2011-2012 Fall

The most successful students are those whose parents are involved in their education. These students tend to earn better grades, score higher on standardized tests, have better attendance records and show a more positive attitude toward school.

Effective involvement happens when parents have access to information and resources that encourage children to succeed. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is offering CMS Parent University to help parents learn what they can do to support their children’s academic success and well-being.

Parent University, which is a collaborative effort partnering with many agencies and organizations throughout the area, is a dynamic compilation of FREE course offerings, activities and resources in locations throughout the county. Parent University’s offerings concentrate on four primary areas:

Strand I is Parenting Awareness. These offerings provide information that can empower parents to raise confident, educated children ready for the 21st Century. Strengthening parents means strengthening children.

Strand II is Helping Your Child Learn in the 21st Century. These offerings provide parents information about how they can support their children’s academic opportunities and challenges today.

Strand III is Health and Wellness. These offerings support information and activities to help families build healthy lifestyles physically as well as emotionally.

Strand IV is Personal Growth and Development. These offerings will help parents to grow personally and professionally, so they can become the most effective advocates for their children.

“I attended the “Can We Talk? – Effective Parent-Teacher Conferences” workshop,

and I learned a lot. The workshop helped me feel confident as I went to my conference, and it gave me some ideas

regarding the kinds of questions I should be asking. I left the conference with lots of ways to help my child at home with

reading and math. I really felt like I was a partner in the conference.”

Every student experiences academic difficulties on occasion and there are about as many reasons as there are students. Sometimes the problems are serious enough that if something isn’t done, that student may fall too far behind to catch up. Wouldn’t it be great if we could come up with a way to provide students who are having difficulties with a specialized plan for learning? Now we can! Personalized Education Plans (PEPs) are a tool used by schools to keep an eye on problem areas and provide strategies to address them. This class will talk about Personalized Education Plans for students who are experiencing difficulties in Literacy & Language Arts.

Understanding the Common Core Standard Initiative – A state-led effort to establish a shared set of clear

educational standards for English language arts and mathematicsThe standards have been informed by the best available evidence and the highest state standards across the country and globe and designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators, so they reflect both our aspirations for our children and the realities of the classroom. These standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce and that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. The standards are benchmarked to international standards to guarantee that our students are competitive in the emerging global marketplace.

This workshop helps families better understand the Common Core State Standard Initiative, what they mean, and why these standards are important.

2011-2012 Fall

n Parent University once again increased its partnerships by working with agencies such as the C.W. Williams Community Health Center, Goodwill Industries, Latin American Coalition, Charlotte Family Housing, Salvation Army Center of Hope, Battered Women’s Shelter, A Child’s Place, Charlotte Housing Authority, Department of Social Services, various foster parent programs, Truancy Court, Jail North and Jail Central, Park and Recreation Teen and Family Summits, Johnson C. Smith University Upward Bound program, Freedom Schools, YMCA Starfish literacy program, Young Black Males Leadership Conference, Compare Foods, NorthLake Mall LiveWell Center, Melange Health Solutions, Charlotte Links, Inc., Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Providence United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, Nexus Church, and numerous houses of worship and other organizations to offer courses, workshops, and trainings.

n The partnership with Leadership Charlotte was stronger than ever this year. For the third year, the Leadership Charlotte class adopted Parent University as their community service project. A team was assigned to learning communities and a designated school to support Parent University classes and build parent leadership at the school. They provided support for the presentation, meals, incentives, childcare, promotion/marketing, and much more. This year, specialized teams were created based on the expertise of the professional leaders within the Leadership Charlotte organization. Their skills were used in the areas of grant writing, focus groups to improve efficiencies in logistics and spending, and technology.

n More than 400 CMS teachers, administrators, counselors, as well as community and business leaders offered in-kind support for Parent University by serving as presenters, advisory council members, curriculum review committee members, and volunteers. Volunteers have been involved and supported Parent University through the Parent University Advisory Council, Curriculum Review Committee, Friends of Parent University committee, workshop presenters and facilitators, host site volunteers, Family Fun and Information Day volunteers, and much more.

n Parent University has secured more than $900,000 in support since the program began in September 2008.

n CMS launched Parent University in the fall of 2008. Since that time, more than 40,000 individuals have participated in free Parent University workshops and Family Fun and Information Days.

n The CMS Family and Community Services Department participated in more than 100 community events, festivals, fairs, and information gatherings to share information and resources with parents to increase student achievement and school success during the year.

n In April 2011, Parent University had its most successful Family Fun and Information Day to date. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Initiative was taken to the next level by including the Arts. This year’s theme was, “Going from STEM to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). This event had over 3,000 participants and was a great success because of one of our many great partnerships with the Arts and Science Council.

n In the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters, Parent University offered over 70 workshop topics with more than 9,000 participants attending the 351 free workshops and events offered.

n Of the 351 free workshops and events offered, more than 7,000 of the 9,913 participants had children in the district’s neediest schools including Title I and FOCUS schools.

n Parent University developed new partnerships with local media sources to bring current information to parents on different educational topics. Parent University partnered with the Public Access Channel, CALBTRAC, and Middle Gray Media to produce a parent production on “Preparing for the End of Grade and End of Course Tests” which was widely shown and distributed to parents in schools. A bi-weekly Spanish radio show was sponsored through Norsan Multimedia and educational news articles were published in Hola Noticas and Mi Gente newspapers.

n Course offerings to understand the impact and need for parent involvement in education and how to empower, educate, and engage families took on a new form this year through partnerships with TEACH Charlotte and by expanding course offerings to assist educators in how to effectively engage diverse families.
