ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS AND BACK PAIN Although Chiropractic care has been an enormous help to me and my family for 30 years when I met the doctor’s at NLCC I was not cur-rently under care. As I started get-ting adjusted again the relief was almost immediate! I was suffering

from soreness, stiff-ness and sleepless nights. “Feeling bet-ter” affects every-thing in life and helps us cope with the dai-ly stresses. I suppose I am most amazed by knowing that one’s spine has to do with every part of the body. God made us that way-“fearfully & wonderfully made”

(Ps.139)Your Friend, Pastor Ron Mobley

TMJ & HEADACHES I was in a lot of pain when I started coming for my adjustments at NLCC. I suffered with pain in my jaw and severe headaches. Now that I have been receiving chiropractic care my pain has decreased tremendously and I don’t have to worry about constant headaches. I can walk my dog without pain and my posture has gotten better. My husband is also very pleased with my progress. I am thrilled at how quickly I have improved due to chiropractic care and I love the positive caring atmo-sphere they have in the office.Thank you, Denine Wolden

KNEE PAIN/SLEEPLESSNESS The reason why I came into the office was because I was having knee pain and I was not sleeping very well at night. I am now getting 3-4 more hours of sleep at night and my knees have gotten a lot better. I interact more with my family and I can ride my bike with my grand-daughter. I feel 100% better. The doctors and staff here at NLCC really do what they say and are very pro-fessional and friendly. Chiropractic care really works great! Thanks, Thomas Weems

SCOLIOSIS When I first came into the office I did not know the extent of my health issues. After the exam, the doctor told me I had a scoliosis that affected my health in many

is causing your pain or symptoms…(NOTE: Nobody gives these kinds of X-rays FREE. They would usually cost $100)…• An analysis of your X-rays and spi-nal exam results so we can see what needs to be done to help.• Helpful literature that shows how your body works and why you experience pain…• Answers to all your most probing questions about chi-ropractic care and what it can do for you….

The appoint-ment will not take long at all. And like I said, we normally charge $200 for this (most of which just covers the cost of the set of X-rays).

But now, as a part of this one time offer, you can come in and find out for certain if you need chiropractic care and how it can help you elimi-nate the pain you are feeling. Before you come in, though, you’ll probably want to know a little bit about me. So let me tell you….

MEET THE DOCTOR Prior to obtaining my Doctor of Chiropractic Degree at Life Universi-ty in Marietta, GA, I received my B.S. degree from Excelsior College. I am nationally and state board certified in Chiropractic and Physiotherapy. I am one of the few doctors in this area that performs specific Activator analysis technique for the treatment of degenerative discs, scoliosis, her-niated discs just to name a few. I have happily donated my time to organizations such as MUST Min-istries, YWCA (Domestic Violence Shelter for Women), and Ross Me-morial. I am very proud to be a wife and mother of four boys and a member of Liberty Church in Marietta, GA.

DOES CHIROPRACTICREALLY WORK Absolutely! When you come in I’ll provide you with studies that show why chiropractic is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well chiropractic works is what our patients say about it.

Dear Friend, If you’ve ever thought about go-ing to a chiropractor but you’ve hes-itated because you weren’t sure it was right for you please read on… My name is Dr. Amy Valente. I would like to show my heartfelt thanks to the community with the announcement of Community Health Week. It’s my way of saying THANK YOU to the people who have been so helpful and mean so much. I hope this will benefit you and yours. I have agreed to “give away” (to anyone who asks for it) $200 worth of my services for only $20. That’s right-$20. In the years that I have been prac-ticing I have helped many people in the North Georgia area feel better and live healthier, more productive lives through chiropractic care. I would now like to introduce you to the many benefits my profession has to offer. For instance, chiropractic care may be able to help you if you are suffering from any of the following conditions.

• Low back pain• Neck Pain• Migraines• Sciatica• Herniated discs• Degenerated discs• Shoulder/arm pain• And a whole host of other problems, ranging from TMJ to carpal tunnel.

