About our CRO-Specific Salary and Turnover Survey

Introduction

The CRO Salary Survey is entering its thirteenth consecutive year. In 2010 it continued with a strong level of participation with 15 CROs submitting their compensation data. As most of you know, this is the fourth year that HR+Survey Solutions will be conducting the survey. It was previously conducted by the Workplace Group. Data is collected directly from participating CROs' Human Resources departments every year, making our data the most reliable available.

Last year, HR+Survey Solutions conducted the 2010 survey with many significant enhancements, most notably our global expansion, which included 24 countries. In the 2009 Survey, we added CRO Compensation Plan Design, Benefits and Perquisites to the Survey to expand the type and scope of compensation related information being collected and analyzed.

We received excellent feedback about the continued GLOBAL COVERAGE for 2011. Companies were excited about a survey specifically designed to exclusively serve the needs of the CRO industry. To ensure that the survey continues to reflect the needs of the industry, we seek continual guidance from participants through telephone conversations, responses to our feedback survey, and we conduct an annual planning meeting, which we held in December this year . We are always eager to have more industry input, if you would like to participate in our planning meeting next year. Invitations to the planning meeting will be sent out in late fall.

2011 Continued Enhancements

New Hot Topic Surveys:

- Quarterly surveys on topics that will be selected with Survey Participant input.

- Potential topics include: Summer Schedules; CRA Career Paths; Pay for Scientific Certification; Salary Planning; On-call Policies; Number and Type of Holidays.

- All companies will be invited to participate, but reports will be complimentary to Annual Survey Participants.

- Countries include Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Ukraine, and United Kingdom.

- Global Survey will cover the Clinical Research positions, with the addition of reporting compensation by organizational-level for 2011.

118 benchmark jobs in 11 Job Families (up from 40 jobs in just 4 job families in 2008). The positions in the survey continue to reflect CRO-defined jobs, not jobs in other industries that are similar but not equivalent to CRO jobs.

All of North America and Canada.

Detailed compensation data including annual incentive payouts, target awards and long-term incentives.

Detailed turnover data. We are collecting global data, and cover four organizational areas.

Policy and practices which focuses on those pay package components that often make the difference in attracting and retaining critical talent. Specifically, this covers:

- Annual incentive plan design and prevalence.

- Long-term incentive plan design and prevalence.

- Special section on Sales Compensation (new in 2010).

- Benefit plan design and prevalence.

- Perquisite prevalence.

- Prevalence of other compensation arrangements such as deferred compensation, employment contracts, change-in-control, and severance agreements.

Data Collection: In response to the experience of the past participants, in 2009 we simplified the data collection process. For 2011 data will continue to be collected by incumbent in a user friendly Excel spreadsheet format, eliminating the need for participants to do any calculations.

Data will be collected in the spring to enable us to capture the most recent salary increases and bonus/incentive/commission payments from the most recent fiscal year.

As in the past, all data will be held in the strictest of confidence. The results will be tabulated in such a way that individual pay data will not be revealed.

Reporting Your Data

Once all data is tabulated, those participating in our survey will receive the final survey results in aggregate form in an excel workbook file. (All identifying company information is removed from aggregate data). This format allows you import data into your favorite software. The survey results are only available to participants.

Participants in the global survey will receive results for the countries for which they provide data.

Cost-Benefit

While we have significantly expanded the survey, the annual fee to purchase the results will remain the same at $3,500. As in the past, results are only available to participants.

Additionally, global results will be available at a cost of $350 per country, to a max of $3000 for data reported on all countries.
