    Club Captains Message

Greetings to Kelburn on a fine, sunnySaturday.

We welcome Wellington United today, last years Capital 2 champions. Specialthanks go Wellington for their win overTawa, that kept us top of the table despitethe hiccup last week at windy Seatoun.

Okay, so I may be overly optimistic abouta couple of things. Firstly that its sunnyand secondly that the Firsts are actually

playing at Kelburn Park. As the First Teamreport in this programme notes, Unis topside hasnt played at home since April.

Its due to a number of reasons, with games being moved to Te Whaea, or CrawfordGreen. But it is frustrating for the players, supporters and our bar manager that theclubs top mens side has been unable to appear here on the green grass of KP.Especially as the side is playing so well and currently sits atop the table.

Theres not much we can do about the weather, and chances are it will only getworse in the second half of the season. The new artificial pitches will take some of theload but Capital Football is already talking about the season continuing into earlySeptember. So just be careful planning that team trip away. You might find yourselfdouble-booked with an away game at Happy Valley

As some of you might know, Ive just returned from a couple of weeks in Moroccoand the UK and in that time I managed to see a couple of matches. This included

Kawab v Raja Athletic Club in Marrakech, where the crowd was insane, the stadiumwas as rundown as Newtown Park and the standard of the football was not much betterthan Capital 9. The other game was the Womens Champions League Final at CravenCottage, two days before the Wembley showdown. A match report is included later inthe programme.

Two highlights of the trip stand out. One was getting a photo with the ChampionsLeague trophy (technically I got closer to the trophy than Wayne Rooney did thisyear). The other was enthralling a couple of young Czech ladies on the Tube with a

detailed explaination of what the voo-wah-fic on my club hoodie meant

(and no, thats not a Lynx deodorant-type plug for the hoodies, though if you areinterested, see Marcus in the clubrooms)

I noticed a couple of things on my return. First was the presence of our veteran

striker Graham, who emulated Shane Smeltz and swapped back to us after a short stintin a completely alien, unfriendly environment. In Smeltzs case it was Turkey; forGraham it was Tawa Im still not sure which would be a worse place to play footballin. Still, welcome back Graham. Perhaps the lure of the famous VUWAFC Darts

Night was enough to entice you back

The other was coming back to the KP clubrooms and hearing some of the old clubsongs being sung during a game of Mexican. Thank you Gaz and Rossimar fordigging out the old Gossies fine book and inducting a new generation of players to thetraditional side of the club. Football might be why we turn up every week, but theclub culture, the friendships we make and the chance to party at Red Square until theearly hours is why we come back every year

On that note, a plug for the Mid Year event coming up on Saturday 16 July, hereat KP. Id like to invite you all to the Captains Ball, a celebration of the halfway

point in the season, with a captainy theme for some reasons I wont go in to here.

Well keep you posted on the details

And remember, next weekend here at KP sees the big derby game, Gossies v Firstsat 2.30. Come down and cheer one or both of those sides on.

    Craig

Also: Call out for details of top scorers for each team in the side, so we can let youknow the race for the Golden Boot. Currently Womens Firsts striker Lauren Hakkaartleads with 13 goals, though we suspect there's a fella from the Unicorns who's gotabout 50). Can each captain email [email protected] withdetails.

    First Team Report

So, it turns out that we havent played at home in 10 weeks (since April 16). Ourrecord since our last home game has been five wins, one loss and one draw (scoring 15and conceding five), leaving us top of the table on goal difference.

Instead of reporting on the loss to Seatoun last week (they were playing with 13 ifyou include the goal post and the ref, but Im not bitter at all), the 10 things we learntin the last 10 weeks seems more appropriate.

    1. It takes four flights to get from Wellington to Iceland.

    2. There is no such thing as a quiet night when Jimmy, Krip and Gaz areinvolved.

    3. Even though we wear a non-threatening colour like yellow, the referees stillseem to dislike us.

    4. Retro-keepers kits are cool.

    5. Krip is the self-proclaimed master of planking (see his performance againstTawa B for further details).

    6. Abo CAN get Wilsons sisters number (and, as a side note, he CAN getthrown out of JJ Murphys).

    7. Elliot is definitely Eddies son.

    8. We probably have the best batch of new arrivals to the first team in a numberof years this year (Aiden, Daan, Elliot, Franklin, and Tom). Only one of themhas yet to score for the first team.

