description

If actions speak louder than words, then Planet Earth has been screaming since we printed our first skate deck back in 1990. Our nearly 20-year history in action sports comes with a deep respect for the welfare of our planet and the environments that support our passions. Don’t look to us for the tallest tees or brightest toxic hoodies. We're just building the stuff we're proud to wear, which also happens to be the deepest eco-sensitive product line in action sports. Oh...and we just turned 21! Legally bought our first beer, chugged it, and then recycled it. Cheers!

welcomEintro:

The trick is growing up without growing old.

Our 2010 winter clothing line continues the Planet Earth tradition of carrying itself with the same passion & confidence, yet understated attitude as the people we build it for. Now more than ever we’re committed to leading the way as the action sports industry’s only year round, top to bottom, eco-sensitive product line.

‘‘Each year all Montana snowboardersand skiers are treated to some pre-season man made snow and jibs,

compliments of a little place known as Great Divide just outside of Helena. They always throw a big open entry contest and then just let kids get their fix sessioning the line of jibs. The morning after the event we went back up for a few more hours on snow. After finding the contest line to be pretty blown out, we retreated to this patch of snow just at the base. There was something so unique about watching Tyrel and Phil session this dinky little box on a mini patch of snow in a sea of dry ground. It seemed an example of true dedication to one’spassions. Knowing the amazing terrain and snow these guys are privileged to ride each year, yetfinding them still stoked to session this. I feltobligated to do my best to document it wholly.’’- Jeff Hawe, photographer

PERSPECTIVESinfo:

Perspectives is a series of inspiring real-life stories told by athletes, artists, musicians, & visionaries that share our passion.

Whether it’s a photo that goes beyond the trick to reveal the entire landscape in an epic moment in time or a craftsman’s story of building unique art that changes the way we view our priorities, Planet Earth Perspectives is less about the close ups and more about how everyday life goes down. Most of us don’t view life through a fish-eye lens. So zoom out a bit and broaden your perspective. Whenever you see the Perspectives logo, look for the deeper story, interview or video that follows. What circumstances lead Scott Markewitz to shoot the shot to the right? Read up and find out...

‘‘We were on an MSP shoot in Haines in February (2008), which was the earliest I’ve ever been to AK. The days were short, but the sun was low in the sky so the light was incredible all day long. We were set up here shooting skiers on a heavily rimed south face that had great powder and really unique features. I was so mesmerized by this big face in front of us that I almost didn’t notice

the cool light and lines in the snow around Scott, who was standing about 200 yards away from me. That’s the beauty of Alaska, you can be set up to shoot the most incredible shot you’ve ever seen, and then you turn around to see another equally beautiful shot that you hadn’t noticed before. You have to keep your eyes open to all possibilities.” - Scott Markewitz, Photographer

100% of our cotton products are made from a blend of virgin and organic cotton. Our cottons can potentially be recycled making it a renewable resource without compromising performance. All Planet Earth cottons are grown & processed from IMO (Institute for Marketecology) Certified Fields and are SCP (Sustainable Cotton Project) compliant.

Look it up: www.SustainableCotton.orgwww.Imo.ch

Facts:Just because it grows naturally on a plant doesn’t mean it’s grown naturally. $2 billion USD worth of chemicals are sprayed on the world’s cotton crop every year, half of which is considered toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organization. These chemicals pollute the soil, air, animals, farmers and us all. With only 0.15% of the world’s cotton today guaranteed to be pesticide free, it’s up to companies and consumers to demand organic cotton. In our opinion it’s worth it.

Our 20 year history in action sports comes with a deep rooted respect for the welfare of our planet and its environments that support our passions. These personal values have shaped us into the progressive, one-of-a-kind apparel company that we are today. While there is still

100% of our polyester fabrics are made from a blend of virgin and recycled PET.We offer both 2 layer and 3 layer fabric of which our 3 layer is not only made of 100% recycled polyester but is also completely RECYCLABLE! The 3 layers bonded as one are made with a Dupont® Active Layer membrane for superior wind & water proof protection that literally keeps you dry for up to 8 hours in ice storms. Although there isn’t recycling bins for your 3 layer jacket today, it’s the first step in making the right change for tomorrow.

