The Chamber's 2010 Annual Report

Transcript of 2010_Annual_Report

Message from our Chairman

It has been an honor and a pleasure to lead the Chamber in 2010 as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

In 2010, your Chamber was committed to economic development and job growth, workforce development and delivering quality services and networking opportunities to members.

But our strategic priorities for 2010 also highlighted our intent to shape the future economic success of the Springfield area. Under the headings of advocacy and engagement, we began to address big picture issues that threaten our community’s future prosperity including a lack of diversity and a growing culture of poverty among our citizens. We knew we wouldn’t

be able to close the book on these issues within the confines of a calendar year, but through the work of the Chamber staff and volunteers we have made progress. We have pushed the ball into play.

This annual report contains highlights of the milestones that we reached in 2010 to keep our community moving forward toward regional economic sustainability.

Thank you for the opportunity to make a difference this year, and thank you for your involvement and support. Together we are creating opportunities for business, and making our community a better place.

2010 Strategic PrioritiesIn 2010, the Chamber will continue to engage in activities that support regional economic sustainability with a focus on retaining and creating quality jobs, attracting and developing a quality workforce and providing member programs and services to help businesses succeed.

In addition, the Chamber will focus on two critical issues that stand in the way of the region’s future potential economic growth.

Advocacy

• Actively participate in the Good Government Committee which recruits and supports candidates for Springfield City Council. When appropriate, the board will consider candidate endorsements.

• Create the “Voice of Business” Committee to communicate a pro-business message and encourage local government officials to take a balanced approach on policy topics.

• Highlight the red flag issue of increasing rates of poverty in the Springfield area and the social and economic consequences it represents for our commu- nity. In particular, the Chamber will communicate with state legislators and other elected officials on the need for increased funding for pre-K education and job training.

Engagement

• Take a leadership role in encouraging further civic engagement, with a particu- lar focus on underrepresented segments of the population.

• Communicatetheconnectionbetweenaculturallydiversecommunityand economic sustainability through education and engagement of businesses and faith-based organizations to create a community culture that is less isolated and more open to all.

3 Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce

The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit network of more than 1,800 business and professional organizations dedicated to improving the region’s economic climate.

The Chamber represents both large and small businesses. Businesses with 25 or fewer employees reflect nearly 80 percent of our membership. A board of directors, representing member businesses, directs the work of the Chamber, supported by a full-time professional staff.

A strong local economy means better business for everyone. The Chamber works every day to create and maintain an environment where every company, large or small, has the opportunity to succeed.

Economic Development & Job CreationEvery business benefits from economic growth and the creation of new jobs. Through the efforts of the Chamber’s economic development subsidiary, Spring-field Business Development Corporation (SBDC), we’re creating jobs by attracting new businesses to the Springfield area and helping existing Springfield area businesses to expand their operations.

Quality Workforce Development, Retention & AttractionA quality workforce is fundamental to business success now and in the future. Through programs like the Network for Springfield’s Young Professionals and collaboration with the area’s secondary and higher education providers, the

Chamber is working to prevent “brain drain” and to ensure the Springfield area remains competitive as we enter a new knowledge-based economy.

Legislative AdvocacyThe Chamber serves as the voice of Springfield area business interests, working to ensure that local, state and federal lawmakers are aware of the issues that are important to our members and that government decisions at every level support a strong regional business climate and quality economic growth.

Regional LeadershipCollaboration has been one key to our region’s success and it will continue to be important as the area grows. Cities, counties, and chambers of commerce throughout the 10-county region surrounding Springfield come together through the leadership of the Chamber’s Ozarks Regional Economic Partnership.

Business ExposureThrough networking events, business referrals and a variety of marketing options, the Chamber provides the best opportunity for business owners and professionals to network with their peers, develop business connections and elevate their companies’ images in our community.

Regional Economic Sustainability

The Chamber became a member organization of the Good Government Committee. The committee recruits qualified candidates and provides campaign fundraising support for local races.

The Voice of Business committee was formed in 2010 with more than 40 business leaders serving on the committee. From March-December 2010, committee members were present at every Springfield City Council meeting providing a business perspective on a variety of topics.

The Chamber continues to be active in state and federal advocacy, host-ing and/or coordinating more than a dozen advocacy-related events in 2010, including legislative events in Jefferson City, candidate forums, legislative updates and policy-based forums open to all Chamber members.

The Chamber managed the ¼-cent Capital Improvements Sales Tax renewal on the June 8 ballot. The renewal marked the 27th time the Chamber has managed the campaign, and the 23rd success. The issue passed with 70 percent support.

The Chamber held a legislative workshop for state lawmakers that included information on the region’s poverty levels and how to impact the cycle of poverty through investment in education. The session also highlighted the link between Pre-K funding, job training and economic development, as well as the disparity of state funding for OTC compared with other statewide community colleges.

The Chamber and the Mayor’s Commission on Children co-hosted a session featuring Arkansas business leader and early childhood advocate, Hugh McDonald, president and CEO of Entergy Arkansas, Inc. on the importance of investing in early childhood. McDonald provided his perspective on why business owners should consider Pre-K funding as an investment opportunity with a strong return.

The Chamber’s Non-Profit Roundtable group conducted an economic impact survey in 2010. Results of the survey may be viewed in the Community Bet-terment section of the Chamber website (www.springfieldchamber.com). The survey’s findings demonstrate some of the economic and social impacts of non-profit organizations on the Springfield area.

Regional Economic Sustainability

The Chamber participated in an event addressing diversity and economic development in February. The event was sponsored by Brentwood Christian Church, Drury University, Missouri State University Multicultural Student Services, NAACP-Springfield Branch and The Gathering. The conference was divided into two panel discussions and a roundtable with speakers.

Chamber board members and staff have been regularly attending the monthly meeting of the Minorities in Business networking group.

In June and November, representatives from the Grand Rapids Chamber visited Springfield to present 2-day seminars on “Healing Racism.” Approximately 20 community and business leaders attended the sessions.

In August, the Chamber partnered with Springfield Business Development Corporation, the economic development arm of the Chamber to present a panel discussion of local business leaders discussing the challenges their organizations face as a result of our community’s lack of diversity.

Engagement

2010 SpringfieldianBrian Fogle, Community Foundation of the Ozarks A lifetime area resident and graduate of Aurora High School, Fogle has devoted much of his time and expertise to giving back and improving and helping the community. Fogle was a co-founder of the Urban Districts Alliance and Springfield’s First Night, a non-alcoholic celebration of the arts on New Year’s Eve. Fogle has a background in banking, which he has put to use on several community development projects including the design and creation of several community development corporations, an urban neighborhood loan program to help revitalize residential areas in Springfield. Fogle also organized 15 banks in the Springfield area to offer a below market rate loan to assist in the construction of the regional crime lab in Springfield. Fogle’s work has reached beyond the city limits of Springfield, out into the rural areas of the metro region. One community in particular that has benefited from his involvement is Stockton, Missouri. When the community was destroyed by a tornado in 2003, Fogle assisted with the planning for rebuilding. He also helped establish a community development corporation, bringing businesses together to establish a pool of funds to make loans to help local businesses rebuild.
