MEN’S HOCKEY OVERVIEW

February 12-18, 2011 Halifax Metro Centre & Dartmouth Sportsplex – Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

FORMAT

Three pools of four teams each. Each team plays three preliminary games, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the Qualifying Round. There is a qualification round to make it to the placement round. Teams then advance to the quarter-finals either through the placement round or seedings in group play. Once the teams advance from the quarter-finals they then advance to the medal games.

Age of athletes: Players who are under 16 years of age as of December 31, 2010 are eligible. Year of Birth: 1995 Teams: Maximum of 20 players Canada Winter Games are held every four years. The men’s hockey event is held at the Canada Winter Games as an under-16 event. In years past the event has been in place of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

VUE D’ENSEMBLE DU HOCKEY MASCULIN

Du 12-18 février 2011 Metro Centre et Sportsplex de Dartmouth – Halifax et Dartmouth, Nouvelle-Écosse

STRUCTURE

Trois groupes de quatre équipes chacun. Chaque équipe prend part à trois matchs en ronde préliminaire et les deux meilleures équipes de chaque groupe accèdent à la ronde de qualification. Il y a une ronde de qualification pour la ronde de classement. Les équipes accèdent ensuite aux quarts de finale soit par la ronde de classement ou leur classement au sein de leur groupe. Les équipes qui gagnent leur match de quart de finale se qualifient ensuite pour la ronde des médailles.

ALBERTA SELECTION Alberta’s Canada Winter Games team is comprised of the top under-16 aged athletes in the province. One hundred and sixty athletes attended the regional camps in May. After that, the top 48 athletes were selected to attend the provincial camp in July. After selecting the top 33 from the provincial camp, the athletes were evaluated on their club teams from September to November determining Team Alberta’s final roster of 20. Team Alberta is a well-rounded team with 20 players that will contribute equally in the Games. The team has come together quickly with blend of size and strength, combined with speed and skill. Alberta will look to continue its tradition of excellence at the Canada Winter Games. It has medalled in five straight Canada Winter Games. The coaching staff is confident it has put together a team that can be successful in a short-term competition.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE ALBERTA L’équipe de l’Alberta pour les Jeux d’hiver du Canada est formée des meilleurs athlètes de moins de 16 ans de la province. Cent soixante joueurs ont été invités aux camps régionaux en mai. Après ces camps, les 48 meilleurs athlètes ont été invités au camp provincial en juillet. Les 33 meilleurs joueurs du camp provincial ont ensuite été évalués au sein de leur équipe de club de septembre à novembre dans le but de déterminer les 20 joueurs qui allaient représenter l’Alberta. Équipe Alberta est bien équilibrée et les 20 joueurs vont contribuer également aux Jeux. L’esprit d’équipe s’est installé rapidement au sein de la formation qui allie gabarit et force, vitesse et habiletés. L’Alberta voudra défendre sa tradition d’excellence aux Jeux d’hiver du Canada. La province a obtenu une médaille lors de cinq Jeux d’hiver du Canada consécutifs. Le personnel d’entraîneurs a rassemblé une équipe qui peut connaître du succès dans un tournoi se déroulant sur une courte période.

B.C. SELECTION

The BC Hockey High Performance U16 Program is designed as an introduction to BC Hockey’s High Performance Program, exposing players, coaches and officials to short term competition. The under-16 program also acts as a precursor to the BC Hockey High Performance U17 Program, which is used to identify and train players and team personnel for provincial, regional and national teams. The players were evaluated during the first three months of the season and selected from the 33 short-listed following the Male U16 Provincial Camp in July. Team BC had a Christmas camp, December 20-22 in Richmond, including an exhibition game against the Valley West Hawks in preparation for the Canada Winter Games.

Le programme de haute performance des moins de 16 ans de Hockey C.-B. est une initiation au programme de haute performance des moins de 16 ans de Hockey C.-B, faisant vivre aux joueurs, entraîneurs et officiels une compétition de courte durée. MANITOBA SELECTION

The U16 program began back in February 2010 with regional selection camps held across the province. The selection process then continued with the POE Spring Tournament, POE Summer Camp, and final selections were decided through scouting this fall. The U17 process began at the POE Summer Camp and final rosters decisions were also decided through scouting this fall. The Canada Winter Games are held every four years and will feature the country’s top 1995-born players. Team Manitoba is led by head coach Troy Leslie (Melita), along with assistant coaches Royce Manary (Winnipeg) and Blaine Boyle (Portage la Prairie). Team Manitoba enters the Canada Winter Games ranked No. 2 based on final results from the previous Canada Winter Games (silver medalists - Whitehorse 2007).