Facts:20 million tons of plastic bottles will be added to our landfills in the next 10 years. Polyethylene Terephthatlate, or “PET” for short is the stuff plastic drink bottles & food jars among other things are made of, yet only 30% are being recycled leaving the millions of tons a year dumped back into our environment.

Facts:Four to five TRILLION Polyethylene plastic bags are manufactured each year. It takes 1,000 years for them to break down during which time toxic substances leach into the soil and the food chain. Each year approximately 1 billion sea birds and mammals and 100,000 marine mammals dieeating them.

Facts:Formaldehyde is traditionally used in inks and dyes yet has recently been determined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer that it is acarcinogen (cancer-causing substance).

Facts:The DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating process on outerwear traditionally uses PFC chemicals to resist heat, water, oil & stains. Lab studies show that high concentrations can cause liver & organ damage and in 2006 the EPA even concluded it is a likely cause of cancer in humans.

‘‘Just a year ago this run at Big Sky was filled with jumps, rails, and a pretty good pipe. Due to budget cuts and who knows what other reasons the park was cut back to one small run leaving a mogul field instead. Maybe I was trying to make a statement here, or just having fun with a friend. Borrowing a little inspiration from

other photos like this, and talking my friend Kevin into risking his knees, we made lemonade out of lemons.” – Jeff Hawe, photographer

‘‘I was hanging out at a park ski test at Keystone watching in frustration as the clouds rolled in. They brought with them a fine mist of snow that blanketed the perfectly manicured park, effectively halting the testing process. This was the third day in a row that we were battling the weather and moral was down.

Regardless, Josh came flying through the park in the murky air. I begrudgingly lifted my camera and zoomed in. It turned out to be my favorite shot of the day, made possible by the same weather I was flipping off just moments before.” - Matt Harvey, photographer

PERSPECTIVES / INTERVIEW fall | winter . 2010

024

Over the past 20 years, Dave Seoane has gone from influential pro snowboarderduring the rise of the sport, to accomplished filmmaker and cinematographer, and now focused on his current passion of creating

snowboarding. So that day I went to atobogganing hill to ride instead. It was a fun challenge to stay on and maneuver but I fell so many times couldn’t walk next day. The next year I went to Iron Mountain ski resort that allowed snowboarding and got into it. I rode a bunch with Damian Sanders who I knew from skateboarding since we were from the same area.

How did you end up being apro snowboarder? My friend was moving to tahoe and I was at a community college so I left school and moved out there with him. At that time I just went there to snowboard because it was just super fun to do. I eventually lived at Donner Ski Ranch literally at the resort in a room upstairs. I remember riding 30 days straight and if I didn’t have to work in the evening, I’d ride at night too. Around 1989 there was an amateur California contest series that I won and it took off from there. By 1986 morepeople started making boards and there wasactually a shortage of people that actuallysnowboarded so it was easy to get hooked up.

How did you end up on the other side of the film camera?I was riding in some of Fall Line Films movies, “Western Front” and “Snowboarders In Exile”. The first time they did a trip to Chile I couldn’t go because all the spots were taken so they said I can go if I wanted to film so they just threw a film camera right into my hands. I was using a helmet cam a lot, it was easy because I was shooting all my friends I rode with every day and I have a big fat neck so I got a stable shot. I actually took photography in school so I always had and interest in shooting.

How did that evolve into producing films? To tell you the truth, just sitting on the chairlift got kind of boring after a while and filming was a new creative outlet for me to experiment with. The first snowboard movie production I did was “Road Kill” in 1993. I came up with the concept and directed and shot it and Fall Line Productions put up the money to produce it. I then branched off to make the Arnet movie “My Way”, “Subject Hakonsen” and eventually “The Shaun White Album”. Now I do film projects outside of snowboarding as well.

How did the Terje and Shaun White films come to be?I knew Terje well and got together with Richard Wolcott from volcom and just mapped it out, the

functional structures, spaces, and furniture that look like nothing ever seen before. Dave’s approach to design is modern, his values are old fashioned and his passion and creativity proves that both are more important than knowledge. We sat down with him this November after a day of snowboarding to get his perspective.

