Academics
Here every class is taught by a professor, not a teaching
assistant, creating a deep, personal student/faculty
relationship that begins day one. This is an engaged,
energetic faculty with global connections in their fields.
The classes are small; the horizon is huge.
With more than 40 areas of study to explore, at
Emmanuel College you will flex muscles of both the
mind and the heart as you develop the ability to
acquire and evaluate knowledge, and the imagination
to shape new ways of perceiving, thinking and creating.
This is the basis of a Catholic liberal arts and sciences
education. To develop your intellectual potential, your
sense of self and your commitment to serve others in the
community. To become a critical thinker, an ethical decision
maker and a contributing member of the world around you.

At Emmanuel, Boston is your extended classroom
We live in a vibrant international, culturally rich,
sports-crazy and intellectually engaged city, and
we take advantage of it at every turn.
This is your introduction to the world. Ideas grow,
passions are sparked and connections are made
when you begin to think globally and creatively.
Emmanuel College was founded on these ideas.
And on the mission to open doors through education
and to lead, to act and to make a difference in this world.
For art class, you won’t just look at slides of Claude
Monet’s Water Lilies, you’ll stand before the painting
itself in the Museum of Fine Arts. In chemistry, you
won’t just read about pH levels, runoff and ecosystems,
you’ll analyze them in the collection of brooks, ponds
and culverts known as Boston’s Muddy River.Emmanuel College

or sociology, history or business give local organizations
meaningful support, and you significant experience
that extends your classroom out into the community.
Any college can impart lessons about life.

Honors Program
every year, there are new students who demonstrate
superior academic ability and promise.
If that’s you, you’ll be invited to participate in a four-year
academic and co-curricular program to sharpen your
critical thinking, enhance your communications skills
and open doors to fascinating research opportunities in
a wide range of disciplines.
This program connects rigorous, discussion-based
study with complementary theater, lectures, arts, music
and museums available in Boston, faculty-directed
research projects and community service.
You’ll start out in your first year with a one-semester forum
called honors colloquium, an active and open dialogue
with equally engaged peers and faculty members from across
all disciplines in small, interactive class discussions.
Our Honors Program enriches your academic experience
with a focus on themes of leadership, ethics, social justice
and teamwork.

Opportunities in Science
The sciences have been an integral part of an Emmanuel
College education since its early years. This is a tradition
we continue to expand upon today. Our neighbors are
some of the most prestigious medical, academic and
research institutions in the world. This location offers you
unmatched opportunities in highly competitive fields
of science, technology and health care.
The Maureen Murphy wilkens science center
Welcome to academics in action. The Wilkens Science
Center is a world-class science center where a new
generation of students like you can achieve scientific
literacy and prepare for high-growth fields and graduate
study. This is a commitment to your future that reflects
and enlarges our mission, with state-of-the-art space
that enhances interactive teaching and learning.
And beyond science excellence, this building is also a
commitment to our shared future of green sustainability,
from its LEED-certified construction to its energy-efficient
operating systems and design elements.

science living-learning community
This exciting science-specific, integrated learning
environment for residential students is designed to intensify and
expand your educational experience beyond the classroom.
You’ll live in the same residence hall with other
students who are equally driven by their love of science.
And you’ll learn together, supported by computers
loaded with science software in the lounges, organized
tutoring and study sessions, special faculty presentations
and conversations, peer mentoring and more.
Merck research laboratories — Boston
Emmanuel is the only college in the country with a
private pharmaceutical research facility right on campus.
This is a partnership that gives you access and opportunity
to a world few undergraduates ever get to see.
Merck Internships offer exciting opportunities
in the fields of cancer treatment, Alzheimer’s disease
and obesity. The Merck scholars program offers
special Emmanuel scholarships based on outstanding
academic performance in the sciences. And the
emmanuel/Merck Joint science seminar series
brings together leaders in the scientific community,

