Mike and Ryan will partner with you to answer any

questions and help you prepare for your adventure.

They will also guide you through the acceptance

process. All potential campers need to interview

with us and supply two references to be considered

for the program. Parents will be interviewed also to

ensure a positive and cohesive group.

- BOLD EARTH REFERENCES: We are happy to provide

you with references from former campers and

leaders from any of our trips or regions.

- TRIP DETAILS: Go to www.boldearth.com to view

day-to-day highlights and camper blogs from any

of our trips.

Dani’s Bold Earth trip far exceeded any

of our expectations. She was elated the

entire trip, challenged, nurtured and cared

for. Both the counselors and kids, without

exception, made this the best summer of her

life. T he independence and confidence gained

from putting herself out of her comfort

zone did wonders for her. She returned with

closer bonds to her new friends than she

has with friends of many years. She adored

every aspect of the program and we would

not change a single component of what you do.

T hank you!

Dear Abbott

AND the bold earth TEam,

Dear Friends of bold earth,

HOMETOWN: Golden, Colorado

WHY BOLD EARTH? Abbott founded Bold Earth because he believes summer is an essential time of year to take a big break from school and jobs while recharging our energy away from familiar routines. Plus, working with teens and being at the helm of a business that does so much good is a privilege each and every day.

TRIPS LED: Bold Earth has given me to the opportunity to visit all 50 states plus 47 countries around the world. My hope is to add to my list because exploring our earth with friends and families is the most enjoyable activity I know of.

EUROPEAN LEADERS

Bold Earth is a 24/7 partnership between campers and adult leaders setting out on an adventure of a lifetime. Our professional mentors are devoted to bringing out the best in our teens and are the stewards of our standards. They are the ones on the front lines initiating the safety, fun, and challenges of Bold Earth.

Bold Earth awards its leaders with generous pay and benefits, consistent support and superior training. And they love their jobs! Leaders commit 110% of themselves to adventure travel guardianship with teenagers for an additional reward of a healthier world. Abbott Wallis, the

founder of Bold Earth, is personally involved in hiring, training and overseeing every employee of our company. When you have a question or concern, you’ll deal with Abbott.

Bold Earth selects adult leaders who will enhance our solid, hard-won reputation for excellence; leaders who are role models with extensive experience working with teenagers. Our trip leaders are certified in the highest levels of wilderness first aid, CPR and lifeguard training. All trips include one male and one female trip leader who are at least 21 years old, with the average age being 26. Our hiring

process is competitive, resulting in what we believe to be the most professional, safe and experienced staff in the industry. Over half of our leaders return for multiple trips.

We do extensive background checks and conduct in-depth interviews with all potential trip leaders. We hire people with organizational skills, a sense of humor and the ability to teach teenagers about core values. On most international trips we also employ a local guide fluent in the local language and culture.

BOLD EARTH EXPECTATIONSAt Bold Earth, we expect and enforce discipline, but we’re not a boot camp. Bold Earth is NOT designed to correct behavior; we are a haven of adventure, respect, trust and responsibility. The vast majority of teens who go on our trips enjoy the experience and are respectful of our necessary rules. Those who don’t are dismissed. Our “Participant Unity Agreement” clearly defines the boundaries and expectations of our community.

We begin our Big Island adventure on the

legendary Kona Coast where we learn the art of

surfing from professional guides. After mastering

Hawaii’s most fa

mous pastime, we sea kayak to

hidden sea caves, paddle beside giant sea turtles,

and snorkel among vibrant coral reefs and exotic

marine life.

Our Pacific Ocean adventures continue as we

harness the winds of the Kohala Coast and sail

alongside spinner dolphins. Topping it all,

Hawaiian natives teach us the ancient island

sport of outrigger canoeing.

Our service project and cultural

exchange takes place in the

historic Waipio Valley,

where a native

Hawaiian family shares its

traditions and beautiful

rustic home. From Waipio, we load up our packs

for a three-day backpacking trip on the mythical

Muliwai Trail. Our challenging hike leads through

lush rain forest to the secluded Waimanu Valley,

ripe with mango trees, towering waterfalls and the

island’s longest black sand beach.

Finally, we marvel at the awesome power of

Mother Nature in Volcanoes National Park. After

a day of biking around an active volcano, we

hike to the coast to witness m

olten lava flowing

into the Pacific Ocean

and take part in an

can’t stop talking about her experience

and how much she misses it. It has been

the most incredible experience for her and

she can’t wait to go on future trips with

Bold Earth again!

- Dianna and Michael Feldman

KAYAK SCHOOL: Our kayak instruction begins in a lake and heated pool where we learn how to wet exit, roll, paddle, read rivers, surf waves and successfully navigate rapids. This trip is designed for first-timers and experienced paddlers. The scenery is awesome, the challenges are intense, and paddling Class II and III rapids is sweet. A support raft carries our gear, and we camp under the stars on the banks of the Arkansas River.