How did you get into snowboarding?I grew up in Calaveras County California. I remember being a tiny kid going into a skate shop and seeing these ice blades you could put on your skate trucks. I thought it made sense, it was a good invention I always wanted but never got. In 1983 when I was 15 I bought a Burton Backhill from my friend and went to Bear Valley in noarthern Cal. but they didn’t allow

3 of us. Terje and I traveled all over the world for a year. Shawn White album was an other Volcom proj-ect but it almost gave me an ulcer because he blew his knee out twice that year so we ended up going to New Zealand for 6 weeks to finish it. Jaime Heinrich saved the film with incredible editing.

It’s hard to imagine how you go from film making to furniture making?Traveling around you always see good design and it’s always a challenge to come up with good design that’s timeless. I’m not going to pay anyone to build an idea I have for something, when I can figure out how to build it myself. During that time I always had interest in building stuff with my hands, I just never thought I’d make a profession of it. I started making stuff for trade or sell it at super good prices to people I know. It’s not until the last couple of years that I did it more seriously. I’ll never stop filming its good work, and a great way to stay creative, and great to have a balance of the two.

my mom said, “WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?”. I said, “I’M DOING IT.”

How did you learn to be so crafty working with wood and metal? At one point I had a job out of high school with an older guy that was a stone carver. He taught me a lot and is now a well known sculpture down in Napa doing big bronze sculptures. I looked up to the fact that he created a job for himself. It’s always nice to work with metal but metal is really cold. I’m not an incredible wood craftsman but I can put wood and metal together to compliment each other, so two OK’s make one alright, haha.

What inspired you to make furniture?I don’t have a fine arts degree. I can’t make a sculpture with meaning, so it’s better to do creative stuff that is utilitarian. My first piece of furniture was actually this three legged chair called the Tripodious Maximous. I found a big radius pipe in a scrap yard while living in Truckee who’s curve looked like a perfect seat. So I took it home and it needed some legs. So I grabbed some steel snow stakes that were stuck in the ground and made them into legs, it was

real rough. I later found out that for some reason three legged chairs are an insult to furniture design. I had thought I hit the nail on the head with that one.

Your furniture is super unique, whatinfluences the look?I try to create clean simple designs that are timeless, that you can’t put into any time era. I had a friend that was a metal craftsman that could build anything out of steel, really clean, he was a big inspiration. So I try to make steel look super clean. If you don’t do it right, it looks like rusty old scrap art. There are also a lot of people that paint designs on wooden furniture and then clear coat it. I was thinking about how people fill in knots with epoxy, so then thought why not use color epoxy, then why not cut designs into the wood and fill them with epoxy and then sand it smooth after. I honestly feel like I’m barely scratching the surface though right now. Honestly I feel like furniture is still a hobby for me.

I REMEMBER RIDING 30 DAYS STRAIGHT AND IF I DIDN’T HAVE TO WORK IN

THE EVENING, I’D RIDE AT NIGHT TOO.

The wood looks amazing, what is it?I like working with Walnut because it’s a really unique looking hard wood. It costs me a little more time to work with it, but the final version is solid and will be around forever. I never use plywood veneer, the biggest thing is I’m not using wood from oversees or with chemicals, it comes from your backyard. I have a really good supplier locally in Portland, “Goby Walnut”. All of their lumber comes from the surrounding areas and is salvage or hazard wood making it Eco Friendly. They even run their delivery truck runs on bio-diesel, look them up online. A lot of the trees are even cut down from within the city limits because the trees get huge and overgrow sidewalks or become a hazard to houses or roads. The wood is

a huge vert skate ramp in my backyard and just skated every day all day. I knew I didn’t want to ever work for anybody, not that I wanted to be a bum, but it was just that making money wasn’t my priority. I didn’t grow up wealthy so it was easy to live slim. Right now I have more direction, a good solid game plan, it actually just hit me in the last four or five months. Before that I was just experimenting. In the next year I want to get to a point that I have some solid stock pieces that people can count on buying but still keep them hand produced.

