HAPPY HOLIDAYS LG!

The holidays have always been my favorite time of year,

as it is a time of reflecting, being thankful and showing generosity. Additionally, the merriment and aesthetically pleasing lighting and decor brought about from the holiday season, counter the shorter and colder days. In Los Gatos, the festivities are particularly noticeable with the town’s attention to detail indoors and out, in the park, the main streets and even with the horse carriage rides. Within the environment and warmth of the community shines a special light, and all should be thankful to be a part of such a wonderful

neighborhood. Individuals in Los Gatos are what contribute to its greatness, as everyone is particularly caring. Our new library is a perfect example. I am extremely impressed with the fundraising community that has come together, under the direction of the Friends of the Library’s Once in a Generation capital campaign, to raise $2.1 million for furnishings and fixtures in the new library. Many local service clubs and charities have stepped up to the challenge. These groups have included the new library as a fundraising beneficiary, thereby contributing to a critical common goal. To further the process, the Friends of the Library have also created wonderful fundraising events. The collaboration of the Los Gatos populous is mirroredin the generosity and pride commonly attributed to their community. And now, the Friends of the Library campaign committee is in the final stretch, and is making a heartfelt request for year-end donations from anyone who wants to participate in this historic and monumental project.

We are grateful to all the Los Gatans who have made donations to support our town’s new library,” says Carol Hamilton, president of Friends of the Library. “Because of their support, we are moving closer to raising the money our town needs to complete the new library. And, folks who haven’t contributed to this exciting project can still do so. They may want to consider the library in their year-end giving as donors receive a tax deduction, along with the knowledge that they are leaving a critical legacy for generations to come! Any size donation is needed and welcome! Almost 89 percent of the funds have been raised, which means that there is approximately $250,000 left to raise. If each person in town gave just $10, we would reach our goal. Donations above $500, however, can be acknowledged with a permanent plaque in the new library. You can find information about making a donation on the Friends website: www.friendsoflglibrary.org. – Carol Hamilton, president of Friends of the Library ”

06 LGLEADERS

LGAlmaden Lifestyle Magazine Los Gatos Lifestyle Magazine

The Rotary Club was established in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois by founder Paul Harris and the group included four members who “rotated” meeting each week at each other’s offices for lunch,

hence their namesake. The committee included only one person from each profession in town. Initially the four separate businessmen met for lunch and discussed the business climate in their community, with the likeminded idea being to spur business, and enjoy fellowship, getting away from their daily business. Ultimately, this non-partisan, non-sectarian organization known as the Rotary Club focused on humanitarian service and building goodwill in the world and the membership grew in great numbers. Four more groups were launched on the west coast, and by 1911 they became international with a group opening in Dublin. These business and professional leaders of all ages (18 and upwards) and economic status have continued to grow through a global organization known as Rotary International. Celebrating their existence for over a century, they have survived through wars, diseases, and much adversity, but have thrived and improved themselves along the way. Since the 80’s the Rotary has expanded their membership to include all segments of the community.

Rotary Club of Los Gatos The Rotary Club of Los Gatos was established in January 1924 with about 15 members. They got the idea from other rotary clubs. San Jose and Palo Alto both had established rotary clubs and they sponsored the Los Gatos Club opening. That same year, the Los Gatos Lions Club was established as well.

Since that time, the Rotary became a strong service committee, providing help to the community. Because of their growth, they have become influential, as well. Twenty years ago, Rotary began a program to eradicate Polio throughout the world. Now it is only prevalent in 3 or 4 countries, as the Polio effects are terrible, paralyzing children. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided $355 million in challenge grants, partnering with Rotary International who are well on their way to meeting their $200

million goal to complete the inoculation endeavor. The Rotary reaches over 200 different countries at this

time. Los Gatos is part of a district whose territory reaches from Oakland to Gilroy, and is one of the most influential. More dollars are contributed from this district than from any other district in the world to both international and local programs. Currently the Rotary Club of Los Gatos has grown to 115 members, and the Los Gatos Morning Rotary has 70

members. The Los Gatos Morning Rotary (known as the Los Gatos Cool Cats was a spin-off from the lunch group, but like the

name suggests, they meet for breakfast.

