In the second year of a new offense, the Broncos look to be settling in with a game plan featuring speed, agility and a balance between passing and running.

The ground game, smash mouth football if you will, has been a trademark of the Broncos for years. Implementing the pistol offense, created by the University of Nevada, Reno’s head coach in 2005, is a departure and utilizes a multi-faceted offense.

Head coach Greg Whitmore remains a fan of the running game and expects the ground assault to ultimately carry the team. At the same time the team is perfecting the new offensive scheme a little more this year, intent on spreading the defense and forcing it to cover a number of threats.

The true intent of the pistol offense is to spread out the defense by using a motion offense. It creates situations where receivers can become lead blockers when the run game goes to the outside. The quarterback typically works from the shotgun, giving him more time to throw and a better opportunity to read defenses.

This year the Broncos will welcome a new quarterback, sophomore Dylan Hartz. Hartz is a second-

year starter, having played as a receiver when he was a freshman. Hartz is an all-around athlete, having proven that last year when he stepped into the role of starting point guard for the varsity basketball team.

While he’s a young player, his football coach believes Hartz has a strong sense of the game and a good understanding of what’s happening as the action unfolds.

“We’re not going to ask him to be as physical as Jake (Eichner) was last year. He won’t take as many hits. But he’s confident, knows how to read defenses and can run the ball really well. And he’ll throw,” Whitmore confirmed. “He’ll spend a lot of time getting Chris (Steinmetz) the ball.”

A senior, Steinmetz checks into a new role as the team’s primary running back. During last Friday’s jamboree he showed a few moves even Whitmore didn’t expect.

“He did some things I’m not used to,” Whitmore said of Steinmetz’s extra efforts. “Some plays are meant for him to run to daylight. Other teams are going to have to key on him. Hopefully he is going to be durable.”

The Broncos will come out well balanced this season and will frequently send players in motion.

“Teams will have to pick their poison,” Whitmore said.

Connor O’Neill, a sophomore will serve as another offensive threat as a running back and wide receiver.

“We’re not going to ask him to run between the tackles,” Whitmore said. “We want to get him outside.”

O’Neill will be dangerous out there. During the jamboree the speedster caught one touchdown pass and ran for another. Whitmore expects teams to ultimately double team O’Neill because of his open field threat.

Jake Dewald and Matt Fryberger will set up as the team’s primary receivers.

Ryan Whitmore will check in as the Z back or tight end. Standing 6 foot 4 inches, Whitmore makes a big target. He will also provide key blocking support for other ball carriers.

The coaching staff likes the offensive mix and Whitmore said he believes the team has a good mix of receivers to bolster the running game and force defenses to be spread a bit thinner than normal.

The key to the offense will be protection for the quarterback and the creation of running lanes for the backs. The linemen will be asked to fulfill that and Whitmore said the line is experienced and up for the task.

Seniors Jesse Miller of Sprague and Brent Stromberger and Palmer Phillips will anchor the line. Phillips will play center with Stromberger at right guard and Miller at right tackle.

On the left side junior Jacob Anderson joins the starting ranks at guard. Sophomore Tyler Frederick makes his first appearance as a starting tackle.

On the defense’s side of the ball the line will feature a four-man front. Stromberger and Steinmetz will take the job of defensive ends.

Grayson Morris and sophomore Jarradd Morley will play defensive tackles.

“Jarradd goes 100 miles an hour and we can’t block him in practice,” Whitmore said of the young starter who enters the game at 6 foot 4 inches and 200 pounds.

The linebackers have big shoes to fill following the graduation of Traven Smith, who dominated at middle linebacker and was an all-state player last summer.

Phillips will move from outside linebacker to the middle spot. Keanu Niezwaag and Miller will fill the outside linebacker assignments.

Playing at the corners will be Fryberger and O’Neill. Hartz and Dewald will drop back deep as the safeties.

Looking at the team as a whole, Whitmore sees room for improvement and a need to do so quickly before facing off against league rivals.

“We will be best against teams who run outside,” he said. “Teams that want to run up the middle, that’s where we have to shore things up.”

The defensive backs and linebackers will have to make big plays. Whitmore said they will need to successfully read plays and get to the right spots. The safeties, he said, will have to help the team on run plays. That can be tricky if they play too soft, misread the offense and then get burned on a deep passing route.

“It all really depends on reading the offense,” Whitmore said.

Looking at the offense, Whitmore said the offense had two fumbles from bad handoffs during the jamboree. Winning

the turnover battle is a key to victory for Whitmore and that’s something he’ll strive to do every game.

Receivers, he said, need to run better routes. They also need to avoid costly penalties. Holding calls and blocks in the back were a problem during the jamboree Whitmore plans to erase.

