Goalkeeper The Penguins lost one of the best goalkeepers in school history with the graduation of Mariah Snyder, but still have an experienced keeper tending the net in junior Nicole Kline. Last season, Kline started seven times, col-lected 37 saves and owned a record of 2-4-1. Joining Kline at goalkeeper is freshman Ali Viola, who is a fi ve-time world champion in con-tinuous fi ghting. Kline helped Norwin High School to a state semifi nal appearance and was an all-district performer. “Nicole has improved dramatically,” Lemke said. “Our keepers have been training intensly and it will be a strong, open competition.”

As the Youngstown State soccer program embarks on its 15th season, second-year head coach Will Lemke hopes the combination of vet-eran leadership and a profusion of newcomers will help the Penguins reach new heights. The Penguins are coming off an exciting sea-son that marked a school record for most ties and most overtime games, and the fi rst all-league performer in three seasons. This year, Lemke will be charged with merg-ing his 10 returners and 12 newcomers into one cohesive unit. “Getting everyone into the mix and bringing them all together is an important goal for us,” Lemke said. “We want to develop a new team identity and create a new culture. “This team is very coachable, which is a posi-tive because many spots are open and there is going to be a lot of competition.” Lemke also feels his squad is deeper with better balance, roster composition, more athletic and faster. “We have players in positions that they are suited to play,” Lemke said. “I think we are more athletic and this team will be closer and a tight-knit group.” Forwards The Penguins’ front line of attack lost some of its scoring punch from last season, but also returns a pair of strikers that have more than two years of experience in senior Lau-ren Brennan and junior Geneva Strelka. Brennan, who played at defender much of last season, scored two goals and assisted on another a year ago. She also ranks third in school history with 14 career goals and her eight goals during the 2007 season is tied for third on the single-season list. Strelka tied for second on the team in goals scored and points with Brennan with two goals and an assists for fi ve points. During her freshman campaign, Strelka found paydirt three times and has fi ve career goals. “Our forwards are improving everyday,” Lemke said. “The players are really connecting and complementing one another. They are play-ing agressive and together.” Joining Brennan and Strelka up front are freshmen Taylor Gapczynski, Allison Ludwig and Rachel Morrison.

Midfi elders As in past seasons, the midfi eld will be the

deepest position on the fi eld with 10 players listed in that slot on the roster However, the Penguins have four voids to fi ll after losing Kate Bonn, Rochelle Boone, Natalie Brady and Jordan Gapczynski. Lemke is anticipating sophomore Cori Stark to anchor the center midfi eld with junior Kelly Storkel, sophomore Shelby Parks and newcom-ers Heather Coonfare, Shawny Ehlers, Brittany Hayes, Aliesha Sharpe and Kearsten Sego shor-ing up the outside. Stark, who played in just six games last sea-son due to a concussion, was named all-state as a senior and fi nished her career as Belle Vernon High School’s all-time leader with 124 goals and 53 assists. Storkel has already earned two letters with the Penguins and tallied an assist against Butler last year. Hayes, from La Crescent, Minn., sat out last season after transferring from Winona State and set her high school’s career record for most goals scored with 98. Parks, who notched one assist last season, appeared in 12 games and started once. Sharpe, who played at Mount Union in 2009, scored one goal in 19 games with the Purple Raiders. Gapczynski may also see time in the mid-fi eld as well.

Defenders Arguably the strongest area is in the de-fensive backfi eld with three starters returning from last season in junior Kelsey Kempton and sophomores Brittany Dowd and Katie Peter-lin. “I think our backfi eld is a very talented one,” Lemke said. “We added size, strength and speed, and are much more experienced and deeper.” Kempton, a two-year starter, was named to the 2008 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team and has started 37 straight matches for the Guins. Dowd, who appeared and started in nine games, missed half of the season due to a back injury. Peterlin started all 17 games last season and may split time at a midfi elder position. Newcomers Shawny Ehlers, Amanda John-son and Taylor Sebring are also expected to compete for playing time in the backfi eld.