These symptoms can be caused whenever the vertebrae in your spine are out of alignment, because this “misalignment” directly affects your nervous system. Fortunately, if you are suffer-ing from such problems or similar conditions right now, they may be relieved or eliminated by proper chiropractic treatment (common-ly called “adjustments”). So if you’ve always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what is in it for you, now is the best time because….. Right now $20 will get you all the services I normally charge my new patients $200 for!

What does this include? Everything. Take a look at what you’ll get….• An in-depth private consultation about your health and well being.• A chiropractic spinal examination….• A set of specialized X-rays to deter-mine if a misalignment in your spine

ONLY $20 TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS HELP BUT HAS NEVER BEEN TO A CHIROPRACTOR BEFORE

different ways. Chiropractic has helped me to restore my physical balance and as a dancer that is very important! I also had numb-ness in my hands and now I can take notes without my hand going numb. Since I have been getting adjusted I have more energy and my heartburn and circulation has improved! I am happy to say that chiropractic is easier than I expect-ed and not as time consuming as I once thought. Thanks! Christine Pearce

GUARANTEE OF GREAT SERVICE Obviously we can’t guarantee results. No one can. But there is one guarantee we can give you and that’s a guarantee to accept your case only if we truly feel we can help.

LIMITED TIME OFFER Obviously, with an offer like this we can’t afford to do it for very long. So we’ve picked the dates of April 1st – 15th. If you would like to take us up on our offer and see what chiropractic can do for you, all you have to do is call our office and set up an appointment.

Call our 24 hour help line @ 678-574-5678 and tell the recep-tionist you’d like to come in for the Special Introductory Examination during April 1st- 15th. I expect to get flooded with appointments for this event, so please call me as soon as possible to be sure that you don’t miss out. Thank you very much, and I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more productive life. God bless.

Sincerely,Dr. Amy Valente, D.C.

To be physically fit is almost common knowledge to eat right and exercise. What many people don’t realize is that you also need adequate sleep if you want to stay healthy. Obesity itself can be affected directly by the amount and quality of sleep you receive.

Adequate sleep is fundamental to health. The parts of your body that control your digestion, your healing

and growth, your metabolism and your brain function are all affected by the presence or absence of sleep. Nocturnal sleeping not only gives you the obvious mental clarity, but also is the time when crucial elements are produced and released within your body. The hormone melatonin controls the ability to sleep at night and is only produced when it is dark and brain activity has decreased during sleep.

Leptin is a hormone that is mainly produced at night and is influenced by sleep cycles. This essential hormone plays a significant role in the battle against the bulge, as it signals the brain to stop eating when you are full. The lack of sleep causes inadequate levels of Leptin and causes you to want to eat more. Growth Hormone is mainly released in the bloodstream at night and helps in the formation and regeneration of muscle mass, bone growth and density and new cellular formation.

Cortisol is sometimes called the “stress” hormone, because its levels are raised during periods of stress. Sleeplessness contributes to high cortisol levels which can slow the metabolism and increase insulin levels thus making it difficult to lose weight. Increased insulin levels cause the cascade of fat production to stay “turned on.” Long-standing hormone imbalances lead to more chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

People that have night jobs are more prone to be overweight and also have an increase chance of cancer and chronic illnesses. The immune system is weakened with sleeplessness and a persistent lack of sleep also affects the mood and can lead to depression.

If you have problems sleeping, there are some ways to combat insomnia. Have your cortisol (stress hormone), melatonin (sleep hormone) along with estrogen and progesterone (especially during peri-menopause) levels checked to identify and address any health problems. Try to stay on a regular routine and schedule to synchronize your body to a set sleep cycle. Do not drink alcohol near bedtime and do not consume any caffeine after 4 p.m. Keep the bedroom dark and shut off the television before going to bed. Wearing light clothing and keeping the

We will all leave this world sometime. Why leave unanswered questions with those we love?

We all want to live a significant, successful life. Yet how many of us realize that our important, positive contributions can last long after we are gone?

Two things are certain: death and taxes. Some of us grasp that reality early, so we create wills, living trusts and estate plans. Others deny this reality and leave their heirs with perplexing questions, added stress and even anger when they pass away.

The truly farsighted among us opt for a full-fledged legacy plan.

