Gump’s and AIDS Walk San Francisco:Two Bay Area Institutions Share Milestones
By AJ Ludlow
2 011 is a year of landmarks in the history ofHIV/AIDS. Thirty years ago, the Centers forDisease Control reported the first known
cases of HIV/AIDS in the United States and, 25 yearsago, young activists organized the very first AIDSWalk San Francisco to fight the rapidly growingepidemic.
In addition, this year marks a milestone foranother Bay Area institution with strong ties to theAIDS Walk. One hundred and fifty years ago, SanFrancisco-based luxury gift, jewelry, and home décorretailer, Gump’s, set up shop in the fledgling city. The store endured the rapid, and at times turbulent, development of San Francisco, and today is alandmark of the city’s worldly style and maverickspirit.
Gump’s formed a team at the very first AIDSWalk San Francisco in 1987, and has remained astrong supporter ever since. While the team has inrecent years consisted only of Gump’s employeesDiana Cramer and Tina Schulkamp, the powerful duoconsistently raises thousands for each event. Last
year, they brought in $7,000; since they joined theteam in 1995, Gump’s has raised close to $95,000for AIDS Walk San Francisco.
Diana was a leader in the fight against AIDS fromthe epidemic’s start. She wasn’t afraid to speakfrankly and openly to educate others, even in theworkplace. During those early years, she puttogether pamphlets and held info-sessions atGump’s to teach co-workers about the transmissionof HIV.
Tina recalls the dark and difficult days of theAIDS crisis that led her to join AIDS Walk SanFrancisco, prior to walking with Gump’s: “In the earlyeighties we began losing friends to this new disease. So, by the time the AIDS Walk began, we had lostmany, many friends to AIDS.” Joining was one wayshe could show her support and take action.
Diana and Tina continue to walk and raise moneyeach year, in honor of those they have lost, to dispelignorance about the disease, and to one day endAIDS. Their determined work and compassionateaction make them model Gump’s employees as theycontinue the tradition of service for people livingwith HIV/AIDS started by the company a quarter-century ago.
Gump’s powerful Team Leader duo, Diana Cramerand Tina Schulkamp, consistently raises thousandsof dollars each year for AIDS Walk San Francisco.

Deak Van Arsdale began participating in AIDSWalk San Francisco in the early 1990s, and overthe past 20 years has become an essential and
beloved asset to the AIDS Walk office. As a psychotherapist at the Mt. Zion Crisis Clinic,
Deak saw firsthand the devastation that AIDS broughtto San Francisco in the early years of the crisis. In thefour years that he worked at the Mt. Zion Crisis Clinicin the mid-1980s, one-third of the patients he sawwere suffering from HIV/AIDS, and had nowhere elseto turn. In an effort to help save the community heloved, Deak jumped into grassroots efforts to fight thedisease. He spent much of his free time volunteeringwith various AIDS service organizations, and workedwith a professor from San Jose State University tostart one of the South Bay’s first HIV/AIDS hotlines.
Deak’s efforts supporting those with HIV/AIDS ledhim to participate in his first AIDS Walk San Franciscoin 1990. He then discovered other ways to becomeinvolved, first as a day-of-event volunteer, and then asa frequent volunteer at the AIDS Walk office.
Over the years, Deak realized that even on dayshe didn’t feel like “stuffing one more darn envelope,”he was still serving the greater good. “Some dayswere for me, and some days were for you,” Deakreflects. His contributions to the AIDS Walk stretch farbeyond stuffing envelopes. Deak started what hasnow become a yearly potluck lunch at the beginning ofevery AIDS Walk campaign. From his ownmanagerial experience, Deak knew that a cohesivestaff “works better together, does a better job, raisesmore money, and overall, has a bigger effect onpeople.” He couldn’t think of a better way to helpsupport the AIDS Walk staff than sitting around a tableof food. To this day, Deak calls the office every Marchto set up a date for the “New Staff Potluck Lunch.”
It is impossible to overlook the fondness Deakexudes when he talks about the AIDS Walk and hishistory of volunteering. According to Deak, “if youaren’t here with the volunteers, you don’t know whatyou are missing.”

Bank of America:Visionary Corporate Leader in
Fight Against AIDS
By Lauryn Booras
AIDS Walk San Francisco is proud to partner onceagain with Bank of America, an organization thatshares the AIDS Walk’s passion to give back to a
legendarily loyal San Francisco community. Bank of America first became a sponsor in 1991, and is one of the
AIDS Walk’s earliest corporate supporters. At a time whensubstantial fear and stigma still surrounded HIV/AIDS, Bank ofAmerica’s leaders showed extraordinary vision and courage bychoosing to support those living with the disease. “Rather thanshying away from a cause that was at the time not universallyembraced, we’re proud that Bank of America was among the firstmajor national institutions to take a stand in the fight against AIDS,”says Ximena Delgado, Senior Vice President and San FranciscoMarket Manager, Global Corporate Social Responsibility. “And we
are honored to carry on that tradition today as a Principal Sponsorand as Sign-In Host of AIDS Walk San Francisco.”
Bank of America’s strong support of the AIDS Walk came not onlyfrom their executives at the top, but from other employees, who, ledby veteran Team Leader Dave Studach, formed the first Bank ofAmerica team in 1988—AIDS Walk San Francisco’s second year. The Bank of America team was the number one fundraising team inboth 1998 and 2004, and has consistently been at or near the topevery year.
Bank of America has through its sponsorship and teamfundraising contributed and raised hundreds of thousands of dollarsfor AIDS Walk San Francisco. Sponsors such as Bank of America, and their employees who lead the charge, are a crucial componentto the success of the event each year. The bank’s leadership duringthe early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis helped draw even morecorporate support, which has assisted in the vital progress madeagainst the epidemic in the Bay Area and nationally. We could not bemore grateful for their continued dedication.
Inspired by those who make a life by what they give.

