For just the fourth time in the 40 years of Penn State swimming and diving, it welcomed a new head coach . John Hargis took over the program as the first new coach in 10 years and led both the men’s and women’s squads to solid sea-sons in 2008-09 and enters his fourth season in 2011-12 . This past summer, Hargis served as an assistant on the U .S . Swimming squad for the 2011 University Games in China . Hargis accompanied Nittany Lion women’s backstroke-specialist Amy Modglin to the competition . Modglin was the second PSU student-athlete to compete under Hargis’s tenure as former NCAA Champion Patrick Schirk earned silver during his trip to the University Games in 2009 . His first year at the helm was a highly successful one, leading both programs to national rankings throughout the season . The women’s program was as high as 15th heading into the NCAA Championships where six Nittany Lions com-peted along with five on the men’s side . Vincent Reydams, Patrick Schirk, Jason Goldner, Basil Kaaki, and Brian Alden all received Honorable Mention All-American to lead the Lions to a 32nd place finish . The women placed 38th led by two Honorable Mention All-American finishes from Kelly Nelson and one from Kaitlin O’Brien . In addition, the men’s and women’s squads combined to break an astonishing 14 school records in Hargis’ first season . Since then, Hargis has been able to recruit top notch classes to help Penn State return it to a Big Ten Championship-caliber program . In 2011, Hargis’s men’s team swam to sixth place at Big Ten, which included an All-Big Ten Sec-ond Team performance by Mitch Scherer . Hargis also helped coach the 200 medley team to All-America honors when it touched the wall in ninth place . Hargis returned to Happy Valley where he was an assistant coach at Penn State from 2003-06 before moving onto Arkansas-Little Rock where he was named head women’s swimming coach in February of 2007 . He was also the head coach and the chief executive officer of the Little Rock Arkansas Dolphins

club swimming program . “John has demonstrated that he has the ability to continue the success of our swimming program both athletically and academically,” said Director of Athletics Tim Curley at the time of his hire . “He has been a swimmer at the highest level, having won an Olympic gold medal, and he also has a large ar-ray of experience as a coach, both at the collegiate and the club levels . We are extremely pleased to welcome John and his wife, Lauren, and son John back to Happy Valley and are prepared to help him keep our swimming programs mov-ing forward” “We are delighted to have John Hargis return to Penn State as our head coach of men’s and women’s swimming,” said Susan Delaney-Scheetz, Penn State As-sociate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator at the time of Hargis’s hiring . “John’s knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for swimming and Penn State will enable him to take the program to new heights .” With Hargis at the helm, he became just the second head swimming coach at Penn State since the men’s and women’s swimming programs were merged into one following the 2000-01 season . He is Penn State’s fourth head women’s coach of all-time and just the sixth head coach in men’s program history . “I am glad to be back in the blue and white of Penn State and it is exciting to be back in the tradition of ex-cellence that Penn State pro-vides, both athletically and academically,” said Hargis prior to his first season as head coach . “Both my fam-ily and I are excited to once again be part of the Penn State culture and we look forward to continuing the tradition that has been set by those before us in the swimming program .” Hargis left his assistant post at Penn State in Sep-tember of 2006 to take over the Arkansas Dolphins pre-mier swim club, which was also his former club team . In that role, he directed the program to the overall team