    9. We will have a golden boot who manages to get more than 6 goals for theseason.

    10. Miramar is part of Kelburn, and Kelburn is part of Newtown judging byCapital footballs scheduling of Capital 2 games.

So this week we turn our focus on to our nemesis from last season, who nabbed a

late winner to secure the league out on KP last year. While they are not flying quite sohigh at the moment, they are still a danger team as shown by last weeks result againstTawa (cheers guys!). Hopefully we can repeat our performance from round one andregain some winning momentum to get our push for promotion back on track!

    Womens UEFA Champions League Final

May saw the final of the Womens UEFA Champions League in London, two days beforethe Barca-Man U clash at Wembley. With the ticket prices from 5 instead of 245, yourintrepid club captain headed off to Craven Cottage to join the 18,000-odd spectators. And

before you ask, I didnt see the Michael Jackson statue

Some of the spectators seemed a little vague about the game and the teams, including theman beside me asking if there were any good players as if making the final didnt proveyou were a good player. Anyhoo, the game was between Frances Olympique Lyonnais

and 2010 champions FFC Turbine Potsdam from just outside Berlin. Both sides includedinternational players from around Europe, many of who will be playing in the WomensWorld Cup next month.

Following token pre-match entertainment that made the Phoenix pre-game look like anOlympic opening ceremony, the match kicked off with Potsdam launching fast attacks on theLyonnais goal. However, it was Wendie Renard, the French towering right-back withequally towering hair who pounced on a goalmouth scramble after 30 minutes. Potsdamtried to get back into the game, mainly through their speedy wingerIsabel Kerschowski, but

were down 1-0 at halftime. Less than a minute into the second half, they had a great chancebut just missed the target. A cross by Kerschowski was fluffed by the Potsdam striker, who, with only the keeper to beat, hit it over the post. A double substitution for Lyonnais just

before the end was inspired, with Swedish strikerLotta Schelin, crossing to the new subLara Dickenmann for the Swiss international to control and send into the top corner fromoutside the penalty area, wrong-footing the keeper. The final score was 2-0 and theChampions League trophy headed off across the Channel.

So, my thoughts? I have to say that Potsdam did not play like a German side. They werequick, attacking and showed a lot of flair, all very un-Teutonic attributes. The Frenchdominated the game and deserved the win. I even think the sceptical spectator beside mewas impressed. On the way out, he asked me if this game happened every year!

    Goss Spot

Gossies 4 Upper Hutt 4, Kelburn Park, Saturday 18 June

    Huh???

How did we give up 3 two goal leads in the same match (for thosemathematically challenged we led 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 and finished up with a 4-4draw)?

Why was the opposition coach allowed to remain on the sideline after the refereehad already sent him from the sideline and why did he feel the need to send himfrom the sideline in the first place?

How was it that not a single ball ended up on the croquet court during the wholegame?

How is it possible that Matt Wilson scores a hat-trick, lays on the fourth and stilldoesnt end up on the winning side?

Why was the opposition coach then allowed to sub on for the final five minutesdespite having been sent from the sideline earlier?

Why did Robbos Mum let him come out with the rest of the team last weekend? On a positive note at least he was home in bed asleep by 10:30pm.

How is it that despite drawing we still gained ground on both Tawa and the 1sts?

Why did the Upper Hutt players have more time and space than a HimalayanYeti?

The Gossies dont proclaim to have the answers to all of the above questions butwe can certainly answer a few questions with a win over Tawa this weekend.

We will draw on the inspiration of the famous member of the Gossie golfingfraternity Rory McIlroy. After a shocking last major he turns around and spankseveryone at this weeks US open.

Let Kura Street be our Congressional.