Capturing a Community in an Image
• A quarter-century of AIDS activism.
• 25 years of compassion, remembrance, and empowerment.
• The commemoration of two and a half decades of a community fighting for action and embracing their friends living with HIV and AIDS.
How do you visualize these inspirationaland, at the same time, elusive ideas? That was the challenge facing the
producers of AIDS Walk San Francisco, asthey began to develop graphic concepts forthe 25th annual event.
Producer and Founder, Craig R. Miller, recollects, “We were trying to emphasize thesignificance of this milestone while alsoconveying the sheer exuberance that is ahallmark of AIDS Walk San Francisco.”
Miller, who has a long and successful trackrecord of producing AIDS Walk campaigndesigns and messages, nevertheless thoughtit wise to look beyond his own organization forcreative input. Enter PureRed Creative!
Miller recalled seeing an ad that PureRedCreative designed for one of its clients,Duane Reade—a large drugstore chain inNew York City. The piece was being used byDuane Reade in promoting their participationin AIDS Walk New York, another eventproduced by Miller and his organization ofAIDS activists, MZA Events. “The design was
two-color, simple in form, but very powerful incontent,” he remembered. The MZA teamthen approached PureRed Creative to workwith them in designing something for AIDSWalk San Francisco that was full-color andcaptured the passionate community that isthe heart of the event.
Kaitlyn McCauley, Account Executive atPureRed Creative, explains, “Our team wasthrilled to participate and eagerly went to workfashioning a design that would evoke all ofthe emotions that are evident on the day ofAIDS Walk San Francisco. We haveemployees from all over the Bay Area, so wefeel connected to this cause and blessed towork for a company that encouragescommunity outreach.
Brandon Voss, the artist who created the“Ribbon-Heart” design for the Duane Readecampaign, refers to the style as “ModernFolk.” He wanted the symbol to reflect ahumanist, hand-done quality.
The final touch, and the one that electrifies
this design, is the multi-colored lines thatradiate from the heart. Perry Hunter, VicePresident Group Creative Director atPureRed Creative, describes the conceptionof those pulsating rays. “There are so manyreasons why people participate in AIDS WalkSan Francisco. They walk as a memorial. They walk to show their support. To educate,to commemorate, to eradicate. We decidedthat each of these reasons could berepresented by a single color, and together, itwould be a rainbow of sensations pulsingfrom the heart.”
The “Heart-Burst” acts as a beacon as ithangs in store windows, BART trains, and onstreet poles all over the Bay Area, sending amessage that the fight against AIDS is asvibrant and essential as it was 25 years ago.
The ‘Heart-Burst’ design actsas a beacon…sending amessage that the fight againstAIDS is as vibrant andessential as it was 25 yearsago.

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA)Network is, for the first time, joining AIDS Walk San
Francisco as a fundraising team tobroaden their message of LGBTsupport and include HIV/AIDSawareness as part of their mission. The GSA Network is a youthleadership organization thatconnects school-based LGBTalliance groups to one another andto community resources throughpeer support, leadershipdevelopment, and training.
With nearly half of all new HIVinfections in the United Statesoccurring in people under the age of25, HIV prevention and awarenesseducation for youth remains vital.Creating a safe and acceptingenvironment for that dialogue isequally important. By aligning withAIDS Walk San Francisco, the student leaders of the GSA will be wellprepared to educate their peers and help stop new infections.
“We look forward to a long and close relationship with the GSANetwork,” says Mehera May, Event Director of AIDS Walk SanFrancisco, “and we are excited to help motivate the next generation ofcommitted young leaders to take action and promote tolerance whenit comes to HIV and AIDS.”
The GSA recently launched anew campaign to fight homophobiaand transphobia in schools.Building off columnist DanSavage’s popular “It Gets Better”campaign, the GSA started the“Make It Better” initiative toempower teens to stand up againstLGBT discrimination in theirschools. By learning more abouttheir rights, how to support othersthrough a crisis, and how toorganize, GSA members areworking to create a schoolenvironment that fosters aware-ness and compassion for allstudents regardless of sexualorientation.
For the GSA Network, AIDSWalk San Francisco represents an important step forward in taking onother key issues that affect the LGBT community. “It’s wonderful to seethe students’ sense of activism carry through to the fight against AIDS,”says Mehera. “In rallying around AIDS Walk San Francisco thissummer, GSA youth will not only be able to deliver their message to awider audience, they will also expand their horizons by engaging withthe broader Bay Area community.”