state long course title in 2007, winning both the men’s and women’s team title for only the second time in program history . He also led both the men’s and women’s teams to the overall team state short course title in 2008, securing the Dolphins their first back-to-back combined state titles in their 48 year history . He joined Arkansas-Little Rock as an assistant coach in November of 2006 before being elevated to head coach in February of 2007 . While heading the Trojan program, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference, the women’s team was recognized by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America for having a team GPA of over 3 .0 in both the fall and spring semes-ters . While with the Nittany Lions, Hargis was on the staff that led the women’s team to back-to-back Big Ten Championships in 2005 and 2006 . He coached several NCAA, Olympic Trials and U .S . Nationals qualifiers and also directed all aspects of men’s recruiting . Hargis was instrumental in helping recruit 2008 NCAA Champion Patrick Schirk to Penn State . He also assisted with several other aspects and day-to-day operations of the program, including the creation and implementation of a training regimen for both the men’s and women’s sprinters, breaststroke and IM swimmers . Prior to arriving at Penn State, Hargis was an assistant coach at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas for two years during the 2002-03 season where he also coached NCAA, Olympic and U .S . Nationals qualifiers and guided the Moun-tain West Conference Male Swimmer of the Year . He was the head age group coach for the Raleigh Swimming Association club team for two years prior to his stint at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas . Before that, he served for three years as an assistant to the athletic director at his alma mater, Auburn University . A native of Little Rock, Ark ., Hargis is a 1999 graduate of Auburn with a degree in health promotion/sports management . Hargis is one of the most touted swimmers to ever come out of the state of Arkansas . For the Tigers, he was part of a national championship team in 1997 and a member of the 200 medley relay team that broke NCAA, U .S . Open and NCAA Meet records in 1997 . He was also a part of the NCAA champion 400-medley relay team in 1997 . A three-time Southeastern Conference cham-pion in the 100 butterfly, he also held the SEC record in that event and was a 12-time All-American . He owns an Olympic Gold Medal, which he earned at the 1996 Atlanta games as part of the U .S . 400 medley relay team . He also won the 100 fly at the U .S . Olympic Trials in 1996 . Hargis was inducted into the Arkansas State Swimming Hall of Fame in 2001 and was selected as one of Arkansas’ 100 Greatest Athletes of all-time . Hargis resides in State College with his wife, Lauren, and two young sons .


Craig Brown, a two-time Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year, enters his 26th season at the helm of the Nittany Lion divers . Brown has consistently produced quality divers that have represented Penn State at the conference and national level . Since taking over the div-ing program in 1986, he has sent 18 divers to the NCAA Championships, with at least one in all but four seasons since 1988 . In 1995 and 1998, he coached three divers to the NCAA Championships . He helped Chris Devine to the one-meter Big Ten title in 1994 and a third place NCAA fin-ish . More recently, he guided Drew Jackson to four consecutive trips to the NCAAs from 1995-98 . Five years ago, he coached Penn State’s first Big Ten diving champion since Devine in 1994 as Mike Alderman, who graduated in 2007, won the one-meter event . Alderman also qualified for the U .S . Open Diving Cham-

pionships that year . Then, Alderman wrapped up his career with a pair of top eight finishes on the springboards at Big Ten’s and once again qualified for NCAA’s . His younger sister, Meg, is a current member of the Nittany Lion diving family . Brown also helped another diver, Adam Pierce, qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2006, where he was Penn State’s lone representative and made the best of it . He placed 15th in the three-meter diving event to pick up two points for the Nittany Lions . Pierce was a two-time NCAA qualifier . Brown has recently developed Kim Peifer into one of the top divers in the Big Ten . Peifer walked on to the diving team after being a member of the Penn State track and field team for her first two years . She went on to score points on the three-meter board at Big Ten’s two years ago . Brown was the 1994 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year and was also named the 1999 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year after coaching Jaime Jaax to the Big Ten three-meter title, the first Nittany Lion woman to win a Big Ten diving title . Overall, Brown has coached 12 different divers that have qualified for NCAA Championships Brown headed the men’s and women’s diving programs at Penn from 1983-85 in his first collegiate coaching post . Prior to his appointment at Penn, Brown coached at Philadelphia area clubs, including the Warrington Swim and Tennis Club (1982-83), Hat-boro-Horsham Aquatic Club (1983), Hideaway Swim Club (1980-81), Hatboro Memorial Pool (1976, 78-79) and Hatboro YMCA (1976) . As a diver at Penn State, Brown won the 1981 Eastern Collegiate Cham-pionship in the three-meter springboard and the one-meter springboard in 1979 . He was the team’s Most Valuable Diver in 1978, 1979 and 1981 . As a scholastic diver, Brown was the Pennsylvania state champion in 1977 and the Bux-Mont League Champion in 1975 and 1976 . He won the YMCA national one-meter championship in 1977 and was the District I titlist in 1976 . A two-time Junior Olympic finalist, he also earned All-Bux-Mont honors in soccer and in football as a placekicker . Brown graduated from Penn State with a degree in Environmental Re-source Management and worked from 1982-85 as an inventory control and purchasing manager with the Moreland Corporation in Willow Grove, Pa . He also was an assistant quality control manager and production supervisor with Moreland . Brown has two children, a 12-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter .

Aaron Mahaney, formerly an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will begin his fourth year as a part of the Penn State swimming and diving coaching staff . “Mahaney brings a great knowledge for distance swimming,” head coach John Hargis said . “He is a young man who is hungry and thirsty for knowl-edge .” Mahaney previously served as the assistant coach at Hawaii dating back to the 2005-06 season . While at Manoa, he coached distance freestyle, but-terfly and individual medley events . Hawaii tied Penn State for 23rd overall at the NCAA Championships in 2008 . A graduate of Big Ten rival Michigan State, Mahaney holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports psychology . While at East Lansing, Mahaney was Freshman of the Year and Most Valuable Performer in 2002 . He also competed in the 2000 and 2004 Swimming Olympic Tri-als . Before moving to Hawaii, Aaron was the head intramural swim coach at the University of Georgia from 2004-05 . During that time, he taught as a physical education substitute teacher at the Clark County School District .Mahaney began his coaching experience in his hometown of Easton, Pa ., where he was an assistant coach at Lafayette College for two years . “Aaron has great contacts and uses his peers nationwide to learn,” said Hargis . “He is a Pennsylvania native who knows the state well and should be a valuable tool in recruiting .” Mahaney is a two-time swimming scholastic All-American . He is a regis-tered coaching member of USA Swimming .

Liz McMillan (nee Klink), formerly an assistant coach at Florida State University, is in her fourth season as part of the Penn State swimming and diving program . “Liz is one of the top swimming recruiters in the nation,” said head coach John Hargis . “She brings a wealth of knowledge with her and, being from New Jersey, is well-acquainted with Mid Atlantic aquatics .” In her first season at Penn State, Klink helped lead both Lion squads to strong seasons . The women finished 38th at the NCAA Championships while the men were 32nd . Also, seven Nittany Lions (Kaitlin O’Brien, Kelly Nelson, Vincent Reydams, Patrick Schirk, Jason Goldner, Basil Kaaki, and Brian Alden) garnered honorable mention All-American status, Nelson in two events . During her tenure at Florida State, Klink coordinated all recruiting, ad-ministered the middle-distance training group, organized equipment orders through Nike and tracked the progress of incoming swimmers . She coached the women’s swimming team to an Atlantic Coast Conference champion-ship in 2005-06 and the men’s squad to an ACC title in 2006-07 . Klink also oversaw four Seminole swimmers who were named NCAA All-Americans, including South African Romy Altmann, who placed seventh in the 200 backstroke at the 2007 NCAA Championships . Klink previously worked at Virginia Tech as an assistant swim coach from August, 2002 through June, 2004 . She coordinated all recruiting, oversaw practice groups, organized all travel logistics and managed meet entries . “Liz communicates well with the athletes,” said Hargis . “She coaches and interacts with a passion for swimming .” A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Klink earned her bach-elor’s degree in elementary education and math in 2001 and obtained her master’s in elementary education from Connecticut in 2002 . She graduated summa cum laude and earned numerous academic honors including Big East Academic All-Star (1998-2001), New England Scholar (1998-2000) and National Golden Key Honor Society (1999-2001) . In addition to her academic achievements, Klink was a mem-ber of Connecticut’s varsity swim-ming and diving team . She was a BIG EAST finalist in the 200 and 500-meter freestyle events in 2000 and 2001 . She was the university re-cord holder in the 500 freestyle, and 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays .

Thad Schultz is in his second year as Penn State’s assistant coach for the 2010-11 season . Schultz brings a wealth of experience to the Nittany Lion program, including assistant coaching duties at fellow Big Ten rival Ohio State . “I’m excited for the opportunity to work at a great university like Penn State,” said Schultz at the time of his hiring . “They have a rich tradition of athletics and great academics . It will be a fun experience .” “Thad brings everything we look for in an assistant,” said Nittany Lion head coach John Hargis . “He’s obviously got the college experience . Lately, he’s been working with some of the best swimmers in the world . Just to see the levels he’s worked and all the success he’s had at those levels makes him an exciting addition to our staff .” Before Penn State, Schultz served as assistant coach and senior division leader at SwimMac in Charlotte, N .C . While there, he performed a vari-ety of tasks while working with the Age-Group swim program consisting of over 750 swimmers . He worked with three members of the 2008 U .S . Olympic Team, four from the 2004 squad and eight from the U .S . National Team Qualifier . Prior to starting at SwimMac in 2007, he served as Aquatics Director and head coach at Brunswick YMCA in Brunswick, Ga . He was in charge of all aspects of a swim program that featured over 50 swimmers . Schultz’s extensive swimming experience includes collegiate coaching ex-perience at Ohio State from 2000-02 . He served as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes, specifically with the men’s program . While there, the program had four NCAA Qualifiers, three school records and eight Academic All-Americans . He also helped recruit 15 High School All-Americans .

His collegiate coach-ing experiences goes back to 1998 when he was an assistant coach at Clemson University . Working with the men’s and women’s swim programs, he helped lead the Tigers to eight NCAA Qualifiers, two ACC records, 10 school records and eight Aca-demic All-Americans while bringing in 22 High School All-Amer-icans . Schultz started coach-ing in 1991 at the Ohio State University Swim Camp under national team coaches Bill Wad-ley and Jim Montrella . He also worked the same camp in 1992, `96 and ‘99 .

Aaron Workman joins the Nittany Lion staff for his second season in 2010-11 . Workman comes from an established background including his most recent position as assistant swim coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh . “As a head coach, you always keep [someone like Aaron] on your radar,” said Hargis . “I’ve had my eye on Aaron for the last three years he’s been at Pitt . He’s recruited back-to-back top-25 classes . His sprinters have contin-ued to compete well and continued to improve .” During his time at Pittsburgh, Workman was in charge of assisting in all aspects of team preparation, including practices and weight training . As the recruiting coordinator, he was able to sign two top-25 and honorable men-tion classes . For the past three years, Workman has also been involved with Team Pittsburgh Aquatics . While there, Workman organized all aspects of one of the largest meets in Allegheny Mountain Swimming and developed practice agendas for the competitors . Before working at Pittsburgh, Workman held the same duties as assis-tant swim coach and recruiting coordinator at UNLV from 2005-2007 . He helped coach his team to three straight Mountain West Conference cham-pionships while also recruiting the 18th best men’s recruiting class in the country . Not only did his teams have a great athletic track record, but they also excelled out of the pool, consistently ranking in the top 20 academi-cally in the nation . Workman’s college work began early as he served as the assistant swim coach at Wittenberg University from 2003-2004 and the head swim coach at Hollins University from 2002-2003 . At Wittenberg, Workman coached two NCAA All-Americans and a top 20 Division III team . Not only has Workman succeeded as a coach, he was also a very successful swimmer at the University of Kentucky where he graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Broadcasting . Workman was a four-time All-American, four-time academic All-SEC performer and an academic All-American in 2001 . “[Aaaron has] helped take that program to the top of the Big East,” said Hargis . “As a young guy, he’s someone who has always intrigued me . We feel very lucky to have him .”

WEINSTEIN COACHES AWARDThe Weinstein Coaches Award is named in honor of Jerome (Jerry) Weinstein, Class of 1936 and a mem-ber of Penn State’s first swimming team. His love for the sport touched every aspect of the Penn State aquatic program. A man of integrity, honesty, con-viction and impeccable character, he influenced the lives of many people. The award serves as a lasting tribute to him for all the good things he brought to Penn State swimming. It is presented to the team member who not only is the hardest worker, but is sure to give 100 percent to his teammates emotion-ally and physically through the joyous times and the struggles. Weinstein was a World War II veteran and a former executive editor of the Centre Daily Times

LOU MACNEIL AWARDPresented to the swimmer or swimmers for consis-tently outstanding performances contributing the most to the team’s success. The award is named in honor of Lou MacNeil, head coach of the men’s swimming and diving team at Penn State for 18 years. Before retiring in 1984, MacNeil also served as director of aquatics and was an assistant profes-sor of physical education. In 1982, MacNeil received the Distinguished Coach Award from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
