RAM CHARAN Business Advisor, Author, and BusinessWeek “Top 10 Resource”Ram Charan is a highly sought after business advisor and speaker famous among senior

executives for his uncanny ability to solve their toughest business problems. For more

than 35 years, Dr. Charan has worked behind the scenes with top executives at some

of the world’s most successful companies, including GE, Verizon, Novartis, Dupont,

Thomson Corporation, Honeywell, KLM, Bank of America, and MeadWestvaco. He has

shared his insights with many others through teaching and writing. Dr. Charan is well

known for providing advice that is down to earth and relevant and that takes into account

the real-world complexities of business. Among his recommendations for achieving

profitable growth, for example, are to search for “singles and doubles” as well as home

runs and to develop what he calls a “growth budget” to instill discipline on growth initia-

tives. Identified by Fortune as the leading expert in corporate governance, Dr. Charan is

helping boards go beyond the requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley and the New York Stock

Exchange by providing practical ways to improve their group dynamics. Boards, CEOs,

and senior-most human resource executives often seek his advice on talent planning

and key hires. Over the past decade, Dr. Charan has captured his business insights in

numerous books and articles. In the past five years, Dr. Charan’s books have sold more

than 2 million copies. These include the best-seller Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done and Confronting Reality, both co-authored with

Larry Bossidy, What the CEO Wants You to Know, Boards at Work, Every Business Is a Growth Business, Profitable Growth, and Boards That Deliver.

A frequent contributor to Fortune, Dr. Charan has written two cover stories, “Why CEOs Fail” and “Why Companies Fail.” His other articles have

appeared in the Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, Director’s Monthly, and Strategy and Business.

MARK SHIELDS National Political Commentator and Columnist The Wall Street Journal has called Mark

Shields “the wittiest political analyst

around” and “frequently the most

trenchant, fair-minded, and thought-

ful.” The Washington Post has called Shields “a walking almanac

of American politics.” His insights are first-hand and up to-the

minute, drawn from four decades of knowing, covering and savor-

ing the country and its politics. A nationally known columnist and

commentator, Shields has worked in Washington during the ad-

ministrations of nine U.S. Presidents. He began writing his column

in 1979 while working as an editor at The Washington Post, and

is currently a regular panelist on Inside Washington, PBS’ weekly

public affairs show.

CAL RIPKEN, JR. Baseball’s Iron Man and Hall of Famer Cal Ripken is baseball’s all-time “Iron Man.” He re-

tired from baseball in October 2001 after 21 seasons

with the Baltimore Orioles. His name appears in the

record books repeatedly, most notably as one of only

eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and

3,000 hits. In 1995, Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games

played (2,130), and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 with

the third highest percentage of votes in history. Ripken’s name has become

synonymous with strength, character, endurance, and integrity. His philosophy

of working hard, playing with passion, and enjoying the game has made a

tremendous impact on the sport, and on fans everywhere. He is the author of

Get in the Game: 8 Elements of Perseverance That Make the Difference (2007),

a guidebook for success using Ripken’s techniques for working hard and

staying focused.

mist’s economic editor, overseeing the

prestigious publication’s coverage of

ing globalization. Minton-Beddoes is a regular commentator on

Marketplace (NPR). She is a trustee of the Carnegie Endow-

ment for International Peace and a member of the Research

Advisory Board of the Committee for Economic Development.

PETER LEYDEN Leading Expert on Megatrends and New TechnologyPeter Leyden deeply understands the technology

and new media, having served as managing edi-

tor of Wired magazine, which helped introduce the

world to the digital revolution and demonstrated

the viability of the internet as a platform for journalism. Out of that experi-

ence, he co-authored the book The Long Boom, a History of the Future,

1980-2020, which was translated into half a dozen languages. This com-

bined with other entrepreneurial ventures make him the perfect person to pro-
