Central Region Cursillo Encounter (October 30-31, 2010)

I attended the Central Region Cursillo Encounter October 30

th and 31

st, along with 55 other Cursillistas.

Saturday evening we learned about the Foundational Charism of the Cursillo movement from José

Salvador. A charism is a gift from God, granted to a person to bring service to the church and community

through love. It is approved by the hierarchy. In the case of Cursillo, this gift was granted to our founder,

Eduardo Bonnin. Cursillo was born so that Christians will be Christians 24/7. We need to feel that God loves

each of us personally so that we can live a life filled with grace and make the kingdom of God a reality on earth.

Father Frank summed up the word Cursillo with the following:

C harism buds forth into

U ltreya where friends meet and form

R elationships which blossom into

S ervice of brothers and sisters to grow in

I ntimacy which leads to the unconditional

L ove of God, of self, and of others, who are thereby strengthened to

L ive out each day the Gospel values so as to be

O pen to the world in witness of God’s immense love for everyone.

On Sunday, we studied the Ten Topics of Cala Figuera, at the heart of the Gospel and at the heart of the

Charism of Cursillo, presented by Bernie Reilander.

LOVE

LIBERTY

NORMALITY

SINCERITY

CONVICTION

We also heard a witness about Friendship and the Person from Michelle Lazure. We must first be

convinced that God loves us before we can convince others that God loves them. There is an emptiness within

each of us that wants to be filled with a personal relationship with God. When we believe in our own

relationship with God, we‟ll believe that He is in others. Jesus didn‟t wait for friends to come to Him and

people didn‟t have to earn his friendship. Our friendship with Jesus must be visible in our friendships with

others. A friend is someone you can think out loud with and be yourself. Communication is required. We must

not be concerned about what we can get out of a friendship, but what we can give. We need to nurture each

other, pray for each other and respect each other.

I look forward to learning more about our wonderful Cursillo movement at next year‟s Encounter!

School of Leaders

This fall the task was to find a location or locations for our Diocese School of Leaders for Cursillo. After many phone calls and much prayer a place has been found! There is Mass and reconciliation available prior to this if you chose and a 24 hr adoration chapel. How blessed is that!

We are still looking for a location in the Burlington Hamilton area. This School is for all Cursillistas in the Diocese who wish to learn more or rediscover about Cursillo and its method and purpose.

Please mark your calendars’ for every other Friday night beginning on Jan 14th

at St Marks Church at 55 Driftwood Drive in Kitchener between 7:30pm-9:30pm. Please also have the courtesy of leaving a message several days in advance if you are able to attend by calling Sharon Penlington 519-748-1711 or email me at [email protected]. Also you could have your Ultreya leader do a number count the week before and they could let me know too. This way in case of a snow event or other emergency we can contact you to cancel. We can plan for drinks and cups etc.

Now that we have a location I am looking for people who would be willing to help me with facilitating the school like calling people, or helping with set up, introducing topics etc.

I have had just a few topics suggested and am looking for more. Please think about what you would like to learn about. This is our movement. How can we all make it better? Resources are available at your Ultreyas. We in the Kitchener Ultreya that meets on Saturday morning at 08:00am would even consider opening our homes if a place is needed to sleep for those of you from out of town. Sponsors from the latest weekends, as you have been in contact with your friends and recent candidates, consider bringing them along when you come.

This parish has agreed to let us use their basement downstairs. It has no elevator access but if someone cannot do stairs I might be able get another section. I just need to know in advance.

St Marks church offered to us an area that was newly remodelled this year. It is a more intimate area to hold small group gatherings for our School of Leaders. Fr Adrian Lee, the pastor, was very impressed with us and is interested in supporting Cursillo in his parish. Not many in his congregation that he is aware of have experienced a Cursillo but perhaps that can change.

Those who came to participate at the regional encounter in October will remember what a great experience and location this was. This Encounter was run like a School of Leaders.

From the little blue book “Frequently Asked Questions”, published from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Cursillo, it states that the “The School of Leaders is the heart and soul of the Cursillo. The School is the guardian of the Charism.” “It is a place where any Cursillistas who desires to “go deeper” in his/her understanding and use of the method can go.”

Cursillo leaders pursue together, in the spirit of friendship, with those who have a solid knowledge and foundation of the Cursillo Charism, the movement’s structure, purpose, and method.

Page 6: 201012Newsletter

6

It is a place to learn from the sharing of the collective wisdom from people who are living the method. At least trying too... It is a place for those who desire to be strengthened in their knowledge and through shared dialogue on topics directly concerned with Cursillo.

