The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center celebrates the leg-acy of perseverance, courage, and multicultural cooperation embod-ied in the dramatic saga of the Underground Railroad in the years leading up to the Civil War.

Of equal importance, the Freedom Center uses exhibits and pro-grams to educate the public about the historic and continuing struggle to establish universal freedom in both the United States and around the world.

Our MissionWe reveal stories about Freedom’s heroes, from the era of the Underground Railroad to contemporary times, challenging and inspiring everyone to take courageous steps for freedom today.

EducationThe Freedom Center Education Department brings the stories of the Underground Railroad to life for thousands of students each year. Programs include curriculum based tours that meet state and national standards, pre-visit, post visit and in-gallery lessons for students and teachers, and digital learning experiences. A Freedom Center visit will unlock American history and excite your students for years to come.

ExhibitionsESCAPE! Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad concentrates on the period between 1830 and 1865, and focuses on the brave and clever actions of men and women who resisted slavery.

Brothers of the Borderland immerses guests in a thrilling flight to freedom, showcasing the courage and cooperation of John Parker and Rev. John Rankin as they aid a woman risking all to flee slavery.

The Slave Pen, built in the early 1800's, was recovered from a farm in Mason County, KY, less than 60 miles from the Freedom Center.

From Slavery to Freedom portrays three centuries of slavery from its introduction into the Americas to its abolition at the end of the American Civil War.

Invisible: Slavery Today offers a comprehensive examination of slav-ery in the modern world, explores the causes of slavery, the eco-nomic forces that have contributed to its growth, and the response of government, the justice system and the general public.

Everyday Freedom Heroes celebrates individuals from all walks of life whose extraordinary choices at key moments paralleled the coura-geous actions taken by participants on the Underground Railroad.

Did You Know?The Freedom Center reaches 1.3 million students annually through digital learning inititatives.

The Freedom Center’s digital curriculum is utilized by Chicago and Baltimore public schools and in select suburban Atlanta school districts.

The Freedom Center hosts monthly programming that includes teacher workshops, lectures, films and family activities.

The Freedom Center offers a variety of programs for visitors and members throughout the year. The Workshop Series allows partici-pants to engage with Freedom Center staff and community leaders in a hands-on environment, with topics ranging from Family History to photography. Several times a year, enjoy a fascinating film with the opportunity for discussion afterwards at the Film Series. The Speaker Series brings together some of the foremost authorities in the country to discuss topics in history and things happening today. For some family fun, don't miss our bi-monthly family activi-ties! Dramatic readings, storytellings, crafts, there's something here for people of all ages.

The Freedom Center’s Digital Learning Environment immerses students and teachers in a media-rich, technology driven, global classroom.

Digital Backpack ClassroomThe Freedom Center’s Digital Backpack Classroom is a one-of-a-kind digital teaching and learning experience for students and teachers. It provides training in the latest techniques for creative expression and digital publishing across standards-based curricular areas. This experience is great for all levels of technology experience, and perfect for STEM instruction. Participants embrace social network-ing technology and digital media production to incorporate 21st Century Skills for creation, innovation and digital citizenship. The end product is a user-generated, video documentary that answers the question, What Is Freedom? Advanced reservations are required for scheduling. Digital MediaThe National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Digital Media project supplements standards-based instruction with classroom access to over 30 hours of digital video scholarship and commen-tary about key facts, thematic issues and enduring lessons taken from freedom struggles, past and present. These titles will excite and inspire your next social studies, history, civics, and global issues learning activity. Teacher Resource Center

Historical Re-EnactorsThe Freedom Center’s historical re-enactors promote the history of the African American experience. Our re-enactments embody the heritage and culture of the enslaved. Our mission is to educate and inspire through the rich tradition of storytelling. We make the necessary effort to preserve the human experience of the enslaved and enlighten all people of a history that is often overlooked and undertold. Through our voices we offer respect and honor to those who endured the struggles of slavery.

Contract Fees:$200 per Re-enactor (within in the Greater Cincinnati)$250 per Re-enactor (outside the Greater Cincinnati)Plus lodging/meals/travel costs

There are additional fees for re-enactments that exceed 60 minutes in length.

Schedule A School Visit

Journey to Freedom Tour (Grades K – 2)This 90-minute tour will take students through galleries and exhib-its on our second floor. The tour explores historical examples of COOPERATION and PERSEVERANCE while integrating the past with the present through songs and storytelling.

The North Star (Grades 3 – 4)This two hour tour will take students on a journey back in time to the Underground Railroad. They will see how the North Star assisted the Freedom Seekers on their journey to freedom. They will actively learn about the abolitionists and conductors of the Underground Railroad.

Early America: Geography, Economics and Slavery (Grades 5 – 8)This two hour tour is designed for students to take an in-depth look at the economic impact of slavery in the United States, as well as examine the geographical effects of both the transatlantic and internal slave trades. Students will handle objects and artifact reproductions.

The Coming of the Civil War (Grades 5 - 8)This two hour tour will explore the coming of the Civil War especial-ly pertaining to the role of slavery in dividing the nation. Students will experience a deep immersion in the From Slavery to Freedom Gallery and learn about the major historical figures and events that led to the bloodiest war in our nation’s history.

Resistance: “Unfreedoms,” Past and Present (Grades 8 – 12)This two hour tour incorporates world history, geography, and American history to tell the story of global slavery. Students will learn about the Abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad, and how these examples of activism were used to end slavery in the United States. These stories of the past serve as the springboard for exploring contemporary issues of “Unfreedom” and suggest ways in which students can take an active role in saying “no” to racism and “yes” to helping others.