Where can people check out your furniture?Currently I do made-to-order custom furniture and fixtures out of my shop in Portland Oregon. I did

just from old dead trees looking to be showcased for another term.

Being an entrepreneur you must have some philosophies on work.I think there are so many people that get jobs to pay their credit card bills, everyone needs to work but if you’re not doing what you really enjoy I feel bad for you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some stuck up rich kid, since I was a kid I’ve done plenty of shitty jobs, washing dishes, butchering chickens. It’s just important to realize that you don’t have to do the same thing for the rest of your life. If you focus 100%, you’re going to exceed.

What do you think of snowboarding these days?Lots of cloning, I always see it now with an outside perspective and get turned off, then I see pros and they blown me away and I’m impressed. Sometimes I forget how fun it is till your out riding deep snow with your buddies. Once you’re doing that, it’s a priceless experience and I remember again that it’s such a great sport. Back in the day when we weredoing it, every 3 weeks someone was doingsomething new to out do the other, the learning curve was so sky high. Now it’s so maxed out you have to do the impossible to stand out. What’s cool too is literally today were were riding at Mammoth and hooked up with friends. Some people were skiers and we were all having great time. Back in the day it was like racism between snowboarders and skiers.

What motivates you to continuallypush yourself?I know it’s always critical to be around solid creative humans. It lessons the drama and forces you to excel. If someone you know makes something so incredible I think about how in a closet competitive manner I can out do them or top that, not “oh man I missed the boat.” I think it’s critical to build goals and challenge your self. No one is going to come knocking on your door and hand things to you. I see artist kids make a couple of pieces and expect people to hand them money, but if you build consistency and you’re passionate about it, and don’t care about anything except what you’re working on, eventually people will find you. I’m all about letting your work speak for you.

What’s your future looking like?I don’t have my life planned out 20 yrs from now, even when younger. I remember when I was 18 and just graduated high school, my mom said, “what are you going to do?”. I said, “I’m doing it”. I had

a bunch of interior work at Nemo Design upstairs from me, they’re a graphics and marketing compa-ny that are a creative machine. I also did the inside of “Heart Coffee and Roasters” coffee shop. They just came out of no where and are already known as the best coffee in Portland. It is owned by by prosnowboarder Willie Yli-Luoma who’s a perfectionist. He had a bunch of design concepts and I worked with him to fine tune and build a bunch of features.

Selvage denim was the first denim produced in the US during the gold rush era. It’s produced using old-style shuttle looms that weave one continuous cross thread back and forth all of the way down the fabric to the exact width of the piece. This creates the “self-edge” or selvage down the natural edge of the fabric which is more durable because the edge cannot fray like standard denims that use separate horizontal threads & are cut to size. Check it out for yourself by turning up the cuff, and you’ll see the two selvage edges of denim as well as the natural color due to it being un-bleached making it even more environmentally friendly.

‘‘In Montana a good portion of the zones we ride are quite remote, especially in the winter months. Sometimes we even see wolves. This location is deep in a nameless drainage within Yellowstone National Park, where solitude and peace is plentiful. The snow piles high so snowshoes are the only option for getting in and out. The terrain available varies, but this day we had built a hip jump with

a steep run in. While Jeremiah was hiking back towards the top I snapped this photo, simply to illustrate how lonesome feeling it is in one of our favorite spots.” – Jeff Hawe, photographer

there are all these ramps. They are really well built, you can tell someone took their time. It must have been bmx guys because it’s on really rough ground, but you can manage around the cracks. The dock has holes and the building isn’t very stable looking which is why they’ve probably put a fence around it since then.’’ - Rich Odam, photographer

Michael Lish’s website says “We build skis for a working person’s wage.” That’s the tip of the iceberg. His ski factory is actually a small trailer built of recycled materials running on solar power off the grid. He pulls

What’s the facts on this place? It’s a wide open desert space, with a beautiful view of high altitude deserts. It’s a real vulnerableenvironment with high winds, and is over 100degrees in the summer. We’ve got 40 acres with water under us for the well and we’re totally off the grid, all our power comes from a small solar panel. I built the house highly efficient and we actually do have cell service. We live in a house I built entirely of recycled materials, plus there’s four 40’ long cargo containers converted into other buildings for storage and working on things. My wife has a whole fabrication metal art sculpture studio. I collect anything people are throwing out that could be used in the future to make something

the factory behind his truck to wherever he decides to setup shop that day. The factory, tools, process and reason behind it all is as unique and creative as the guy with the mohawk driving it. We met up with him in the California desert to get his perspective.

