I believe that the SRC of 2010/2011 must be commended on their work thus far.In running for President, I wish to follow on the legacy and good work which they have done.

The rational behind my determination to serving as President is two-fold:1. Concerning Continuity 2. Relevant Experience

Having already served on the SRC as well as my many years of leadership experience, I believe Iam the most appropriate candidate to best serve the students. I will build on the foundations

which have already been laid down, and will ensure that every student gets the rights and privileges they deserve.

If elected to serve the students as President, I will ensure that the SRC priorities shift towardsservice delivery :

Attaining a bus shuttle service for campus;

Investigating the Residence Quality of Life, & food in the Dining Halls; More effective & efficient Oppidan services;

Re-structuring the DP System

My Manifesto:The SRC has been mandated by the Rhodes University Student body to undertakerepresentation in all spheres of student governance. This meaning any and all interaction with

both the SR council and the administration should have the students’ best interest at the coreof it all.

My commitment to the student body is to improve upon the relationships within thestructures. There are quite a number of committees and forums that exist constitutionally, some holding both advisory power and/or decision making power. Nurturing thoserelationships within the context of the Student Interest, I believe will certainly improve thecurrent state of affairs.

Make me your choice as President of the SR Council, because I understand how much youropinion matters. Because behind that opinion is a student that demands representation and

behind that representation should be one unified SRC.

Your interest is our mandate, that’s all that matters…

ManifestoAll great endeavors start with simple plans or what will seem at the time as promisesbut will later materialize into the very essence of Rhodes University. Rhodes University

does not exist in isolation and resides at the heart of the Grahamstown economy, whichmeans that it should serve the community in a vast manner. Not only does the feeconcern marginalize on the Grahamstown community but Rhodes remains an unsafehaven for those that face financial constraints within the institution. We need to pave away for a plan that will deal with a change in fee structure, not taking away from theprestigious academic status Rhodes upholds. In so doing to create awareness to thestudents about the vast bursary opportunities within Rhodes that serve to remedyfinancial constraints. I plan to create and facilitate open forums of dialogue betweenAdministration and the students, through the SRC. This can be achieved by creating anonline service where grievances can be articulated by the students and for the SRC toreport back on pressing issues. It is the dream afraid of waking that never learns to live,

allow me at least try. It is not enough to be part of a system; we need to change thesystem.

Manifesto

I could talk about my leadership skills, list achievements and capabilities, talk about howmy previous committee positions have equipped me, and how enthused or able I am tohold this office. While I firmly believe there are many valuable qualities I possess, my

petition, rather, is that you as the Rhodes University student body allow me to work withyou to create a campus where accessibility and association are key principles of the

Rhodes SRC.

The very mandate and vision of the SRC speaks of it being a body founded by students for students. Moreover, among many objectives, it seeks to inform, listen, be

compassionate to and benefit the student body as a whole. My aspiration is that values

such as these may be upheld and emphasized. Moreover, I truly believe the problem is notwith the system per se but, perhaps, with the manner in which it is sometimes executed.

In my term of office, I would seek to find solutions to problems voiced by you - in everysphere. Concerns about fees; academics, student rights, international students’ affairs, the

dire need to address community engagement and more. I might add however, that Ibelieve if things are not broken, they should not be fixed and that it is not necessarily

always about big change but, rather, a gradual and thorough process of transformation.

ManifestoThis is why YOU should vote for me for SRC President!!!

As a senior student of the university and with various committee and academic experience as well asleadership experience I know that I am very capable of fulfilling the duties and functions of the SRCPresident as outlined by the Student Constitution. Having being elected on to the SR Council for2010/2011 I have gained a lot of experience in working on the SRC and serving the students. The SRC of 2010/2011 worked very hard during their term and to keep the ball rolling, continuity is the way.

My aim is to let the SRC sit in less committee meetings and rather engage with the student body. I believein an active and visible SRC. I believe in access and transparency. And therefore I want the students tohave a say in how THEIR funds are being utilized by the SRC. Students must have full access toFinancial Statements. I will also strive to get a transport service running for campus and off campusstudents during the day. My goal will be to meet student needs. I will not lie to you about decreasing fees. This is something that we might fight and look into. And maybe look at increasing the student intake of the university to fight against fees. We might not be able to change the system over night, but I will atleast strive to influence the system towards satisfying student needs.

IT IS TIME FOR TRANSFORMASTION AND EQUALITY.Democracy: You get appointed by the students. You serve the students!!!