NEW BRUNSWICK SELECTION

The Team New Brunswick coaching staff began the process working with these young athletes during the under-14 and under-15 process, capturing a silver medal at both Atlantic Challenge Cups. This year’s program began with 56 players attending an invitation-only identification camp for all players playing Bantam AAA and some AA kids during the 2009-10 season in Grand Falls, N.B. The camp selection committee identified 44 players to take part in the Hockey Development Festival in Fredericton. On Labor Day weekend in Rothesay, N.B., the selection committee worked with 28 players, including two underage players brought into the process. Team New Brunswick played two exhibition games with the Saint John Vitos Midget AAA team. Team New Brunswick took 24 players including two underage players to the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton, winning its third silver medal, losing to Nova Scotia in the gold medal game. The coaching staff tracked the remaining 24 players and selected Team New Brunswick after the Monctonian Major Midget tournament on November 22.

Le personnel d’entraîneurs d’Équipe N.-B. a débuté son processus avec ces jeunes athlètes avec le programme des M14 et des M15, qui ont remporté une médaille d’argent à la Coupe défi Atlantique. NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR SELECTION

The selection process for Team Newfoundland & Labrador took place over a three-year period. The coaching staff was announced in early 2008 with a three-year mandate to evaluate players throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in preparation for the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Starting with the 2008-09 season, players were invited to regional zone camps across the province. From these camps, select players were invited to the provincial camp held in August 2008. After this camp, an under-14 provincial team was announced to compete in the Atlantic Challenge Cup (ACC) held each Thanksgiving weekend in Moncton, N.B. In 2009, the coaching staff evaluated the under-15 provincial team and in 2010 it finished with the under-16 team; each year representing the province at the ACC. There were changes to the provincial teams over the three years and in November 2010, the final roster for the 2011 Canada Winter Games was announced.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE TERRE-NEUVE-ET-LABRADOR Le processus de sélection de l’équipe masculine de T.-N.-L. s’est déroulé sur une période de trois ans. Le personnel d’entraîneurs a été formé au début de l’année 2008 pour lui donner un mandat de trois ans pour évaluer les joueurs à travers la province de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador en vue des Jeux d’hiver du Canada 2011. Lors de la saison 2008, les joueurs ont été invités à des camps régionaux dans la province. En 2009, le personnel d’entraîneurs a évalué l’équipe provinciale des M15 et en 2010, il a fait de même avec la formation des M16, qui représente la province chaque année à la Coupe défi Atlantique. Des changements ont été apportés aux équipes provinciales au cours des trois années et en novembre 2010, l’équipe masculine de hockey de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador pour les Jeux d’hiver du Canada 2011 a été annoncée.

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES SELECTION

Team NWT’s male hockey program began its selection process by playing host to regional identification camps in Inuvik, Hay River and Yellowknife. The top prospects were then invited to a central camp in Yellowknife where the top 23 players were selected to continue competing for the final roster spots. Additional practices and exhibition series through the fall of 2010 gave the coaching staff its last look at the players. For the majority of our players, this will be the highest competition they will play and some will advance to a higher level. Our team will display good work ethic and sportsmanship. We see the Canada Winter Games as an excellent opportunity for our athletes to gain both experience and exposure of playing in a highly competitive environment.

Le programme de hockey masculin d’Équipe T.-N.-L. a entrepris son processus de sélection en tenant trois camps régionaux à Inuvik, Hay River et Yellowknife. Les meilleurs espoirs ont été invités à un camp central à Yellowknife à l’issue duquel les 23 meilleurs joueurs ont été choisis pour tenter de se tailler une place au sein de la formation. Des séances d’entraînement supplémentaires et des parties hors concours à l’automne 2010 ont permis au personnel d’entraîneurs de porter une dernière évaluation sur leurs joueurs. Pour la plupart de nos joueurs, cet événement sera la plus importante compétition à laquelle ils vont prendre part et certains accéderont à un niveau supérieur. Notre équipe fera preuve d’une bonne éthique de travail et d’esprit sportif. Nous considérons les Jeux d’hiver du Canada comme une excellente occasion qui permettra à nos athlètes de faire l’expérience d’un milieu où la compétition sera vive.