The School of Leaders is not designed to be like a “school in the secular world”, but a place where all Cursillistas, new and veterans, can offer their insights and understanding in an atmosphere of respect.

Many Cursillistas I have encountered at National Conferences have stated that The School is like recapturing the experiences and joy of the Cursillo Weekend with friends on the journey.

The work of the Secretariat and those who desire to serve on team on weekends flows naturally from the School of Leaders.

I will close with my own reflection....

As this Season of Advent comes to a close in preparation for Christmas, I have participated in a advent retreat in Waterloo and been challenged by John the Baptist to prepare for the coming of Jesus. I attended an amazing Cursillo Advent Retreat hosted by the Burlington Ultreya that facilitated time to reflect on the meaning of the topics of: Humility, Silence, Wonder, and Joy, the faith of the Maggi and Zacchius as examples of perseverance in the search for hope and truth.

I have reflected on the recent Sunday advent readings that provoked thoughts in me to ask myself if I would be ready if God called me home to him like the death of my brother-in-law the other week, or other friends who have had relatives who have died in car crashes, illness etc. How much would my life have been an example of love towards my neighbours and friends and family?

In my husband’s December Knights of Columbus magazine it asked the question, “Is it really possible to live in a way that shows the promises of Christ to be true?” I have personally found this answer in the promise of what the method of Cursillo offers me. I really believe just as Eduardo Bonnin Aguilo did many years ago that Cursillo really does offer a solution to life in this world.

That is contact with Christ as my best friend who loves me as I am, and contact with others, my brothers and sisters whom God Created. When I am being Christian by the example of my life and I encourage others, they can discover for themselves that God really loves them too.

I have a daily flip calendar that I like. This page I will share with you. Christmas is....a gift from heaven above. Christmas is hope. Christmas is love.

May you all experience Gods’ love somewhere in this Christmas Season. I pray that you continue to share in that love with the company of friends and family. May the new year in 2011 be full of hope and promise.

The following is a witness talk given at St. Anthony Daniel Ultreya. Feel free to send in your witness

talk for consideration for a future newsletter.

My name is Colleen Weber and I made my Cursillo in Ancaster in 2008. I sat at St. Therese of

Liseux‟ table. I like to think of her as St. Theresa, the Little Flower.

I would like to talk today about one bible passage that has helped me in my journey. I never used the

word Journey until I made my Cursillo but that is exactly what life is.

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to Me, all you who labour and are burdened and I will give you rest”

How many times have I said these words to myself without really letting God take the problems. It

certainly wasn‟t a physical rest I wanted, it was a relief of problems – not just a relief, an erasure of the

emotional roller coaster which often made up my life. I wanted to be known as a very happy person,

always smiling and laughing and mostly I am that way, even if the troubles are drowning me. That‟s

the face I used to put on.

I am the type of person who never likes to rock the boat and I don‟t want my particular boat to be

rocked by anyone else. When the kids were little I remember saying to my mother “I don‟t want to do

this any more” but I had made my choice.

I had a devotion to the Blessed Mother since I was very young and I prayed to her all the time. My

mother gave me the best example because she prayed in song to Mary even when just peeling the

potatoes. I can still hear her. I remember my Aunt Helen who had no children saying to my mother

who had 5 ”Hazel, I never see you pray”, and my mother told her “My whole life is a prayer”.

Mom told me to think of the love I felt for my children and do all the little things for them. This helped

sometimes but mostly I just wanted to do what I had to do to fulfill the role of wife and mother. This

was the vocation I chose and it was expected by the church and by society and by family and that‟s

why I did it.

Spouses, children, church, friends all have expectations and, being a mainly complacent person I

wanted to live up to all of them. I am what is known as a „people pleaser‟. When I fail and I most

certainly have failed many times especially with my children, I become a little depressed and just want

to escape from all of it.

I should have really listened to the words of St. Matthew “Come to Me all you who labour and are

burdened and I will give you rest” when I had my 4th

child 12 years after the 3rd

; when the boys got

into alcohol and drugs and left home; when my husband left us and the youngest was 4 yrs old; when I

had my kidney removed and later when my youngest son was diagnosed with mental illness as well as

being an addict, – I should have listened but I said the words and didn‟t really hear. So I can‟t tell you

how many times I have thought about getting on a bus and never returning.

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart and you will

find rest for yourselves.”

I believe the Holy Spirit directed me to one of my first positive actions and that was going to Al-Anon.