    Club Update

    Wakefield artificial

The new artificial turf at Wakefield is now in action! This is great news - it will meanmore games can be played as we move into the wetter months.

Please make sure you follow the guidance below on the use of the Wakefield artificial. One team has already violated these regulations (e.g. by bringing a chilly bin of beer - takenote Scarfies!), and their grade is now no longer permitted to use any artificial turfs inWellington (thankfully no VUWAFC teams are affected by this). Capital Football haswarned that if violations continue, football will lose use of the field altogether. So pleasemake sure you follow the rules!!

    O SMOKIG, ALCOHOL or DOGS.

O FOOD or DRIK (only bottled water)

ALL RUBBISH, including tape MUST BE REMOVED AFTER EACH GAME

Cheap drinks at the clubrooms this Saturday!

It would be great to see all teams up at the clubrooms this Saturday! We'll have the usualreport-backs from each team, a free drink for player of the day, and the standard super-cheapdrinks. We'll also have a happy half hour from 5.30pm with $1 beers. See you all there!

Captain's Ball, Saturday 16 JulyThe infamous VUWAFC mid-season ball will be held on Saturday 16 July, so keep your

diaries free! This year's ball is partly in honour of a significant birthday for Club CaptainCraig "Goldenrod" Harris. Further details to follow (details of the ball, that is - the birthdayinfo is being kept strictly under wraps...).

    Cancellations

The following is a message from Capital Football on cancellations. Please note theadvice that games will be played in the first two weekends of September.

"Capital Football is aware of number of cancellations already this season. 4 cancellations

are allowed for each season. Some grades have had 4 cancellations even at this stage.

Friday night (17/06) Capital Football had managed through a number of transfers to playevery grade that hadnt been cancelled the week before (There were 14 grades cancelled theSaturday before). Unfortunately a call was received Saturday morning that grounds inPorirua were restricted. Therefore 2 further grades were cancelled Capital 8 and Masters 2.This meant that these grades had two cancellations in a row. There is not much CapitalFootball can do in this situation. These grades will obviously be given priority this weekendin terms of playing.

Please note the aim is to give every Senior grade 18 games during the season. Whilstweekend to weekend some grades may be hard done by, hopefully it will balance out comethe end of the season.

  • 8/6/2019 2011-06-25 1sts v Wellington United

    9/12

Having said that the weather is now heading into our usually bad winter months of July andAugust. Should this wet weather continue the ability for every grade to have 18 games by theend of August is severely limited.

Therefore there is an extreme likelihood that in order to finish grades and cup competitionsgames will need to be played in the 1st and 2nd weekends of September. This has been doneto some degree in both the past two seasons.

It has been somewhat difficult previously as Councils require grounds at the start ofSeptember to renovate for the summer codes. However, with 3 artificial turfs Saturday andSunday the games required to be played can be on these weekends.

Some teams may be thinking that competitions will finish by the end of August. Players mayhave other activates post August. Therefore clubs, teams, coaches and players need to beaware of playing games in September. Whilst this makes the season longer, our sport will

have to get used to playing in to September, if this wet weather continues year after year."

polite than others I've been given.

OCCUPATIO: Been at ACC for three years doingweb content things

MARITAL STATUS (UDER THE THUMB?):Married for almost 10 years to Deborah. We've firstmet before some VUWAFC players were born, I'm

PREVIOUS CLUBS: Belmont Juniors, BaildonAFC , Fencibles Olivio Swans

FAVOURITE CLUB: Other than the mightyVUWAFC, I have an unhealthy long distance

affair going on with the mercurial Manchester City. I also like the Phoenix, not only becausethey're local but also because their gift of being sublime or ridiculous, often at the same time, reminds me of City.

FAVOURITE PLAYER: Toss up between City legends Georgiou Kinkladze and ShaunGoater. I'll pick Kinky because he was tremendous despite an addiction to fizzy orange andChinese takeaways. Much like me. Locally, it would have to be the Honey Badgers' goalkeeperfor being hopelessly out of position and helping me end my infamous 20 year goal drought.
