A Fond FarewellI can’t begin to adequately portray how fortunate I have been to serve as Executive Director. The place was a “diamond in the rough” when I began in December 2000. Gradually, the Schauer Center transformed into the cultural jewel of Washington and Dodge counties and beyond, earning its place as the region’s premiere arts center. It was my privilege and honor to be at the helm of YOUR facility for almost 12 years. The Schauer Center (and the credit for its success) belongs to the community and especially to all of you who have supported it.

Some thoughts I’d like to leave you all with...· One of the most remarkable impressions left on me is the wealth of artistic talent in this area. From HUHS musicals to Hartford Players’ productions, to Community Chorus and City Band concerts to exhibits by local visual artists, I was consistently impressed. I urge everyone to get involved with the local arts scene or at the very least, support and patronize local arts groups. These are your friends and neighbors working to improve the quality of life for all citizens of the area.

· Remember that the Schauer Center is committed to changing lives. We make the world a better place one person at a time… helping a student find their talent, bringing the community together for shared experiences, and allowing a person to escape their troubles, even if only for an hour or two.

· The Schauer Center is a catalyst for creativity… a theater company (Jim & I Productions), a visual arts group (Kettle Moraine Fine Arts Guild), and a School of the Arts (as well as the Creative Arts Studios facility)… none of these existed prior to the Schauer Center‘s development. My wish is that new arts activities and organizations continue to be “born” through the auspices of the Schauer Center.

I have been lucky to work with such talented staff and a dedicated Board of Trustees throughout my time. They have been supportive, nurturing, and embracing of a common vision for the Schauer Center. Please continue to support them.

The farewell reception given in my honor was humbling beyond words. I was so touched. I can’t say thank you enough to all of those who planned, participated, and attended. It was an occasion that has left an indelible mark on my memory.

Thank you for these life-changing experiences, for the support and encouragement, for the opportunity of a lifetime. My parting request is that the Schauer Center continue to receive your utmost attention. Please help keep this “gem” shining bright for years to come. I look forward to seeing many familiar faces when I return in the future, joining the ranks of the audience along with all of you.

Fondly,

Thomas J. Robbins Executive Director, December 2001 - July 2012

Schauer Community School of the ArtsThe Community School of the Arts served 1,095 students of all ages through a variety of hands-on educational programming in theater, music, dance, and the visual arts. The CSA also presented two public youth choir and string concerts and two public dance recitals in 2011-12, serving an additional 1,449 patrons.

Supported by The Windhover Foundation funded by Quad/Graphics & the Quadracci Family, with additional support from the West Bend Community Foundation. KMYSO is presented by The Terri & Verne Holoubek Family Foundation.

The Schauer Center expanded facilities and educational programs in Fall 2011 with the “Creative Arts Studios” located at 30 S. Johnson Street, Hartford. The Studios house dance and visual arts programs associated with the Schauer Community School of the Arts. The momentum for the expansion came primarily from expanding enrollment within the Schauer School of Dance. A dance studio opened at Schauer Center in January 2007 with 84 students. By the Winter/Spring 2011 session, enrollment had morphed to 174 students, testing the limits of the Schauer Center’s modest studio facilities. The new location also helps to reduce ongoing congestion resulting from multiple, concurrent activities on the Schauer Center’s upper level. The 30 S. Johnson Street property underwent a $50,000-plus “facelift” to be transformed into the best possible arts education venue. Formerly a fitness club, the building boasts 4,000 square feet of space. Two racquetball courts were converted to dance studios, virtually doubling the Schauer Center’s capacity to provide dance instruction. One of the studios offers a viewing window for parent observation. The new facility also has 700 square feet of multi-purpose visual arts studio space. Finally, an adjoining parent/student lounge offers an official “waiting area,” as well as a quiet place to work or study. With the expansion of our facilities, services, and programming at 30 S. Johnson Street, the Schauer Center reinforced its role as a vital player in sustaining downtown Hartford as a dynamic location for residents and visitors alike. It was also a fitting addition as the Community School of the Arts celebrated 10 years in Fall 2011.

Stage!‘From Page to Stage’ is a collaborative effort between the Schauer Center, the Jack Russell Memorial Library, and the Friends of the Library. New for the 2011-12 season, the pilot program was supported by the Hartford Rotary Club which enabled over 350 free books to be distributed to area families who participated in activities at the Library and to Hartford teachers at Rossman Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, St. Kilian, and Peace Lutheran schools for use in their classrooms.

The ultimate premise of ‘From Page to Stage’ is to promote reading, the new library, and the arts by featuring these stories as they transition from books into a live performance. Most events on the Schauer Center’s 2011-12 Family Series were based on children’s literature, but the Schauer Center and the Library partnered on two titles: Sylvester & The Magic Pebble and The Magic School Bus.