What’s up with living in the desert?I live on the fringe, it’s just in my nature, I just don’t run mainstream. I’ve lived my life driven by philosophy and designing things. Right now I live with my wife and daughter in Olancha, California. It’s between Los Angeles and Mammoth with a population of only 300. We were looking for property we could buy outright to raise our daughter.

else. The stuff is spread all over the property so it looks like a military transport plane crashed and spilled all over, haha.

What do you gain living this way?The way the brain works the more experiences a person has, the more connected that brain is. We thought about what we would like our child’s brain to connect with; nature, creativity and business. So we started thinking about all the environments our child would get the greatest amount of connectivity.Initially it was a family thing, me making skis in half the shop, my wife making sculptures and daughter doing home schooling. I’m just sodifferent, for better or worst, we could approachlife different and be effective and good at it.

Why did you build a portable ski factory? The whole thing started by education, we wanted our daughter to be educated in a community. Even with the small population here, we did have an amazing school & teacher, but then the town decided to close it. We fought to keep the school open but lost. So we’ve been home schooling. It’s worked out great but we needed to supplement her education with her being part of a community. I knew the community at Mammoth and thought, gosh if I could drive up my trailer to Mammoth with her and find a place to park it, hang out in the trailer and make enough money to feed us while she can hang out there to gain the community aspect. I figured I’d make 3 skis a week and that’s all we need.

We live in a house I built entirely of

recycled materials.

Why not just rent a space in Mammoth? We couldn’t afford the rent in Mammoth, I have no credit, I’m from the underground. I said to myself, I’m going to figure out how to do this thing in a trailer. You wouldn’t think you can make skis in a trailer, but thought, maybe I can, and maybe I can make the whole thing out of recycled stuff.

Why build skis in the first place?I’ve been making snowboards forever so figured I could learn how to make and sell skis. Once I learned

how and got good at it, I realized I could sell a lot of skis so we notched it up and ended up selling a lot of skis. We have an apprenticeship program too. People from all over the world can learn how to do this. It’s all been about education, for my daughter initially and now other people. You can come in for a 6 week, 60 hour/week intensive program and learn the process and go back home and setup your own portable factory.

What did you do prior to all this?Mid 80’s I had a karate studio, and one of mystudents owned Ski Tote and Shark Freestyle Watches. He went to Europe one time and came back with a bunch of monoskis telling me I’ve got to try this thing. I was like, what the hell is this??! I never saw a monoski before that. This was years before snowboarding was ever heard of. So me and my buddy skied them at Jackson falling all over, slamming & crashing on our hips, but loving it.

I started training crews to build them

and they startedcompanies like 51/50,

joyride, Arbor, and tons of other small

companies.

How did that lead to building skis?My mom was asking me one day, “what are you doing?” And I said I don’t know and she asked what do you think of this monoski thing. So we call this guy Bill Bhane who makes Bhane monos-kis and for $8,000 he said he’d teach us everything about how to make them. I spend like 3 mths with him. It was deep in presses, resins, it took time to explain everything. Then we come across this guy in Sun Valley, Idaho with a brand, Black Smoke Skis and is failing making monoskis. My mom goes there with me and starts chiseling him down to the lowest price to buy his whole factory. We bought the equipment, stuffed it in the biggest U-Haul you can get, and drove it home.

more. People come to us and say, “I want to try this, I want to design my skis”. So at the end of day if the skis work well and they had wonderful experience and the price is good, then hey, that’s good! Not everyone is interested but certainly enough people are saying that’s cool.

Where did the 333 name come from?I didn’t want to name it “custom” because custom sounds high priced. I read a book about keeping it simple, so originally I figured I’d ask the customer 3 questions, put in about 3 hrs of work and needed to sell them for around $300. So a guy said why not $333 and there’s the name. We build skis for a working person’s wage.

