I am delighted to have this opportunity to invite you to read
our Faculty of Education viewbook in order to consider the
programs that you might wish to take at the University of
Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Teaching is a
fascinating and exciting career.
If you are currently in a teaching position and planning to
upgrade your qualifications or if you are new to teachingand planning on entering our Concurrent or Consecutive
Education programs, there are many exciting courses that
you can explore in this book and on our website.
Whether you teach in the heart of a city such as Toronto
or Vancouver or work with children in rural Canada, typically,
as an elementary school teacher you can expect to nurture
the minds of more than 1,000 students throughout your
career. If you teach grades 7 to 12, you will have the
opportunity to form significant relationships with morethan 6,000 students. If you think back to the teachers
who made a difference in your life, you will recall that they
devoted a great deal of their time and themselves to
encouraging you to complete challenging learning activities
while they also attempted to guide your spiritual, social
and intellectual growth.
As a 21st-century teacher, your work will include the
traditional tasks of preparing imaginative and creative
lessons and assessing your students’ many assignments. In addition, you’ll also apply your knowledge of the latest
in educational technology and resources. Should you
choose to pursue a Bachelor of Education, Master of Arts,
Master of Education or graduate diploma at UOIT, our
talented professors will be happy to help you become
skilled at teaching in a technology-rich learning environment.
We believe that e-learning will be an important part of
every teacher’s repertoire in the future, and we are Canada’s
leading Faculty of Education in providing teachers with thebest theories and practices to be effective e-learning
instructors.
Best wishes with your decision about where you would like

In just a few short years, we’ve established an outstanding
Faculty of Education at UOIT. We offer a five-year Concurrent
Bachelor of Science (Honours)/Bachelor of Education program
in collaboration with our Faculty of Science that will prepare
you to teach at the intermediate and senior (I/S) levels
(grades 7 to 12). We also offer a one-year Consecutive
Bachelor of Education degree that allows you to teach at the
primary and junior (P/J) levels (junior kindergarten to Grade6) or I/S levels. We offer leading-edge preparation programs
for teachers in a wide range of areas, including math, science,
computer studies, literacy, geography, physical education and
history.
At UOIT, we encourage you to think deeply about how people
learn in various subject areas and at different ages. You will
be challenged to consider how diversity in ability, cultural
background and social and religious experiences of your
future students might influence the way you approach teaching. You learn to be thoughtful and critical about the role of
technology in teaching, and you will develop strong skills in
using learning technologies. You also study the legal and
professional context of teaching in Ontario, classroom
management, assessment and much more.
We have graduated excellent teacher candidates since our
first year of enrolment and they have found rewarding
teaching careers in a variety of settings. Our Concurrent and
Consecutive Bachelor of Education programs are innovative
and filled with challenges and opportunities. They will change
your life and help you to positively influence the lives of others.
EXPERT PROFESSORS HELP YOU SHAPE THENEXT GENERATION OF LEARNERS

experienced teachers themselves. They will inspire you to
push your boundaries of thinking and learning, and broaden
your knowledge of the education field.
Supportive and highly approachable, our professors are
dedicated to helping you shape the next generation of
learners. In addition to expert full-time faculty, we have many
highly qualified part-time faculty and faculty advisors. The

Teacher candidates at UOIT are immersed in a leading-edge
learning environment that allows you to be connected to and
supported by your professors and peers. You will learn to
use new software and technologies that are critical to your
own learning experience. This will enable you to understand
how to integrate technology into your classroom practice so
that when you graduate, you will have strong skills and be
equipped to effectively use technology for teaching andlearning opportunities.
LAPTOP LEARNING
As a UOIT student, you use a laptop computer that gives you
a significant educational advantage. To help get you started,
we provide an orientation program that shows you how to get
the most from your laptop. You will use your laptop exten-
sively when:
:: Communicating with faculty staff and peers;
:: Developing teaching lessons;
:: Gathering research information;
:: Organizing work and making presentations in class; and
:: Preparing assignments.
Most courses in the Concurrent and Consecutive programs
have an online component, which ranges from the posting of
class content and assignments to engaging in discussionsand sharing new learning. Your laptop features the latest
hardware and a rich assortment of program-related software
to ensure you have equal access to technology, resources
and services. Inside or outside the classroom, you can make
quality digital presentations, conduct Internet research,
communicate with professors and other students and have
seamless access to all online resources. Our campus is
designed for you to use your laptop in classrooms, labs,
the library, residences, food spaces and meeting places.
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD TECHNOLOGY
Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) technology is increasingly being
used in classrooms to actively engage students in the
learning process and to facilitate access to digital resources.Recognizing the growing importance of touch sensitive
technologies, many of our teaching areas are equipped with
IWBs called SMART Boards. To help you connect to SMART
Boards in order to create lesson plans, your laptop is
equipped with SMART Tools and SMART Notebook software.
The knowledge and skills that you learn using these tools is
easily transferable to other IWB technologies.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LAB/CLASSROOM
The Science and Technology lab/classroom was designed to
give you the look and feel of a science classroom and the
opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience. In this
classroom you will perform and design experiments and
activities that are relevant to teaching general science,
chemistry, biology and physics. The room is outfitted with a
data projector, SMART Board and the equipment found inelementary and secondary school classrooms in Ontario.
Employers rave about our graduates’ confidence and skill
with technology. We consider the laptop to be the first step
in the development of technologies that will revolutionize
teaching and learning, and we want you to be a revolutionary
teacher.
We’re committed to giving you even more value for your
education and your investment in technology while studyingat UOIT.
“UOIT gave me the opportunities
necessary to feel confident and
prepared for my career as a
teacher. The technology focus
will allow me to reach students
in a new way.”

