Dear Student-Athlete,

Welcome to the St. Joseph‟s College athletic community! I am delighted that you have to chosen to join us at

the Brooklyn campus as both a student and an athlete. As a result, you will experience opportunities often

advantage of everything that the College has to offer. Your success as a well-rounded and involved student will

serve you and St. Joseph‟s well.

As you know, St. Joseph‟s has established a tradition of excellence not only academically, but also recently within

the realm of athletics on the Brooklyn campus. This reputation was built by hard work, sportsmanlike conduct

and positive attitudes both in the classroom and during all athletic events. Now that you are a member of our

growing athletic department, I am confident you will continue to advance our tradition with respect, dignity and

integrity as you strive to fulfill your academic and athletic obligations.

We at St. Joseph‟s want to help you succeed with your academic and athletic goals. Please remember to always

ask for assistance when you need it. There are many offices at St. Joseph‟s specifically here to help students. If

there is anything that I can assist you with during the course of your time here, please don‟t hesitate to stop by

my office in the Student Life suite in Tuohy Hall.

Again, welcome to the Bears and Lady Bears family! Good luck and best wishes for success both on and off the

court in the coming year!!!

LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

WELCOME TO THE BEARS & LADY BEARS FAMILY !!!

Dear Student-Athlete,

On behalf of the entire athletic department, I would like to welcome you to the exciting world of intercollegiate

athletics here at St. Joseph‟s College. SJC enjoys a rich tradition of athletic and academic success, and we are

extremely pleased to have you join our growing “sports family”. This is truly a landmark era in the history of

athletics here on the Brooklyn campus as we begin our first year as a full member of NCAA Division III. Our

athletic department is committed to providing the very best athletic experiences and opportunities while

competing at the NCAA Division III level. We encourage you to work hard and give your best efforts on the

court, field, pool, or track and most importantly, in the classroom.

St. Joseph‟s College - Brooklyn Campus holds distinct advantages and presents unique opportunities for the

talented student-athlete. The Athletic Department recognizes that education is the top priority and works

closely with the academic faculty to maintain this focus. The primary objective is to develop the student-

athlete‟s talents and abilities not only in the arena of competition, but in the classroom as well. In this way, we

strive to produce a well-rounded young adult who is ready to accept and handle the challenges and

responsibilities that exist in whatever path they choose. By constantly striving to provide the best experiences

and opportunities for the St. Joseph‟s College student-athlete, this multi-faceted approach has led to a

tremendous amount of success in all of the sports offerings on the varsity and club level for both the Bears and

Lady Bears.

This Student-Athlete Handbook has been prepared as a guide for your participation in intercollegiate athletics at

SJC. Whether you are a new or returning student, the handbook provides valuable information about the

Athletic Department and the College. I encourage you to become familiar with its contents and pay particular

attention to the student-athlete policies and guidelines. Feel free to contact your coach or one of the

administrators if you have questions the handbook does not answer. I also encourage you to familiarize yourself

with the St. Joseph‟s College Student Handbook. This can be found at http://bears.sjcny.edu/Athlete-Forms.

This year, in addition to our current roster of 12 extremely successful varsity sports and 5 club sports, plans are

in the works to continue to expand the number of sports offerings in 2011 and beyond. As you can see, there‟s

something for everyone here at SJC. We encourage you to be a part of these terrific new activities !

I look forward to another exciting, successful and hopefully ground-breaking year of athletic competition and

wish you all the best as part of the Bears and Lady Bears family !

Sincerely,

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION

St. Joseph‟s College - Brooklyn Campus holds distinct

advantages and presents unique opportunities for the

talented student-athlete. The Athletic Department

recognizes that education is the top priority and

works closely with the academic faculty to maintain

this focus.

The primary objective is to develop the student-

athlete‟s talents and abilities not only in the arena of

competition, but in the classroom as well. In this way,

we strive to produce a well-rounded young adult

who is ready to accept and handle the challenges and

responsibilities that exist in whatever path they

choose.