Will Lemke became the fi fth head coach in the Youngstown State soccer program’s history in January 2009. Now in his second season, Lemke, who owns a career record of 88-65-10 in nine seasons, joined YSU after a successful tenure at NAIA Viterbo University where he won more than 80 games and was the winningest coach in the school’s history. Lemke posted an 84-55-7 mark in his eight seasons with the

V-Hawks. He led the program to two NAIA Regional Tournament appearances and was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 2006. Off the fi eld, Lemke’s charges annually posted one of the top team grade-point averages at the school. He will have nine stu-dent-athletes graduate this year alone from VU. He helped turn Viterbo into a perennial conference-title con-tender after the program had won just 24 games in the six years prior to his arrival. At Youngstown State, Lemke will face a similar task in turning a relatively new program -- 13 years -- into a con-tender in the highly-competitive Horizon League. Lemke took over the V-Hawks program in 2001 after spend-ing three seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Winona State (1998-01). After posting a 3-12-1 mark his fi rst season, Viterbo posted seven straight winning campaigns. His 12 wins in 2002 were a school best at the time. The school won MCC Championships in 2005 and 2006. The 2005 squad won a school-record 16 games and posted a .800 winning percentage. They fi nished 6-1-0 in the MCC that year and followed it the next season with a perfect 7-0-0 mark in 2006. The V-Hawks had the schools’ only two NAIA Regional Tourna-ment appearances in 2005 and 2006 as well. The 2005 bid came after winning the conference’s postseason tournament.Lemke’s teams won at least 11 games in all but two of his seasons at the helm of the V-Hawks. After the squad fi nished fourth in the MCC for three straight campaigns, the program fi nished in the top three in each of his fi nal four seasons. In 2008, the V-Hawks were 11-8-1 overall placing second in the conference at 6-2. During his time at Viterbo he served as the Athletic Depart-ment’s Event Management Coordinator. His duties included oversee-ing management support systems for all athletic events on campus as well as developing policies and management system procedures. Lemke was responsible for directing annual fundraising actives for soccer program that grossed more than the annual operating bud-get. While an assistant coach at Winona State, he worked with the head coach to help develop and maintain a Top 20 NCAA Divi-sion II program. Lemke was directly responsible for developing the goalkeepers who were voted all-conference each year. He helped with recruiting and worked as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. The Warriors won two conference championships and two tournament championships in a three-year span.

Lemke served as the district select director and coach of the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Pro-gram. He worked to create a new ODP district in Winona, Minn., and developed training programs. Lemke also served as a recruiter and trainer for 25 ODP District Select participants. Since 2004 Lemke worked as the technical director of the La Crescent Soccer Club in La Crescent, Minn. He created a training and certifi cation program for all club coaches and year round youth training programs. He also coached a Minnesota state champion-ship team and two runner-up teams. Lemke played basketball and soccer at the University of Wis-consin Rock County and soccer at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. While at UW-Rock County, Lemke was a two-time all-conference and all-regional performer as well as team captain. Lemke played for the LaCrosse United Premier Soccer Club from 1992-2001. In his free time Lemke is involved with Habitat for Humanity. He co-founded the UW-LaCrosse Collegiate Chapter for Habitat for Humanity and held the position of President for two years and vice president for a year. Lemke has stayed actively involved with the organization for more than 14 years. Lemke, an Edgerton, Wis., native, earned an Associate’s Degree from UW-Rock County in 1992. He furthered his education at the UW-LaCrosse where earned his bachelors in Education and History in 1996. Most recently Lemke completed his Masters of Educational Leadership from Winona State University in 2007. In soccer circles, Lemke holds a NSCAA Advanced National Di-ploma, a NSCAA National Diploma and a NSCAA Level II Goal-keeping Diploma. Will and his wife, Anna, reside in Austintown.