Auction and CrabFestThe Rotary Club of Los Gatos began their first “auction” fundraiser in 1981 under Rotary President William Johnson, and Auction Chairman John Pencer. It was very systematically discussed, weighted and voted on, as prior to this they did not hold events. This change provided a vehicle to take care of more local charities, and this desire to help only grew, along with the size and revenue of their annual event. They went from raising $1,500 to $10,000 plus.

By 1993 the auction interest was waning, and Bob Lathrop and Darrell Monda co-chaired the event with the charter to grow involvement, and that they did, as the Rotary profited $27,000 plus. In 1995 a casino night was added to the auction. During 2001 President Rosemary Pierce (LG Rotary’s first female president) along with another member Joe Varozza discussed the homeless living in Los Gatos, along the creek-side of their recreational paths, and suggested the LG Rotary raise funds to help these individuals, by sponsoring a program known as Saint Luke’s Pantry, which is hosted by Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. Besides providing food and clothing every Tuesday, the donated funds are used to provide shelter, supplies (tents, tarps, sleeping bags), transportation assistance in the form of bus tokens, food vouchers for hot meals, and health care supplies. A crab feast was combined with the annual auction to further raise funds for the homeless and many other community programs. The Rotary opened the attendee invitation to non-members of the community in order to grow their profit. This doubled the event size immediately. The Rotary Club of Los Gatos still holds the annual combined event (crab feed and auction) and now contributes to dozens of causes.

“The CrabFest and Auction provide funding for 30 local charities—from aid to the Homeless to the Library Project, to Los Gatos High School student activities, to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank. It is a great opportunity to enjoy a terrific dinner, as well as have fun and fellowship while supporting the local community.” – William (Bill) Piché

They started raising funds 86 years ago. Through the years, they sold hot dogs and “Orange Bang” orange drinks at the Chamber of Commerce Wine and Art Festival, but they have now blossomed into a strong and supportive community service organization.

What Can You Do to Help?Your favorite community event is being brought to you again this year, with a revamped title, the CrabFest. The Rotary Club of Los Gatos CrabFest will be followed by a live auction and silent auction, so save the date January 28th, 2012 (Saturday) at Saint Mary’s Church from 6pm to 9pm. Be sure to purchase your tickets priced at $45 per adeult and $20 for kids under the age of 10.

Auction Items and Volunteers: If you are interested in donating to our auction or if you would like to help, please contact John Pencer at (408) 265-2042. For more information visit www.losgatosrotary.org.

A concert to honor this amazing piano was held at the Ralston Mansion. The Steinway & Sons’ grand piano that recently resurfaced has a rich history and belonged to the notable Harry S. Harkness. Interestingly,

this is the first time this beautiful instrument with its fascinating history has been available for purchase.

THE HISTORYHaving been restored to its original beauty, including the 24-karat gold leaf patina highlighting the detailed carvings, this piano is one of the most expensive pianos built during that era. With the magnificence of its tone and beautiful art case this piece of American history brings with it the allure of an intriguing past and more than a hint of drama and romantic mystery. Harry S. Harkness, who has been referred to as the Howard Hughes of his era, was one of the pioneers in early aviation as well as an acclaimed automobile racer who raced against Henry Ford and awarded his Harkness Trophy to Louis Chevrolet. Harry was also a yachtsman who actually leased his yacht to the U.S. Navy in World War I and which was credited with sinking three German U-boats. Harry’s father, Lamon Harkness, was one of the largest stockholders in Standard Oil when the Rockefellers were just starting the company. In 1918 Harry purchased the Steinway & Sons Model B grand piano for his lovely second bride, Florence Harkness, as he reportedly enjoyed lavishing her with expensive gifts. Harry had the piano art case contracted to be built by the master

furniture craftsmen of the time, Schmieg/Hungate/Kotzian. Sadly, Harry died of influenza in 1919 in the global disaster of the flu pandemic that swept across the world killing up to 40 million people. Harry was never able to present this spectacular gift to his wife as the art case had not been completed when Harry died. Shortly after his death, the piano was delivered to his wife’s door.