NOVA SCOTIA SELECTION

Players entered the Hockey Nova Scotia High Performance Program in the spring of 2008 in the under-14 division. One hundred and thirty players were invited to three-day provincial camp with 46 players moving onto a summer camp before 20 players were selected to attend the 2008 Atlantic Challenge Cup. In the spring of 2010, 90 players came to the male under-16 spring camp, with 50 moving onto a three-day June camp. From the June camp, 40 players attended a five-day summer camp, with 23 players moving onto the 2010 Atlantic Challenge Cup, after which the Canada Games team was selected.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE NOUVELLE-ÉCOSSE

La première étape de la sélection des joueurs d’Équipe Nouvelle-Écosse a eu lieu au printemps 2008 dans la catégorie des M14. 130 joueurs ont été invités à un camp provincial de 3 jours. 46 joueurs ont ensuite pris part au camp d’été avant que 20 jeunes soient sélectionnés pour participer à la compétition masculine des M14 de la Coupe défi Atlantique. Au printemps 2010, 90 joueurs ont pris part au camp printanier de hockey masculin des M16. Ensuite, 50 joueurs ont été choisis pour participer à un camp de 3 jours en juin. Après cet événement, 40 patineurs se sont réunis pour un camp estival de 5 jours. 23 joueurs ont pris part à la Coupe défi Atlantique 2010. À l’issue de cette compétition, l’équipe des Jeux du Canada a été formée.

ONTARIO SELECTION This summer each member partner got together and held training camps to assemble teams to participate in a showcase in mid-August at the Kitchener Auditorium. Prior to the August showcase Team OMHA, GTHL and Alliance all played an exhibition game against Team Quebec, which travelled to Ontario to compete against the three teams. Team OMHA, GTHL, ODMHA, NOHA, Alliance and HNO assembled teams to compete in the August showcase hosted by Alliance Hockey. Each team played in six games over four days having Team OMHA facing off against Team GTHL in the final. From this showcase a short list was formed and the director of operations continued to monitor the progress of players throughout the province by attending league games and tournaments. Team Ontario was announced in early January and a one-day training camp was scheduled before the team departed for the Canada Winter Games.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE ONTARIO Cet été, tous les membres de l’équipe se sont réunis pour tenir des camps d’entraînement servant à former des clubs qui ont participé à une démonstration à la mi-août à l’auditorium de Kitchener. Avant cet événement, les équipes de l’OMHA, de la GTHL et d’Alliance ont joué des matchs hors concours face à Équipe Québec qui avait fait le voyage en Ontario pour affronter les trois formations au cours de la fin de semaine. Les équipes de l’OMHA, la GTHL, l’ODMHA, la NOHA, l’Alliance et de HNO ont formé des équipes pour compétitionner à la démonstration du mois d’août, organisée par Alliance Hockey. Chaque formation a pris part à six matchs qui ont eu lieu en quatre jours. Équipe OMHA a affronté Équipe GTHL en finale. Une courte liste a ensuite été formée et le directeur des opérations a continué d’évaluer le progrès des joueurs à travers la province en assistant à des matchs et des tournois des ligues. Équipe Ontario a été dévoilée au début du mois de janvier et un camp d’entraînement d’un jour a été prévu avant que l’équipe ne parte pour les Jeux d’hiver du Canada.