We’re here to help you excel
Our goal is to position you for success at the college level
and beyond, for a lifetime of learning and participating in a
diverse and global society.
Beginning at Orientation, your Academic Advisor will help
you transition into college life. You’ll meet regularly to develop
short- and long-term academic plans, select courses, review
your academic progress and tap into additional resources.
In the Academic resource center (Arc) you’ll find the
programs, peers and professionals to help you hone your
learning skills, improve your writing abilities and turn peer
tutoring into a powerful resource.
The office of Internships and career Development has a
variety of resources to help you in all phases of your career
development, from initial assessments to skill-building workshops
and postings for both internships and, eventually, jobs.
Should further education be in your future, graduate school preparation will help ready you for the GRE, GMAT, MCAT
and LSAT exams, with everything from applications and
timelines to study guides and test prep.
The cardinal cushing library holds over 140,000 print
and electronic titles, as well as CDs, DVDs, videos, reference
materials, journal subscriptions, databases and special
collections. The library also houses the Academic computercenter and the language laboratory.

The Emmanuel Learning Experience
We are a community with a lifelong passion for
teaching and learning, rooted in the commitment to
rigorous intellectual inquiry and the pursuit of truth.
Our goal is to instill in you the knowledge, skills and
habits of a mind developed through the study of the
liberal arts and sciences. We believe that the concepts
and the vocabulary, as well as the creative and critical
thinking of the liberal arts and sciences are basic to
your intellectual, aesthetic and moral development.
In short, a full and meaningful life.
At Emmanuel, courses taught by teams of professors
bring more than one perspective to the same subject
matter. The sciences team combined with philosophy,
for example, provides opportunity for a spirited
discussion on the moral and ethical implications of
new cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs.
It’s all part of our founding mission to transform lives
and make a better world with a strong values-based
education, integrating an exploration of human values
and ethical issues with empirical facts and a traditional
body of knowledge.
“ A Catholic college is a place where the dialogue between faith and reason is taken seriously. Here students engage in discussions of the ethical issues of our time.”
Sister Janet Eisner, SND, President
12
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur
In 1919, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who believe
that education is the greatest work on earth, opened Emmanuel
College to provide an education to those who might otherwise
not have the opportunity to achieve one. Their mission was
clear: Making known God’s goodness … educating for life.
The rigorous intellect, the vibrant faith and the joyful spirit of
this powerful mission are embodied in Sister Janet Eisner, SND,
who first came to Emmanuel as a student. She returned as
a professor, served as the Chair of the English Department
and the Director of Admissions, and now serves as President.
Sister Janet loves the students of Emmanuel College.
But make no mistake, her expectations are high.
This is an education that will make a difference in
your life. In return, it is expected that you will make
a difference in the lives of others.
13
Carolyn A. Lynch Institute
In this institute, our personal commitment to provide
urban elementary and secondary school children with
a top-quality education in mathematics, science and
technology is met with a powerful combination of
resources and training for you, their future teacher.
In this innovative teaching laboratory, generously funded by
the Lynch Foundation, we help you become fluent in “smart
classroom” technologies, empower your dedication with
special skills that will help you transform the lives of kids
who sorely need your help, and award scholarships.
Colleges of the Fenway
Six colleges are better than one. Especially when your five
neighbors have the campuses and special areas of study of the
Massachusetts College of Art and Design, the Massachusetts
College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Simmons College,
Wentworth Institute of Technology and Wheelock College.
Together, we share library privileges, cross-register
for each other’s courses, play in our joint orchestra,
compete in intramural sports and more. This is
city life at its best, hanging out with the neighbors.
14
Research, Publishing& Presentations
In most colleges, working on major research projects
shoulder to shoulder with faculty is for graduate students,
who fight to be noticed in the sea of students eager for
the privilege of stepping into world-class research labs.
In most colleges, undergrads never see their work in print.
But Emmanuel is not most colleges. This is a personal
college committed to delivering a powerful punch.
Here, professors are always on the lookout for outstanding
poems that can be published in anthologies, and papers
that can be delivered at national conferences in science,
psychology or political science.
Faculty members have reputations and connections all
over the world, but they choose to teach at Emmanuel
because they are driven to be part of your transformation.
Just ask any of these students.
“We want students to leave saying, ‘That was awesome. What’s next? I’m ready.’”

