clark of Baton Rouge, who felt something unusual in both breasts during her monthly self-examination. “At age 26, I didn’t know who would take someone so young, and I don’t have insurance,” she says. Ashley called Mary Bird Perkins, and they made space for her at a free screening in Gonzales the following weekend. “I was very happy to find out they would take me. Everything turned out OK in the end, and I really appreciate the services.❞

researchNational Clinical TrialThe Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is helping to build a community-based research platform through Moffitt Cancer Center’s Total Cancer Care (TCC®) program. As one of 18 sites across the nation participating in TCC, The Cancer Program collects patient data and high-quality tissue samples with the goal of advancing personalized medicine and creating a new frontier in cancer research.

Medical Physics Partnership with LSUDr. kenneth Hogstrom retired in October from his positions as Chief of Physics, MBPCC; Professor and Director, LSU Medical Physics and Health Physics Program; and Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair of Medical Physics, LSU. “During Dr. Hogstrom’s tenure, his hands-on teaching style raised the bar in medical physics education at LSU’s flagship university,” said LSU Chancellor Michael Martin. Todd Stevens, President and CEO of MBPCC, praised Dr. Hogstrom for his leadership of the Mary Bird Perkins – LSU Medical Physics Program over the past seven years.

Dr. Wayne Newhauser was appointed as Hogstrom’s successor and given the same titles. “Dr. Newhauser’s outstanding research and scholarly credentials make him an excellent choice to continue and build upon Dr. Hogstrom’s legacy,” said kevin Carman, dean, LSU College of Science, and member, Board of Directors, MBPCC.

(L to R): Dr. Kevin Carman, Todd Stevens, Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, Dr. Charles M. Smith

Improving Cancer Treatment The greatest activity of medical physics research in MBPCC history was marked in 2011, funded largely by three national grants – Department of Defense (DOD), Elekta, Inc. and .decimal, Inc. – at an annual rate of $1.33 million.

The DOD grant funded two projects that allowed MBPCC and LSU to investigate ways of more precisely targeting cancer cells with radiation. The Elekta grant enabled MBPCC to better utilize imaging and treatment delivery systems for volumetric modulated arc and electron therapies. Finally, the .decimal grant allowed MBPCC to implement a dose calculation model into a commercial product that is now used at more than 100 radiotherapy centers nationwide to design boluses used for electron conformal therapy.

❝Under Ken’s leadership, this program brought together a powerful combination of resources that has made a real difference in the way cancer is ultimately treated, all benefiting the patient.❞

❝Being able to participate in a clinical trial and knowing that I’m helping to impact cancer care made my treatment process easier,” says Terri Brackins. “It wasn’t just about me—it was about sisters, mothers, grandmothers and others who will be treated for breast cancer in the future. I’d encourage all cancer patients to participate in a clinical trial if they are eligible. Who knows…you could help make that one big breakthrough in cancer research.❞

Tobacco Cessation Program The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is making strong headway in helping cancer patients kick the tobacco habit through its no-cost “Geaux Free” group and inpatient program.

Group classes consist of a one-hour session once a week for nine consecutive weeks. Data shows that 59 percent of patients who completed our classes have quit smoking and another 31 percent reduced their tobacco usage. The Cancer Program also offers a one-on-one tobacco cessation counseling program for cancer patients admitted to the hospital and has a success rate higher than the national average, according to the Clinical Practice Guidelines: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in 2008.

Medical Physics Education The Mary Bird Perkins – LSU Medical Physics Program was granted re-accreditation of its Master of Science degree and inaugural accreditation of its Ph.D. degree by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs. Additionally, an update made to the Ph.D. curriculum requirements has made it possible to complete a doctoral degree in five years – similar to other leading programs in the U.S.

The establishment of a residency training program for medical physicists, under the leadership of Dr. John Gibbons, chief of clinical physics, MBPCC, has generated residency program affiliations with Willis-knighton Cancer Center, Shreveport; Oncologics, Lafayette and University of Mississippi Cancer Center, Jackson, Miss.

voLunteerisM Volunteer Award Recipients Honored at GalaSeveral prestigious annual Volunteer Awards were presented at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s 40th Anniversary Celebration Gala, each recognizing Mary Bird Perkins volunteers who made a positive impact in the fight against cancer. “It is because of volunteers like these that our organization has flourished,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO, MBPCC. “They are invaluable to the success of the mission.”

The Hillar C. Moore, Jr. Outstanding Service Award recognizes a significant service contribution to the philanthropic initiatives of MBPCC or Foundation. It was presented to G. Lee Griffin who, for the past 20 years, has been an active supporter of MBPCC. Although Lee has been a donor since 1991, he began his leadership at the Center when he served as Chairman of the MBPCC Foundation from 2007 to 2009. Currently, Lee serves as a member of the MBPCC Board of Directors and is Chairman of its Development Committee.

Bill and Gail O’Quin were presented with the Louis D. Curet Volunteer Fundraiser Award that recognizes a recipient for launching a significant philanthropic initiative. Bill and Gail are both champion volunteers for MBPCC, having raised thousands of dollars for the Center’s programs in our community. They generously give of their own time and treasure and are therefore an inspiring example for others to follow.

