The coalition government has supported a freezing of the tax for this year. These are difficult times and a standstill in this significant tax is right. It needs to be added that the zero increase is being managed whilst coping with the national reduction in government grant to councils. A Conservative Trafford i s running the various council activities with less money and no swingeing cuts to frontline services—something that nearby Labour councils should try to emulate.” Raising the Standard  Special Election Edition  Vote Mike Whetton Conservative on Thursday 5 th May Postal Voting With Council Elections as well as the referendum on the Alternative Vote system for future General Elections, it may suit some voters to have a postal v ote. Mike Whetton - Workingfor Ashton upon Mersey

Trees are important. Mike Whetton welcomed the opportunity to comment onproposals to chop down several mature trees on a stretch of residential road in Ashton.

As well as making his own representations that the trees should be retained, Mike urgedresidents to give their views too, whichever view they held. As a result the majority view

prevailed and the trees have been saved.

Caring for older people must go to plan. Mike Whetton is keen to see our elderlycitizens looked after properly and in a community setting. “Care homes are of growingimportance and it is right that they are located in a community setting. However, newbuild care homes should blend in with their setting and not be oversized schemes amidstresidential properties. I have opposed planning applications that are too big, such asAshlands and the former Pictor School site, and I will do so again should the need arise.”

Roads through Ashton upon Mersey are generally in a looked-after condition. MikeWhetton responds to residents’ requests for repairs, raising urgent cases with Council

officers. “The recent freezing weather caused road damage across Trafford and workis on to deal with it. I report instances of dangerous conditions as soon as I am awareof them and ensure repairs are undertaken.”

Cross Street eyesore must be redeveloped. For several years Mike Whetton has beenurging action to get the eyesore site on Cross Street (A56) re-developed. There havebeen several false dawns, due in part to the economic situation, but it remains high onhis agenda. “I am determined that this blighted site should be developed with a schemethat lifts the immediate area and improves the outlook for the near neighbours. Theyhave waited too long for improvements to be made. There are some positive signsagain and I will stay on the case until we have a good scheme designed and built.”

Schools in Trafford are beacons of quality with many judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.Mike Whetton is proud to be a governor of Ashton on Mersey School which hasconsistently delivered excellent standards over many years. “Our Junior schools areexcellent too and we see high demand for places locally in schools such as Park RoadJuniors. Trafford’s system of education provides superb opportunities for all children inthe borough.”

Ashton village, at the heart of the Ward, is a treasure to be looked after. “With anexcellent selection of shops, restaurants and pubs, the village is important to ourcommunity both socially and economically. Local residents must keep the village

vibrant by supporting its businesses. That way, we keep such facilities close by andwe support quite a number of jobs for local people.” says Mike Whetton.

Helping people is part of being a Ward Councillor and Mike Whetton is inconstant contact with local people. “Many contact me to seek help with aproblem and I always try my best to get a good result for them. I’ve helpedwith things like a Blue Badge problem, a neighbour’s conern over anadjoining extension, a disputed parking fine and a drug problem causingdisturbance. People sometimes need help with issues that are causingthem hardship. If they are brought to my attention, I’ll do whatever ispossible to get good resolutions.”