SPONSORCherie Rose of The Rose Collection in Los Gatos was proud to sponsor this concert. As a design and style expert, Cherie knows this piano is a “world-class piece of art.”

EVENT DETAILSThe concert featured Theodora Martin, an 18 year-old piano phenomenon. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Theodora has won numerous national and international competitions, taking first place in many of them. Also performing was the talented Marcia Cope-Hart, soprano, who is currently performing with “Phantom of the Opera” in the Las Vegas spectacular. Marcia has performed with such greats as Luciano Pavarotti, Beverly Sills and Renata Scotto. Kaye Boyler also captivated the audience.

This exquisite piano has been on display at the Rose Collection. For inquires contact Cherie Rose, The Rose Collection at (408) 395-5445.

Holiday Eating by: Lisa Richardson MA, RD

As a Registered Dietitian, I always encourage my clients to eat nutrient dense foods: fresh, unprocessed foods with fibrous carbohydrates, lean proteins, heart healthy fats, along with vitamins and minerals. One of the theories around obesity states that we eat too many highly processed, highly palatable, highly caloric foods. These over engineered products are devoid of

nutrients. The body craves more food in an attempt to get its nutritional needs met. We are overeating and yet “under” nutritioned. Junk food, empty calories, treats... I may surprise you by saying I think every meal plan can have room for some indulgences, and with a little pre planning and creativity, foods that are often considered empty calories can be a healthful part of one’s diet. Pre planning: Find the best ingredients and convenience products available. Use pastured, nitrite-free proteins, and seek out packaged foods with 5 ingredients or less. Avoid the words “partially hydrogenated” and “high fructose corn syrup” on labels. Creativity: By adding good ingredients, there is no guilt in having foods like pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs or even sweets in the APPROPRIATE portion size. For example: Add extra peppers and onions to your thin crust pizza, top a burger or dog with some high fiber chili, choose a small quantity of dessert and add some fresh fruit.

With the Holiday season here, it is important to put perspective on food and remember that traditions around gathering and sharing food are as old as civilization, and the bonding around these rituals is more important than stressing about calories. Here is a mnemonic that may help with being more mindful around holiday eating and drinking:H Have a plan; know when your events are and plan that there will be extra treats added to your diet this time of year. Don’t attend an event hungry.O Opt for your favorite treats only. I can get cheese cubes and crackers anytime, but homemade coconut cake with lemon curd filling only shows up once a year.L Leave early; arrive late. Cocktails+ appetizers+ dinner+ dessert+ coffee can add up to 2-3 days worth of calories; just be polite and let your hostess know ahead.I Intensity of exercise- If you can’t do your usual workout, do a shorter more intense version. For example, add hard cardio intervals to your abbreviated strength workout, or climb stairs for 10 minutes instead of your 30-minute walk.D Decline politely. You do not have to accept every party invitation. You also don’t have to take seconds at every meal. My solution for PSS (pushy stepmother syndrome) is to say that I am totally stuffed with her delicious cooking but that I would love to take some home for another meal.A Avoid liquid calories such as grogs, nogs, smoothies, cocktails, coffee concoctions. These can have up to 700 calories/cup and liquids do not engage the fullness mechanism. Liquid calories sweetened with high fructose corn syrup may inhibit the fullness response even further.Y Yum! Please enjoy your food and have happy healthy holidays!