Team Prince Edward Island was selected by scouting the N.B./P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey Legaue and POE camps held on Prince Edward Island. Team P.E.I. played in the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton along with exhibition games with PE.I. Midget AAA teams and the Rothesay (N.B.) School boys team, capturing bronze at the Atlantic Challenge Cup.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE ÎLE-DU-PRINCE-ÉDOUARD Équipe Î.-P.-É. a été sélectionnée grâce au recrutement dans la Ligue midget majeur et les camps du Programme d’excellence qui ont eu lieu à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. QUEBEC SELECTION Scouting for the under-16 selection started by selecting 57 players to participate in two tournaments at the Midget Espoir level. Of this group, 10 additional players, who already played at the Espoir and Midget AAA level during the 2009-10 season, were included. A five-day camp in July 2010 helped to select 30 players to compete against several Ontario teams. From the beginning of the Midget AAA season, the players were followed on a regular basis from August until December, when 26 players were invited to participate in the final selection process, which was a Midget AAA tournament in Gatineau. The 20 players on the Team Québec roster are all from the Québec Midget AAA Development League.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE QUÉBEC

La sélection des joueurs d’Équipe Québec des M16 a débuté par le regroupement de 57 joueurs de 14 ans, pour participer aux deux tournois du niveau midget Espoir. À ce nombre, 10 joueurs qui évoluaient déjà au niveau Espoir et midget AAA depuis le début de la saison 2009-2010 se sont ajoutés. Un camp de 5 jours en juillet 2010 a permis de sélectionner 30 joueurs pour une tournée en Ontario. Après le début de saison des équipes midget AAA, les joueurs ont été suivis sur une base régulière du mois d’août à décembre. 26 d’entre eux ont ensuite été invités à participer à la dernière étape de sélection qui a été un tournoi midget AAA à Gatineau. Les 20 joueurs qui composent Équipe Québec proviennent de la Ligue de développement Midget AAA du Québec.

SASKATCHEWAN SELECTION Team Saskatchewan was selected based on the SaskFirst program, which is operated by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. The objective of the SaskFirst program is to provide an opportunity for athletes, coaches and officials to showcase their talents in a competitive atmosphere. The program provides all second-year Bantam male players from around Saskatchewan the opportunity to compete against their peers.

Forty players are identified and invited to the SaskFirst Summer Camp. The 40 players are joined by 40 others who were identified at last year’s SaskFirst event. From the evaluations at summer camp, along with further evaluation with the players’ club teams, we identify the top 20 players.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE SASKATCHEWAN

Équipe Saskatchewan est choisie selon le programme SaskFirst géré par l’Association de hockey de la Saskatchewan. L’objectif du programme est d’offrir la chance aux athlètes, entraîneurs et officiels de faire valoir leur talent dans un milieu de compétition. Le programme permet à tous les joueurs de la Saskatchewan qui en sont à leur deuxième année bantam de se mesurer à leurs pairs. Quarante joueurs sont ensuite choisis et invités au camp estival de Sask First. Les 40 joueurs y retrouvent 40 autres joueurs choisis lors du tournoi SaskFirst de l’année précédente. À l’aide des évaluations effectuées au camp estival auprès des équipes de clubs, les 20 meilleurs joueurs ont été sélectionnés. .

YUKON SELECTION

The process for selection was a preliminary identification camp held for all interested Yukoners in late April 2010. Ice time was made available in the summer for interested skaters and a selection camp for 24 players was held over a weekend in September. Selection at the camp was led by independent evaluator Wade Klippenstein of the Prince George Cougars who has continued as an integral part of the advisory group. The 24 players named to the development team played individually on their Whitehorse Mustangs rep hockey teams and participated as a team in an exhibition series in Alberta in October and in the Richmond International Midget Tournament from December 26-31. Participation and play in these tournaments assisted in the determination of the final team named January 7, 2011.

SÉLECTION D’ÉQUIPE YUKON Dans le cadre du processus de sélection, un camp préliminaire d’orientation a été organisé à la fin du mois d’avril 2010 pour tous les joueurs du Yukon intéressés. Ils ont pu se réunir à nouveau à l’été et un camp de sélection de 24 joueurs a ensuite été tenu durant une fin de semaine de septembre. Le recrutement au camp a été mené par un évaluateur indépendant, Wade Klippenstein, des Cougars de Prince George qui a continué de jouer un rôle au sein du groupe consultatif. Les 24 joueurs nommés au sein de l’équipe de développement ont joué chacun de leur côté dans leur équipe de hockey double lettre des Mustangs de Whitehorse. Ils se sont ensuite réunis pour des matchs hors concours en Alberta en octobre et pour le tournoi international de hockey midget de Richmond, du 26 au 31 décembre. Ces tournois ont permis de déterminer la formation finale qui a été dévoilée le 7 janvier 2011.