By constantly striving to provide the best experiences

and opportunities for the St. Joseph‟s College

student-athlete, this multi-faceted approach has led to

a tremendous amount of success in all of the sports

offerings on the varsity and club level for both the

Lady Bears and Bears.

St. Joseph‟s College is committed to providing all

student-athletes an equal opportunity to learn and be

successful in an environment that promotes academic

excellence and athletic success. The Athletic

Department promotes diversity by welcoming men

and women of different ages, races, religious beliefs

and cultural backgrounds to participate in all

activities.

St. Joseph‟s is committed to ensuring that our

programs are an enduring source of pride to our

student-athletes, staff, alumni and community while

working in concert with other College Departments

to maximize student-life, student recruitment and

and maintain an environment in which a student-

athlete's athletics activities are conducted as an

integral part of the student-athlete's educational

POLICIES

General Policy

All athletes and team managers are expected to abide

by the St. Joseph‟s College Student Code of Conduct

and to represent the College in a mature and

responsible fashion during all athletic activities and

events, including traveling to and from all games and

practices. Athletes and managers are expected to

respect the coaching and administrative staff.

Adherence to the St. Joseph‟s Code of Conduct

includes, but is not limited to the policies listed

below.

Student-Athlete Eligibility

All student-athletes representing St. Joseph's College

club and intercollegiate teams, are required to meet

the same academic standards as non-athletes.

For a student-athlete to be eligible for any College

sponsored athletic competition, s/he must conform

to the following specific requirements:

1. A student-athlete must be registered as a full-time

student carrying a minimum of 12 credits per

semester, which are applicable towards a degree. A

student athlete shall become ineligible at the precise

time he or she drops below the 12-credit minimum

during any semester.*

2. A student-athlete must make normal progress

toward a degree and must maintain a cumulative GPA

of 2.0 and a GPA of 2.0 for the semester just

completed. A student-athlete failing below 2.0 shall

be declared ineligible on the last day of the final exam

period, or when the registrar declares grades to be

final. Student-athletes may regain eligibility by

attending the winter intersession, or summer

session.** A student-athlete who fails to maintain the

academic standards outlined, may appeal for a

probationary semester (first semester freshman are

not eligible for a probationary semester). All appeals

will be reviewed by the Athletic Eligibility Review

Committee.

* NCAA Senior Exception ** Intersession or summer session grades will be combined with

the most recently completed semester for the purpose of

determining eligibility.

Additional N.C.A.A. requirements are listed in the Official

N.C.A.A. Handbook.

Student-Athlete Academic Success Policy

St. Joseph‟s College is committed to the academic

success of all its students. The following policy has

been developed to insure the academic success of the

student-athletes:

C- (Progress) Reports

All C- (Progress) Reports for Student-Athletes will be

reviewed by the Committee on Academic and Extra-

Curricular Review. The Committee will meet and

make recommendations for each student on how to

proceed in order to insure their academic success.

Unexcused or excessive absences could result in

suspension from participation in any athletic sports at

any time during the semester or possibly longer if

significant improvement or satisfactory grades are not

achieved.

Any Student-Athlete who receives two or more C-

(Progress) Reports for any reason will be mandated

to report to the Director of Counseling and

Career Development to devise a specific plan for

Academic Success. The Student-Athlete will report

to the Director on a weekly basis for the remainder

of the semester. The individual‟s plan for Academic

Success will include a prescribed number of visits to

the Academic Center.

Student-Athletes MAY NOT drop a course to

avoid or negate a C- (Progress) Report.

Student-Athletes are advised and encouraged to be

pro-active in regard to their academic status. We

want you to be aware that there are numerous

resources within St. Joseph‟s College at your disposal

if you are having difficulty in a course(s). Please visit

the Office of Counseling and Career

Development or the Academic Center

immediately if you feel you need assistance. In

addition, you are always encouraged to speak to your

Professors regularly in regard to your academic

status. We wish every Student-Athlete the best of

luck and continued success in every aspect of your St.

Joseph‟s College career.

