X T UP 2 SPEED AN SAE INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER FOR SPONSORS, FACULTY, PROFESSIONALS, AND STUDENTS VOLUME 2: ISSUE 17 FEBRUARY 2010 The SJSU Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists hosted their annual Science Extravaganza event. Sci- ence Extravaganza is a program used to introduce underprivileged and minority middle school students into the field of engineering. Throughout this one day event, approximately 450 participants worked with faculty, industry professionals, and student leaders on various workshop and projects. These projects were focused on engineering and included topics from mechanical engineering to chemical engineering. This was a great way to inspire and introduce the younger generation into engineering and science. A few of our SAE International student members volunteered and facilitated a workshop focused on vehicle design. They had students work in teams of 2-4, and had them design and build a car out of re- cycled materials. Once the cars were built, the teams explained their designs and competed against their classmates. After the competition, we were able to show them our 2009 FSAE and Baja cars as well as our 2010 models that were under construction. The Silicon Valley Engineering Council held it’s 20th annual banquet during National Engineers Week. The purpose of SVEC is to assist its member engi-neering and technical societies in the Silicon Val-ley to serve its members and community. A few of the events going on throughout the evening were an exhibit showcase, an encouraging welcoming, a fabulous dinner, and presentations by Dr. Emily Allen, Associate Dean for SJSU College of Engi-neering, Robert Doty, Director for the Peninsula Rail Program, and Timothy Cob, Project Manager for the California High-Speed Rail Caltrain Corridor. The SAE International Professional Mid-Cal section and BAE Systems sponsored a few of our student members as well as two UC Berkeley members to attend the banquet. It was a great opportunity for our student members to meet professional engi-neers representing all disciplines. With a few of our members graduating, they will be entering the job market as “fresh” engineers. So this was a perfect way for them to network and seek out their potential employers.

The San Francisco Region of the SCCA agreed to work with our Formula SAE team to create a fun and interesting fundraising event. After receiving continued support from our local SCCA chapter, we have familiarized ourselves with some of the regular autocrossers and better understand the way that their events are organized.

For an autocross to function, you need “workers” to keep things moving. Scoring, flagging, radio com-munications, traffic control, and chasing downed cones are just some of the tasks that are required for things to run smoothly. A regular SCCA auto-cross requires its competitors to take turns manning the various work stations so that everyone shares in the fun. But this time, competitors were given the option to donate to our team and relax! Our team members worked positions for the competitors who didn’t care to stand in the rain and watch cars go by, more importantly they wanted to support our cause. It was a great way for our team members to be exposed to the SCCA format of autocrossing and it was also a great way to network with local racers. It was an overall good learning and team building ex-perience and as always we had a great time sharing our passion for the FSAE competition.

Tesla Motors recently opened its doors to our student chapter with a facility tour on February 11th. Our group had a chance to see their Palo Alto dealership which housed their primary drivetrain assembly area as well as their primary testing facilities. We then had the opportunity to get nice and friendly with a brand new Tesla Roadster that was on the show room floor. Tesla Motors manufactures the world’s premier electric performance vehicle, the Roadster. They will also offer a luxury vehicle, the Model S, in the next year or so.

On Wednesday, February 17th, the Silicon Valley automotive industry lost three of its best. Doug Bourn, Brian Finn, and Andrew Ingram, all engineers with Tesla Motors, died when their plane crashed in East Palo Alto.

Our deepest condolences go out to their families and friends, and to Tesla in this difficult time.

February has hit the Formula-Hybrid@SJSU Team with a hurricane of activity and provided some ma-jor design changes as well as some manufacturing setbacks. The team has had a good introduction to the dirty details of racecar engineering and is now tasked with completing the vehicle by the end of April in order to attend competition. It won’t be easy.

Our Electronics Team led the way in February with crucial manufacturing steps. The battery box has been coming together and a new battery manage-ment system is nearly completed. Matt Kihlthau, who doubles as Electronics Technical Advisor and Chief Driveline Engineer, made the decision to move away from CVTs in favor of a single drivetrain system. Running different simulation software, we decided to go with a final drive ration of 4.36:1. This will be accomplished with a chain and sprocket

drive system. We believe this will give the car quicker response, save weight, ease packaging, and ease fabrication as we struggle to put a driv-eline together in these short weeks before competi-tion. CVTs proved unnecessary as we can accom-plish similar performance while staying on the lower end of the torque curve. The decision was finalized during testing when we found that the engagement rates we needed are virtually unattainable.

Our Chassis Team also had action in February and made huge strides with the steering and braking systems. Early on in the month we CNC’d our steel rotors and steering wheel with the help of Craig

Stauffer, Senior Technician for the College of Engineering and Ruben Delgadillo, FSAE Team Manager. Manufacturing of the seat and ergonomics began, and a plug was made in preparation for the final body work. The Impact Attenuator design was finalized and then tested. Now it’s only a matter of time before the final product is manufactured. Our designs, calculations, and testing methods for the impact attenuator must be submitted by March 1st to SAE International along with our official 2010 Design Report and Program Submission.

We now hold Formula Hybrid general meet-ings every Friday at noon that emphasize fabrication.

If you are interested in joining the team or would like more information please email Josh at: [email protected] or visit our website at: www.engr.sjsu.edu/sae/formulahybrid

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers SJSU student chapter hosted their very first “Proj-ect Day”. The purpose of this event was to show-case the different types of projects that students and student organizations do. It was a great way to meet our fellow engineering counterparts and inform them about activities and events that they might find interesting. A few organizations that participated were; American Society of Civil Engi-neers, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and our very own SAE International SJSU student chapter.

Not quite too long ago, I was of the opinion that no single event could truly change the outcome of my life. Surely, I thought, not too much could match the two years I spent becoming a Reconnaissance Marine. Not too much could match the two years I spent playing junior hockey. I thought I had been there and done that and that I knew all about life experiences. Then I found a project that truly would change my life forever.

In Spring of 2009 I decided to start Formula-Hybrid@SJSU. Not quite one year later, the lessons I have learned from managing the team have permanently changed my life as an aspiring engineer. My Team has grown to over 40 members, with 15 of those members being Senior Design Project members. I organized the project into subteams, assigned lead-ership, assigned tasks, and hoped it would work. Some pieces came together on their own and some didn’t. Sponsorships were lacking, and I found my-self learning business and marketing tactics to raise funds. Nobody on the team could weld, so I learned how to TIG weld so that we could manufacture our frame. Whenever a component or system was left un-designed, it fell on me to make it work. Not ev-erything worked out perfectly, but one step at a time the team moved forward.

Today I reflect on the story so far. There have been plenty of things I wish I could have re-done. There have been plenty of things that I wouldn’t change for the world. But for better or worse, it is safe to say that being involved with SAE International has given me enough life experience to last a dozen lifetimes.

I don’t write this article just to convey my SAE Inter-national war-stories to you. I write this article to try and give you a better appreciation for how valuable our organization is. If you are in industry, talk about us. If you are faculty, help us. If you are a student, join us. To all the students still reading this, I can promise you that no other organization can offer you nearly as much. It was nearly one year ago that I took my first step. Why not take yours?