On defense the Broncos did a great job in their first outing of the season. Whitmore said teams weren’t able to move the ball against them.

This Friday the Broncos open regular season play with a non-league opponent. Warden will travel to Ritzville for a 7 p.m. game.

“They are really good athletes and they have a left-handed quarterback,” Whitmore said. “They spread defenses as much as we do and capitalize on big plays. We have to get a good pass rush and cover them well. Their best athlete is their running back. They will mix it up.”

When the league teams begin doing battle, Colfax is the team in everyone’s sights.

“Until someone beats them, they have swept the league twice, they are the team to beat,” Whitmore said.

Over the past two years the Bulldogs have graduated eight all-state players. Whitmore sees that as helping to level the playing field a bit.

“It’s going to be a dogfight,” he said.Reardan is the other league contender

the Broncos will need to deal with.“They are improved and have more

balanced offense,” he said.The unknown comes to Ritzville

during homecoming week. Kettle Falls has a large turnout of players and is getting better each season.

Liberty, Davenport and Springdale are down this year.

Liberty and Davenport also have new coaches, which could provide surprises for opposing teams.

Whitmore’s goal is to finish in first or second in league to ensure a home field advantage during the crossover game against a District 9 opponent.

If the Broncos finish third or fourth they will face a first round road trip in the playoffs.

There was a hint of excitement in the tone of Coach Jeff Nelson’s voice as he spoke about this year’s Lacrosse-Washtucna Tigercats football program. After two years of rebuilding and struggling through injuries and setbacks, the powerhouse eight-man football team looks to be returning to its winning ways.

“I think we have a competitive team,” he said. “I would be disappointed if we don’t make the playoffs. Most of the starters played as freshmen and sophomores and they have been taking a beating the last couple of years. They have a lot of experience and are bigger, faster, stronger, older and more experienced.”

There’s a message in that statement for other teams. One that should resonate through the ranks of Washington’s eight-man football teams: the Tigercats are back. With a farm truck load of state championship titles under his coaching belt, Nelson has already proven the Tigercats can generate explosive offense and a punishing defense. The team just needs to bring both facets of the

game together this year to overcome a 3-7 record from last season.

The first step in the right direction is the return of Jake Aune at quarterback. Aune suffered a season ending shoulder injury last year. Fortunately it was his non-throwing arm. He has recovered from surgery and is ready to go to work.

“He is a great passer and leader of the team,” Nelson said. “This is his third year starting. He can throw the ball deep and he did on Friday night, right on a target. It was a nice catchable pass. There’s no substitution for what he can give us. And he’s good at reading the defense.”

If opposing defenses plan to contain Aune they will be watching the scoreboard light up in the Tigercats’ favor thanks to a small platoon of running backs.

Sawyer Hostetler, Johnathan Holdren and Matt Stubbs will consume football fields with a voracious appetite for huge running plays. All three are juniors this season.

“The first two are bangers. They hit the whole hard and are our fullback types,” Nelson said. There is no difference between the two. They are athletic and they

like to mix it up and they like to hit. They like to deliver the blow.”

Hostetler will spend some time playing tailback as well.

Stubbs adds a different element to the ground game.“Matt Stubbs is very quick and elusive,” Nelson

said. “That’s the game plan, giving defenses something different to worry about.”

The offensive line has stepped up its game this year. Nelson said the line struggled last season, but expects those days to be over.

“The line improved so much it doesn’t even look the same,” he said. “They are young but again they have experience.”

Center Reese Roberts is a sophomore and has come a long way in one year.

“He’s the most improved over a year ago. He’s a lot bigger and more aggressive. I’m really impressed by him,” Nelson said.

Senior Caleb Haness and sophomore James Hopkins return as starters and they will create opportunities for the offense.

“We don’t have a star player,” Nelson said. “It is move the ball by committee.”

Two tight ends will get the bulk of the receiver work.

Sam Harder and Austin Summers both have great hands and can cover plenty of ground.

Harder is back up quarterback and offers a different wrinkle. Where Aune is a passing machine, Harder can run and create havoc.

“It’s another weapon and another thing the defense has to prepare for,” Nelson said.

Harder gained valuable experience last season while Aune was sidelined by the shoulder injury.

Defensively Nelson said his players have found a rhythm.

“We are athletic,” he said. “We look so much better during practice. The players have said they feel better, feel more confident and they are bigger and more experienced.”

Roberts and Hopkins will fill the defensive end/defensive tackle positions. Haness and Taylor Martin will also see

time in one of those slots. Nelson said Summers is a fifth player capable of providing key playing time on the line for the defense.

Normally, Summers and Holdren will be the linebackers on the field, delivering plenty of hits.

Hostetler, Harder, Stubbs and Aune will patrol the perimeters and shut down passing attacks as defensive backs.

