Iwould like to welcome you to explore our exciting2011–2012 Performing Arts Series at Stephens
Auditorium. I believe that within this brochure you
will be pleasantly surprised with the variety and quality
of the artists that will grace the stage of Stephens. We
have organized the brochure by performance categories
so if you are personally inclined to one art form over
another, you can easily find it and learn about the shows
that interest you. I would, however, encourage you to
learn about all of this season’s offerings. While each of
us has our personal favorites, sampling another type of
entertainment might open a door to something that you
may find more enjoyable than you expected.
Each year members of the Performing Arts Council and my staff dedicate an
enormous amount of time to review artists’ materials, attend
meetings and provide valuable insights about an original list of over
100 possible attractions. Their work and assistance is instrumental in
creating the series presented to you in this brochure. So, as you learn
about and choose the shows that will create your personal series,
I am positive that you will find Amazing Artists who will
provide Powerful Performances and Extraordinary
Experiences for you!
Sincerely,
Mark North, General Manager

Content Disclaimer: Doubt: A Parable contains mature content that may be unsuitable for children.
DOUBT: A PARABLECharismatic young Father Flynnbegins a sermon by asking, “What doyou do when you’re not sure?”Audiences soon learn that little iscertain in John Patrick Shanley’sbrilliant, aptly titled play. Althoughset in 1964, Doubt is as timely astomorrow’s newspaper. Is FatherFlynn using his position as teacherand coach to encourage youngstersor take advantage of them? Is hard-headed Sister Aloysius, the schoolprincipal, protecting children fromharm, or is she falsely accusing aninnocent man of a shocking betrayalof trust?
Since its initial sold-out productionoff-Broadway, Doubt has enthralledand stunned audiences whilegarnering critical acclaim. Winner of aPulitzer Prize and a Tony Award®,Doubt is a rare evening of theatrethat entertains and captivatesemotionally, psychologically, andintellectually. In an extraordinarytheatrical sleight of hand, Shanleyleaves audiences no simple answers,no pat solutions, and no easy outs. This is theatre that brings audiencesto the edge of their seats andintroduces topics that will bediscussed long after the final curtain.
MACBETH“Fair is foul and foul is fair” in thisacclaimed British/American touringcompany’s production of Shakespeare’sclassic tragedy.
In this brutal and chaotic tale, nothing isas it seems and men combat their ownmadness and fates. A prophecy ofpower drives the Scottish generalMacbeth and his wife along a murderousand maddening path of war, insanity, guilt, and death. Superstitiously referredto as “the Scottish play,” Macbeth hasenjoyed considerable success despite itsnotoriety as a cursed play, and AquilaTheatre’s bold interpretation works tobring renewed excitement to thiswickedly profound work.
Ghosts, witches and many ofShakespeare’s most famous lines makeMacbeth one of the most enduring andoften performed works of the Bard.
A classically trained, modernly hiptroupe, Aquila breathes fresh life and fireinto this troubling tragedy, with The NewYorker describing their productions as“The classics made relevant with superbacting and clever staging.”
This tour is part of a National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman’sSpecial Award for Aquila Theatre’s project, Ancient Greeks / Modern Lives, whichuses live theatrical events, reading groups and lectures in cultural institutions toinspire people to come together to read, see, and think about classical literatureand how it continues to influence and invigorate American cultural life.
