Greetings,

What a fantastic parish this is and how blessed we are that members of St. Sebastian Parish of yesteryear thought enough of their parish and those who would be worshipping here in the future that they did something to make sure that St. Sebastian would not only be here but would be strong well into the future. We are the beneficiaries of that generosity. It is because of The Foundation that they set up that our buildings and grounds are in such good conditions, our programs are thriving, and because of the liveliness of the parish our numbers continue to grow. This is because we can focus more on ministry and less on fundraising.

We have the opportunity to pass our blessings on to the next generation of St. Sebastian families by supporting the Parish Foundation. In this way we make sure that our Catholic faith continues to inspire souls and that this West Akron neighborhood remains strong and vibrant. If you have already given to the St. Sebastian Foundation; thank you. If you are contemplating giving please know that your contribution not only helps today but will continue to bring hope, faith, and stability well into the future.

God bless you, The Rev. John A. Valencheck • Pastor

“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” — Thornton Wilder

Thank you, so sincerely, for helping us preserve our parish. Your gifts to the foundation allow us to maintain our places of worship and offer a Catholic education to our children. It is a remarkable thing to have a community continue to come together to protect our heritage and safeguard our church and school for future generations. I give thanks for you.

Offering a Catholic education to our community is so important and is often not an option for many families. Your gifts to the St. Sebastian Parish Foundation help make it a possibility. Help us continue to provide a Catholic education. Please keep the St. Sebastian Parish Foundation in your gift planning. As always, I am here to help you with any of your gifting questions and needs.

Thank you and God bless, Jennifer Knapp Ciarlariello • Director of Development • St. Sebastian Parish Foundation

to the university of Akron. We were married at St. Sebastian in 1966, and settled in Canton, where we had our beautiful daughter, Mary Kathryn, in 1969.

The last 20 years of her 38-year teaching career (mostly with Akron Public Schools) Mary Jane had Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Mary Jane continued to teach for 15 years after her deteriorating condition required her to use a wheelchair. This taught the kids a lot more than Math. They got to see on a daily basis that people with disabilities can do important work if they get a little help.

Mary Jane was an incredible individual, a fine leader and manager who ran the Math Department of a major high school in Akron. She was a pioneer in Computer Education in Akron. She taught children that a disability does not have to preclude accomplishing important work.

So, my parting message for the St. Sebastian Parish Class of ’52 is that Mary Jane is a classmate you can well be proud of. She loved your school and she loved each of you. This is why we are establishing a permanent Math endowment … so that funds can go directly toward establishing a permanent math endowment at St. Sebastian Parish School.

The Mary Jane hudak Roberts Math Fund was established in 2011 as a memorial to a much-loved wife, mother and alumni of St. Sebastian Parish School. Her husband, Jim, started the fund.

Although Jim had no connection to St. Sebastian before he met Mary Jane, his love and dedication to her spirit have made him an “adopted” alumnus of the class of 1952, and we consider him family! Here are some excerpts from a letter Jim wrote to his adopted classmates.

~

Mary Jane (hudak) Roberts (1938 - 2000) was raised by her parents, the late Andy and Mary Lunder hudak, … and like her sister, Alice, went to St. Sebastian School from grades 1-8 … She went on to what is today St. Vincent-St. Mary (and then)

Greetings to our 5,321 St. Sebastian Parish School Alumni!

Our first class graduated from St. Sebastian Parish School in 1930 and here we are, 82 years later, reaching out to you. It took almost a year, and three dedicated Alum volunteers, to go through over 80 years worth of boxes that contained disorganized, mislabeled and often missing information. These volunteers went through box after box and several filing cabinets and spent another 15 months to locate 89% (4,717 individuals) of our alums. Wow!

Now we are looking for class leaders and volunteers to help us locate missing alum and faculty, plan exciting reunions and write newsletters to keep you connected. Are you interested in joining our Alumni Committee? Please contact us and join today!

The 2011 September Spectacular, St. Sebastian’s annual gala, was supremely successful, raising more than $85,000 for the school. Guests had a swinging good time at the 1920s-themed event, which featured live and silent auctions as well as dinner and dancing. The foundation and the entire parish owe much thanks to the event’s chair, Andrea Bologna, and her large team of volunteers for their phenomenal work and dedication.

Of the proceeds raised in 2011, $45,000 will be used to reduce tuition by more than $100 per student next year and $19,000 will pay for technology upgrades. In addition, more than $19,000 was donated during a special “paddle-raise” to fully-fund the parish’s new learning garden.