How does a legacy plan differ from an estate plan? An estate plan determines a destiny for your assets. A legacy plan does that and more: it communicates your values, wishes and memories, as well as financial directions.

If you ask someone about the “why” of estate planning — that is, why should you have an estate plan in the first place — the instant response is “to avoid estate tax.” That is certainly a good reason to create an estate plan — but it may not be the best one.

A legacy plan can convey your values and wishes when it comes to the following matters:

• The distribution of the estate – selecting a steward, showing that person how these assets are to be managed according to your values and outlook.

• The future of a family business – you can share the knowledge only the owner and founder has, you can establish who will own it after you, who will manage it and who will benefit financially from it.

• Protecting your business (and your estate) from “predators and creditors” – taking steps to insulate the business (and your heirs) against lawsuits, debts outstanding, and intrusions of relatives or past associates.

What do conventional estate plans risk ignoring? While basic estate plans establish where assets go, they don’t often communicate the personal and practical details that can aid heirs in the case of an unexpected loss.

A legacy plan communicates more than financial details — it expresses your values, your final wishes and the life lessons you want to pass along. It conveys knowledge that may make things smoother for your heirs and your company at a time of grief and crisis. It imparts wisdom that your successor may use to guide

posturE pErfEct

by Dr. Sherri Ziomek

This month, our theme is all about posture. When I was a child, my mother was constantly nagging me to “Sit up straight! Don’t slump in that chair! Shoulders back! Chest out!” At just about every interval of my life I could count on mom giving me a lecture about my posture. The message was the same even as I got older. The thing is that poor posture is easy, when

compared to adapting habits of good posture that often requires conscious effort. Most people do not think about their posture until someone brings it to their attention or it starts to hurt. The benefits of good posture far outweigh the ease of slouchy poor posture.

Posture is defined as the carriage of the body. Good posture means carrying your body in a way that puts the least strain on muscles and ligaments. Poor posture can cause pain in the back and neck, and eventually causes injury. The major problem with maintaining good posture is that we may not know what it is supposed to look like or feel like. Most of the time, we relate good posture to holding our bodies in an uncomfortable, rigid position for an extended period of time. The fact of the matter is that although the body is straight, the appearance should be one of relaxation as the ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles align in one straight line. If you hung an imaginary plumb line from the earlobe, the line would hang straight through the middle of the anklebone.

Good posture means there is musculoskeletal balance. This balance helps to protect the joints in the spine from excessive stress. It also guards against injury and possible deformity in later years. Good posture is a great ‘tool’ to help prevent pain, muscle aches and stiffness. The physical benefits are many, but there are other side benefits to good posture. When you stand properly, the body looks aligned, looks slimmer and generally looks better. Good posture can also help you feel more confident because if you look and feel better, your confidence increases. Improving your posture is a great way to improve your image while at the same time improving your health.

If you already suffer from poor posture, it is not too late to make corrections. The best way to begin looking at correcting your posture is to become conscious about the way you sit, stand and move throughout the day. Also, take a second look at the things you carry with you on a daily basis. Children carry huge overloaded backpacks, adults lug briefcases to work, women carry large handbags and thousands of people spend hours hunched over a computer whether for work or play. Poor posture is not only habitual, but is seen in people with low self-esteem. This can lead to degenerative problems that affect the spine and pain that cause muscle guarding and obesity. If you

12 Months of giving

by Dan Jape

For most of us, heating and air conditioning is not just a luxury, but a necessity. Anyone who has spent a few days with a broken down air conditioner during a blazing, humid Georgia summer can attest to that. We are so accustomed to our “creature comforts” that many of us take our indoor comfort for granted.

Since the economic downturn, we are seeing more and more people that simply cannot afford to repair their broken air conditioning or heating systems, let alone replace them. We talk to people every day who have been without air conditioning or heat for two or three years because of the cost associated with fixing it. Many of these folks are families with small children who have to make tough budgeting choices every day, as well as elderly men and women on a fixed income.

We have often wondered at the fact that during the holidays, everyone seems to be in a giving mood. Toy and food drives abound and charitable contributions peak during November and December. But are people less cold, hungry or poor the remaining months of the year?

