More San Francisco public school students are graduating and going to college.

We found collaborative solutions.Poverty, being the first person in a family to go to college, and drastic cuts to school budgets make it harder for students to start and finish college. But we can get students over these barriers when we work together.

We analyzed student data and devised a plan.At one San Francisco school 83% of seniors had been accepted to a college and yet come fall only 60% had enrolled. We partnered with teachers and principals to devise a plan to overcome the challenges to achievement.

We didn’t just help build the plan—we found resources to implement the plan. Read more on page 3&4.For example, we:• developed a new curriculum that focuses on helping students become college

eligible and prepared.• recruited 50 volunteers who tutored and mentored students weekly, and

interpreted for non-English speaking parents.• orchestrated a group of 35 other non-profits to align their services with the

college success goals, reduce duplication and increase the number of stu-dents benefitting from their services.

• introduced an online platform that allows students to plan their path to col-lege and track their progress. The platform also gives counselors and non-profit staff access to student’s data.

It’s working! We’ve seen double digit increases in students graduating. Read more on page 7.An independent evaluation showed a 20% increase in the number of African American students that graduated and were enrolled in college by the following fall.

Just as it takes a village to raise a child—many people contribute to a child’s education

“The ARUP volunteers explain how what we do in class directly relates to what they do on the job. It makes it more real for the students.” -Holger Michaelis, teacher, Burton High School

We introduced a new technology solution so students can map out their path to college and track their progress

“I couldn’t do all the amazing projects with the students without Mr. Dan.”- Linda Camarena, Art Teacher

More than 600 community members volunteered weekly with teachers and students

Page 4: 2011-12 - San Francisco Education Fund

Through the Thank a Teacher campaign community members donated more than $20,000 to teachers for supplies.

Ten teachers of the year were also honored during a SF Giants home plate ceremony

13,000 students strengthened their schools through peer-to-peer mentoring, conflict mediation and student lead workshops

Every SFUSD senior attended a college orientation day.

We prioritize allocation of our services to:a) high-need communities in San Francisco and b) schools where we believe our programmatic work will be leveraged by the school to positively impact the school community.

Need: Our definition of a high-need community is based on a number of economic and social indicators including: median family income, rate of poverty, participation in the state’s welfare program, CalWORKS, involvement in the juvenile justice system and high school graduation rates.

School Capacity: Research on school partnerships validates the lesson that over forty years of partnering in schools has taught the Education Fund: our success at any school is dependent upon the ability of the school community to collaboratively shape our engagement with them to respond to the needs of student and teachers. We undertook an internal assessment of each of our partner schools to determine (1) the strength our partnership with each school (2) the quality of our work at each school and (3) the anticipated needs of the school over the next school year.

Priority School Approach

Page 6: 2011-12 - San Francisco Education Fund

Bringing Together the CommunityWe do our deepest work in three schools; we leverage all our direct service programs and we work to align all the organizations and people that care about public schools to work together so that we achieve stronger and faster results.

Thurgood Marshall High School Supporting school staff: Education Fund staff, the college counselor and the Gear Up coordinator created a college counseling guide to ensure that school staff understand how to support students through the college application process and enrollment process.

Mission High School Serving more students: analysis of after school participation data helped us identify that groups of students were not accessing the academic support and rec-reational activities. That information was a catalyst for targeted outreach to African American and Latino students, and school staff created new programs to meet the needs of those students.

6

Phillip & Sala Burton High School Helping schools realize their vision: the Education Fund secured new partnerships and resources for the Career Academy. These partnerships provide students a link between what they are learning in school and a profession. They also provide hands on experiences with industry professionals.

Exciting Progress & ImpactPoverty, being the first person in the family to go to college and drastic cuts to school budgets make it hard for students to start and finish college. We have seen, however, that we can get students over those barriers.

Target population progressAt Mission High School, we’ve seen a 20% increase in the number of African American students that graduate and were enrolled in college by the following fall.

At Burton High School, overall the number of students enrolling in college has increased by 10% and African American students have achieved even better with a 14% increase.

At Thurgood Marshall High school 61% of seniors reported they were accepted to a four year college.

Much of our data from an independent evaluator is not yet public. We can report that there is still a long way to go to ensure that all our students are graduating high school and college but when we work together great progress is made.