“Sebastian’s Garden,” an outdoor classroom and working garden, was established in May of 2011. located on the east side of Byrider Hall, the garden provides students and teachers with a learning environment that cultivates the principles of gardening/farming and environmental science. It also provides lessons in entrepreneurship through produce sales at school and church events.

True to its name, the September Spectacular event has been spectacularly successful over its eight-year history, bringing in $32,000 in the first year and moving on to become our parish’s largest fundraising event. St. Sebastian Parish Foundation is proud to have helped from the beginning.

In 2011, St. Sebastian Parish Foundation celebrated its 40th year of serving the parish. Through the generosity of many parishioners, the foundation has contributed over $7 million to our church and school since it began in 1971.

At the 2011 September Spectacular event, the parish honored four foundation board members who have been instrumental to the foundation’s success: John Beringer, Ann Brennan, Vince DelMedico and Jim Pier. These four devoted board members collectively served our parish for nearly 75 years.

John Beringer retired from the board in 2008 after nearly 30 years of faithful service. The Beringer family has deep roots with our parish. John’s parents, Charles and Kathyrn Beringer, were charter members of the church. John’s seven siblings, ten children, and several of his grandchildren have attended St. Sebastian Parish School.

The Beringer family demonstrated their dedication to St. Sebastian’s future by funding the 2001-2002 renovation of the former convent into the Beringer Center for Early learning. The building, which was named in honor of John’s parents, now houses the parish’s preschool and kindergarten classes.

Besides his keen financial intellect and his ability to always ask the right questions, John’s leadership, wisdom and love of this parish brought incredible value to the Foundation.

Ann Brennan retired from the board in 2011 after 14 years of dedicated service. Ann also has deep roots in our parish. Her parents, Frances and Bernard Amer, were charter members of St. Sebastian. Ann’s husband, David, along with Charles Burke, started the foundation in 1971, and Ann will tell you how proud she is to follow up on what he started.

Ann was, and remains, a huge proponent of preserving and growing the capital of this parish and

keeping the money right here – since each gift given to the foundation stays at St. Sebastian Parish.

Ann says she is pleased the foundation helped set the stage for Fr. Valencheck to focus on the spiritual needs of our parish, rather than our financial needs. Ann reminds us the foundation is responsible for ensuring there is a future for St. Sebastian Parish – which no small matter, in light of recent closures of insolvent churches.

Vince DelMedico faithfully served for twenty years until he retired from the board in 2011. Vince and his wife, Jacquelyn, have six children, all of whom are St. Sebastian graduates, as well as 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Some of the foundation projects of which Vince is most proud include working with fellow board member John Kelley to install a state-of-the-art acoustics system in the church and replacing the boilers at the school and Byrider Hall in 2011. Vince was also very pleased to be a part of the renovations to Zwisler Hall and the transformation of the “new” convent into the Beringer Center for Early learning.

Vince says when he started on the board, the foundation assets were low, but by the grace of God, the board was able to invest in the right things during his tenure. As a long-time member of the

Investment Committee, Vince stresses that all the assets of the foundation cannot be spent this minute, because the money needs to be there for our children’s children.

Jim Pier served the foundation board for more than a decade. In August of 2007, our parish lost a beloved and faithful friend when Jim passed away. Jim and his wife, Brenda, have six children, all of whom are graduates of St. Sebastian.

Brenda says one of the things Jim was proudest of during this tenure with the foundation was the Zwisler Hall renovations. Jim was also particularly proud of the foundation’s work on the Buehrle Science wing in 2002 and 2003 that created the state-of-the-art lab our students thrive in today.

Brenda says Jim also got great satisfaction with hands-on involvement in the so-called “little” things, such as picking up trash, painting school hallways, and installing lighting in dark halls.

Brenda found the following written in one of Jim’s notebooks: “A parish reflects the strength of our neighborhood, the solidity of each of our families and the oneness of our belief in Jesus Christ.” Jim selflessly served us and taught us to always put our words into action to strengthen our parish.

In the summer of 2011, the library of St. Sebastian Parish School was completely renovated. The $50,000 project, which literally overhauled the library from floor to ceiling, is one of the largest renovation projects in recent school history.

Funding for the library renovation was provided by generous donations to the Helen Barry Hamlin library Fund, one of the many funds managed by the St. Sebastian Parish Foundation.

