Transfer from Northwestern State
After another impressive fall season, the Vulcans again look to challenge on the national stage during the 2012 campaign. Under two-time ITA National Coach of the Year Pablo Montana, Cal U has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament four times in the last five seasons. The Vulcans have proven to be the elite program in the PSAC, winning five-consecutive league titles. In each of those years, Cal U has featured the top player in the conference. Reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year Annabel Pieschl is one four returning players for the Vulcans this spring. In her first season with the program, she led the team with 28 victories in singles play after primarily playing at the No. 1 position. A transfer from Stony Brook (N.Y.), Pieschl was the top-ranked player in the region in both singles and doubles last season. She will likely play at second singles this spring with the addition of senior Martina Rubesova, another former NCAA Division I player. Rubesova posted an impressive fall, winning the ITA Atlantic Regional titles in singles and doubles. She enters the spring as the top-ranked player in the region in both singles and doubles after previously playing at Northwestern State (La.). After playing most of last season at second singles, junior Jade Pondicas figures to play at the third slot this spring. She finished second on the team last year with 25 wins after playing at five different positions. Pondicas has combined for over 50 victories in singles play during two-plus years with the program and received All-PSAC West honors for the first time in her career last season. Senior Anastassiya Zherdeva looks to play at fourth singles and enters the spring as the team’s active leader with 65 career victories. After posting an undefeated spring as a freshman, she has posted 22 wins in each of the last two seasons. Fellow senior Franziska Steinhardt figures to move down to the fifth position after playing third singles last season. She earned All-PSAC West honors as a singles player in her first year with the
program after transferring from Illinois State. The trio of freshmen Jolien Borrenberghs, Jesse Burrell and Ramona Czakon will compete for time at the sixth position. Czakon was ranked eighth in the region after an impressive fall season. Borrenberghs appeared on a limited basis while Burrell joined the program at semester break. In addition to a tested singles lineup, the Vulcans feature a skilled doubles group. All four of the returning players tallied at least 20 victories in doubles play last season, including a team-best 30 wins by Steinhardt while playing with five different doubles partners. Rubesova and Steinhardt will open the spring as the No. 6 tandem in the country. During the fall season, the tandem captured the ITA Atlantic Regional title in doubles play and placed sixth at the ITA National Championships. Steinhardt has been a regional doubles champion in each of her seasons with the program. An All-PSAC West doubles team last season, Pieschl and Pondicas figure to move to the second position this spring. Last year, the tandem combined for a 25-9 record with five victories against regionally-ranked opponents. Following an impressive fall, Pieschl and Pondicas open the spring as the No. 15 doubles team in the country. Czakon and Zherdeva look to round out the doubles lineup for the Vulcans. Zherdeva has posted at least 20 wins in doubles play in each of the last two seasons while playing with a different partner each year. The Vulcans will once again be tested by several dual matches this spring against NCAA Division I opponents. Cal U is scheduled to face four BIG EAST members, in addition to matches against defending-National Champions Barry (Fla.) and Williams (Mass.). With such a talented team returning this spring, Cal U looks to capture a sixth-straight league title and to challenge the rest of the premier teams in NCAA Division II for a national title.

Entering his 10th season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania tennis program, Pablo Montana has built the Vulcans into one of the elite collegiate tennis programs in the nation. Montana, the 2007 and 2010 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year, has posted a combined dual record of 190-56 overall and 61-15 mark in PSAC play to become the winningest coach in program history. The Vulcans have earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament in eight of the last nine seasons, including quarterfinal appearances in four of the last five years. Additionally, Montana has coached four All-Americans in Yumi Matsuto, Inga Chilingaryan, Helena VanEysendeyk and Jutta Bornefeld. In 2008, Cal U capped one of Montana’s finest seasons with an appearance in the Round of 16, where it fell to West Florida to finish No. 9 in the ITA rankings with a 26-3 overall record. That same season, Chilingaryan and VanEysendeyk earned All-America status in doubles by finishing No. 2 in the ITA rankings with a 20-1 record. The pair also received All-America laurels in singles action with VanEysendeyk ranking No. 4. The previous season, the Vulcans advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. For his efforts in guiding Cal U to a school-best 28-2 record and a No. 6 ranking by the ITA, Montana received Wilson/ITA National and Regional Coach of the Year accolades. Under his coaching, the Vulcans featured their first All-American doubles team in Chilingaryan and Matsuto.
Montana guided Cal U to the NCAA Tournament in his first season with the program in 2003 with a 12-9 overall record. Over the next three seasons, the Vulcans posted at least 17 victories and appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice. In addition to the success on the court, Montana has guided the program into an elite program in the classroom. In each of the last eight seasons, the Vulcans have earned ITA All-Academic honors with 28 players receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete status. A tennis standout in college, Montana was a two-time All-American at Tennessee from 1993-96. He was a three-time All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection, earning first-team honors in both singles and doubles play in 1996. Montana and doubles partner Chris Mahony were ranked No. 4 in the country at the end of his junior year, posting 23 victories. Montana and Mahony rank second in Volunteers’ history with 75 career doubles wins. After his collegiate career was finished, he served as a national coach with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) in 1999. In his first college coaching experience, Montana served as the assistant coach at Vanderbilt for three seasons. While with the Commodores, he helped coach Andrew Nisker, who in 2000 became the first Vanderbilt player to win an SEC Championship since 1982. During Montana’s tenure at Vanderbilt, the Commodores were ranked as high as No. 28 in 1999, the highest mark in the history of the program to that point. A native of Miami, Montana completed
his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Regents (N.Y.) in 1998 before he earned his master’s degree from Cal U in 2004. Montana and his wife Karen reside in Canonsburg, Pa., with their two children, Alexis and Silas.