Missed Class Time

Under no circumstances are student-athletes allowed

to miss class for practice. It is the student-athletes‟

responsibility to give advance notice to your

professor and leave as late as possible for any given

trip or competition to avoid missing any class time.

Alcohol

Regardless of age, no athlete or manager is allowed

to have in their possession or consume alcoholic

beverages during any St. Joseph’s College Athletics

activity. These activities include practice,

competition, team travel and overnight trips.

Alcohol consumption by individuals under the age of

21 is illegal. Student-athletes and managers may not

be present in bars or any other location where

individuals under the age of 21 are consuming alcohol.

Student-athletes who fail to abide by these policies

will be subject to penalties from the Athletic

Department and further disciplinary action from the

College, if deemed necessary.

The Athletic Department strongly encourages all

student-athletes to refrain from consumption of

alcoholic beverages while involved in their traditional

season of athletic competition. We ask for this

commitment with the understanding that the positive

effects of remaining alcohol-free not only improve

athletic performance but also promote a healthy

lifestyle for the student-athlete.

Drug Use

The Athletic Department prohibits the use of any

banned substance, either recreational or performance

enhancing, by student-athletes, staff and volunteers

associated with the athletic program.

Student-athletes and managers may not be present in

any location where others are using banned

substances regardless if the student-athlete is

participating or not.

Each student-athlete will be required to sign and

acknowledge that he or she understands the NCAA

substance abuse policy. If the student-athlete refuses

to sign this statement, he or she will be declared

ineligible for competition.

NCAA Substance Abuse Policy

The NCAA condemns the use of non-therapeutic

drugs of any kind by any of its member institutions or

affiliated organizations. In Division III, the NCAA

reserves the right to drug test student-athletes

competing in NCAA post-season championships. Any

athlete who tests positive is subject to all NCAA

sanctions. Specific drugs that are banned include (but

not limited to):

Cocaine

Heroin

Marijuana

Steroids

Non-authorized prescription drugs

The NCAA has an extensive list of banned

substances. The list includes illegal drugs as well as a

number of common over-the-counter drugs. The

banned list is available from the Certified Athletic

Trainer, Oscar J.W. Melendez, or may be accessed on

the NCAA Website at www.ncaa.org.

Tobacco Use

In accordance with NCAA Bylaws, the use of

tobacco, including smokeless tobacco, by student-

athletes, or team or game personnel (coaches,

athletic trainers, managers, and game officials), is

prohibited in all sports during practice and

competition. A student-athlete who uses tobacco

products during a practice or competition shall be

disqualified for the remainder of that practice or

competition.

In addition to the NCAA bylaw, athletes and

managers are not permitted to use tobacco while

traveling with the team to and from any game or

practice or while participating in a specific team-

related activity.

For the purposes of this policy, tobacco is defined to

include any lighted or unlighted cigarette, cigar, pipe,

and any other smoking product, and spit tobacco,

also known as smokeless, dip chew, and snuff, in any

form. Tobacco use includes smoking, chewing,

dipping, and any other use of tobacco products.

Gambling

All student-athletes and staff members of the Athletic

Department are bound by NCAA Bylaw 10.3

regarding gambling activities.

NCAA Bylaw 10.3 states:

Staff members of a member conference, staff

members of the athletic department of a member

institution, and student-athletes shall not

knowingly:

1. Provide information to individuals involved in

organized gambling activities concerning

intercollegiate athletic competitions.

2. Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate teams

3. Accept a bet on any team representing the

institution.

4. Solicit or accept a bet on any intercollegiate

competition for any item (e.g. cash, shirt, dinner)

that has tangible value.

5. Participate in any gambling activity that involves

intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics

through a bookmaker, parlay card, or any other

method employed by organized gambling.

If you find you are in violation of this policy, you must

report it to the Athletic Department immediately.

Department and a penalty determined based on the

severity of the infraction.

Hazing & Initiations

The Athletic Department strictly prohibits acts of

hazing. This position is supported by the St. Joseph‟s

College Student Code of Conduct and the New York

State Penal Code. These acts are defined as any

behavior that is physically, emotionally or

psychologically abusive to an individual or selected

group of individuals for the purpose of gaining

entrance or acceptance into an established group.