This is a Christian based self-help group and it enhanced my Catholic faith. The loving friends I made

Page 8: 201012Newsletter

8

in that program and all the AA people have given me the tools to make a good life - inside me. They

made me realize that I did the best I could, at the time and place I was in emotionally, physically,

spiritually and all the circumstances of my life. They also made me realize that I was being very

egotistical to assume that I was so important as to think I could be responsible for the choices a grown

adult makes.

Perhaps it is the fact that I am getting a little older but I don‟t worry so much about what others think

about me. My only care is what Christ thinks and I know He loves me. Although I made my Cursillo

only 2 years ago, I have never felt so free of Guilt because that was where Christ took it away. I AM

FREE to grow, to make new friends and to bring new friends to HIM.

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

If I had really listened to those words I would have realized then what I do now –that God made my

burden lighter when I had a roof over my head and food in my mouth, when my children were born

healthy, when my 3rd

child got sober and has remained so for 18 years and when my eldest son came

home safely from Afghanistan. These and so many more blessings were bestowed on me and I thank

God. He made my burden light.

My health is not terrific so I must not take on too much but I feel no Guilt because of this. I do,

however, sometimes feel disappointment that I cannot do more when others my age are able to. This is

a tiny cross to bear.

Now I understand, in my late 60s, what it means to take up your cross and follow Him. The choices I

made in life and how I carried them out were my cross. Christ has made my life so much easier when

I put my trust in Him. Only sometimes was I able to do this and the great feeling of peace and serenity

which I felt at that time should have made me realize that I didn‟t need to worry and suffer as much as

I did.

My children are on the right road physically and mentally but unfortunately not spiritually. My

daughter is the only one practicing the faith, not my 3 boys. I will keep praying for them and for all

parents whose children are slipping away. I believe the basis is still there in them and I TRUST in

HIM to bring them back.

God gave me Life and Joy and much Happiness but I didn‟t realize it as much as I should have. Now I

smile and laugh and I really feel it. I don‟t have to put it on any more. I only have to think of Jesus

and the smile comes to my face. I see him smiling back at me because I love Him and I know He

loves me.

“Come to Me, all you who labour and are burdened and I will give you rest,

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart and you will

find rest for yourselves.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” My suggestion for the table discussion is to talk about the times you have trusted in Him; I mean really

Let Go and Let God and maybe the times you have not and could have. De Colores

INFORMATION FOR SPONSORS

As a sponsor you are responding in a very concrete way to Christ‟s call to spread His good news in our environments. It is a special blessing to be the instrument in providing someone with the opportunity to learn that through Christ we can be truly alive. We all know that our weekend was a very moving experience but perhaps we can also remember the apprehension we felt. Your candidate will often need a lot of encouragement and support to make what might seem like a sacrifice. Some information is enclosed for your candidate but there will probably be many more questions that you may be able to answer. Please be there for your candidate and be open and honest with your answers. Remember that you can give any information about the weekend but we ask that you not disclose the letters, Palanca chapel and closing. These were very powerful experiences for you and will hopefully be the same for your candidate. There are some things that you should discuss with your candidate. One is the matter of the cost of the weekend. It is not fair to leave the candidate with the uncertainty of the amount that he/she may be asked to pay. No one need feel embarrassed to talk about the cost. The major source of funds for the Movement is the financial contributions of everyone who attends the weekend – team and candidates. These funds

are necessary to cover the cost of the weekend. However, please let your candidate know that no one is turned away because they are unable to pay. If your candidate needs assistance covering the cost of the weekend, it is suggested you request assistance from your local Ultreya or the parish your candidate worships in. Cursillo is a Diocesan Movement and well supported by the Bishop, moreover the candidate

will return to the parish as leaven within the parish community. If you would like to make a contribution on behalf of your candidate, please tell him/her and put your contribution in an envelope when you bring your candidate to the weekend. You are also responsible for doing Palanca for your candidate. This should start before you even approach him/her about making a Cursillo weekend. It is so important to „talk to God about your candidate before talking to your candidate about God‟. Although writing a Palanca letter to your candidate is very important and necessary (this should be left at the registration desk specifically labeled „Candidate name and Palanca letter – Sponsor‟), please remember that more powerful Palanca is the offering of prayer, fasting and acts of self-sacrifice. In addition, as part of preparing your candidate, you may wish to invite him/her to join you at your Group Reunion or Ultreya as Pre-Cursillo preparation. As a sponsor, you are responsible for getting your candidate to/from the weekend; and are asked to remain at the facilities with your Candidate until they are settled in. If you are on team then let you candidate know ahead of time as you will be late in leaving and consider asking a friend to take your candidate home. It is the team‟s responsibility to clean up after the weekend. You are also responsible for journeying with your candidate in the weeks and months that follow. Please don‟t leave him/her without the necessary support of Group Reunion and Ultreya. Please also remember that the Cursillo is not a cure-all for personal problems. It is your duty as a sponsor to help to remove any major obstacles and to dispose the candidate for the total message of the weekend. All candidates must be Catholic and in a position to receive the sacraments or become so or are going through the RCIA process. Please keep this sheet for further information.

INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES

A Cursillo Weekend is the focus of a lay movement of Christian Renewal begun by Catholics in Spain in the 1940‟s. The word Cursillo is Spanish for “short course”. The Cursillo weekend gives us a short course in Christian living and is the beginning of a new and fuller awareness of what Christianity can mean in our daily lives at home, at work, with our neighbors, and with other members of our church. During these three days the Sacraments are stressed; therefore all candidates for a Catholic Cursillo must be Catholic and in a position to receive the sacraments or become so. The Church of today needs lay people who can be strong Christian witnesses, thereby bringing about change in our world. To be effective witnesses, we need to be formed and informed. We can‟t do this on our own but need the help and support of other Christians. The weekend program will consist of a number of talks given by both lay people and clergy. You will be at a table with 4 or 5 others and will have the opportunity to discuss the talks. There will be prayer times and times for reflection, time to socialize and time to discuss – a truly activity-packed weekend. Cursillo continues after the weekend by providing each of us with the opportunity to grow in faith and Christian commitment. For the weekend you will require casual, comfortable clothing, bath towel, toiletries and any needed medication. You are also required to bring a sleeping bag and pillow or bedding for a single bed, whichever you prefer. In order to respect each person‟s quiet time, we ask you not bring a radio or cell phone. Don‟t worry, if you forget anything or run out, there will be people there to look after your needs. The cost of providing the weekend could be approximately between $ 180.00 & 220.00 depending on the facilities we are able to reserve. It will include your accommodation, food, and all materials needed. It should be noted however, that no one would be refused because of money. Your sponsor can clarify any of these needs for you. The Cursillo weekend begins on Thursday evening at 7:30 PM and ends on Sunday sometime between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Your sponsor will make sure you are driven to and from the weekend. In order to provide everyone with the greatest of views and opinions during table discussions, attempts will be made to put people in groups with different ages, occupations, and life situations. Therefore, we ask for some personal information, which will be used for the administration of the weekend. All forms will then be destroyed.

If you have ANY questions, please contact your sponsor. REVISED – October 2009

CURSILLO MOVEMENT DIOCESE OF HAMILTON

INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL TEAM MEMBERS WANT TO BE ON TEAM???

The Secretariat is compiling a list of Cursillistas who are interested, qualified and available to be on team. There is no guarantee that by completing this questionnaire that you will be chosen to serve on a team, but your request will be given serious consideration. Team Selection Criteria:

It is preferable that you have been practicing the Cursillo method of Group Reunion and/or Ultreya, and attending School of Leaders and other events put on by Secretariat. It is very difficult to witness to and/or be an example of the method of the Cursillo movement if you are not “Walking the Talk”.

If you are involved in other church movements, please be prepared to set these aside during Cursillo weekends, so that the team and all candidates can fully experience the Cursillo movement as a whole.

As this is a Catholic movement, only practicing Roman Catholics are eligible for teams.

Team Selection Considerations:

A balance between those who have been on team and new Cursillistas is considered very important.

An attempt is made to see that the same people are not continually on team. New Cursillistas help provide new ideas and inject vitality into the movement.

Personal Considerations:

Anyone who is in crisis should give themselves time to deal with their struggles and time to heal before serving on team.

Team Commitments:

Be willing to attend all or most of the preparatory team meetings so no messages are missed and so that proper bonding of the team takes place before the weekend.

Must participate in the full 3 days, including Thursday night.

You are expected to help the new Cursillistas become integrated into the Cursillo community by encouraging them to go to Ultreya and by helping them to join and/or start a group reunion possibly with them if necessary for awhile.

A payment will be requested towards the expenses of the weekend. The amount will be confirmed by your Rector/Rectora.

Team meetings are crucial to building team community but, on a weekend, a team member’s role is one of self-sacrifice and service to the candidates. In a small way, you will follow the example of Jesus Christ when He washed the feet of His disciples. If you are interested in serving on an upcoming Cursillo team, then take a moment to fill out the information and forward to the weekend co-coordinator. Revised March 2010
