The Landmark Conference is a Division III athletics confer-ence that was formed in the winter of 2005 in an effort to bring

together colleges and universities from the Mid-Atlantic region with similar phi-losophies regarding the role of athletics as part of the overall collegiate experience. On November 30, 2006, it was announced

that The Catholic University of America, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, Moravian College, Susquehanna University and The United States Merchant Marine Academy had formed a soon-to-be-named Division III conference, with The University of Scranton becoming the eighth member in November of 2006.

The most literal inspiration for the Landmark Conference's name comes from the many well-known physical landmarks of the Mid-Atlantic region encompassed by the conference. The name also reflects the significance of the institutions' decision to align them-selves with other colleges and universities of similar size, educa-tional philosophies, and high academic standards. It highlights the conference's intention to stand out not only in athletics, but also in academics, emphasizing educational achievement and the impor-tant role played by athletics in the undergraduate experience.

Ed Karpovich has the second-longest active tenure among all coaches at The University of Scranton. He will begin his 30th season with the Royal golf pro-gram in 2012.

During his tenure the Royals have carded an overall record of 235-104-2 in dual-match competition. He also led Scranton to a Middle Atlantic Conference team champi-onship in 1988. That team, which

featured all-American and MAC individual champion Will Carey III, set an all-time school record with a 24-0 regular-season mark. Twenty of his players have earned all-Middle Atlantic or all-Em-pire 8 Conference honors, while two — Carey and Mike Chomicz — have competed in the NCAA Division III championships.

This past season was one of Karpovich’s most memorable. The Royals went 10-0 in dual-match competition, won their fi rst-

ever Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational title in dramatic fashion playoff with McDaniel College, and placed fourth at the Empire 8 Conference championships, which was Scranton’s second season as a league member. Sophomore Jamie Bresnahan also became the fi rst Royal golfer to earn all-Empire 8 Confer-ence honors, tying for second place with a 72-hole total of 311.

Karpovich has also been an ambassador for the sport, joining with former King’s College head coach Tom Davis in 1999 to found the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational, an annual event that attracts some of the top Division III talent in the country. Glenmaura National also serves as the Royals’ home course. He also served on the NCAA regional committee this past season.

Karpovich is a 1976 graduate of the University and a member of its prestigious Wall of Fame. As a player, he led the Royals to three MAC team titles (1973, 1975, 1976), while capturing MAC individual championships in 1974 and 1976. He also com-peted in the 1974 and 1976 NCAA championships, fi nishing tied for 150th in 1974 and tied for 42nd in 1976. He currently serves as treasurer of Lackawanna County.

Junior Robert Reed is in his fi rst season with the golf team and did not see action in the fall.

The University of Scranton is a community of scholars and learners that offers unique challenges and opportunities. In the Jesuit tradition, the University strives to prepare "men and women for others" through a rigorous academic program and a wide range of extracurricular activities that enhance personal development.

Intercollegiate athletics are an important component within a comprehensive learning experience at The University of Scran-ton. Over the last 31 years, the University's student-athletes have achieved an impressive record: 84 NCAA tournament appear-ances, three national championships (two in men's basketball and one in women's basketball), 54 all-Americans, 25 academic all-Americans and 15 NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipi-ents.

The University's heritage traces its roots to 1888 with the found-ing of St. Thomas College by the Diocese of Scranton. The school received its university charter in 1938. The Society of Je-sus began administering the University in 1942, when Scranton became one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.

The University consists of four academic divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences, Kania School of Management, Panuska College of Professional Studies, and the College of Graduate and Continuing Education. Full-time undergraduate enrollment for the 2011 fall semester is 4,069.

The University awards bachelor's and master's degrees in a wide variety of programs in business, communication, education, health sciences, humanities, and natural and social sciences. Scranton also features strong pre-professional programs in medi-cine and law. The University has had well over 100 Fulbright and other international scholars since 1972, placing it among the top undergraduate schools in the country in this category.

The faculty, 85 percent of whom hold a doctoral degree, are teachers who also pursue scholarship and research, often involv-ing students. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13 to 1.

The University offers fi ve-year bachelor's/master's programs, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, an Honors Program, a Faculty-Student Research Program, study abroad, internships, Army ROTC and exchange programs with other Jesuit colleges and universities.