The AIDS Walk $100,000 Club: Highlighting our Fundraising Superstars
AIDS Walk San Francisco is drivenby the hard work, dedication, andcompassion of all its partici-
pants. Quite a few, however, havereached incredible fundraisingheights, making them members of theexclusive “$100,000 Club.” For some,it has been a nearly a quarter-centuryof effort; for others, it has been but afew years. We are extremely gratefulto all of them, and here we highlightfour of our superstars.
Bill Dowhas beenwalking withAIDS Walk SanFrancisco since1994, and eachyear he strivesto keep hism o m e n t u mgoing and hisf u n d r a i s i n ggrowing. After losing a co-worker to AIDS,Bill joined the fight—and never lookedback. Today, Bill walks so that he can be“a voice for those who [cannot] speak forthemselves.” His drive and determinationhave helped him raise an incredible sum.“Nothing in this world is worth doing ifyou don’t give 100 percent,” says Bill ofhis highly successful fundraising, which currently stands at $130,000.
Max Kirkeberg moved to theBay Area in 1965, after completinghis education in Michigan. Whenhe arrived in San Francisco, heknew he had found home. In 1988,Max got wind of the 2nd annualAIDS Walk San Francisco anddecided he had to be a part of it. Hewas scared to death of this newepidemic sweeping the communityand the country, and felt compelledto fight back. His fundraising efforts over the past 24 yearshave allowed him to do just that. In addition, his AIDS Walkparticipation early on helped him find the courage to comeout as a gay man to many friends and family members. Theygreeted the news with acceptance, understanding, and lovefor both him and this cause. Max has raised well over the$100,000 mark as a Team Leader for St. FrancisLutheran/SFSU Geography, and he will continue to do allhe can for his community, for as long as it takes.
Gina Wulff beganher dedication to AIDSWalk San Francisco as aStar Walker and TeamLeader for “50 Reasons+” in 2008. In its briefhistory, the team hasalready raised morethan $100,000. Ginadecided to celebrate a“milestone” birthday withAIDS Walk San Francisco in 2008, and shecontinues the tradition today. “I ask my friendsand family to celebrate my birthday byparticipating in the AIDS Walk with me. I knew itwould be the best present anyone could give me,”Gina says. “Educating people about the diseaseis one of the most valuable resources there is inthe fight, and I am proud to help sponsor sucheducation with the funds raised by the AIDSWalk.”
Steven Sams has been a consistent presence at AIDSWalk San Francisco for over two decades. He led the AT&Tteam for a good part of the last 25 years, through manycorporate transitions and with great success. “Since westarted the fundraising team for AIDS Walk San Francisco, each of us has faced the loss of many family and friends tothis insidious disease,” says Steven. “For our lost lovedones and for all those who still battle HIV and AIDS—theHMOs, the medications, the complications—we all feel adeep, abiding compassion and a duty to act.” Steven is ashining example of this compassion, having personallyraised $396,812 for AIDS Walk San Francisco.

AIDS Walk San Francisco Star WalkersBy Leif Green
The fundamental success of AIDS Walk San Francisco hasalways depended on a vast community of passionate andpersuasive individuals. Each participant does his or her
best to raise money for the fight against AIDS – some peopleraise $50 while others manage to raise thousands. Year afteryear, the collective power of these dedicated supportersgenerates millions of dollars for San Francisco AIDSFoundation and HIV/AIDS programs and services throughoutthe Bay Area.
AIDS Walk San Francisco is extremely grateful to everyonewho raises funds, but we do like to shine a special spotlight ofrecognition on those whose fundraising achievement isparticularly exceptional – the members of the AIDS Walk SanFrancisco Star Walkers ClubTM.
The Star Walkers Club is comprised of participants whopledge to raise $1,000 or more. Hundreds of participants reachthat goal; many go far beyond that.
On the morning of the event, Star Walkers who do reachtheir $1,000 goal receive a Star Walker crown, which signals toeveryone that they have achieved incredible fundraisingsuccess. As these ”crowned heads of fundraising” make theirway along the 10-kilometer route, many other participantscheer and applaud.
“Since they are fundraising royalty, it is not uncommon tosee people bowing and curtseying in admiration!” remarksStar Walker Coordinator Derek Collard. “The Star Walkers takegreat pride in their 24-Karat cardboard crowns, and we want tomake as much of a fuss as possible to show our appreciation,”Collard adds.
In addition to receiving commemorative awards, thesefundraising experts will be rewarded with a limited edition StarWalker lapel pin. Star Walkers also attend the exclusive StarWalker Breakfast on the morning of AIDS Walk San Francisco.
If you would like more information about the Star WalkersClub, please call the AIDS Walk San Francisco office at415.615.WALK or visit the AIDS Walk San Francisco website ataidswalk.net. There is still plenty of time to become a memberof the fundraising elite!
