No stranger to finding the net, Cal State Stanislaus has outscored its oppo- nents 15-8, including nine in the second half of play. In fact, 11 different Warriors have scored at least one goal, with four players leading the way with two apiece. Terry Gross, though, leads the team in points with six. Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus split last year’s season series, as both teams won on their respective home fields, but the Seawolves hold a commanding record over the Warriors, as SSU is 26-3-3 over CSUS in the Marcus Ziemer era. Despite suffering their first loss of the 2010 season last weekend against Cal State San Bernardino, the Wildcats remained ranked at No. 20 in this week’s NSCAA Division II poll. Sharing the top spot of the CCAA’s North Division with Sonoma State, Chico State is led by the play of Ferid Celosmanovic, who leads the team with four goals, including a pair in the Wildcats’ 3-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona last Friday. Only three other Chico players have found the net this season -- Chris Akwaja (3), Luis Martinez (2) and Mike Janjigian (1). Sonoma State went 1-0-1 against Chico State last season and are 24-11-2 against the Wildcats in the past 20 seasons. Seawolves Shutout Pioneers, Tritons It was nothing short of domination last week for the Sonoma State men’s soccer team. In Friday’s 2-0 victory over Cal State East Bay, the Seawolves fired 32 total shots at Pioneer goalkeepers, allowing just three by East Bay attackers. On Sunday, UC San Diego held SSU’s shot total down, but the Seawolves still led in that stat category, 13-7, and went on to win 3-0. The Seawolves have won three straight matches heading into their first road trip of the CCAA season. Lighting Up The Scoreboard In just the first six matches of the season, Sonoma State has scored 18 goals, tied with ninth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills for the most in the CCAA so far this season. Ten of the Seawolves’ 18 goals have been scored by just two players -- junior Trevor Hurst and freshman Taylor Varnadore, both with five apiece. It is the most that SSU has scored through six matches since the Seawolves scored 21 goals in the first six matches of 2008. National Spotlight On Sonoma State After three consecutive wins, including two straight shutouts, the Seawolves are back in the national rank- ings. This week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II poll has listed Sonoma State at No. 23. The Seawolves disappeared from the NSCAA poll last week after being ranked 22nd in the preseason poll and 25th in week one. And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers handed out an assist on all three goals scored by the Seawolves in the 5-3 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 10, moving him past Andrew Bailey and in to fifth place on the all-time list. Vickers added an assist in Friday’s win against Cal State East Bay, giving him 24 career assists (and a team-leading five this season). The all-time record of 33 assists is held by former Seawolf Eric Lafon. Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12 Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005. Non-Conference Success Since the start of the 2008 season, Sonoma State has a 12-1-1 record against non-conference opponents, outscoring them 38-13 in those 14 matches. Head Coach Marcus ZiemerThe 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 19 years. Though his squads have had success year in and year out

(just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region Championship in 2007.

Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship.

Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA cham-pionship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play.

In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.