Internships & Career Development
Intellectual rigor meets practical reality and theory meets
practice in valuable internships across all disciplines. Your
internship will be a pivotal component of your educational
experience and an essential opportunity in your journey
toward both a professional career and graduate school.
Here in Boston, Emmanuel College has partnerships across a
broad spectrum of arenas, from marketing to financial services,
from politics to communications, from law enforcement to
health care. From Fortune 500 to non-profit, an internship will
give you an on-the-spot view of how the world works. A world
you are eager to join. A world you may change someday.
A world that welcomes Emmanuel students like you.

Daniel D’Amato
Major: Management Internship: puMA
“ I learned from this laid-back but professional office environment what no
classroom could ever teach me. Although course work definitely prepared me for
the real world, my internship helped my mindset transition from that of a student
to a full-time professional. I gained confidence and produced quality work working
for the shoes I’ve worn all my life!”
Kana Ito
International student from Japan Major: Art history Internship: Museum of fine Arts, Boston
“ I helped build the MFA’s online learning tool, which transforms exhibitions
into online galleries that teachers and students can access at any time.
For each gallery I developed learning goals, background readings,
classroom activities and online resources. I discovered how digital
media can create a fun, modern way to learn and teach through art.”
Kara o’shea
Major: english/communications Internship: fairmont copley plaza hotel
“ At the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel I worked with the regional director of public
relations. I wrote press releases for events such as Boston’s Winter Restaurant Week
and worked with social media tools promoting the multiple Fairmont hotels. My
goal was to learn about PR within the hospitality industry. I definitely achieved it.”
christine haggerty
Major: global studies Internship: o’neill and Associates
“ My time at O’Neill and Associates offered me insight into the bigger picture
of working in government and public relations and helped me determine a
potential career. It was fascinating getting to work with some of the most
well-known companies in Boston. I am excited to see where I can go from here.”

Study Abroad
International study lets you pursue a language, a major, a
dream. We offer over 500 study abroad programs all over the
world, from Barcelona to Beijing, from a week at spring break
to a summer, a semester or a year.
They will expand your mind, invigorate your spirit and offer
a global context and perspective that will stay with you for
life. Tomorrow they may open the door to a job, and then
help you do that job better than you would have without the
perspective of a global context.
Our International Programs Office, partnering with the
Colleges of the Fenway’s Global Education Opportunities
Center, is where you start. There you can find the country
and program that’s right for you. Emmanuel students have
studied management in China, education in Australia, art in
Italy, political and economic development in South America
and much more. What will you do?
20
Campus Life
welcome to a place to call your own in Boston.
400 The Fenway is your new Boston address for the next
four years. Your new home base has a big green backyard
in the middle of Boston’s medical and business worlds.
If the entire city of Boston is your extended classroom,
the Jean Yawkey center is your extended living room.
A place to gather and relax. Your student center, your
dining hall, the heart of your new home. Floor-to-ceiling
windows frame the seasons as they change. From your
seat in an easy chair, your worlds of residential, student,
academic and spiritual life are all in view. And steps
away is a state-of-the-art gym and fitness center.
Your community is more than a historic chapel,
contemporary classrooms, labs and beyond them,
playing fields. Your community is full of the right
resources for personal success and expression.
22
First-Year Experience
Right from the beginning we help you build a strong academic
foundation and solid personal support for a successful college
career. Our programs are designed to give you the freedom
to explore your passions, the room to try new things and the
skills to succeed. Our people are eager to help you spread
your wings and soar.
Every first-year student takes a first-Year seminar in the
fall. These small working groups will introduce you to the
academic building blocks of a traditional liberal arts and
sciences education. You will hone your ability to read
mindfully, to analyze information, to construct arguments
and to communicate effectively. Your Academic Advisor
will help you settle in academically and chart your course
moving forward.
You will also find a professional resident Director living in
every hall, a student resident Assistant on every floor and
a commuter Assistant ready to assist you. They are dedicated
to supporting you both personally and academically.
Your first weeks on campus will be rich with opportunities to
connect with student leaders, embrace service opportunities,
join clubs and organizations, partner with mentors and explore
possible majors. From your first morning on campus to your last
evening before graduation, you will be part of a vital, exciting
community that will sharpen your mind, unleash your potential,
free your spirit and expand your horizons.

Your Network of Alumni
They came to Emmanuel as you will, eager
for the knowledge of the past and the skills
for the future, and perhaps a little nervous.
They left four years later curious, confident
and prepared for a lifetime of personal fulfillment
and professional achievement, treating patients in
hospitals and handling investments in financial firms.
Teaching kids in schools all across the country,
keeping you on the edge of your seat in TV dramas
and looking for cures in research labs.
The alumni of Emmanuel are not just those who
came before you, they are a lifelong network
of contacts and friends from coast to coast and
continent to continent.
They’re not looking for you to catch up with them,
they want to see you go beyond them.
“ When I interned with Genzyme I was eager to demonstrate my abilities to the world. I guess I did. Now I’m a Finance and Sales Operations Analyst there.”

“ My Emmanuel experience taught me to make sense of complexity, take personal
responsibility for continuous learning and focus on social responsibility.
Today the College continues this rich tradition of helping each student to bridge
the gap between academic exploration and career success.”
Anne Mcgrail, Class of 1987
writer and producer CSI: NY, CSI: Miami and Boomtown
“ When I first came to Emmanuel I felt as if I knew little about the outside world.
When I left the College, however, I had a much stronger sense of the world
around me and had the courage to go after what I wanted. Now I’m a writer
and producer on TV.”
serghino rené, Class of 2005
Alumni relations coordinator, Year up “ It is my job to build and maintain relationships with Year Up’s 1100+ alumni
while overseeing its Boston alumni association board. Serving as treasurer
of Emmanuel’s alumni association has helped sharpen my leadership skills,

Krystle north, Class of 2009

“ The opportunity to be fully immersed in your field of interest is so important as
a student, especially when you’re not sure what you want to do after graduation.
Interning at Children’s Hospital led me to where I am today, working with a great
department and learning new things every day.”
Aaron Belli, Class of 2011
research Assistant Division of Viral pathogenesis, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical center
“ After interning with the lab during my senior year, I was offered a full-time

Your Network of Alumni
What is the value of a Catholic liberal arts and sciences
education? The freedom to explore your mind and your
heart and learn what you really want to do with your life.
For many Emmanuel students, that means graduate school.
Abigail clark, Class of 2010
M.s. candidate, Zoology, university of new hampshire “ Emmanuel undoubtedly prepared me for the next stage in my life,
which is pursuing graduate studies. While studying at Emmanuel, my personal goal was to intern at the New England Aquarium. I’m grateful to have achieved it. My experience definitely encouraged me to seek more answers surrounding marine life.”
chris Borges, Class of 2010
ph.D. candidate, Immunology, harvard Medical school “ I had opportunities at Emmanuel that few undergraduates could imagine.
I was a part of the Neuro-Immunology Research Project all four years, and as a junior, I was chosen from a pool of mostly post-doctoral students and hospital residents to present research at the American Transplant Congress. Harvard Medical School will train me, but Emmanuel is where I realized I wanted to dedicate the rest of my life to immunology and bone marrow transplantation research.”
Kristen Breslin, Class of 2010
M.B.A./M.s. candidate, Accounting, northeastern university “ Emmanuel helped me to discover a career path. From my internship with
the accounting firm of Robert Goodman, P.C., I learned how an accounting firm works from people who were willing to help me grow. And I learned that when I graduate a small-sized office is the ideal environment for me, as it allows for more opportunity to learn and take on responsibility.”
Bethany wolfe, Class of 2011
M.s. candidate, Design and Digital Media, The university of edinburgh, scotland “ Technology has always intrigued me, particularly when applicable to art and
design. At Emmanuel, I studied communication and graphic design. My graphic design classes taught me a great deal, and whetted my appetite to learn more. My communication classes gave me the ability to think critically about what I was creating, not just as works of art or advertisements. What I learned at Emmanuel about design and thinking critically acts as the foundation for my graduate studies.”