and doesn’t always involve ‘going abroad.’ Cheryl met with twenty of her lunch-group members the next day and made a well-received proposal to turn their event into something meaningful and not frivolous. Cheryl and Margie Montgomery officially co-chaired the first event. They contacted City Team Ministries in San Jose who in turn recommended that they help Heritage Home— a place for young unwed women and their babies to grow and thrive while restructuring their lives, getting an education or new skill set to put them on a path to success. Thus was the launching of Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause, and although the Heritage Home is their usual focus, they also help others, as Cheryl’s vision is “to help local area charities which assist individuals to help themselves.” For the Heritage Home cause, their donations don’t stop with cash. “Donations are brought to the event by the ladies attending. We are collecting everything from diapers and baby food to cribs and strollers,” adds Cheryl. Conversely, if they see a particularly urgent local need, they are adept enough to change gears and help out. Annually, each Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause board member brings an idea of a charity to the group to be voted upon. The group selects their charities based upon the following criteria: Each charity being considered must have a board of their own and have a 501c3 status. They also must have a primary focus on improving and helping further the lives of women and children in need.

Cheryl Bailey informally launched her ‘stylish witch-hat wearing’ lunch nine years ago, and by 2006 Cheryl formally created the annual event known as “Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause” which was held

in Los Gatos each October, until this year, as the guest list grew so large, it had to be moved downtown. Who would have thought witches would be considered in vogue? That is exactly what Cheryl Bailey has created time and time again, as her heart-warming fundraiser continues to grow. This year, 467 attendees celebrated which allowed the organization to contribute successfully to multiple charities. It is no wonder their success, as speakers lined up at the event, some in tears, letting the attendees know how much this fundraiser has improved their lives. Let’s visit how Cheryl Bailey started this event and who benefited this year. Cheryl Bailey and a growing group of ladies, as many do, met annually for a special lunch. The distinction being that they got together every Fall to make and wear embellished witch hats. Cheryl, a proud wife, mother of three daughters, grandmother of two, moved to Los Gatos in 1980 and enjoyed her home there for ten years. She still lives close by, so when her group of women grew too large to fit in her dining room, after year three, she knew it was time to look elsewhere to host her event, and her first choice was Steamers. At about the same time she began considering a new venue location, Cheryl was moved by a message from (then) Pastor Greg Davis at Saratoga Federated Church. He suggested missionary work could be done in your own backyard

Wonderful Witchy Women would like to thank our wonderful 2012 donors.

Together, we can make a difference in other people’s lives.

2011 Charities- Wonderful Witchy Women with a Cause was proud to add two new charities to their list of beneficiaries:

Angels on Stage – This is a local program which annually places children with all types and degrees of disabilities into a stage production. Angels on Stage serves special needs children in the Bay Area. They were founded in May 2007 to give children with special needs who have abilities of any type and degree, ages 5-22, the opportunity to participate in an annual professional musical theatre production. Many wonderful stage productions have been produced by the volunteers annually giving these children a special role in a play where possibly in a public school they would not have otherwise had the chance. Angels on Stage is named after Angel Ellenberger, who participated as an actress in The Jesters, where her sister & founder of Angels on Stage, DeAnna Pursai, was a college student volunteer. See more at www.angelsonstage.org.

Breakthrough Silicon Valley– This program assists underserved middle schools and high schools to prepare academically motivated students with limited educational opportunities for success in rigorous college-preparatory high school programs and entry into four-year colleges. With the rigorous and careful mentoring programs, many achieve attendance at prestigious local universities such as Stanford and Cal. Learn more at www.breakthroughsv.org.

Heritage Home- Our primary beneficiaryFor pregnant women, homelessness can mean a frustrating search for services for themselves and their unborn children. They move from one shelter to the next. The Heritage Home has been providing a long-term compassionate ministry for years to homeless, poor and abused women who are pregnant and have no where else to turn but the streets. Often these pregnant women who are without food or shelter resort to abortion. In the United States 48% of pregnancies are unintended. Not only are the young women and their babies’ needs attended to, the women are counseled, given parenting classes and are required to further their education with a goal of breaking negative cycles and changing lives for the betterment of both mother and child. The young women are given real hope here for a better life. www.cityteam.org/san-jose/heritage-home

“Everything looks great, and we are very happy with the end result. You’ve delivered on everything we’ve asked for and the results are outstanding.”

Hello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF).

10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN
