On Saturday the 10th of July, the IIA held a Vietnamese Cooking Class at

the Bunka Centre in Taira. Always popular, this year’s cooking class drew

26 people who enjoyed cooking, chatting and getting to know each other.

The dishes cooked were: Vietnamese Grilled Pork with Lemongrass and

Noodles (Bun Thit Nuong), Goya Soup (Canh Kho Qua Nhoi Thit),

Vietnamese salad, and a special banana dessert (Chuoi Nep Nuong).

The class was led by the talented Ms Nguyen Trang, who helped

participants finish exactly on time while still ensuring everyone was able

to properly cook delicious Vietnamese food. All recipes are up on the IIA

website for anyone who would like to try them at home!

The “Yukata Night” held on Saturday the 10th of July was a great success,

with over 100 people coming to enjoy a great party. Many people wore

either Jinbei or Yukata and enjoyed the nagashi somen, or chilled

Japanese noodles that flow down a bamboo slide for people to eat.

Because so many people wore such great outfits, everyone who came

“Obon? What’s this Obon I keep hearing about?” August is the height of Summer festivals in Iwaki, and the festival with the

most cultural significance is probably Obon. Obon is a Buddhist festival during which people pray for the peace of their

ancestor’s souls. During Obon food such as fruit and vegetables is offered to ancestors and houses are cleaned. In Iwaki it

occurs around the 15th of August. On the 13th people go to visit their ancestor’s graves, and light lanterns inside their houses.

On the 16th ancestors are guided back to their graves with those same lanterns. Bon Odori are

dances often held during Obon, to celebrate the memory of one’s ancestors. Toro Nagashi is a

common Obon custom of floating small lanterns down rivers or out to see to help guide the souls of

the departed home. Many people travel to their home town during Obon, so please take care when

travelling during the festival as roads and public transport can get very crowded!