I like being the person who lays down the plan towards an objective, who makesthe key and critical decisions that change the system on the ground, who controlsthe allocation of funds from a given budget to specific projects efficiently whichwill benefit whoever I am representing. Management is my major subject and in ayear or so I will be in the job market practicing being a manager.Being the SRC Treasurer will provide me with the practical side of being theplanner, the decision-maker and the controller thus manager. I’m currently atreasurer in my residence so I am practising this profession just at a smaller scalethan the one I will be at.I’m aware of the discipline and technical financial knowledge required when

A born fighter and activist. Being raised as a black, Muslim woman in a transgressing yet, transforming South Africa has enabled my ability to fight for what I believe in, using the correct or effective democratic methods.

The name ‘Zakiyyah’ means purity and I intend on purifying the mindsets of students, in order to prevent predicaments of prejudice and profusion. I intend to promote productivity inactivism, and in so doing, will enable the birth of a new prodigy. Prior to any obligations, Iintend to, not only ‘voice’, but ‘shout’, ‘act’ and ‘sing’ the words of transformation in order tochange the treatment between all students. Raising awareness will be accomplished by technological advancements, such as, creating a twitter account whereby students have theopportunity to discuss and debate potential, transformational programs, in a public forum.

I am a feminist, an Africanist and an Activist, with these words, joining the masses, in order toobtain the right kinds of change, will be a task I find pleasure in. Every student has different

upbringings and passions, and fusing those together, in order to find a formula of freedom, will only benefit the general environment of this University. I am, but the voice that, will choreo ra h, direct and lead towards ros erit and divinit .

I am running for the position of Community Engagement Councillor because Ibelieve that each and every one of us has an impact directly or indirectly onsomeone else’s life in a positive or negative way. I want to get people involved in

community engagement so that they may have an impact in a positive way onsomeone else’s lives. I want to help the disadvantaged people of Grahamstown, tohelp better their lives and build a strong community engagement spirit in theUniversity. So that we can help the people of Grahamstown to overcome theproblems that they are currently faced with e.g. poverty, illiteracy etc.

Manifesto

To build a relationship with the people of Grahamstown, so that they no longer seeus as the people from the other side of the rail road line but as the same as them. And this will only be possible if we build up and update on the current projectsthat we have so that we can see what is working and what is not and only then willour impact be larger and felt, and “ Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there arefootsteps on the moon”. Your manifesto

Our generation is the Earth generation. We are the ones who will have to seek solutions to the

environmental problems that are very real all around us.I would like to see the students of Rhodes University campus united behind this goal. As SRCEnvironmental Councilor, I will strive to introduce green thinking into campus life throughprojects such as the Campus Greening Initiative proposed by SEACC SF that will work onrecycling systems, electricity usage, water quality and availability, food sourcing and otherenvironmental issues on campus. In order to better manage this, I will ensure that every residence has an environmentalrepresentative, so as empower students from the bottom up. These students will beencouraged to both contribute to the Campus Greening Initiative and also start their ownprojects within their residences.I will also work closely with the environmental societies of Rhodes, to which I have direct

access due to my own involvement. This will be particularly valuable as I would like toimplement the idea of an overarching environmental society next year. By joining this onesociety students would have access to the projects of each of the existing environmentalsocieties, which would still exist as sub-committees. I hope that this structure will create bettercooperation in the Rhodes environmental sector, as well as ensuring that individual groupshave a wider su ort base.

As environmental councillor I plan to find alternative ways to eliminatewastage of food in the dining halls. Improving the current environmentalprojects that are currently in place in the university, to ensure that they

have a much larger scale impact as they look good on paper but they arenot reaching their expected targets in reality so I plan to “practise whatwe preach.”

Manifesto

As environmental councillor I plan to change the mind-set that peoplehave that, to be an environmentalist and to care for the environment, onemust be a tree hugger and vegetarian. This is false any one can be anenvironmental conservationist in their own way. And by doing this we willbe able to address environmental concerns in and around campus.

ManifestoWhile elected councilors make the ultimate decisions, I believe that students should beconsulted as much as possible on matters at hand. The Student Representative Council

is here to serve the students of Rhodes University after all.The University has access to its own media, for example notice boards, rates and feebilling, as well as the Rhodes website. I would like to incorporate New Media platformssuch as Twitter, Facebook, on-line publications, Linked-In and improve the studentnews email system for spreading information about fees, new plans, Universitypriorities, events, student benefits, community awareness and University policychanges. Student newspapers as well as RMR should also be used to inform people, andin some cases like phone-in or write-in programmes, to consult people. My media team will be here to give advice, help people with problems, assess needs andwork with student societies to build partnerships with the local community and theUniversity. Having better news awareness will help us to do consultations, research,

spread information and monitor implementation. Through new technology anddialogical conversation, I believe we can develop a stronger Rhodes and South Africa.