❝I am honored to receive this award. Mary Bird Perkins treats all people, whether they can afford it or not, and they provide free screenings. Their mission is to save lives, and I’m proud to be a part of that.❞

G. Lee Griffin❝Gail and I are indeed honored to be presented with this award. Mary Bird Perkins is a tremendous organization that does so much good for our community. We’re just happy to be a part of it.❞

Anna B. Lipsey MemorialVolunteer of the Year AwardThe Anna B. Lipsey Memorial Volunteer Service Award was presented at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center 40th Anniversary Celebration Gala to Judy and Bob Cancienne for their kindness and generosity of spirit with cancer patients, even as they were both undergoing treatment themselves. Unfortunately, Bob Cancienne has since passed away. Upon being presented with their award that evening, Judy said, “The gift of giving and receiving brings great joy. We’ve experienced that at Mary Bird Perkins.”

❝Volunteers fill many roles at Mary Bird Perkins. Some comfort and care for patients, like the Canciennes. Bob will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by both patients and staff.❞

❝It was community volunteers who had the vision for what ultimately became Mary Bird Perkins. Because of their dream and determination, and the many volunteers over the years who believed in what they wanted to create, we have been able to remain true to their vision to provide quality cancer care close to home in many communities across southeast Louisiana.❞

In April, nearly 500 Mary Bird Perkins volunteers, staff members and special guests gathered at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center for the organization's Anniversary Gala celebrating 40 years of volunteerism.

Event sponsors included Presenting Sponsor Gerry Lane Enterprises, Volunteer Awards Sponsor Louisiana Lottery Corporation, Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry, Mockler Beverage-Budweiser, Ruffino’s Italian Restaurant, Digital FX, Baton Rouge Printing, TJM Restaurant Management and Diane Allen and Associates. Music was provided by Eric Baskin.

Honorary Chair Richard Lipsey’s mother, Anna, was one of The Center’s founders along with 15 others, including Dr. M.J. “Jack” Rathbone. Dr. Rathbone’s son, Dr. Richard Rathbone, attended the celebration and spoke of how pleased his father would be to know that today Mary Bird Perkins has expanded to five Centers and that its reputation for excellence is now worldwide.

At the conclusion of the evening, Thomas J. “T.J.” Moran announced a gift of $1 million to the Center’s Foundation. Introduced by his nephew, Dr. Tom kiebach, Moran, a 22-year survivor of throat and lung cancer and former Mary Bird Perkins patient, credited Dr. Robert Fields, radiation oncologist, and the expert staff. “Saving and extending lives is possible at Mary Bird Perkins. I hope my gift helps extend other people's lives,” Moran said.

Sixty-eight percent of employees across all Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center locations generously pledged and donated more than $37,000 to the 2011 Partners of Hope Campaign. Money raised supports the Center’s mission and helps remove barriers such as lack of transportation and nutritional supplements needed for patients to receive care. Additionally, the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation generously matched the first $15,000 donated, raising the total pledged to more than $52,000.

❝This past year we reached a major goal in our work to grow a healthy endowment. Thanks to an extraordinary donation by Mr. Thomas “T.J.” Moran and the associated Heart of a Hero giving program, our mission to build an endowment to fight cancer was greatly fortified. We must all continue to support Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation today to ensure its ability to make a difference in cancer care tomorrow.❞

DIRECTORS, CHAIR

As Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2011, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation also celebrated a remarkable milestone. The Foundation’s endowment surpassed the $5 million threshold, thanks to an extremely successful year of contributions.

With leadership and support from Mr. Thomas J. “T.J.” Moran, Heart of a Hero, Mary Bird's new grateful giving program was launched. Thanks to 73 generous donors, nearly $1.2 million in gifts and pledges were received in recognition of their heroes. As a result, 23 new Anna B. Lipsey Legacy Builders were added. All of these generous gifts will help further build a permanent endowment dedicated to helping fight cancer in the communities served by Mary Bird Perkins.

In 2011, we honored the amazing past of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. It will be the responsibility of the MBPCCF to help secure its bright future.

Have you left your legacy?

Anna B. Lipsey Legacy Builders is comprised of individuals who have made or have notified Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation (MBPCCF) of their intent to make planned gifts through their estate plans. Donors who have made outright gifts of $10,000 or more to the endowment or created endowed gifts for specific programs are also recognized as Anna B. Lipsey Legacy Builders.

Through their generosity, the following individuals are helping MBPCCF build a perpetual endowment fund in support of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. The endowment will also ultimately help support other nonprofit entities that have demonstrated the ability to conduct cancer-related programs, provide services that reduce cancer incidence and mortality, or improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer.

2011 COMMUNITy REPORT 47

Page 50: 2011 Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Community Report

Saving lives and extending life is possible at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. This is the sentiment expressed by the grateful patient who inspired Heart of a Hero, Mr. T.J. Moran, a 22-year throat and lung cancer survivor who was treated at MBPCC.

Mr. Moran’s immense gratitude and respect for the members of his treatment team led him to make an extraordinary donation of $1 million to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation, announced at the Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala in April 2011. This overwhelming act of generosity brought to life Heart of a Hero, a grateful giving and recognition program to support the fight against cancer.

Heart of a Hero is available to anyone, for any amount, to honor or memorialize individuals who have touched their lives and support Mary Bird Perkins’ life-saving work. Share your hero with us at marybird.org/hero.

Mr. Moran’s story has inspired so many already. The inaugural donors to this program include:T.J. Moran, cancer survivor