For more than 150 years Cal U has been known for its educational excellence and for its commitment to the core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility. At Cal U, students are our first priority. As an undergraduate, students can choose from more than 150 programs of study in three undergraduate colleges. To advance our mission of building the character and careers of students, Cal U relies upon committed faculty, motivated students, challenging programs and exceptional facilities. Our Character Education Institute provides character education to Cal U students, faculty and staff, and corporate training to regional organizations and businesses. The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into
NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s
estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly
doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.
Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division
I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000
who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Over the last decade, the Vulcans have transformed into the most dominant team in the Atlantic Region and one of the elite programs across NCAA Division II. Leading the transformation has been head coach Pablo Montana, a former two-time All-American doubles player while at Tennessee. For his effort, Montana has been selected the ITA National Coach of the Year twice in his career. In the years preceding his hire, Cal U posted a pair of two-win seasons and the 2001-02 campaign was suspended due to an incomplete roster. Montana made an immediate impact with the program, as the Vulcans qualified for the NCAA Tournament in his first season. Cal U finished the season with a 12-9 overall record and was ranked seventh in the region. After not playing the previous year, sophomores Linda Escobedo and Olga Gonzalez earned All-PSAC honors for the second time in their careers. Cal U built upon the success the following season, compiling an 18-8 mark and ranking sixth in the region. However, the Vulcans finished sixth in the conference and were not selected to the post-season. Escobedo was named to the All-PSAC First-Team for the first time in her career. Gonzalez also garnered league honors, as she received second-team accolades as a junior. In 2005, Cal U captured its first PSAC West title in more than a decade and advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament. The Vulcans finished the season with a 17-9 overall record and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. For his efforts, Montana was selected the PSAC West Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Escobedo, Gonzalez and junior transfer Melissa Anderson each received All-PSAC West First Team honors. Escobedo finished her career with nearly 50 victories in singles play after leading the team in wins as a senior. A native of Texas, she was also the recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Regional Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The award is presented to a player who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. With the addition of Inga Chilingaryan, the Vulcans posted 17 wins in 2006, while repeating
as divisional c h a m p i o n s and finishing as the runner-up at the PSAC Championships. A dominating player, C h i l i n g a r y a n posted a 29-1 record in singles and was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Year. In 2007, Cal U ascended onto the national stage after totaling a school record 28 victories and ranking No. 6 in the country. Montana guided
the Vulcans to their first PSAC Championship since 1993 and led the program to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. For his efforts, Montana was named the ITA National Coach of the Year. Chilingaryan repeated as PSAC West Athlete of the Year and teamed with newcomer Yumi Matsuto to earn ITA All-America status as a doubles team. The following year, the Vulcans repeated as PSAC Champions and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year with 26 wins. Junior Helena VanEysendeyk and Chilingaryan became the most dominating doubles team in school history, finishing the year No. 2 in the country. Both standouts earned All-America honors as both singles and doubles players. Anchored by the play of VanEysendeyk in 2009, Cal U again reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA T o u r n a m e n t and claimed a t h i r d - s t r a i g h t conference title. V a n E y s e n d e y k was named the ITA Senior National Player of the Year after finishing the season with a 26-2 record in singles and 30 wins in doubles play. Even with the departure of the all-time w i n n i n g e s t player in school history, Montana led the Vulcans to a 24-6 record and a fourth-
consecutive PSAC Championship the following year. Cal U also made a second-straight appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Jutta Bornefeld became the first freshman in school history to earn All-America status, as she finished the year as the No. 19 singles player in the country. The ITA Regional Rookie and PSAC West Athlete of the Year, Bornefeld posted 20 wins during the spring season. Cal U continued its run to the quarterfinals in 2011, finishing with a 22-8 overall record. Junior transfer Annabel Pieschl was named PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was one of three players to earn All-PSAC West honors. Building on previous success, the Vulcans look to maintain their dominance in the PSAC and the Atlantic Region while still challenging for the first National Championship in program history.

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.
He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning.
In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received
the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.
Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan tennis. I am confident that Coach Pablo Montana, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the tennis tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the Fall 2011 semester, a total of 239 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 student-athletes earned the honor during previous fall semester. For the 11th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Tennis and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011-12 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