I place my intellectual capacity at a disposal of the Media council office due to the fact that Iam aware of the challenges that exist in the media industry. As we all are aware of the factthat Rhodes University is one of the leading institutions when it comes to journalism in thewhole of Africa, therefore I will make sure that the Journalism students get a conduciveatmosphere that will not limit their journalistic aptitude. I will make sure that the struggle todisperse the so called Media Tribunal and the Protection of Information’s bill will beestablished. The reason behind this is the fact that the media is suppose to be a precursor forthe community, the eyes and eyes of ordinary citizens which will tell the untold storieswithout fear or favour or prejudice in a objective balanced comportment. My vision is to usemy role in media to communicate to the general student body the most relevant and usefulinformation regarding important processes and crucial decisions that are made by the SRC.

One of the crucial stances that I will make in this office is to make sure that the are clear andeffective means of communication between the general students and the SRC.

Manifesto:Truth. Transparency. Honesty.Accountability:

Four pillars that form the basis of my campaign. Each of which contributes significantly to successful student governance. The colour of my campaign is red, symbolizing my passion and energy for media; in getting the best results. My term of office will focus on informing students about the function of the SRC and showing them that they arethe SRC’s main priority. I am equipped for office by my extensive experience in marketing and media, gained hereat Rhodes and elsewhere, as well as my keen interest in student issues.I plan to do this by:

Creating a vlog, via which I can communicate with the students – presenting a summary of key issuesdiscussed at Student Forum.

Introducing an interactive website exclusively for Rhodents, to replace the Purple Press in keeping thestudents informed.

Providing the students with an online student forum for student debate and discussion on this website.

Liaising with student media: The Oppidan Press, Activate & Rhodes Music Radio, by their inclusion in theMedia Councillor’s Sub-Committee, keeping the students informed.

My experience in student media has prepared me to serve you, the student, to the best of my abilities.

As a student in digs, I feel strongly about the interests of Oppidans and their well-being.Oppidans need to be heard and feel like an important part of the university. I believestudents need a representative who will be their voice, facilitate the improvement of service delivery and act as an efficient liaison between them and the SRC. At the end of the day we all need to be satisfied knowing that our fees are being used for things that willbe beneficial for us all. I therefore avail myself for this portfolio believing that I can makea difference working hand in hand with the SRC and the student body.

I can do my best to attend to issues that need to be addressed and ensure that Oppidans’voices’ are heard and that they make efficient use of the services available to them andalso know their rights and duties. I also think that improving services offered to studentsin digs is an ongoing process, as much as students in Residences are a community, so arewe and working together as a unit can help achieve our main goals.

Manifesto

As Projects Manager I would have the responsibility and privilege of serving the RhodesCommunity i.e. the student body and local community, by organizing events and functions

on behalf of the SRC for the students of Rhodes University.

My personal vision for the Project Management Portfolio within the SRC is to createprofessional and social linkages for students within the university as well as the broaderSouth African community in a professional, organized and an environmentally consciousfashion using best practices of project management to the SRC’s and Rhodes University’sadvantage and benefit.

In order to achieve this I would promote a culture of inclusivity where we would try toincorporate the collective needs of the community, build on the predecessor’s successesand implement new ideas and work on new implementable projects.

The best practices model would include elements of good planning and operationaltechniques, broad based communication that will effectively market the events, ethicalprofit/income sharing models where society at large benefits, win-win situations for all andguess what,… having fun in the process!

It is an extreme privilege to study at this great university but with this privilege comesresponsibility. The responsibility to connect and relate both on campus as well as in theworld at large.

In order to connect, students will be motivated to get involved and in so doing have apowerful voice in ensuring that the profits generated from these functions are channeledfor the greater good of SA. My plan of action is to use the funds acquired for communityengagement and outreach programmes. Some of the events envisaged would include, greatfield bashes, fund raising events for community projects, sponsorship drive for key events, etc.

Let’s work smartly and productively together to have this privileged educational

opportunity benefit all in our society not only an elite few while having immense funwhile we are at it.

MANIFESTO

STOP THEFT!!

The heart of my campaign rests on the ever recurring trend of various societies whichreceive student membership fees and thereafter fail to fulfill the obligations to theirmembers, which is equated to theft.

The plight that students face is of gross exploitation where they pay significant amountsof money for membership to various societies, only to find that the societies areincompetent and non functional.

My aim as the SRC Societies Councillor for 2011/2012 would be to provide structuresand frameworks in which societies are held accountable to their members.
