  • Dear Members and Friends,

I’m visiting family in Minnesota this week, celebrating my mother’s 80th birthday, so Sunday’s Installation Ceremony remains a mystery to Holly and me. We apologize for our absence but assume the day was a real treat for all parties. I’ll be seeking our Facebook pages while we’re on the road, to get caught up on the festivities. Our congregation is very fortunate to have had Peter’s guidance this past year. It is comforting to know this relationship is now formally recognized.

A couple of news items that may or may not have been addressed in this past Sunday’s service, need to be mentioned. The board of Directors voted this past week to initiate a new ad-hoc committee that will be called the Flood Response Committee. Its charge will in some ways overlap the areas of the Building Task Force, the Finance Committee, and

perhaps Design and Aesthetics. This committee will be comprised of any friend or member of the church who has a perspective that could be useful addressing our resolution to the flood damage, the legal and/or financial avenues that might aid our present situation, or problem solving for possible future flood occurrences.

The Board believes we can gain useful information at this time by listening to all interested members of the congregation who either have questions or previous experiences to share. To that end, an organizational meeting has been established for 6:00 p.m., Wed., June 2nd. All our committee heads who would normally meet for the Committee Leadership Council will be invited to participate in this discussion. Any friend or member of the church is also invited to attend.

On a second front, our church will meet again for a weekend

with Mr. Dave Rickard, financial advisor from the UUA. This weekend “seminar,” from June 4th-6th, will be a training session for those involved in the congregation’s fall capital campaign drive. We did well this spring, meeting our stewardship goal, so pats on our backs all around. That was one of the many steps that were necessary to get our capital campaign drive started off on the right foot. Mr. Rickard is aware that we have steeper challenges to meet since the flood waters receded, but he is committed to our success. We know for a fact that we will be his last capital campaign drive before he retires, so we’re assured of his best effort. For further details regarding the capital campaign and what you can do to help, see Charlie Pickle.

    My best to you all,

    Brent

  • The Adult Forum May 30. Theme Two: Quest for the Afterlife. Lecture Seven: Towers and Tombs of Sumeria Scope: The decipherment of cuneiform script in the 19th century led to the discovery of a hitherto unknown people in southern Mesopotamia: the Sumerians. One of the first of their cities to be explored was Ur, hometown of Abraham, according to Genesis. In the 1920s, archaeologist Leonard Woolley discovered royal tombs of the 3rd millennium B.C. with fine mausoleums for the bodies and treasures of Ur's kings and queens, as well as outer zones filled with dozens of human sacrifices, apparently willing members of the court. At nearby Eridu, the "first city" of Sumerian myth, archaeologists excavated an even older urban cemetery of more than 1,000 graves. Some men, women, and children were

accompanied to the next world by their dogs, and one dog had even been supplied with a bone for food in the afterlife. The poignancy of these tombs echoes the anguish over death expressed in the Sumerian epic of Gilgamesh. June 6. Theme Two: Quest for the Afterlife. Lecture Eight: Tomb of the First Emperor of China Scope: The terracotta army of Qin Shi huangdi, first unifier and emperor of China, has surpassed Peking Man as the best-known Chinese archaeological discovery. The emperor died in 210 B.C., but his extraordinary tomb complex with its thousands of statues of soldiers, horses, and chariots had been in preparation for years. Most recognize the artistry of the life-size figures; few reflect

on the religious beliefs that inspired them: an attempt to achieve immortality through an extension of traditional Chinese ancestor worship. The warriors took the place of human sacrifices and would have provided the emperor with a powerful escort when he entered the next world. The actual tomb, which has yet to be excavated, was a model of the cosmos. Ideas of divine kingship that took generations to evolve in Egypt had emerged in China within the lifespan of a single ruler. These summaries are by the lecturer, Professor John R. Hale.

The Adult Forum meets almost every Sunday, 10:00 am-10:45 am in the Emerson Room at the UU Church. Please try to arrive a little before 10 am so we can “check in” with each other before starting the DVD as close as possible to 10 am. That should give us enough time for discussion after the half hour lecture.

We all knew that the installation ceremony of May 23 would mark a significant transition in the life of our church as it formally institutionalized the relationship of minister and congregation.

But “institutionalized” hardly captures the spirit of the day, does it? Rev. Elwood Sturtevant, my mentor for ministry this year, told us that the day was the 17th anniversary of his installation: not just to the day, but to the hour. Rev. Carl Scovel kindly served as my spiritual advisor for my last several years in Boston. He delivered a simple, yet profound sermon on the many ministries we all offer our church community, many of which are too often overlooked. Rev. Claudia Ramisch of the UU Congregation of Owensboro appealed to the congregation to support the work of the Living Tradition Fund, a source of

financial support for divinity school students in ministerial formation. I overheard a senior minister say that it was the most effective such appeal he’d heard “and I’ve heard a lot—a lot of them.”

Jennifer Hundley Batts and I worked with the children before the morning service to prepare them for the chalice lighting. What a beautiful and touching job they did. Katrina Phelps movingly delivered a piece called “In the Midst of a World” that, for me, profoundly captures the spiritual core of what ministry is. Of the many moments, some simple, some profound, that will leave a lasting impact on me, nothing, I think, will last longer

than the emotional response I felt rise when hearing the voices of Katrina Phelps, Tracy Willoughby, and Forrest Halford as, one by one, they came together in the singing of “One Voice” by Ruth Moody. “This is the sound of one voice One spirit, one voice The sound of one who makes a choice This is the sound of one voice... This is the sound of all of us Singing with the love and the will to trust… This is the sound of all of us.”

    A Note from the Minister

  • News from our Congregational Meeting New officers and board members were elected at the Congregation Meeting on Sunday, May 16. They are: John Downing, President; John Forman, Vice-president and President-elect; Debbie Chandler, Treasurer; and Mary Ann Johnson, Secretary. New board members are: Jennifer Hundley Batts, Jim Haynes, and Jerry Gibbs. A change in terms for membership and a consequent change in our by-laws was approved. The new budget of $201,000 was voted on and approved. Also approved was an increase of 5% in the portion of the budget being supported by the pledge drive.

The voices were gentle and strong, lovely and harmonious. They held us together in bonds of love- - a truly fitting introduction to the sermon where Carl reminded us that “love is not just an emotion, but an action.” There are many more to thank and many more I will thank in the days to come and in this newsletter, too. Gabriel and Nathaniel Mo delivered a postlude that captured, for me, all the dark and dynamic and bright and joyous and, in the end, profound dimensions of ministry. We all sat in silence and let the meaning make its way through the mystery of the music of J.S. Bach. The music lives on. So will the memories. So may the spiritual sustenance of this ceremony of union. So may our work together. Do I hear an “Amen”?

Did someone say something about a capital campaign? I look forward to seeing you all in church.

    ~Peter Connolly