It is for these reasons that Reliable Heating & Air and WSB radio have partnered to bring you the “12 Months of Giving” in which one family per month will be given a free replacement heating & cooling system. All you have to do is submit the story of a friend, family member or co-worker in need via email to [email protected] and at the end of each month a winner will be chosen and announced on WSB AM 750 and 95.5 FM. Please include the contact information for yourself and for your nominee.

Thanks for your participation!

Back in the day, I was the epitome of the starving grad student who ate nothing but mac‘n’ cheese and canned tuna. The only diversity in my diet came from the “tastes” available at the local warehouse club where I went to eat, or, shop, on the weekends. In the process of earning my Masters degree, I also learned to shop smart so I could still eat well.

Meats sales are great to catch. If you keep your eyes open as holidays approach, you can usually find good deals on a variety of meats. I stock up my freezer whenever I find chicken breasts for $1.99 per pound. Storing the breasts in individual zip top bags makes it easy to simply thaw out just the amount you need when you want to use it.

Canned chicken is another item to stock up on when you can get it for a Buy One Get One Free deal. It has a long shelf life and it is great to have on hand when throwing together soups, chicken salad or even mixed with pasta salad. It’s also good in a hot dog bun, topped with cheddar cheese, wrapped in foil and baked until toasted. Canned chicken also makes a great, cheap, pizza topping, especially if mixed with veggies, pesto or tomato sauce.

Buying in-season will definitely save you money. Even if you aren’t into canning your own veggies, you can still reap the benefits of fresh, cheap, produce by enjoying it in salads, on sandwiches or simply grilled with some salt and olive oil. Typically, salad dressings of one flavor or another will be on sale. This is a good time to try a new flavor or experiment with a favorite. For instance, we love Raspberry Vinaigrette and discovered that it is great to cook on salmon or shrimp to give it a sweet kick. We also stock up on dry Italian and Ranch mixes to use as seasonings for meat and veggies.

To this day, I cook one to two big entrees on the weekend and dress up the leftovers with extra ingredients or side dishes during the week. Saturday night’s grilled chicken might reappear as chicken tacos or enchiladas during the week. Eating on a budget doesn’t have to be boring or monotonous. Just shop smart and keep your leftovers interesting! Happy Cooking!

If your eyes are red and itchy, your vision blurry and your lids sticky when you get up in the morning, you may have Conjunctivitis, the most common eye infection in the United States. Most often recognized by the redness from which it gets the name “pink eye,” Conjunctivitis is irritating, but usually harmless to your sight. Yet it can be very contagious, especially

among children, and should be diagnosed and treated early.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that lines your eyelids and covers the white part of your eye. It can appear in one or both eyes and is caused by bacteria, viruses or allergies.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is the most common form of eye infection and is easily spread from one person to another. In addition to redness and itching of the eyes, the symptoms include a thick, yellowish discharge that may dry overnight and cause your eyelids to stick together.

Viral conjunctivitis, which is caused by any number of viruses, is also contagious. Although redness and itching are typical symptoms, discharge from the eye is watery and clear. Antibiotics are not effective against viral conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by a reaction to something in the air, such as dust and pollen or by chemical irritants such as household cleaners, spray perfume or industrial pollutants. The eyes are usually red and swollen and watering and itching is often severe.

If you experience any of the symptoms of conjunctivitis, call your eye doctor. The most important thing is to get early treatment to limit the spread of the infection, especially among children.

Tips for limiting the spread of bacterial and viral conjunctivitis:

• Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.• Wash your hands frequently.• Don’t share washcloths, towels, or pillowcases and launder infected linens after each use.• Don’t share eye drops.• Throw away infected cosmetics, including mascara, eye shadow and eyeliner.• If you wear contact lenses, check with your eye doctor about discontinuing wear or replacing lenses.

Warnings from the Better Business BureauGimmicks Involving Gas Saving Devices

As gas prices continue to climb, some businesses are seeking opportunities to make money off of commuters by selling fuel boosting additives or offering engine modifications to help them conserve fuel. However, BBB advises consumers to stay away from these “gas saving” products and services that sound “too-good-to-be true.”

Over the past decade, the EPA has tested more than 100 gas-saving devices and hasn’t identified any that significantly improve gas mileage and some could eventually cause engine damage.

Consumers may begin to see ads for gas saving devices. BBB recommends being particularly skeptical if advertisements claim:

• Federal Endorsement. While the EPA does evaluate the legitimacy of claims made by companies that produce gas savers, no federal agency actually endorses gas-saving devices or additives.

• Glowing Consumer Testimonials. Marketing materials or websites for gas savers often contain consumer testimonies on the increased fuel efficiency they experienced with the device or additive, but these are often works of fiction devised by the company.

• Outstanding, Too-Good-To-Be-True Results. Consumers should be extremely wary of big promises for big savings. If a gas-saving product really could increase mileage by as much as 40 percent with little effort or money, it is highly unlikely the inventor needs to peddle the product through spam e-mails or tacky-looking websites.

The vast majority of gas-conserving products are not viable solutions for squeezing mileage out of vehicles, but here are some tips drivers can take to increase fuel efficiency and get the most out of their gas tank:

• Stay within the speed limit. Gas mileage tends to decrease rapidly at speeds above 60 miles per hour.

• Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and stops. Drivers can improve gas mileage around town if they avoid jerky starts and stops. This means accelerating slowly when starting from a dead stop and avoiding pushing the pedal down more than one-quarter of the way.

• Air Conditioning or Windows? Using the air conditioner at lower speeds will decrease fuel efficiency, but, at higher speeds, open windows create significantly more drag than the AC — and can reduce gas mileage.

• Remove excess weight from the trunk. An extra 100 pounds can reduce a typical car’s fuel economy by up to two percent.

• Keep the car properly maintained. The engine should be tuned, tires inflated and aligned, the oil changed on schedule and the air filters should be checked and replaced regularly.

Before buying any gas-saving device or additive, BBB recommends that consumers check out the company’s reliability report free-of-charge online at www.bbb.org.

Will That Be Plastic or Plastic?

Do you realize which card carries the most risk? A stolen credit card or a stolen debit card? Without a doubt, a stolen debit card carries more risk. Federal law says that you can only be held liable for $50 of fraudulent charges on your credit card. Many banks will waive that charge. According to www.federalreserve.gov, if your debit card is stolen, your loss is limited to $50 — but you have to tell the financial institution within two days after learning of the loss or theft of your card. If not, you could be held liable for $500. There’s more. If you let the unauthorized transaction go unreported more than 60 days after it appears on your statement, you are liable for all the charges! However, if you check your bank account transactions online at least once a week, you are going to know what is going on with your account. There’s an even bigger problem with the debit card. The thief can clear out your entire bank account by using your PIN at an ATM. This leaves you with no money to pay your bills.

Granted, the bank could cover most of your losses and return money to your account, but that will take time to do the necessary investigation. Also, because the money for your transaction with a debit card is taken at the point of purchase, you could possibly run your balance too low and end up with an expensive overdraft charge. Some people argue that it is better to use a credit card because you are using someone else’s money until the statement is due. So, if you are charging at the beginning of the billing cycle you have a month to use someone else’s money.

The Federal Trade Commission provides full details on “Credit, ATM and Debit Cards: What to do if they’re Lost or Stolen.” The information may be found at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre04.shtm.

***For more consumer tips, visit www.bbb.org. *** BBB representatives are available to assist you from 9 a.m. — 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. — 4 p.m. All BBB

reports and the ability to file complaints can be done at www.bbb.org. BBB reports are also available

via the automated phone system 24 hours a day by calling (404) 766-0875.

One of my kids’ favorite pastimes is to play “I Spy.” Not only is it a fun challenge for them, it also keeps them preoccupied when we are out to eat at a restaurant, and it allows the adults at the table to carry on a somewhat uninterrupted conversation. So, it’s encouraged.

It never fails that my kids – now ages 11 and (almost) 7 – can spot the most obscure of items, whether they are the “spyer” or the “guesser.” They are perceptive. They are quick. They can go beyond the obvious to discover the minuscule or insignificant if the task requires it.