No student-athlete or manager shall act in a manner

or create a situation which intentionally or recklessly

endangers the mental or physical health of another,

or involves the forced consumption of liquor or

drugs for the purpose of initiation into or affiliation

with any organization.

Student-athletes involved in hazing activities will be

subject to severe penalties from the College and

Athletic Department. These penalties range from

college probation and suspension from athletic

contests to expulsion from the team and/or the

college. In addition, individuals may be subject to any

applicable penalties under the New York State

criminal and civil law.

Social Networking & Personal Websites

Internet sites such as (but not limited to) Facebook,

MySpace and Twitter provide individuals with an

opportunity to connect with friends and interact with

a wide universe of people. As a student-athlete, you

need to be aware of the dangers of using these

websites that allow you to post profiles, photographs,

and other personal information. You should use

good judgment and caution if you choose to use

these websites. It is critical that you understand what

is posted on these websites is public information.

College, civil, and legal authorities access these

websites and may use information obtained to initiate

disciplinary actions. Potential employers are also

searching these websites to gain insight into

prospective employees.

While the Athletic Department does not prohibit

student-athlete involvement on internet based social

networking sites, you have the responsibility to

present yourself in a way that is positive to St.

Joseph‟s College and your personal character. Please

use discretion when posting personal information,

comments and photos on these websites to ensure

that they present you in a way you wish to be

portrayed.

Keep in mind that you are responsible for pictures

that you pose in and are responsible for

inappropriate pictures that appear on these sites,

even if they don‟t appear on your own personal page.

If requested, student-athletes must accept requests

from Athletic Department Staff to be added as

“friends.” Should any material posted to these sites

be deemed inappropriate by the Athletic

Department, student-athletes may be subject to

disciplinary action.

Travel

Travel to local contests and regional/out of state

competitions are a significant part of the student-

athlete experience. The Athletic Department strives

to provide many opportunities for all teams by

providing adequate funding, comfortable buses, and

lodging while avoiding significant missed class time.

All student-athletes are expected to travel with their

team to and from all athletic contests. Any

exceptions to this policy require a waiver signed by

the parent and approved by the athletic director and

the team‟s head coach.

Student-athletes are expected to dress appropriately

on team trips and proper behavior and conduct is

expected at all times.

Overnight trips

All student-athletes‟ hotel rooms and travel bags are

subject to inspection at any time by a member of the

coaching staff if they feel it is warranted. Hotel room

damage will not be tolerated and offending parties

will be responsible for the cost of damages and face

further disciplinary action.

The consumption or possession of alcohol or banned

substances during any road trip is prohibited. Please

see the related policies earlier in this handbook for

further detail.

Sportsmanship

All St. Joseph‟s College student-athletes are expected

to represent their team, the Athletic Department,

and College in a manner that reflects positively on St.

Joseph's College and their student-athletes. One

must conduct him or herself in a respectful manner

during competition at all times. The opponent and

officials should always be treated with the utmost of

respect. Your behavior as a student-athlete reflects

directly on yourself, your team, the Athletic

Department, and the College.

St. Joseph‟s College students and spectators are

expected to abide by the following guidelines when

attending SJC athletic events (both home and away).

In addition, student-athletes are urged to remind

their families, friends, and others who attend SJC

athletic events of the following rules and regulations:

1. Cheer for your team in a positive manner and

not against your opponents. 2. Do not use abusive remarks, obscene gestures,

or profane language towards officials,

participants or spectators.

3. All signs and banners should be of a positive

nature.

4. Spectators (including parents) are not

allowed in the playing area at any time

during a scheduled contest.

5. Display good sportsmanship at all times.

Mission Statement

The primary goal of the sports medicine staff at St. Joseph‟s College is to provide the highest quality protection

of the health and welfare of our student-athlete population. This is accomplished first through the recognition,

evaluation, first aid, emergency care, management and rehabilitation of injuries. In addition, the sports medicine

staff strives to ensure that our student-athletes will be provided with the proper direction and counseling in all

areas of physical and mental well being.

Athletic Training Room Hours

The athletic training room will be open Monday - Friday,

from 11:00- 6:00 p.m. The training room is located in

Burns Hall, Lower Level 1, beneath the Red Room (take

Stair D).

If any student-athlete has an academic schedule conflict

with these hours, s/he can make arrangements to meet at

alternate times with the Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

The training room hours may vary slightly to accommodate

game and practice schedules.

Athletic Training Room Rules and Procedures

You must sign in prior to receiving treatment.

Student-athletes must dress appropriately in training room (T-shirt and shorts) to allow access to

receive treatment on the injured area.

All treatments are to be prescribed and monitored by a Certified Athletic Trainer.

Student-Athletes requiring any treatment for injuries should make a concerted effort to be in the

training room one hour prior to practice and two hours prior to a contest.

Student-athletes are not permitted to use phones for personal use. The use of staff desks and

computers in the training room is prohibited at all times.

Food and drinks other than water are not permitted in training room.

Loitering is prohibited in the training room. Those not receiving treatment will be asked to leave.

Do not use or touch any of the therapeutic equipment unless instructed to do so by an ATC.

Any student-athlete told to come in to receive treatment, and fail to show up, may result in not being

cleared to participate in practice or contest. Their coach will be notified.

Fall 2011 Edition

13

Pre-Participation Physical Exam

All student-athletes are required to complete a pre-participation physical exam This initial evaluation includes a

comprehensive health history, sickle cell trait screen, immunization history as defined by current Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and a relevant physical exam, with strong emphasis on the

cardiovascular, neurologic and musculoskeletal evaluation. The exam must take place within six months before

the first physical activity, tryout, or practice. Please be advised that the student-athlete will not be allowed to

participate in any team-related tryout, practice or competition without submitting their completed medical

forms along with primary insurance information to a Certified Athletic Trainer. These medical forms are

available on-line and can be completed by the student-athlete‟s primary care physician.

Sickle Cell Trait Screening

All St. Joseph’s College student-athletes are required to provide documentation verifying his/her

Sickle Cell Trait status. As of June 2009, the NCAA stated that “athletics departments confirm Sickle Cell

Trait status in all student-athletes, if it is not already known, during their required medical examinations.”

Documentation can be in the form of lab results and/or a note from their primary care physician (PCP) attesting

to the results of a Hemoglobin Solubility test or Hemoglobin Electrophoresis test on his/her letterhead, dated

with an original signature. If the student-athlete declines Sickle Cell Trait Testing, s/he shall sign a written

release. Sickle Cell Trait will not exclude an athlete from participation in intercollegiate athletics at St. Joseph‟s

College.

Concussion Baseline Assessment

An estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million concussions occur from participation in sports- and recreation-related activities

every year. As of April 2010, the NCAA requires St. Joseph's College to have a Concussion Management Plan.

This plan outlines the guidelines for a concussion baseline assessment. The baseline assessment will be recorded

for each student-athlete before the first practice in the sports of baseball, basketball, soccer, softball & wrestling.

A Certified Athletic Trainer will perform this assessment after the pre-participation exam is completed and the

student-athlete is medically cleared. The baseline assessment consists of a symptoms checklist, standardized

cognitive and balance assessment (SCAT II & BESS) supplemented with a computerized neuropsychological test

(ImPACT).

Reporting Injuries

Any injury that is suffered during participation in varsity

athletics at St. Joseph‟s College should be reported to

the athletic training staff immediately. The staff will then

assess the condition and make appropriate referrals

when necessary. An injury that is not reported in a

timely fashion may not be eligible for coverage by the

Athletic Department‟s secondary insurance.

Any student-athlete that suffers an injury and needs to

see a medical doctor will be sent to our team physician

and must be cleared by our team physician or certified

athletic trainer to return back to the field of play.

Reporting Medications & Dietary Supplements