One of the top priorities of the renovation was replacement of the library’s HVAC system. Previously, high humidity and a dripping library ceiling created a breeding ground for mold, which damaged books and raised concerns about asthma risks.

In addition to a new HVAC system, the library now has a new ceiling, new floors, new electrical wiring, new lighting, new chairs, new books, new doors, and new paint.

Thanks to good timing, the parish was able to buy solid wood bookshelves, a circulation desk, and book carts from liquidation sales held at local Borders book stores. The oak wood shelves, which are worth $18,000, were purchased for less than $3,000, according to librarian Eileen Cox.

The new shelves are not only more aesthetically pleasing than the old metal ones; they are taller, which allows for more open space in the library.

Library Renovation Highlights• new glass doors and drywall create a

welcoming entrance.

• beautiful new laminate flooring has replaced outdated carpeting.

• Attractive oak shelving has replaced old metal shelves.

• new electrical, lighting and hVAC systems and a new ceiling provide a healthier, brighter and more comfortable space.

• A new red circulation desk and colorful new book carts add a bright spots throughout the library.

• A new reading space was created in the former stage area with the removal of a wall and the addition of colorful floor cushions.

• 100 new titles were acquired, bringing the library’s holdings to 9,500 books.

• 30 new wood chairs, freshly-painted brick walls, 2 new computers and a new Smart Board provide the finishing touches to this state-of-the-art library.

The Helen Barry Hamlin Library FundThe Helen Barry Hamlin library Fund was created in 2000 under the auspices of the St. Sebastian Parish Foundation. The fund was established by Richard “Dick” hamlin and his family. Mr. hamlin and his wife Yvonne are faithful St. Sebastian parishioners.

The fund, which is named for Dick’s mother, was created to support the school library by providing money for purchasing books and related materials.

Major gifts to the fund from the hamlin family in 2009 and 2010 paid for the renovation of the library, which was renamed the Helen Barry Hamlin library.

Now that the renovation is finished, the money left in The Helen Barry Hamlin library Fund will again be used to purchase books and other literacy items for the library.

Anyone who wants to support reading, literacy, the library, books, etc., may make a donation to the foundation’s The Helen Barry Hamlin library Fund by contacting the parish Development office.

Thank You!The foundation wishes to thank the Hamlin family for its generosity and commitment to the parish – the beautiful new Helen Barry Hamlin library has already created a spark of enthusiasm for reading and learning in our students, and the library will continue to be a source of inspiration for many, many years to come.

In addition, the foundation would like to thank parishioners Jeff and Filomena Krejsa, who donated the new flooring through Jeff’s employer, Johnsonite Flooring.

Our appreciation is also extended to St. Sebastian’s Facilities Manager Aaron Salisbury for managing the renovation project, as well as Rich Green and other St. Sebastian staff members who helped.

Much thanks also to St. Sebastian librarian eileen Cox and former library aide Meg Lee, who worked long hours taking book inventory, purging the collection, and then re-stocking the shelves.

The foundation would also like to acknowledge the following contractors for the fine work they contributed to the project: lewis Construction, Fred Crisp Doors, S.A. Comunale, Just Ceilings, Fred Yoder Painting and Superior Drywall.

Thank you for making a difference for our parish and school and thank you for helping us continue to offer a strong financial foundation of hope for our future generations. The foundation is like insurance to provide financial help to our parish and school both now and for the faithful yet to come.

How wonderful to be a part of what keeps Father Valencheck, and all our future pastors, focused on ministry and evangelization. Year after year, I continue to be awed by the faith and power of our parishioners.

When you give a gift to the foundation or include the foundation in your estate plans, you are perpetuating that hope. On a personal note, Pam and I recently updated our wills and were sure to remember the Foundation as part of our plan.

The foundation is the arm of support for our parish and is integral in helping to carry out the mission of our church. Be proud that you are part of such a loyal and passionate group of people who come together to pray and grow the Kingdom of Christ; I am certainly proud to be a part of this parish.

Together, we are making a difference. Thank you for your generosity. May God bless you and your loved ones.

Most sincerely,

Patrick O’Neill

Parish Responds Generously to Diocesan Capital CampaignMuch Needed Funds Raised for Brick Parking Lot

St. Sebastian’s parishioners responded generously to the diocesan capital campaign, pledging 100% of the $1.49 million goal for the parish. The campaign, called “Rooted in Faith - Forward in Hope,” kicked off at St. Sebastian Parish in the spring of 2011 and concluded in early 2012.