Early in the new year, only candidates under consideration
for admission will be contacted to arrange an interview, and
selected applicants will be sent offers of admission in early
April.
The personal profile is an essential part of the application.
You should outline your strengths, highlight your teaching
and teaching-related experiences and explain why you wishto become a teacher. For further information, contact the
Faculty of Education Recruitment and Admissions office at
The academic reference helps UOIT assess your academic
abilities. It should come directly from a professor at an
institution that you recently attended. If you are not a recent
graduate or have completed your studies internationally,
UOIT will accept an additional professional reference. In this
circumstance, a second professional reference does not
place you at a disadvantage.
The professional reference is used to evaluate your potential
for teaching and should come from an employer or supervisor
who evaluated you in a working or volunteer environment
related to teaching.
Note: Students educated outside Canada or the United
States must supply additional documentation. Information
for international applicants is available atwww.education.uoit.ca.

Education as a concept is rapidly changing in its objectives,
content and modalities.
The role of technology in this dynamic process has been, so
far, both deep and broad. It has transformed the way we think,
work, live, socialize and learn. Our social economy is moving
from industrial models to collective intelligence development.
As this fundamental shift occurs, there is a need for specialists
in education who understand both the global and specificroles and impact that technology has on learning. Society
also needs these individuals to be in positions where they
can offer the kind of informed leadership that is necessary
to prepare future generations for an ever-evolving reality.
At UOIT, the graduate programs in education are designed
specifically to prepare you to be future leaders and specialists
in learning and technology, and able to meet the needs of
your constituents within this social context. Our Master of Arts (MA), Master of Education (MEd) and Graduate Diploma
programs are unique and leading-edge in both their objectives
and approaches to learning online. Not only do these programs
deal with the most recent issues around the interactions
between digital technology and education, but the professors
use approaches that favour collaborative learning,
co-construction of knowledge and peer tutoring.
Finally, all of this is designed with you in mind and built on
the university’s institutional strength in digital technology andthe Faculty of Education’s focus on learning with technology.
MASTER OF ARTS ANDMASTER OF EDUCATION DEGREES
In the MA and MEd in Education and Digital Technologies
programs, you will take a selection of required core and
elective courses to complete a total of 30 credits. As part
of the 30 credits, students in the MA program complete athesis and in the MEd students complete a project or portfolio.
As a Faculty of Education graduate student, you will complete
your courses online with a strong component of video
conferencing meetings. Using this technology, you have the
opportunity to speak directly with your professors and
colleagues in full video and sound and with multimedia
capabilities, on a weekly basis during scheduled classes.
All of this from the comfort of your own home, anywhere in
the world.
The field of education and digital technologies within the MA
and MEd programs build on UOIT’s institutional strengths in
information and communication technologies.
WHERE YOUR GRADUATE-LEVEL EDUCATION CAN TAKE YOU
These research-based programs are intended for future leadersand specialists interested in education and digital technology.
They are designed to prepare you to meet the needs of your
constituents. For example, elementary or secondary teachers
and principals wanting to offer leadership in projects involving
digital technologies in their schools and school boards,
college-level instructors, individuals from professional fields
such as nursing or other professional areas involved in training
and education, or anyone with a personal or professional
interest in teaching and learning in a digital context candevelop a highly sought after expertise in this field.
These programs can also lead you to careers as online or
distance learning specialists in colleges or universities,
directors or co-ordinators of e-learning services, e-learning
designers or project leaders for boards and higher-education
institutions. They can ultimately lead to doctoral studies and
a research position in this new and rapidly developing field.