ROCK-CLIMBING SCHOOL: Test your limits in the perfect place to take your first rock-climbing lesson, or to master more advanced techniques. Certified instructors teach us essential knots, basic climbing techniques and safety principles.

An action-filled adventure tour of the British Isles that includes Dublin, London, nature, history and culture.

We set out on a two-day horseback ride through the mountains around Tipperary and spend a night in a 300-year-old Irish castle. On our way to Connemara we visit the Cliffs of Moher, 600 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Our final adventure is a two-day exploration of London’s history, heritage and culture, including Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Piccadilly Circus. After picking up a souvenir or two on Oxford Street, we head home with new friends and our memories of the British Isles.

Next, we travel to the beautiful city of Cuzco to experience the markets and nightlife, as well as participate in a service project with local street children. Near Cuzco, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, we enjoy the adrenaline rush of mountain biking surrounded by Incan ruins and

snow-capped Andean peaks. From Cuzco we trek three days through the ancient Sacred Valley in the footsteps of the Incas, soak in the natural Andean hot springs and visit the forgotten city of Machu Picchu.

On the vast and magical Lake Titicaca, we stay with local families and install chimneys in their homes to provide ventilation and prevent respiratory problems in the community. After our hard work, the locals treat us to a soccer match and an evening party complete with traditional music and dancing!

Our final adventure is a surf camp on the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Outside of Lima, we receive one-on-one professional surf instruction and enjoy waves suitable for any ability level. Surfing and relaxing on the beach is the ideal way to complete our journey together in this extraordinary country.

Page 17: 2011 Brochure

WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE COVERAGE IS PROVIDED BY BOLD EARTH? DO YOU PROVIDE MEDICAL COVERAGE? The following are descriptions of three types of insurance for Bold Earth campers:

1. OPTIONAL TUITION INSURANCE This insurance is highly recommended and can be purchased directly from Bold Earth to guarantee your tuition against ANYTHING not covered by other insurance AT ANY TIME, with one exception. Campers sent home for alcohol, tobacco, drugs or weapons are not eligible for a refund even if optional tuition insurance was purchased.

2. TRAVEL INSURANCE This insurance is included in your tuition for all students traveling outside of the USA, in their own name to protect against uncovered, major medical injuries and evacuation.

3. MEDICAL INSURANCE All participants are required to carry their own medical insurance. Check with your carrier to make sure coverage is in effect while on vacation. Medical or dental treatment will be accessed in a reasonable amount of time at the nearest facility. Payment for treatment or emergency transport is the responsibility of your insurance company or family.

WHAT ABOUT SAFETY CONCERNS? There are inherent risks with all adventure activities. But at Bold Earth, safety is our primary concern. Since 1976, we have successfully taken responsibility for the health and well-being of thousands of teens with no major injuries.

WHAT ARE YOUR SAFETY STANDARDS? We are certified by all state and local agencies and accredited by the American Camp Association. We have voluntarily met or exceeded over 300 standards, including leader qualifications, first aid, emergency procedures, vehicle safety, etc.

IS BOLD EARTH COOL? This question is best answered by people who have gone on trips with us—so call our references to find out exactly what makes us so cool. The Bold Earth way of life is a perfect balance of maturity and fun. Teenagers repeatedly tell us that the friendships, activities and goals shared on Bold Earth trips are life changing. We want you to view your decision to join Bold Earth as the greatest choice you’ve ever made.

WHAT ARE THE RULES? Bold Earth’s rules are the foundation of a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer. Participants unable to abide by these rules should not enroll. Breaking these rules will result in dismissal without refund.

for illegal substances.

WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE IT? Bold Earth is not for everyone; an extremely low percentage of Bold Earth participants do not complete their trip. If you have problems with alcohol, drugs or tobacco, or you arrive with a negative attitude, chances are you won’t enjoy your experience. But we exceed the expectations of the vast majority of our customers.

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO I NEED? All you need is a willingness to try and the desire to make friends. You should speak with one of our office leaders to match your readiness and age with the right program. We encourage you to expect a lot of Bold Earth and your leaders because we are going to expect a lot from you!

DO I NEED TO GET IN SHAPE? The challenges of Bold Earth can be demanding. We recommend regular aerobic exercise for at least a few weeks before taking any of our trips. Walking, jogging, swimming or riding a bike are all good ways to increase your fitness, so you can get the most out of your Bold Earth experience.

WHAT ABOUT SPENDING MONEY? You should bring $75 for every week you’ll be traveling. This will cover gifts, film, personal items and impulse purchases. We recommend you bring traveler’s checks, cash, or an ATM card. We will assist you with currency conversion upon arrival.