“The response was fantastic,” said Fr. Valencheck, adding that the parish is very thankful to all the volunteers for everything they did to help the parish achieve its goal.

Seventy percent of the campaign funds will go to diocesan-wide components: clergy formation, assistance for retired priests, evangelization, lay faith formation, catholic education and charitable works.

Thirty percent of the funds raised by St. Sebastian will return to the parish. St. Sebastian will receive nearly $500,000, which Fr. Valencheck estimates is just about the amount needed to address a pressing issue: repair of the parish’s brick lot...

22 ❘ S T. S e b A S T i A n PA R i S h F o u n DAT i o n

The red brick parking lot, which was built under the guidance of Monsignor Zwisler, is a unique and charming feature of our parish. Many people have fond memories associated with it – and even an emotional attachment to it. However, the brick lot is deteriorating, and the parish has been concerned about it for several years now.

Although the lot is approximately 80 years old, since it was built with used paving bricks, the materials are actually much older than that. Many of the bricks range from crumbling to completely disintegrated. Shifts in the ground have caused low areas to develop that hold water and freeze in the winter. Every year, a few people have fallen and been injured on the slippery, uneven surface.

In 2009, the parish’s foundation created the Brick Fund, a fund designated for repair of the brick lot, when a donor made a generous gift to the foundation and said to use it for the greatest need. With this good start and in light of increasing safety concerns about the lot, parish leaders decided to

funnel all funds received from the capital campaign into the foundation’s Brick Fund.

The parish has been gathering information on the best solution to the brick lot’s issues.

According to Fr. Valencheck, although re-bricking the lot would be very expensive, resurfacing it with tarmac would end up costing roughly the same since the new lot would be subject to costly new zoning laws for drainage systems, lighting, etc.

Since pledges to the diocesan campaign are payable over a five-year period, the parish does not yet have the money in hand to move forward, no matter which option is selected. In the meantime, parish leaders will continue to gather information and study the issue. Stay tuned for more information and thank you for your generosity!

Thank you for saving the Red Brick Yard!

Planned Giving

A very special thank you to foundation volunteers for their help in creating this report: Anne Dennee, Emma Elias, Steve Hamilton, Erin Haslinger and David Sboray.

St. Sebastian Parish Foundation relies on the generosity of our community and can help you shape a legacy of hope for future generations. Planned gifts are becoming an increasingly important and critical source of endowment income for St. Sebastian Parish. The St. Sebastian Parish Foundation can help you achieve your long-term goals and secure your legacy of charitable giving for generations to come. Planned gifts are simply gifts that St. Sebastian Parish will receive sometime in the future. They often provide benefits (income and tax) to the donor as well as to St. Sebastian Parish, and provide important support for St. Sebastian Parish.

long-term giving and planned commitments to the St. Sebastian Parish Foundation may be made in many ways, including deferred gifts and estate trusts; you can designate St. Sebastian Parish Foundation as a beneficiary of a will or trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, bank account or stock holding, or charitable lead trust. If having an income stream is important to you, a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust may be an option. Please allow our staff to assist you in achieving these goals, as we are dedicated to helping donors achieve their long-term charitable goals.

If you have included St. Sebastian Parish Foundation in your estate plans, or are considering including St. Sebastian Parish Foundation in your plans, please let us know so we can thank you now for your generosity. Individuals who have included St. Sebastian Parish Foundation in their estate plans are invited to become members of our Arrow Society.

Many companies offer this type of program to their employees, and sometimes retirees, as a way to encourage charitable giving. The St. Sebstian Organ Purchase a PipeAs with all mechanical devices that are fifty years old and in use every day, our organ – now a half-century old – is approaching the limits of its predicted life span. The past couple of years, we have experienced constant shutter problems (shutters control sound levels), continuous ciphers and electrical shut downs, and the thousands of leather hinges are nearing the end of their

usefulness. This is especially trying during weddings and concerts when our organ is featured. We have been spending a goodly amount of money bandaging our organ as best we can but, like a car, eventually there is only so much that you can do.

It is time to restore our organ. The cost to refurbish our current organ is in excess of $300,000.

Purchase one pipe, several pipes, or a “rank,” (61 pipes), and receive a Certificate of Authenticity and a printed expression of our deep gratitude in the Gratitude Booklet. Please feel free to use the enclosed envelope for your pipe purchase.

Single Pipes $165

Rank (61 pipes) $10,500