Which begs this question: If my kids possess mad observation skills when they have to use brain power and patience, what do they see when things are in plain sight? How careful am I when I am around them? What about others, like teachers, friends’ parents, or coaches at the ball field, who have an immeasurable impact on shaping my child’s character? Do they realize – truly realize – that the spotlight is on them in a much more significant manner than a Broadway actor?

Our kids see. They witness our imperfections, our stumbles, our weaknesses, our tirades. They know when someone is being treated unfairly. They are keenly aware of adults who are “trouble.” They can pick up very quickly what is going on, as innocent as most of them are.

I am a dad to two boys, but I also a coach to another 21 boys on the baseball field. It is a privilege like none other, and I do not take it lightly. I have the ability to shape – even just a tiny bit – who these young boys will grow up to be. The types of attitudes they will have, the type of friends they become, the kind of sports they will be in victory or defeat, and how they will respect and treat others. That is an awesome thing.

I was working with one of the kids on the team the other day. We were in the bullpen, and this young man was telling me about his experience on a team the year before. He suddenly said, “I don’t like Coach (insert coach’s name).” I had heard other parents and kids say the same thing, and all I could think about was how much of a shame it was that kids felt this way about a man who volunteers his time to coach. This was the same coach that I heard brought in a kid in the middle of an inning to pitch in relief. The kid who came in was allowed to throw one pitch – ONE – before the coach yanked him out of the game. Kids know. Kids see. Kids feel.

Eyes are on you whether you realize it or not, whether you like it or not. We have the power, as adults, to encourage, love, teach, and invest in children and teenagers. What we say and do around them – especially in our roles as parents – will either do

When we first moved to Acworth, we did not yet have an office complex to call our own. As a result, our staff met each day at local coffee shops. The only requirement was Free WiFi and a comfortable place to get work done. Thankfully, that wasn’t difficult to find.

What made things a little more difficult was the combination of a mobile office,

my people-watching hobby and the propensity to become very easily distracted. This might occur because I am a Pastor, but I always try and figure out what is going on inside the minds of people just by listening to what they say and watching what they do.

I overheard and observed so many things during that season. Here are a few examples: 1. The man describing in detail his “bout with gout.”2. The woman vividly describing the birthing process to her pregnant daughter.3. The man verbally assaulting his boss behind his back — until the boss came back from the restroom and rejoined his coworkers at the table.4. The young couple “discreetly” meeting in order to plan the exit strategy from their current marriage relationships so that the two of them could be together.5. A father explaining to his young daughter how proud he was of her.

You can gain significant insight into the lives of people by observing what they do and listening to that which dominates their discussion. The Bible talks about this very thing.

In Acts 4, Peter and John were seemingly larger-than-life. They saw miracle after miracle occur right before their eyes. Theirs was a world full of wonder and amazement at the miracle working power of God. People were intrigued by their words and what they were able to accomplish — even those who were in direct opposition.

(Acts 4:13) — Now as they (their enemies) observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.

The lives of Peter and John were distinguishably different. These men didn’t have extraordinary talent, education or ability. What they did have was an unwavering commitment to speak about what they had seen and heard (Acts 4:20). As a result,

inherited assets in the future, so that these assets might endure for more than a generation.

In other words, it gives your heirs your business and some answers to the questions “what do we do now” and “what would he/she have wanted us to do.”

Legacy plans are built taking many factors into account. The first factor is you. What are your goals, financial and otherwise? A legacy plan should first respect your wishes and intentions. The second factor is family. Different people define “family” in all kinds of different ways. A good legacy plan respects your definition and is created with an understanding of it and your particular “family” dynamics.

Only after this should the tax and financial strategies of the plan be determined.

Many estate plans are too boilerplate, and/or they aren’t designed to hand down the experiential wealth and wisdom that should accompany the assets. A good legacy plan transmits values, instructions and guidance to ease a family’s burden when it comes to settling financial and business issues at a time of grief.

Just as kids see the worst in us, they also see the best in us. They know the adults they want to spend time with. They know the coaches they want to play for. They know the police officer who gives them a high five, or the teacher who gives them hugs. And, most of all, they know their moms and dads. And, their eyes are searching – always searching – to find someone they can follow.