DO I NEED A PASSPORT/VISA? A passport is required for all international trips, including Canada and Mexico. Make two copies of your passport, leave one at home and carry one tucked away in your luggage. Visa requirements vary by country and Bold Earth will notify you if one is required. Non-USA students must check local visa requirements.

WILL I NEED A PHYSICAL OR VACCINATIONS? Contact your family physician or your local travel clinic for the most up-to-date health information. We will tell you about any required vaccinations or precautions for the countries that you are visiting.

WHAT KIND OF DIVERSITY IS REPRESENTED? Do you have to be an American to participate? Hardly. The global diversity of our staff and campers is a valued part of Bold Earth. However, English is the primary language of Bold Earth (with the exception of our language trips of course). Internationals join Bold Earth to improve their English skills, but fluency in English is not required. The more open you are to using and learning even a little bit of the local language, the better your experience will be. Don’t worry, at least one ! but, usually all Bold Earth leaders ! are fluent in the local languages.

DO YOU EVER CHANGE TRIP ITINERARIES? Yes we do; trip highlights are a broad outline, not a precise description. But, any changes made will be clearly communicated to you and your family and will only be made in the interest of safety or a more successful trip.

YOU CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT LIKE I DO, RIGHT? Bold Earth embraces stewardship for our public lands. Bold Earth operates in the Arapaho, Roosevelt, Gunnison, White River, Grand Mesa, Routt, Pike, San Isabel, Uncompahgre, Medicine Bow, San Jaun, Rio Grande, Ashley, Wenatchee and Olympic National Forests under Special Use Permits from the US Forest Service, USDA. Bold Earth also operates under a commercial-use license in the following National Parks: Olympic, Yosemite and Volcanoes. In Alaska we operate in the Denali and Chugach State Parks.

In accordance with Federal Law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, Bold Earth is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination; write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326-W, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call (202) 720-5964 (voice and TDD). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

HOW DO I KEEP IN TOUCH WITH MY FAMILY? Your family will know when you reach your destination because you and your trip leaders are

required to call your family within two hours of your arrival. On your trip, you are encouraged to call or email home once or twice to keep in touch. Of course, we will move heaven and earth to call your family in any sort of emergency; but no news is good news.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TRIP TUITION? Accommodations, activities, transportation during the trip, travel insurance to international destinations for all students, meals, laundry, helmet, skis/boards (Ultimate Alps provided at an additional cost), tents, etc. You should be able to fully participate without any

additional expense.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED? Airfare to the start point, your return ticket home, personal insurance, e-mail access and personal items listed on the equipment list are not included with the tuition cost.

WHAT IF MY FAMILY NEEDS TO CONTACT ME? Our Colorado office is reachable by phone and e-mail 24 hours a day. All problems are handled immediately and the family is always contacted directly. Most trips include one to two mail stops or e-mail access at your expense. Groups also stay in touch and share their adventures through an online trip journal.

WHAT KIND OF SKILLS DO I NEED? Activities that require instruction are led by professional guides. Guides join our group with the expertise and equipment necessary to provide a high level of demanding, fun and safe instruction suitable for different levels of experience.

DO YOU OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS? Our scholarship program allows teenagers from every type of background to enjoy Bold Earth. Contact our office for a financial aid application.

CAN ANY OF MY FRIENDS TRAVEL WITH ME OR DO I HAVE TO COME ALONE? We strongly suggest you

group who know one another.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT? Call or e-mail for payment instructions.

WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY? Prior to May 15, all tuition minus a $400 fee is fully refundable, but you must make your cancellation in writing. After May 15, there are no refunds unless you separately purchase the optional tuition insurance from Bold Earth. Campers sent home for medical reasons or at the discretion of the camper, family, trip leader or Bold Earth will not receive a refund unless covered by insurance. Your parent or guardian will have to pay for your trip home and that payment will not be administered by Bold Earth. Campers sent home for breaking any of the Bold Earth rules are not eligible for a refund even if they purchased optional tuition insurance. Bold Earth reserves the right to cancel any trip before the date of departure. If cancellation does occur, you have the option of receiving a complete refund or a transfer to another program.

I am Trevor Houghton from Portland, Oregon, USA. Last summer, at age 16, I went on Bold Earth’s Epic Africa; my sister did Bold Earth Africa two years earlier. Before my trip I collected around 30 donated soccer balls to give to African kids. This picture was taken in Shewula Village, Swaziland where we scrimmaged with the locals. We scored one goal, they scored two. : (

We traded soccer balls; the one I am holding is hand made . . . I’ll keep if forever.

Our three week trip included people from Oregon, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida, Virgin Islands, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Montana, Canada, New York, Norway, Illinois and South Africa.