Why live off the grid? When you live on the grid, you have to be close enough to plug in. When I wake up and I look out, I’m in the forest or the desert, and I’m excited there is no plug there. When we’re hanging out parked by a river and people pull up, they say, “what is this thing?” They’re not going to drive up to an industrial factory at all. It’s pretty cool, we’re hanging out in some bitching real estate. A hill side, a beautiful countryside, wherever we park our trailer I’m always saying man, there’s no way anyone would setup a factory here. We drive this trailer to some really beautiful places. I was in a factory for years previously, florescent lights, dark places, I know the other option. So when I wake up and see the sun & nature it’s incredible.

Is this lifestyle for the challenge orbecause of a lack of money? There is the challenge but most importantly and of course we’re trying to not spend money. If I buy a door it just looks like a door. If I’ve got to make a door, then it naturally looks so cool. You end up thinking differently. My daughter finds a horseshoe and brings it home and I say, hey we can use that as a door knob. That wonderful experience of making a door knob, for a door that you also made of something else, and have it actually look cool is priceless. Now your mind is in a different frame, you’re not thinking about Obama, you’re thinking about a door knob.

Why is it all worth it?Why? I don’t know, I didn’t design human beings. I do know that it’s a cool day at the end of my day, it’s a bitchin day! We do live like this because it’s interesting and engaging and compelling. We’re all like wow this is a great experience. Whatever energy we expend people are stoked to give it

Seriously???!We brought it all back to Canoga Park, California. We didn’t know anything and unpacked it and slowly figured out how to make monoskis. So we start Yama Monoskis, named after my mom’s mother’s maiden name Yamaguchi and yama means mountain in Japanese.

Why build monoskis? We’re making monoskis because it was getting huge in France and Europe, it was like nothing else at the time. This was before snowboarding made any type of entrance. I can do shit on a monoski that people in this world still can’t do, I could drag my shoulder and ride it like you’ve never seen. It was just too in-tense though which made it great, but people didn’t want them and around that time snowboarding was picking up so I began building custom snowboards for people too.

What snowboards were you building?Lots of people wanted to make snowboards so I started training crews to build them and they started companies like 5150, Joyride, Arbor, and tons of other small companies. But as they emerged the big companies got bigger and some smaller companies died off, snowboarding just couldn’t sustain them. Eventually I had gone to China twice and helped setup factories there too, I actually had to cut my mohawk off because they thought the communist government wouldn’t let me in.

Why did you stop making snowboards?I just didn’t think I could compete in snowboarding anymore, prices were dropping and spending too much time outside family and inside of a factory was a problem. For so many years all I knew was making snowboards so I was thinking is there a way to make this work with the family. I thought maybe I could afford to buy some land in Olancha. We could move there, living in a trailer in the desert. I was able to afford to buy the land outright and eventually built the house. I gave the whole factory away to a guy named Chad who is still making Coda monoboards.

Holy backstory! Getting back to today, what drives people to buy your skis?People are interested in looking for alternatives, they’re just interested. At the end of day what drives people to us is design, people being able to sit down and design something they are going to own. When we as human beings design things its very compelling. In stores you know what you’re going to get, but to design things involves risk, education and a lot

back. It translates into orders and business but also translates into support. People step up and say we want to see you succeed, and someone comes up and says hey thanks man! And people thinking gosh I might want to do that. This whole thing is predicated on education and our love to help others learn from what we’ve learned. We’re living a pretty cool life. We’re livinga life that satisfies.

‘‘This was a last minute trip to Hanies Alaska with some friends. We heard the conditions were good and saw a four day high pressure coming so we just rallied to get there. We ended up staying in a single wide trailer next to the heli pad, last minute accommodations. It turned into the best 3 days of skiing in my life by far. No

avalanche danger, blue skys, perfect snow. All of my photos from that trip are shot looking down hill. I would take them from the top, before dropping in myself. It was just skiing with the group for the fun of it and documenting it from that perspective.” - Adam Clark, photographer