Size will be a contributing factor. At least four of the defenders check in around 6 foot 1 and 185 pounds.

“We have so many complete people,” Nelson said. “It’s not going to be just one guy getting it done.”

Looking over the league, Nelson expects Pomeroy and Garfield-Palouse to be the prime targets. Colton will also be in the running with an impressive passing program. Colton defeated a respectable Wilbur-Creston team last Friday, 80-36.

Last Friday’s opener for the Tigercats ended well with a 40-38 win.

It’s a good first step toward returning to the playoff dominating status the Tigercats came to expect in previous years.

“We’re back in the running for a top place,” Nelson said. “It feels like it has been a long time. It has been two years since we even sniffed the playoffs.”

When the Lady Broncos gathered for the start of volleyball season practice, 42 athletes were in the room. A significant number of players for a program with a brand new head coach — Cari Galbreath.

As the season opens tonight with a home match against Columbia-Burbank, the roster still has 39 active athletes dispersed among three teams. The varsity will carry 13 and looks to have a mixture of experience and youthful enthusiasm.

The team’s returning starters include libero Kaytlin Phillips, Brittany Ste. Marie at outside hitter, Amanda Yockey, right side hitter; Dylan Killian, middle hitter; Andrea Bennett, outside hitter; and Davi Killian, middle hitter.

The new faces on varsity are Micheala Doyle, defensive specialist; Jenna Bennett, setter; Maya Wahl, outside hitter; Sydney Nelson, setter; Amber Rodriguez, outside hitter; Lexi Whitaker, defensive specialist and Mackenzie Ellis, right side hitter.

Galbreath has served as assistant volleyball coach for the Lady Broncos and has a pretty good idea where the league threats will come from. First and foremost will be Reardan, the defending state champions. On the Lady Indian’s heels will be the perennial powerhouse Colfax Lady Bulldogs.

“I’m optimistic,” Galbreath said. “I think we can be right up there.”

Galbreath has played the sport at almost every level from club ball to high school and on to collegiate play. Over the

years she has learned that volleyball is as much mental as it is physical.

“Anybody can have a bad night,” she said. “Volleyball is a sport where the game can change quick. It’s a battle of momentum.”

The mental aspect of the game contributes to a team’s ability to recover when the scoring pendulum swings and they find themselves on their heels as an opponent makes a charge. Strengthening the Lady Broncos’ mental game is part of Galbreath’s focus.

“It starts in practice,” she said of mental strengthening. “The regimen of practice, making them work through different situations while staying focused is important. I tell them that every ball is an opportunity.”

Galbreath is also using her coaching

opportunity to instill life skills, the skills that are helpful during the match and last after an athlete’s volleyball career is over.

“A big part of my coaching philosophy is life skills,” she said. “Each player has a role on the team. Some crush the ball and some are behind the scenes and they have to own up to that role and fulfill it to the best of their potential. I tell them that in life they will have different roles too.”

The starters bring a mix of talent, enthusiasm and athleticism and Galbreath expects them to deliver wins throughout the season as they hone their game.

Working in the middle of the front row will be a pair of sisters. The Killians will trade off and bring a notable amount of height and experience to the game.

“They are extremely tall and pretty good offensively,” Galbreath said. “They have a lot of experience and this is their opportunity to excel.”

Galbreath said she sees both players as fairly equal. While Davis has improved her power, Dalyn may have the better vertical leap. After that, they both deliver comparable performances.

Davi, along with Andrea Bennett, will serve as the team captains.

Working from the role of libero is Phillips.“She is super balanced, very agile on the court. She

has a great ability to read the ball,” Galbreath said.Ste. Marie brings a certain amount of stability on the

floor.“She is very poised, a controlled player who is

reliable and confident,” Galbreath said.Yockey could put on a defensive show of her own at

the net.“She has great vertical and is pretty athletic,”

Galbreath said. “She is going to be great as one of our blockers.”

Bennett is vision of consistency.“She has energy and is experienced and

hardworking,” Galbreath said. “I know she is going to hit the ball over the net. She wants to kill that ball.”

With two setters, Galbreath has options as a coach. As a setter in college, she has an acute awareness of the value of the position.

Nelson will start and provide consistent play.“She has great hands and is very natural.” Galbreath

said.Jenna Bennett, Andrea’s sister, is an up and coming

freshman volleyball player.“She is pretty athletic with a natural ability,”

Galbreath said. “She can get to the ball and deliver it to somebody.”

Wahl will help bring up the game energy.“I want her on the outside. She’s very intense and

one of those go-getters,” Galbreath said.The remainder of the roster will fill situational roles

and provide support from the bench.“They will be good support for sure and definitely

build up their teammates,” Galbreath added.
